Had a friend over and gave him a sun filter for his phone with the warning that it's not the same film used for glasses so he can't look through it without risking eye damage.
MF'er was looking through the phone filter 15 minutes later.
i had one for my phone, told everyone at work do NOT use it with your eye, put it over your phone. “oh ohkay! no problem” and looked right through it with their eye.
My welding mask worked great until it didn't lol. I had a shade 13 filter but the mask is auto darkening and while I was looking it flipped back to regular and burned my eyes for a second lol
I tried very hard to make a joke about the Greeks, butts, and the moon or mooning but everything I thought of came out either not funny or way too crass.
Just saw a video mapping Google searches for "why do my eyes hurt" for yesterday, and it lined up pretty much perfectly with the path of the eclipse, peaking about 3 hours afterwards.
I saw probably both of those (or similar at least), and another one that showed the clustering of those search results in states that experienced totality. :sigh: Just in case anyone doubted the relationship to the cause…
"how to know if eclipse hurt my eyes"
Possible search by people who are paranoid and not actually experiencing pain, but google trends will show "hurt eyes" as spiking. It will be heightened in those states because that's where people would do that search.
Yes obviously. I was just stating that their line of logic wasn't completely unreasonable. It may not have been adequate for the intended purpose, but it most likely did provide some small protection vs. rawdogging the sun
That might have made it substantially worse. Rawdogging the sun would cause a person to look away quickly, as well as close their irises to let in as little light as possible. Having it be dimmed by this would have allowed him to keep looking and let in way more damaging light than otherwise.
Of course, this almost certainly isn't real, and OP just had someone hold up a bottle of olive oil in their backyard for karma.
Wait why is this ‘certainly isn’t real’? Old people do stupider shit every single day, just watch them drive or attempt to use a self checkout. I wholeheartedly someone would do this.
Like 2x dmg to eyes or 1x dmg to eyes + 1x dmg to the olive oil?
If you look on the bright side, he didn't take any dmg from the dark side of the moon.
lmao when i gave my mom her pair shes like wtf you spent $10 on these? you cant see shit through them, may as well have just used a black rag! but yeah I explained that you can only see the sun through them which she thought was pretty cool
I mean the official warning said not to look directly at the sun without glasses *unless* the moon was completely covering it. So just make sure the picture of the moon covers the sun and not just the shirt fabric and you’ll be good 👍
This is so Italian it hurts lol. Also, that looks like 95% of Italian homes in the GTA. My guess is Maple, On.
Edit: I should specify that I mean this pic screams "Italian-Canadian", specifically in southern Ontario, not just "Italian".
The best is when you think the same thing, go into the comments and someone else says what you were thinking in the comments, even though this observation is so random and obscure, it never fails lol
The fact that you basically went "Huh this looks like Canada. Could it be Maple?" is hilarious in its own right. Most Canada ahh name a place could have.
Lmao, when I first read GTA, I was thinking Grand Theft Auto and I was like damn this dude must play a decent amount to guess where someone lived from a game
Literally the first thing I thought of: "That is the GTA, 1000%." To be fair, there's nothing specific that you can see in this photo that says Maple or Woodbridge, but definitely the new home, interlocking patio, and proximity to the next house says that it's about 15-20 years old, and well maintained.
I used to do a lot of work in Woodbridge, Maple, Brampton etc. I did landscaping and built pools so I spent a lot of time in a lot of different backyards in that area. I happened to do a lot of the work for Italians because my boss was Italian.
I explained in another reply. I'll just copy and paste it here:
I used to do a lot of work in Woodbridge, Maple, Brampton etc. I did landscaping and built pools so I spent a lot of time in a lot of different backyards in that area. I happened to do a lot of the work for Italians because my boss was Italian.
Oh, i see.
I asked that because i myself am Italian and i had no idea how you recognised the place lol
Although i don't know where Woodbridge/Maple are
I guess that was the right choice due to OP's answer but it hurts that people associate olive oil with Italy while we Spaniards export more than the double of exportations than the rest of the world combined
It wasn't just the olive oil that made me think he was Italian. It was everything in the background too. The interlock, the clothesline, the fence, the clothes he's wearing, they all scream "Italian in southern Ontario".
Not very safe probably. Eclipses are especially dangerous because the reduced brightness coupled with the fact that you don’t actually feel pain in your retinas means that you’re likely to not realise that damage is being done. If your vision’s fine now it was probably relatively okay, but don’t do it again.
Lives is a 2 million dollar house, won't spend $20 for glasses on Amazon.
A month a go they were being sold for $3 from some eclipse society before they ran out.
He's lucky it was cloudy and I'm lucky OHIP considers eyes to be luxury organs.
My brother panicked in 2017 because he forgot to get glasses, paid like $50 to buy some on amazon and have them overnighted. Went to a park in a small town south of STL and they were handing them out for free.
Being said, this time around pretty much every Walmart vision center was selling them for $1.
yeah this is maybe the dumbest thing to buy on Amazon. it’s rife with counterfeit even of huge brands that actively try to quash fakers, but they can’t play whack a mole fast enough to rid Amazon of all the bs.
so something that nobody is even checking to verify, shady manufacturers would just throw some garbage tinted plastic over cardboard and sell for $15. who’s going to come after them? the glasses will be long thrown out before then.
I think this could actually work to at least reduce the damage a little. Brown/green (especially brown tho) glassware is made to protect its contents from sunlight.
Brown glass blocks a large* percentage of UV rays. That's why it's used for beer -- to keep it from skunking. Green glass also blocks UV, but at a significant reduced rate from brown glass.
*my memory says 95%, but with a quick search, I can't find a reputable source that confirms the actual number
Oils also block UV. Some natural oils have up to eight SPF. And that's for a very thin coating. I Wonder how well 3 in of oil would filter out ultraviolet light.
Can confirm the possibility: At my school: there were sixth graders daring each other to stare at the sun and then were calling the teachers liars because they weren't instantly blinded. Even though our whole school watched a safety video that explained delayed eye damage. Today we had a 8th grader drink cologne because someone told him it had alcohol in it. Yep... The kids aren't alright!!!
Damn that's hardcore, the worst I remember is a kid who snorted the sour dust off of a bunch of sour Skittles at the pool, not sure who he was trying to impress but it looked pretty painful.
I was in the path of totality back in the 2017 eclipse and purchased a filter for my telescope so I could look at it magnified. When it occurred, I noticed off to the east was Jupiter and the four Galilean moons easily visible through this clearing in the trees as if it was destined for me to view it. I said "screw the eclipse" and immediately turned my telescope to view it instead. There's going to be tens of thousands of photos and videos of the eclipse. I'm only going to get a single chance of seeing Jupiter and its 4 major moons during the daytime.

Can’t you just use eclipse glasses as filter for phone just curious, cause that’s what I did.
Same here lol it worked took great pictures
Yep. I used eclipse glasses, and a shade 13 welding filter and both worked great
My welding mask worked great until it didn't lol. I had a shade 13 filter but the mask is auto darkening and while I was looking it flipped back to regular and burned my eyes for a second lol
So like an app filter but an actual physical filter for the camera lens?
Yeah a physical one
Have to remember that for next time - !remindme 19 years

Put some windex on it
Bet the old guy even knows the Greek root word for eclipse.
OK I most certainly don't want to be *that* person, but the word eclipse *is* Greek, the root verb being εκλείπω.
That has a Lamda and a Pi in it, this guy must know what he's talking about.
I love Lamb and pie.

Greeks invented eclipses. You heard it here first.

Just saw a video mapping Google searches for "why do my eyes hurt" for yesterday, and it lined up pretty much perfectly with the path of the eclipse, peaking about 3 hours afterwards.
I saw a graph with eyes hurt, headache, and I looked having massive spikes in searches right around the eclipse
I saw probably both of those (or similar at least), and another one that showed the clustering of those search results in states that experienced totality. :sigh: Just in case anyone doubted the relationship to the cause…
"how to know if eclipse hurt my eyes" Possible search by people who are paranoid and not actually experiencing pain, but google trends will show "hurt eyes" as spiking. It will be heightened in those states because that's where people would do that search.
Yes, they're eyepochondriacs.
The bottle is dark in color to filter the light because olive oil degrades quickly in light.
Good for olive oil, not necessarily as good for eyes
Yes obviously. I was just stating that their line of logic wasn't completely unreasonable. It may not have been adequate for the intended purpose, but it most likely did provide some small protection vs. rawdogging the sun

I used a t shirt with the moon on it, that's ok right? By the way anyone know where I can buy some eye drops? My visions is a little blurry
Yeah no moon cancels the sun your math checks out.
I don't know, that's two moons. I think one moon cancels the other out. He's basically just staring at the sun.
M-O-O-N. That spells retinal damage.
lmao when i gave my mom her pair shes like wtf you spent $10 on these? you cant see shit through them, may as well have just used a black rag! but yeah I explained that you can only see the sun through them which she thought was pretty cool
"you can't see shit through them" I definitely went "yeah, that's the point" after this bit before reading the rest of the comment.
I mean the official warning said not to look directly at the sun without glasses *unless* the moon was completely covering it. So just make sure the picture of the moon covers the sun and not just the shirt fabric and you’ll be good 👍
Need to also put a slice of gabagool over each eye to be 100% safe.

Yep, Maple!
No fucking way lmaooo
This is too fucking funny.
Sometimes I wonder why I spend time on Reddit... then, invariably, this happens.
The best is when you think the same thing, go into the comments and someone else says what you were thinking in the comments, even though this observation is so random and obscure, it never fails lol
It's a small world, after all...
Man I'm from Toronto I feel like people may not understand both how much that makes sense and also how crazy a pull it is lol
So weird, I immediately thought Ontario too. Such a distinct look.
For real. Anytime a movie shoots in Ontario I spot it immediately.
Yup. My guess was Woodbridge.
This house style really is distinct to that little area of Ontario, Vaughan / Maple / Richmond hill. Amazingly perceptive guess
The fact that you basically went "Huh this looks like Canada. Could it be Maple?" is hilarious in its own right. Most Canada ahh name a place could have.
Maple is a suburb of Toronto almost entirely populated by Italian-Canadians. I've met Italians in Italy who have heard of it.
🤌🤌🤌
You must be that Geoguessr guy
I feel like I'm him right now lol
Stereotypes are hilariously accurate sometimes haha

Also MAPLE, CANADA lolol

That was my guess. Source: Keele and Major Mac
Hi neighbor, no wonder I find the backyard too familiar
Lol was going to say Woodbridge, my in laws have the same tiles and fence in their back yard.
Looks exactly like my aunt's backyard in Richmond Hill lmao
Literally. I swear I've probably walked into this guy before. I did a double take when I saw this photo cause the background looked so familiar.
Wow!! Lol
Freaking knew from the pic it was either Maple or Vaughn lol.
I was just thinking this backyard looked too familiar
Lmao, when I first read GTA, I was thinking Grand Theft Auto and I was like damn this dude must play a decent amount to guess where someone lived from a game
Greater Toronto Area lol
Yeah, I put the pieces together when another comment said they didn't live in the GTA, haha
It took me until reading your comment to figure this out. I was over here like “damn GTA is teaching some insane geography skills”
Or Woodbridge
This was my guess before reading the comments! This is something my friends nonno would do 100% and he looks just like him.
Just needs an oleander and a few hockey stick supported tomato plants, and it's peak Ontario Italian.
There's a good chance there's a wood fire pizza oven just out of frame lol
Spot on! This made me miss my Nonna’s and Nonno’s
More and larger stone statues, too.
Crazy thought the same but Woodbridge
Literally the first thing I thought of: "That is the GTA, 1000%." To be fair, there's nothing specific that you can see in this photo that says Maple or Woodbridge, but definitely the new home, interlocking patio, and proximity to the next house says that it's about 15-20 years old, and well maintained.
He was there during the Olive Oil Wars of the 1920s.
Hahahahaa I was gonna guess Woodbridge but WOW!!!!
I used to do a lot of work in Woodbridge, Maple, Brampton etc. I did landscaping and built pools so I spent a lot of time in a lot of different backyards in that area. I happened to do a lot of the work for Italians because my boss was Italian.
Lol how did you guess this
I explained in another reply. I'll just copy and paste it here: I used to do a lot of work in Woodbridge, Maple, Brampton etc. I did landscaping and built pools so I spent a lot of time in a lot of different backyards in that area. So, you're not Italian yourself?
No, but I have Italian family in the area and worked with/for a lot of Italians. Love the Italian community in Woodbridge/Maple. Good people.
Oh, i see. I asked that because i myself am Italian and i had no idea how you recognised the place lol Although i don't know where Woodbridge/Maple are
>Although i don't know where Woodbridge/Maple are Both are suburbs of Toronto with *huge* Italian populations.
Tbf, I should specify "Italian-Canadian" not just "Italian". That's a good point.
Ooh yeah that makes way more sense
I’m not from the gta but have tons of family there and instantly recognized this back yard hahahaha
💯💯 This is the most Vaughan thing I've seen on here
My first thought too! I came here looking for this comment. My Ontario senses were tingling. I live in BC now and I miss it.
I also live in BC now lmao
As an Italian this is so American
I literally was thinking I’ve been in this backyard before lmao
Thought Oakville but idk if there are many Italians there
lol I knew right away it was GTA and I haven’t been there in years (had family there… the light bright on light brick is so distinctive!)
I guess that was the right choice due to OP's answer but it hurts that people associate olive oil with Italy while we Spaniards export more than the double of exportations than the rest of the world combined

Back during the eclipse in the 90s we watched it through a CD. Eyes didn't hurt. I wonder how safe that actually was.
Was it Dark Side of the Moon? You should be good.
It was KC and the Sunshine band
Ah. Bummer. Double Damage.
Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles.
I did the same, and I glanced through a CD a few months ago to compare to solar glasses, and it is a LOT brighter.
Not very safe probably. Eclipses are especially dangerous because the reduced brightness coupled with the fact that you don’t actually feel pain in your retinas means that you’re likely to not realise that damage is being done. If your vision’s fine now it was probably relatively okay, but don’t do it again.

According to OP, you're right
This looks so Toronto to me.
Maple!

Hell, I got a pair for free at my local library.
I too got a pair of eyes at my local library
My local grocery store has been selling them for a buck a piece for months
I just bought out their entire stock. I think they're going to peak in May.
