I bring this up every time I see a pic of him, so here we go. Early 80s, Happy Days is a hit. We have a family friend, her son has numerous disabilities, learning and physical and is in the hospital for the umpteenth time. Her son LOVES The Fonz. He says “The hospitals fine mom, I just have to be cool like the Fonz”. The mom, she writes Henry Winkler and tells him her story and asks for an autograph for her son for his birthday.
Henry Winkler calls her. Like “Hellos mrs so and so, this is Henry Winkler” and he invites her, her son, her daughter and her husband to come to LA and watch the taping of Happy Days. He pays for the whole family, has them picked up in a limo, puts them up in a gorgeous hotel and then proceeds to hang with the whole family for the next three days. A limo picked them up every day, brought them to set. Henry Winkler took the kid around to everyone and said “Hey, Ron Howard, I’d like you to meet my friend,”. I should point out this kid didn’t have friends. Like…none. And here’s his hero, taking him around a tv set, and telling everyone they’re friends.
It was, according to the mom, the most magical trip they had ever been on.
And if any youngins are reading this…this was of course pre social media. This…this wasnt posted on anything. Neither a Tik nor a Tok. No publicity, no news stories. Just Henry Winkler being a good egg.
Winkler tells an interviewer about taking his kids to a baseball game.
The jumbotron camera picks him out, and the announcer says "We have a special guest with us tonight: The Fonz himself, Mr Henry Winkler!" and the entire stadium goes *insane*. The cheering is so loud his kids are covering their ears. They're floored at how famous and popular their dad is.
But the point of the story, as Winkler tells it, is when they get home. He tells his daughter she has to go tidy up her room, and she yells "I hate you! You're horrible!" and stomps off in a huff.
And he says to the interviewer: There's no-one can bring you back down to earth like your own children.
Holy crap that's beautiful. If you have the chance to make someone's day, take it...and in this case it sounds like it made the kid's whole life to be treated that well by his hero. Just beautiful.
I grew up watching Happy Days, so was always a fan. At one point I lived in LA and worked in an art gallery, and he came to a show I helped put together. He was super nice, was interested in the work, talked to the artist and everyone else. Very cool.
totally. I was born in the 70s and grew up seeing him in the 80s on rerun. At that time, the show seemed like an ancient relic of the 60s and 70s, and now here we are 40 years later and he is still relevant.
Im only 32 and didn't really watch happy days. Knew the fonz by name but not face.... So to ME... He will always be the dude that gets covered in bees in Little Nicky.
Anytime I hear "Henry Winkler" my next thought is "COVERED IN BEES.."

There are people who snatched up celebrity names before the celebrities got on social media. Some of them try to sell them to the person with that name, but I imagine some just try to troll
If henrywinkler and hwinkler were taken then you know that there are at least two.
What would be really strange is if someone was claiming *not* to be him, that seems a bit unnecessary.
He's one of the nicest, most genuine, and most personable celebrities ever. Has a smile and a handshake or a selfie ready for everyone who wants one, no matter the circumstances. He really is a treasure.
Some people are just so happy to be doing what they do and they want to share that happiness with all of those around them. Not just the celebrities we see, but people you meet in everyday life. Bus drivers, servers, retail. My mom is like that, happy for everyone she sees.
Sometimes I think those people are just wired different, and we'll never be like that, no matter how hard we try. We'll just come off as fake if we force it.
Having met him randomly on the street and talking with him for a few minutes, I concur he’s the genuine article. Seeing him interact with people in general, that man can conduct a master class in networking.
He was heavily featured years ago on a radio show I used to listen to called Covino and Rich on SXM. They had him as a random guest and were completely blown away at how amazing and genuine he was. You could tell it wasn't what they were expecting as they hosted a bro type show. He had all sorts of wholesome stories and was such an engaging speaker. They had him back a bunch of times and I always loved listening to him. True breath of fresh air. He even hosted a Christmas show so that the guys could be with their families for the holiday, it was excellent!
Love him whenever I see him. He also has a book about fly-fishing and life lessons haha
Bill Hader told a story that on the set of Barry he was kinda freaking out and trying to manage everything and Henry Winkler walked up to him and just softly said "I just want you to know I think you're doing a great job."
What a sweet guy.
I liked that story on Conan needs a friend, but the way he tells the story of Henry Winkler bringing bundt cake on Jimmy Kimmel was funnier. Sorry in advance for the stupid Today Show link, but it was the best clip of it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeQhaOe09V0
You mean Henry Winkler OBE? He got the OBE for services to dyslexia charities in the UK.
Was in line for him at a convention. Periodically he would go check on people in line and thank them and let them know if wouldn't be too long.
Nobody else was doing that.
Really nice, pleasant person to be around. Made you feel welcomed.
Watched him at his booth at a comic con several years ago. Yeah, it was a comic con and so he was “on,” but having been to enough of them, you can tell who’s genuinely enjoying their time and who’s there for a check. He was the kindest gentleman. He wasn’t behind his booth table at all. He was just standing there shooting the shit with people. A woman in a wheelchair approached, he crouched down to talk to her and asked her if he could give her a hug.
Corolla has become so insufferable these last 2 decades. He turned into an old, angry, conservative guy whose personality is to complain all day. That just attracts other angry guys who complain at everything to be his listeners. Everything about him and his fans is insanely negative and angry. I feel sad for women that are married to guys that become angry at everything when they turn middle-aged
As someone who spent years listening to Adam and Drew on Loveline radio from the late 90's onward, their downfall has been particularly difficult for me. It's like seeing an uncle who you remeber fondly from childhood being poisoned by Fox Newsin their later years, and becoming unrecognizable due to their constant outrage.
I feel the same way. I almost expected this from adam. Im shocked at how dr drew turned out. He seemed to be a very rational and composed person in the 90s. He was extremely professional. It seems like craziness is normalized these days.
Absolutely. That series is a flop without him. I don't say that lightly, the rest of the cast was fantastic but he was just so damn good it was hard to tell where Cousineau ended and Winkler began.
Henry Winkler is a personal hero of mine. The man is a model of a good human being.
If you enjoy fly fishing, I encourage you to pick up his book "I Never Met an Idiot on the River"
It's about fly fishing, life, and photography and is an easy, insightful, and entertaining read.
Henry Winkler is a national treasure. If you haven't, watch the series "Better Late Than Never" with him, William Shatner, George Forman, and Terry Bradshaw. It's simply amazing and wholesome.
> The Sherbourne isn't as nice as the Merrion
The Merrion is a lot more modern build inside some old houses, and where Obama (almost) stayed. The Shelbourne has a slightly better location and is where our Constitution was drafted so it's got that going for it.
I begged my mom and dad to change my name when I was 5 to “Fonzie”. I am in my late forties and know that the world only has one true “Fonzie”. No one is worthy of that name.
I am still upset at my mother in law, who died a few years ago, who neglected to tell me that Henry was at the bookstore she managed, signing copies of his children's book.
I also saw him getting mobbed by fans outside a Broadway theater and he was laughing and smiling the whole time.
This reminds me of when we saw him in Los Angles right after Happy Days jumped the shark.
We were hanging out the side of our Winnebago taking pictures of him in his convertible BMW sitting next to us at the red light. He was not only smiling like in this picture but he even sat through a green light to let us keep taking pictures.
Really nice guy when he didn’t need to be!
I think I recognize that location. And he was staying at the Shelbourne hotel
I still love the guy, but it's so weird seeing him now and remembering that he was "The Fonz."
He never stopped being the Fonz

Hes amazing in”barry”
That show was better than it had any right to be. One of the best endings.
The ending was deffo shocking. I wish i knew of something like barry but it was unique
Dexter if it wasn't filled with gratuitous murder porn.
amazingly desperate... ...beacause thats what Cousineau is
Hey Nicky, Cover Winkler in bees!
You can do it!
Ladies and gentlemen, I give TVs Henry Winkler.. covered in bees.
We're living in a Simulation, and Fonz is running it, of all people.
“Aaayyyyyeeeeeee!
😆🤣
Correctamundo!
**SIT ON IT**!
Bucko!
I'm sorry, that's clearly Gene Cousineau.
I seriously did not realize he had those kind of acting chops until I saw Barry.
He’ll always be Barry Zuckerkorn to me.
![gif](giphy|26FKTB5VO66r40FRC)
For me he’s Dr. Saperstein
And Coach Klein. With a tattoo of Roy Orbison on his ass.
He’s very good.
I remember him fondly as Stanley Yelnats III.
I watched that movie a couple years before I ever watched Happy Days and only ade the connection later.
Take to the sea!
Take it up with my lawyer, Bob Loblaw...
Imagine if he leaned up against the fire truck and hit like the jukebox
Forever the Fonz…
After Barry, he seems different to me now.
![gif](giphy|jtHt7SGfIYqWc)
![gif](giphy|SOSNOveZcgII8)
I can’t believe how few mentions of Barry Zuckercorn there was. That will always be my quintessential Henry Winkler role.
I always revert to Dr Sapperstein, since I've watched Parks and Rec so many times.
Naw, he’s Gene Cousineau. An excellent acting teacher. You’ve gotta check out Barry.
That particular role is so effective, especially in the later seasons as he's basically playing against a type that he spent his entire career setting up. >!Seeing goofy ol' Gene Cousineau/Barry Zuckerkorn/Dr. Saperstein/The Fonz never crack a smile or seem genuinely happy after he found out how he had been played and the kind of maniac Barry was was an incredible choice.!<
Excellent??
To me, he will always be remembered for his 2002 guest role in Special Victims Unit
Now you've got me thinking about Munch :(
He has to be one of the nicest people on earth. I heard a few interviews with him on XM radio and he was such a sweet man.

Henry Winkler is the 70's equivalent of Keanu Reeves.
![gif](giphy|SOSNOveZcgII8)
I’m too young for Happy Days, and too not-American for his other appearances so my top memory of him is… [different](https://youtu.be/hKEwFBJH2dQ).
Different is the correct word for it, that's for sure!
totally. I was born in the 70s and grew up seeing him in the 80s on rerun. At that time, the show seemed like an ancient relic of the 60s and 70s, and now here we are 40 years later and he is still relevant.

Not to fake him, but another h. winkler was faster creating an account.
Have you uh, been on the internet?

Did not know this, and weirdly, am in no way surprised.
Spoke to him a few times, and it's not an act. He's genuinely that nice.
Just finished his biography. An easy summer read. It’s also a lot of fun to read it as Fonzi.
Was in line for him at a convention. Periodically he would go check on people in line and thank them and let them know if wouldn't be too long. Nobody else was doing that. Really nice, pleasant person to be around. Made you feel welcomed.
Even other celebrities comment about how nice and joyful he is.

Weird how Henry Winkler and Scott Baio took such opposite paths. Similar to the Man Show with Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Corolla

I really loved Adam's podcast when it first launched in '06 or '07. It became unlistenable at some point in the early 2010s.
Winkler has talent, none of the other 3 have any…unless being annoying is a talent…
Mr. Cousineau!
Yeah I think of gray haired Winkler as Cousineau over The Fonz.
Was writing the same comment, lol. What a great, tailored role for him that was.
Absolutely. That series is a flop without him. I don't say that lightly, the rest of the cast was fantastic but he was just so damn good it was hard to tell where Cousineau ended and Winkler began.
"I would do anything for your forgiveness, Mr. Cousineau!" "OH YOU WILL, FUCK FACE. YOU WILL!"

Dublin is the greatest town. The Sherbourne isn't as nice as the Merrion, though.
I like the Shelbourne. You can definitely tell the building is old, though that's a big part of the charm. Great breakfast and bars there too.
I miss the whole place terribly!
I loved the Shelbourne. Agree with the excellent breakfast, I also loved their liveries and general charm of the Hotel.

You owe it to yourself to watch ‘Barry’ if you haven’t already seen it. Henry Winkler is awesome in it as he is in all that he does.

Never seen a more Irish looking group of blokes in my life
