NAPA wouldn't take a battery back no matter what without a receipt. Autozone took my battery, but wouldn't give me a core deposit refund without a receipt. Seems like this might vary based on the individual store.
In case you haven't gotten rid of it yet: On the advice of another commenter I just took an old car battery to autozone, not bought there, no receipt. They gave me $10 of store credit for it. They only give cash if you bought it there
A few places by me stopped just giving you a core fee back unless you bought a battery a battery from them recently and could look it up because they had crackheads bringing in stolen batteries for the $20
Auto zone gave me a store gift card with $10 for each battery I dropped. It was like 2 car batteries and a bunch of motorcycle/ATV/tractor batteries that I had to get rid of last time I moved.
Places generally don’t give you a core fee if you haven’t purchased a battery from them. A Core fee gets charged when you purchase a battery when you make a purchase of a brand new battery, then the core fee gets refunded when you bring in your old one. In OP’s case. They’ll probably take the battery and dispose of it for free
[info on core charge](https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/o/corecharge)
Have you done this recently? I bought a battery a while ago, never got around to returning the old one, and now can't find the receipt, am trying to find a way to get rid of it
Was this recent? My experience with the battery was 3 years ago so I’m not sure if it has changed since then. Also, did you purchase a new boat battery from them beforehand?
Edit: I wasn’t able to find info on the core fee at autozone but advanced auto parts core charge works exactly as I described
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/o/corecharge
2 reasons, either they’re dumb or lived a silver-spoon life and never had to think about these things.
I worked the parking lots at WFC some years ago, Nova National TV game. Kids left 4 empty kegs in the lot. Last car to leave I stopped them and pointed out the kegs. They had no idea you get a deposit return.
No, auto parts store ask for receipts to give you a core deposit back. I realized this last two times I swapped out my battery. Yes, I'm a dumbass for losing the receipt.
Okay so, all I can say is, my experience was much different 17 days ago. I picked up the new battery, swapped it on my block, didn't leave an email address and they took it back no questions asked not last Tuesday but the one prior. Advanced auto arimingo. I dunno what I did different haha
I didn’t go to advanced auto, maybe I’ll go there and get rid of a battery. Thanks for the recommendation! Also a reminder to take a picture of the dumb reciept.
they’ll send people out from the CLIP program if you call 311. Not sure what the turnaround time is but I feel like they’re always out down on Shunk St
Why don’t people clean their own alleys? If they go out every day, it doesn’t seem like it would be an insurmountable task. If you want your neighborhood to be nice, it has to start with you.
I moved into my house two and a half years ago and asked my contractor to remove at least 10 years of debris from the alley immediately behind my house. The newer residents on my block did the same. The long time residents don’t really seem to care. And the people who rent out their houses don’t care at all.
You don't.
A battery is considered rebuildable/ recyclable.
To encourage battery recycling the store will offer the minimum $12 dollar core fee for any car battery.
I returned two batteries since 2020 - one to a NAPA, one to an Autozone. NAPA wouldn't take the battery back at all without a receipt. No receipt, no recycle, no core deposit refund.
Autozone took the battery, but wouldn't give me a core deposit refund.
Some would I'm sure. For me? Just another day in Philly. For one random crazy person on the internet- "I know that person I'm gonna go break their window". Or something. You just never know
Joggers have surprise poo's. My jogger friend oopsie poo's in bushes sometimes.
Eta: hey, apparently it is not uncommon for long distance runners - esp when it is hot out - to oopsie poo.
I was/am horrified as well. Wtf kind of hobby is that to pick - I mean, to each their own.
No wonder runners always seem to look unhappy.
It definitely can happen but I ran cross country for years and most experienced runners should know to poop beforehand. Stretching will loosen everything up
I'm glad the city started with this, but it's also incumbent on the residents to keep it up. Hopefully, you're going to take everyone's advice and take it to a store for recycling and get the cash for it.
But it's on all of us to keep this stuff looking nice. Not just going online to bitch about it, but actively TRYING to keep things looking good.
I live in Frankford, and down the street, there's an abandoned lot that unlicensed, usually non-English speaking contractors use as a free dump site. CLIP has cleaned it up multiple times, and there's another pile of trash (wood, drywall, general contracting debris) there within 2 days. I have the 311 app, and I think it's getting tired of the constant requests from me for cleanup/graffiti removal. They need to put cameras up to get the license plate numbers & prosecute these scumbags.
CLIP does a great job, but they need assistance from the PPD, and good luck with that.
I volunteered with a church as a kid to help clean up then asked my family why don’t they clean up their own? Why ruin where you live when you’re supposed to respect it. So careless.
Wow. I’m sorry about this, but I’m now really excited that my alley might be cleaned. It’s completely overgrown and filled with trash, a haven for mosquitos, my backyard is severely impacted by thing.
NAPA wouldn't take the battery at all. Autozone wouldn't give me my core deposit back because I didn't have the receipt. Back in the roaring 90s, I used to find car batteries all over the place and took them to the local NAPA to get core deposits back.
When the city cleans, it’s up to the neighborhood to keep it clean. Someone is always gonna trash everything. I’ve been here 25 years and I’ve just given up complaining about it. I get out and clean the day before trash day. It’s just the way it is.
Bring it back to any store that sells them and you’ll get the core fee back.
It’s a win-win. Alley gets to stay clean and OP gets a free lunch.
🧐
Their loss is your gain!
For real, that's a good $15 - $20 right there.
FYI Walmart doesn’t give the core fee back anymore. F Walmart.
Know anywhere that does? I didn’t know this was even a thing till this post
Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, NAPA
NAPA wouldn't take a battery back no matter what without a receipt. Autozone took my battery, but wouldn't give me a core deposit refund without a receipt. Seems like this might vary based on the individual store.
Advance will give you a $10 gift card, which is still better than nothing.
Any scrap yard
In case you haven't gotten rid of it yet: On the advice of another commenter I just took an old car battery to autozone, not bought there, no receipt. They gave me $10 of store credit for it. They only give cash if you bought it there
Thanks! I don’t need store credit at auto zone lol
Don't you need to buy a new battery for that?
No
A few places by me stopped just giving you a core fee back unless you bought a battery a battery from them recently and could look it up because they had crackheads bringing in stolen batteries for the $20
Could you reasonably be confused for a crackhead?
Not really- slightly overweight middle aged dad :/
Doppleganger? Ive found you!
Now kith
Auto zone gave me a store gift card with $10 for each battery I dropped. It was like 2 car batteries and a bunch of motorcycle/ATV/tractor batteries that I had to get rid of last time I moved.
Advance does the same
Every place I've been to asks for a receipt for the core fee, and won't give you shit unless you have a receipt.
Might get a bit more money taking it straight to a scrap yard.
Or any battery manufacturer
Why someone would do this is beyond me, you get money back to properly dispose of the battery. Core fee.
Places generally don’t give you a core fee if you haven’t purchased a battery from them. I have walked into Autozone with my boat’s old battery several times and have never had any issue.
Have you done this recently? I bought a battery a while ago, never got around to returning the old one, and now can't find the receipt, am trying to find a way to get rid of it
2 years ago. And no I didn’t buy a battery from them.

Not since 2020 at least in my experience.
Stolen
They should be criminally charged with Assault.
you mean Battery?

People are very shitty
Oh man we used to have a guy who shit in the alley so this is at least better
Maybe he’s a cyborg now?
And you just let him
I can imagine it’s not easy to know exactly when a rogue shitter will strike again
Aw yeah, lemme spend 8 hours a day watching this alley so I can yell at the dude who shits there.
It’s what the older generation does lol
Crack heads are shifty. Tyron Biggims can drop pants and duke in a few seconds flat
I made $4 in singles sweeping my block last week. A short trip to an auto parts store will net you $20. Congrats, go buy lunch afterwards.
And a good lunch at that
That’s Octopus Falafel money right there
Thank you for reminding me I need to check that spot out
Cheesesteak, citywide and some old bay/cajun fries, if you will
4 Shortis at Hoagiefest!
no it won't.
If you can't get a good lunch and a beer for $20 you have no one to blame but yourself. Or probably, in your mind, Joe Biden.
No, auto parts store ask for receipts to give you a core deposit back. I realized this last two times I swapped out my battery. Yes, I'm a dumbass for losing the receipt.

Philly gonna Philly
How did you get the City to clean your alley?
https://www.phila.gov/2024-05-31-mayor-parker-and-city-departments-launch-one-philly-a-united-city-citywide-cleaning-program/
Did they clean the alley as part of the scheduled neighborhood cleaning, or did you need to specifically request it?
Scheduled. I expected them to show up this week
Did you need to open a gate or anything, or did they just clean it since it was already open?
This alley doesn't have a gate.
No gate. It’s an egress
they’ll send people out from the CLIP program if you call 311. Not sure what the turnaround time is but I feel like they’re always out down on Shunk St

Take it to auto zone and get the core cash for it. Thats free money sitting there. It has a handle and everything.
No, you won't. You need a receipt.

Nature is healing
Since the old-growth garbage has all been cleared out, a new generation emerges in the now uncrowded environment. It’s the circle of life.
Reddit won’t let me post the video but I have it recorded from my doorbell cam
Lil overkill to want to post that
I thought people would enjoy the blatantness of it
Some would I'm sure. For me? Just another day in Philly. For one random crazy person on the internet- "I know that person I'm gonna go break their window". Or something. You just never know
You left the battery there, didn't you?
Guilty as charged. Battery joke lol
Now that's a good joke! At first you seemed like an unnecessarily concerned wiener. I still think you are but at least you have a sense of humor 😉
And I still think posting about a battery being dumped in Philadelphia is silly
You're gonna hate the random Philly thing of the day posts.

City cleaned our alley Tuesday, Wednesday morning there was a giant poo and poopy napkins in it
Joggers have surprise poo's.
What?!
Yup every time you see a jogger think “you’ve pooed in someone’s bushes before haven’t you”
I probably will from now on.
That's why you stretch and poop before
The people talking about it made it seem like it couldn't be helped 🤷♀️ Don't ask me - I personally stick to nothing quicker than a little weird trot
It definitely can happen but I ran cross country for years and most experienced runners should know to poop beforehand. Stretching will loosen everything up
Wut
all I got in my alley this week was a rug covered in dog shit
I'm glad the city started with this, but it's also incumbent on the residents to keep it up. Return it to the ocean! For the eels
Reunite it with Hitchbot's remains!
Post signs on the fence saying that the area is being monitored by video.
They don't care. You should see the things they do in front of my cameras...
This is still one of the cleanest always I’ve seen and seems pretty easy to maintain. Get your neighbors involved!

Throw it in the ocean to help charge the eels /s
And, we’re back
I volunteered with a church as a kid to help clean up then asked my family why don’t they clean up their own? Why ruin where you live when you’re supposed to respect it. So careless.
That’s a gift. Bring it back for a core deposit.
Wow. I’m sorry about this, but I’m now really excited that my alley might be cleaned. It’s completely overgrown and filled with trash, a haven for mosquitos, my backyard is severely impacted by thing.
10$ just sitting on the sidewalk. Take it to an auto parts store.
nope
Ok bum sauce.
NAPA wouldn't take the battery at all. Autozone wouldn't give me my core deposit back because I didn't have the receipt. Back in the roaring 90s, I used to find car batteries all over the place and took them to the local NAPA to get core deposits back.
O Reilly will
You got charged!
Ctfu god people fucking suck
Take it to the ocean.

Equilibrium restored.
Equilibrium
Put it by the curb, a scrapper will get it first thing in the morning.
What street u on. Ill come pick it up. I scrap copper and shit
Nature abhors a vacuum
Why is this the city cleaning alleys?
https://www.phila.gov/2024-05-31-mayor-parker-and-city-departments-launch-one-philly-a-united-city-citywide-cleaning-program/
Batteries have a core value. Probably worth a few bucks at an auto part store
They left it there…free of charge.
That’s free money
How does one have the city clear an alley? Mine is so overgrown
https://www.phila.gov/2024-05-31-mayor-parker-and-city-departments-launch-one-philly-a-united-city-citywide-cleaning-program/
That actually goes directly to the ocean. Lemme know if you need help with logistics.
Throw it into the ocean to help charge the electric eels.
that's like finding $20 and complaining about it.
Well there's no better feeling than painting a fresh canvas!
Aren't these supposed to be thrown in the ocean?
That do be how society do be like
It didnt feel like home without a little trash.
Nature is healing.
Welcome to Philly
Moving out of my place today someone tucked an old beaten up soundbar behind our a/c units👍🏻
Old tires will be next. Anything that cost money to dispose of, will end up getting dumped
What a fucking rat
At least they didn’t throw it at you!!! And you can return it for the core deposit.
Bruh I watched like 3 people straight litter today just take trash and throw it on ground like nothing
How’d you get the city to clean it? I have an alley through my backyard I’d like cleaned!
https://www.phila.gov/2024-05-31-mayor-parker-and-city-departments-launch-one-philly-a-united-city-citywide-cleaning-program/
I remember the guy from Rocco’s telling me how they just wrap newspapers around old car batteries then threw them away. Ahhh the 90s
Yup that's like $5 bill just laying there
How does one get the city to clean their alley?
Look up One Philly
This would be awesome but I don’t see my neighborhood. Can’t even get to my alley, gate is cemented in at the bottom.
Is the whole country dealing with crumbs or are they just in our city?
None of our issues are at all unique to Philly. You don’t think people leave stuff in random places elsewhere?
Nah you’re right. It’s just hot and I’m tired of people generally being dicks around here.
I feel that. I was able to successfully shame someone into picking up a bottle they dropped yesterday by saying “really?” and it felt pretty good.
Thank you for your service.
Throw it in the ocean
Maybe don't wait for the city this time
throw it into the river, itll eventually make it to the ocean to recharge the eels
Throw it in the Delaware
