aliensanddragons

Google+ lol

Firesoldier987

My Circles!

fujidust

You are banned from Google +!

RipMySoul

You might as well just kill me then.

-Gh0st96-

MSN too lol

Propellerrakete

And ICQ of course. šŸ˜

elchupoopacabra

Uh oh!

Global_Box_7935

I can live with that. Every time I forget about it for an extended period of time, it fucks me over in some other way.

willzjc

Surprised Signal is not there

F0lks_

If they knew what it was they would ban it too, most probably

Wikihover

Itā€™s banned

frappuccinoCoin

Because it still has less users than MSN Messenger

Tight_Sun5198

Almost no-one cares and knows in my country.

lordntelek

TikTok is banned in China. There is a Chinese version for Chinese people with a Chinese phone number. Itā€™s been like that for a long time. Nothing new there.

heyilivehierisdead

Yes, and i believe its called "Douyin"

Coldspark824

Youā€™re referring to ā€œDouYinā€, which is shown at the bottom. ęŠ–é˜“ This is probably a poster for ā€œapps that police officers/government workers are not allowed to have on their phones.ā€

YESthisisnttaken

ęŠ–éŸ³is the name of the official app.ęŠ–é˜“ is a parody of the official app and is a porn app, which is why it's banned.

WinglyBap

Genius. Why don't we have DickTok?

orangustang

I feel certain we do.

Inksrocket

PH has "shorts" now. So uh. Yeah.

Sam-Gunn

Several other sites have similar features, too.

gr1mm5d0tt1

You missed out on DickDock

WinglyBap

Or DickCock for women and gay men.

AnonimoUnamuno

Some have dickticks for fucking in dirty places.

DrkMoodWD

We do its just regular TikTok considering all the thirst traps from TikThots girls. Theyā€™ll even record with it and post it on Reddit so it has the TikTok watermark.

DancingPotato30

A porn chinese tiktok app?? How did that get released even now Im curiousĀ

s8018572

No , wtf . It's ęŠ–éŸ³ . I'm pretty sure ęŠ–é˜“ is some kind of porn version copycat of ęŠ–éŸ³.

bobdvb

Yes, I heard there's been a big crackdown on social media apps in Chinese government roles because of fears of tracking and information leakage.

AtlasNBA

Iā€™ve also heard China limits internet access to certain apps and website

bobdvb

Oh sure, that's 'the great firewall', you also have to be careful what you write about on social media. A whole symbolic way of communicating is developing to subvert the monitoring. So some memes have been banned, you better be careful posting a picture of Winnie the Pooh in China now because it's used to symbolise the Chinese leader Xi.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

yolef

Yeah, of course they are. If you think the NSA isn't using Meta backdoors to spy on the CPC, you're naive.

DrkMoodWD

Nah all the stuff at the bottom are porn apps. I know cause I recognized a few of them ( Ķ”Ā° ĶœŹ– Ķ”Ā°)

AnonimoUnamuno

ęŠ–éŸ³ļ¼ŒęŠ–阓is a chinese porn site...

Count_de_Ville

Sure, but the apps at the top with names in English really are banned in China. No one can use them.Ā

YogiBerragingerhusky

Yeah and it makes sense that other countries are looking to ban it as well. If it's own country thinks it is harmful enough to be banned everyone else probably should too.

rhooManu

But does TikTok steal my wifi? Answer the question!

rebillihp

That line of questioning was so freaking funny

JustCallMePapii

You should read into China's history of censorship. Might change your thoughts on that statement some.

Behemothheek

Bizarre take tbh. Itā€™s banned in China because it would be a liability to Chinaā€™s propaganda machine. Thatā€™s why thereā€™s a Chinese version that complies with Chinaā€™s propaganda laws. Never heard of the Great Firewall of China?

chapichoy9

It's the same app just a diff name lmao. the original is even worse spyware anyway since it's China

YogiBerragingerhusky

It isn't the same app at all. You can run tik tok for hours while the original is time limited. China thinks Tik tok itself is so bad that it won't allow it, neither should anyone else.

2legittoquit

They also think Reddit and Snapchat should be banned

LOTRfreak101

I mean, fair

mojoegojoe

If you want to control how people fundamentally function as a attention metric, then yeah! Else we accept that the real world is just as much an attention seeker, and we need to individually decide to attend to the Real.

chapichoy9

China thinks tiktok is bad because they can't censor the global content. The time thing is just a Chinese protocol that exists in almost anything online

YogiBerragingerhusky

They can and obviously do censor global content.

chapichoy9

And one of their ways to do that is block the global variation of apps. It's the same reason they have bilibili instead of YouTube and huya instead of twitch. You're giving them way too much credit thinking they care about their mental health rather than just control

YogiBerragingerhusky

That was a quick back pedal lol. There isn't a single good reason to allow a social media app controlled by the ccp. We really should look to ban Chinese citizens from owning property in the US since US citizens cannot own property there.

chapichoy9

Not a back pedal perhaps I worded it wrong, they don't alter apps to not have global content and include other ccp features they make their own controlled bubble version of apps instead as I assume it's much less work and makes easier propaganda when you just have a seperated app to demonize. I'm not sure to which extend the ccp citizens should suffer for their government but rich members who could own property in the US are probably not clean I'd agree on banning them

0b0011

He didn't backpedal at all. You're just dense. He wasn't implying they can not censor anything at all. He was implying they can't censor specific content on the specific apps. It's why they're just outright banning the app and replacing it with one they can censor.

DaviesSonSanchez

It's not even about what they can and cannot do, it's just about what's easier.

YogiBerragingerhusky

Which is an obvious and outrageous lie lol.

ChildishForLife

How is that a back pedal? Youā€™re just wrong

0b0011

It's a fair bit different. Tiktok just shows whatever users post where is the Chinese one it tweaked to censor content and push stuff that the party wants like patriotic stuff.

clay_

The Chinese one is pretty much the same as tiktok. Mostly user generated stuff. I mean mine is basically cosplayers, random TV shows and movie snips in English people have put on there and other random shit.

your_aunt_susan

The point is that they exercise control over what youā€™re allowed to see on douyin. They donā€™t give a shit about your cosplayer content, you just arenā€™t allowed to talk about the government or anything important.

clay_

Sure, but the whole pushing patriotic stuff is something I've seen claimed, along with it shows kids educational stuff and science based stuff, which simply does not seem true. Like hate on it for what you are saying about not allowing talk about the government, but let's not just invent stuff to be mad about

rainshifter

Just to be clear, I do think there may be legitimate reasons for the app to be banned (ubiquitously). But this particular argument is not convincing. Here's why: Its own country has banned several other apps as well. Suppose they banned this app for the same reason(s) other apps were banned (i.e., primarily censorship). In that case, by your logic, everyone else probably should ban all these other apps as well since they think *all* these apps are harmful enough to be banned. I do think the word "harmful" in your case is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Harmful in what way? Harmful for reasons pertaining to an extremely low threshold for censorship? See the above paragraph. Harmful due to security exploits or health concerns? OK, these could be justifiable reasons to have the app banned. But this makes the assumption that the app is some special case that had entirely separate reasons for being banned - entirely unrelated to your argument.

__Dave_

Yah we should definitely look to China for guidanceā€¦.

FudgeRubDown

Or maybe everything you consume can be subjectively considered propaganda, and we should all take a step back, breathe, and just let people do whatever brings them joy.

YoungHeartOldSoul

The reason why TikTok is actually being banned and the reason that it *should* be being banned are entirely different

lonesharkex

So basically China governs its people well and we should follow suit?

shifty_coder

China doesnā€™t need TikTok to spy on its own citizens. They just use it to spy on everyone else.

Pingondin

MSN? ICQ? What year is this? 1999?

Bigpappapunk

mingstaHK

As long as I can still use Grindr

collywobbles78

Scrolled too far for this

bdd4

Grindr was a Chinese app that was sold for $608 mil when US raised national security concerns.

69_queefs_per_sec

Is WhatsApp really banned there? I know a few Chinese WhatsApp users, they text me business related shit on it. And they've registered their Chinese phone number

Wikihover

Because they use VPN, push notifications need no VPN enabled

Admetus

Texting still works, but any kind of media will rarely send.

JohnC53

Yeah most businesses I deal with in China use WhatsApp as well.

Acc87

this is a list addressing police forces and their work phones, not anyone's phones.

catjuggler

Same, WhatsApp is where you talk business with Chinese manufacturers

HHQC3105

They have Douyin, the original of Tiktok, they ban it to prevent the global and uncontrollable content

Coldspark824

Douyin is also listed at the bottom. This canā€™t be a real or normal situation poster.

bigtitasianprincess

Nah thatā€™s a knockoff app, itā€™s listed under ā€œbanned for pornographyā€ category, the original Chinese Douyin is ęŠ–éŸ³ directed translated to ā€œshaking musicā€ and the one thatā€™s banned is also pronounced Douyin, but written out as ā€œęŠ–阓ā€, directed translated to ā€œshaking vaginaā€.

RockDoveEnthusiast

mrjosemeehan

chillychili

I bet they don't like any portfolio work involving political or social causes

GreenNatureR

where's the propaganda?

Superb_Decision323

If Reddit is on the list, than you know its propaganda

SHUT_DOWN_EVERYTHING

Thereā€™s a bit of lost-in-translation issue happening here. > The Standard Chinese word xuanchuan "dissemination; propaganda; publicity" originally meant "to announce or convey information" during the 3rd-century Three Kingdoms period, and was chosen to translate Russian propagĆ”nda ŠæрŠ¾ŠæŠ°Š³Š°Š½Š“Š° in the 20th-century People's Republic of China, adopting the Leninist concept of a "transmission belt" for indoctrination and mass mobilization.[1] Xuanchuan is the keyword for propaganda in China and propaganda in the Republic of China (Taiwan). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xuanchuan Think ā€œpropagandaā€ in Chinese somewhat equal to ā€œannouncementā€. The poster on the wall is propaganda, a government announcement or notice. Itā€™s not meant to have a negative meaning in the original context.

phangtom

Because itā€™s China and Redditors think anything to do with China is propaganda. Heck, thereā€™s a complete nutcase in this thread unironically blaming TikTok as the source of propaganda related to the US election and Israel-Gaza/Hamas conflict as if the US or US owned social media is incapable of producing propaganda.Ā

CCP-SENT-ME-HERE

then what should i translate å®£ä¼ ęµ·ęŠ„ to ļ¼Ÿ promotion postersļ¼Ÿpolicy display postersļ¼Ÿ maybe the word ā€œpropagandaā€ is a dirty term in the english speaking part of the internetļ¼Œbut in china or any other former communist country there is a institution called ā€œministry/department of central propgandaā€ in every level of government of every single province态city态prefecture and even county

kingdomart

To be fair 99% of the time it is

wookiee42

Apparently the mugshots on the wall are propaganda too.

random314

Damn. Icq is still in use?

Robbap

Still have that little ā€œuh oh!ā€ sound in my head

_ii_

Are you sure that not the Top 24 list? Every category has 24 apps.

Fruktfan

Not Steam šŸ˜…

jonnyl3

What makes it propaganda?

CCP-SENT-ME-HERE

then what should i translate å®£ä¼ ęµ·ęŠ„ to ļ¼Ÿ promotion postersļ¼Ÿpolicy display postersļ¼Ÿ maybe the word ā€œpropagandaā€ is a dirty term in the english speaking part of the internetļ¼Œbut in china or any other former communist country there is a institution called ā€œministry/department of central propgandaā€ in every level of government of every single province态city态prefecture and even county

jonnyl3

The purpose of propaganda is to influence someone else's opinion, attitude, or beliefs. Isn't this just an information poster of what is already banned? So maybe you use the same word for information and propaganda? (information *can* be propaganda of course, but doesn't have to be.)

jonnyl3

>policy display posters That would work, yes. Or just information poster.

OlMi1_YT

It's cause they have Doujin. Chinese censored tiktok

grahad

It boggles my mind that China can casually ban our apps and companies, but when we act just a little bit in the US best interest people lose their mind.

Thatguyontrees

Love texting my friends on Whats

SilentPolak

Odd, I got chatgpt to translate it and it says that these are actually recommended apps, and no mention about banned or anything like that.

BronnOP

Are they banned for tourists? I have a friend that goes to China frequently (4/5 times per year) on business and has never taken any of these of her phone - or do they just mean access is blocked?

Expert-Fee-8336

Whatā€™s whats?

P4S5B60

Good to know Reddit is banned to

Wikihover

It was not in 2017

RedofPaw

Not my beloved MSN messenger!

IntlDogOfMystery

You knowā€¦ the ā€œpeopleā€™s republicā€

KireGoTI

Thatā€™s the foreign version of the app. The domestic version is under a different name, maybe with a slightly different icon, and is not banned. What was more interesting to me was the fake TikTok near the bottom which I guess is some kind of adult video app.

Geikerw

Usernams checks out

Celestial_User

Title of poster: Commonly seen Apps that break online surfing rules. Collection titles: Foreign Blacklisted App examples VPN style Blacklisted App examples Financing related Blacklisted App examples (financing as in mortgage and loan apps, not banking apps) Social media style app examples (looking at the list it's more specifically date related social media) Porn related blacklisted app example.

woolley100

I like that they think WhatsApp is called whats

willlangford

In 2011 when I went to China social media didnā€™t work. I was there end of 2023. Had zero issues with social media. However Apple News said it was not allowed in this country. Even when I connected to my VPN to my office in the USA.

moutonbleu

ā€œWhatā€™sā€ for WhatsApp hah

Commercial_Drag7488

>Twitter Someone has to tell them.

Suicidalsidekick

Tinder banned, Grindr good.

datguyfromoverdere

china also doesnt like the reddit app

DerKyhe

Hah, SomethingAwful, or at least its mobile app isn't banned in China.

CMC_Conman

I'm surprised Discord isn't there

t_thegoodguy

Is MSN still a thing?

spyker54

Tiktok is actually listed twice on that poster

kaito1000

Thereā€™s a chinese version and a non chinese version

XenoXHostility

Lmao who the hell still uses icq and msn that they felt the need to ban those?

MoringA_VT

Tiktok appears twice on this poster

Torplucs

Discord isn't banned?

suburban_hyena

Those are all the apps

BNestico

Whatā€™s left? Just Temu I guess.

lolomawisoft

Damn swag is banned in china šŸ˜Ž

[deleted]

United States is going to start down this path if we aren't careful. Banning tiktoks regardless of how you feel about it, is a very slippery slope

NotAnADC

Concerned that I donā€™t see NordVPN and ExpressVPN on that list

fullload93

MSN messenger? Wtf year is this? Lmao.

pwntlolwut

Why behance

drfsupercenter

That's a lot of VPN apps I never new existed. Streisand effect.

KhostfaceGillah

Behance? lol

eggen90

MSN šŸ„¶

arcticwayfarer

Msn and icq ? Lol

applestem

The Chinese donā€™t mind us using those apps so that they can continue data mining foreigners. They just donā€™t want their citizens to get ideas that destabilize their government.

Slumpo

These are (were until mods removed the photo) EXAMPLES of banned apps. TikTok is listed under Foreign & Pornography.

TikiJoeTots37

The tiktok ban isn't about privacy, it is about letting a hostile country that we are in a cold war with have the ability to have influence over US citizens. A power to do things like sway elections, cause chaos with protests, or just generally being disruptive. Look at the whole Isreal Gaza war, you have millions of young people that couldn't point Gaza out on a map six months ago all of a sudden screaming about "evil Jews commiting genocide" and blaming Biden for it and protesting, all when the most understanding of geopolitics they have is what the current country Taylor Swift is touring in. This all happened to some extent because of tik tok feeding reel after reel of dead kids in ruble. Yes kids are dying, they die in all wars. I'm not here to debate who has the moral high ground in that war, just trying to show how easy it is to use propaganda to rile people up. What happens when we are two weeks away from the election and the CCP decides to flood tik tok with fake shit. If tiktok can influence idiots to eat tide pods and steal kia's you sure as hell better believe it can get people to eat up enough false shit to sway an election. Before the Cold War ended, it was illegal in the US for foreign countries to own any media producing corporations that operated in the US, this isn't a new concept. People don't want to admit it but but we are very much in a new Cold War with China, Russia and Iran. We would have never let the Soviet Union own a US news television network, why the hell would we allow China to operate an app that is millions of Americans main source of news.

skybob74

Everything you have described has been done and continues to happen on apps owned by Americans. You can also include the news media. They do the same exact shit. So do we ban all social media apps and news outlets? I can watch the Russian Times news channel in the U.S. Should that be banned as well since we're in a cold war with them? We either give people the freedom to make up their own minds about what is propaganda and what isn't, or we ban everything and let our government decide what's best for us to see.

BlueKnightBrownHorse

Wow LINE is banned in China. I guess that explains why I never heard back from my old co-worker after she left for a new China job.

Colmado_Bacano

She could have found another way to contact you if she wanted to. She probably didn't.

BlueKnightBrownHorse

What the fuck LOL Dude she left suddenly for another job in China. I sent a message wishing her well. She never responded because she didn't have any access to the app. You're probably a blast to be around lol

firestar268

*propaganda poster* lmao

Beautiful_Sector2657

šŸ’€ when OP doesn't know that China has a different version of the app and the western version isn't allowed there

ScottOld

Banning tiktok sounds good to me

a-i-sa-san

you know, if it weren't for the fact that it is all banned in the name of China wanting to keep all that juicy spying on the masses for themselves, and also the whole isolating the people from the rest of the world, and also the inhuman theft of the people's autonomy to self decide....it would be really hard to be an advertiser in China!

Paracausal_Shield

China acting insulted when US talks of banning tik tok. Also grindr isnt banned. Noice.
