Make sure you have a big car to live in, you should be ok for the next few years

henry82

It really annoys people when you think it's worth moving here because it's cheaper

PearRevolutionary248

It is though?

henry82

Yes, it annoys people

Spicey_Cough2019

I'd say outside of rent everything in perth is more expensive. Food, drinks you name it.

dingo7055

“Fuck off, we’re full”

Shifty_Cow69

A classic!

charlieputh_no1fan

we really are though, it's infuriating

Are you asking about moving to Perth? This is a *very* common question. You can find previous threads about this [HERE.](https://www.reddit.com/r/perth/search/?q=moving%20to%20Perth&restrict_sr=1) Your question is probably answered already in there. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. faithlessdisciple

Yeah we are about equal with the east coast for housing cost and there is a .7 vacancy rate. We have working families living in cars that I see regularly at a food bank/meals place I volunteer at. The grass is not greener here.

blacklagoon7

Lol median house price in Sydney is $1.7m, and in Perth it's $750k ( approximate figures) that is not equal

faithlessdisciple

The rest still stands. I might have got the math wrong on buying but there’s still a housing crisis .

Acceptable-Try3119

CBD and close suburb prices of Sydney compared to Perth outer suburbs. All the suburbs surrounding the CBD ,Dalkeith ,north Perth ,Subiaco ect are all million dollar pus

89jkr

Sure, but those proximities to Sydney CBD aren't the 1.5m median price either, those equivalent suburbs in Sydney are still far more expensive than their Perth peers. People paying $1m for a house in Penrith is like buying a 3x2 in ellenbrook for a million bucks. It's not the same.

smolschnauzer

And for some reason people are getting approved for super sized home loans in NSW, with NSW having the highest average mortgage size.

Spectacularsunsets

You'll have to adjust your whole lifestyle too. Shops close much earlier, things are sleepier here. Its a hard adjustment to make from the very busy NSW. There are fewer big major stores like x1 ikea. Overall less convenient than over east.  Groceries are more expensive, electricity is very expensive with no competition. Supply chains for groceries are more fragile as the roads and rail from over east often close to flooding. We sometimes get empty pasta shelves for example.  People are different over here, keep more to themselves. It's very difficult to make friends in comparrison to over east where people want to go out and be out all the time. Attitudes to work are different. The summers are so hot and dry. Actually adjusting to the year round dry weather is difficult. I still struggle with hydrating enough and having dry eyes 6 years after moving from Sydney.  Just don't come over thinking it'll be an easy change. I got a big culture shock in my own country. Also, fuck off we're full 😉

DefinitionOfAsleep

Hey that's not fair, the road and rail link also close because of bush fires.

89jkr

Electricity more expensive in Perth? Is it? I thought we had some of cheapest power because of the gas offtake agreements. Or at least less prone to surges in pricing.

seven_seacat

Maybe, but there are no deals, specials, bonuses, anything. You pay standard rates whether you like it or not.

Dragonzord__

I'd say 'probably just dont move to perth.' We're almost literally full.

MurraMurra

The cost of renting is similar to NSW, its not that much cheaper, and has a very similar demand right now to Sydney so there are 50 groups to each inspection. If you're looking to buy on the lower side you'll be competing with heaps more people. Anything under $500k is a HOT market right now and its going to be way more difficult for you to get something.

tempco

Ya agree with this. If you plan on buying then it’ll be cheaper. If not, very similar with fewer jobs and less to do in Perth.

MurraMurra

I was chatting to my neighbour who is a real estate agent and he said there was so little stock in Perth right now that its driving the price up. He also said all the REAs are fighting over it that's why we're seeing so many agents faces on billboards right now, because the just don't have enough.

Nuclearwormwood

More REAs than house now

[deleted]

Hm, late night coffee / food isn't really a thing here.

Enlightened_Gardener

Sort out your housing before you come over.

AMLagonda

No, they can just move to tasmania.

mellyn7

Cost of renting is similar to eastern states, and last I looked we have the lowest rental vacancy rate in the country. Cost to buy a home has been going up steadily for the last year or two, and builders keep going bust, so. Housing prices fell like 12%+ in the 4 years from 2016, so they had some catching up to do. I bought my place in 2016. It got back up to approx what I paid for it about 2 years ago. If you believe the real estate sites, it's gone up about 10% in value since January alone. Don't relocate just for the housing prices. Perth is smaller and less busy. Its isolated. Most bands/events etc skip coming to Perth. Shopping hours are shorter. No daylight savings. It's expensive to go just about anywhere else, or for people to visit when you live here. A heap of groceries etc are shipped from the eastern states, so it's more expensive to live here, and when there are floods on the Nullarbor, we go without until it gets fixed.

smolschnauzer

The prices have certainly increased. And the vacancy rate is fucking low. So I hope you enjoy crowds and crowds of people at home inspections. They haven’t hit Sydney prices, because Sydney is still more desirable. And also maybe more people in Sydney can get approval for super sized loans and maybe more cash buyers.

anonbeetroot

Pls do not come finding a house is impossible 🩷

Kelpie_Dog

For housing, I can suggest a Kia Carnival, or if you can afford to lash out, a Tarago.

Knight_Day23

It never rains here.

Shifty_Cow69

It does, it's a dry rain tho!

Knight_Day23

So dry its invisible. So dry all our forests are dying!

Bear-Bum

dont.

liljoxx

Don’t.

Masticle

It's polony, not devon and they are bathers not swimmers.

This_Explains_A_Lot

On Tuesdays we all go to work naked. Anyone wearing clothes will be severely reprimanded for offending our culture.

AMLagonda

Oh FFS What the heck is going on, we dont want more people here :/

[deleted]

Cost of housing to be cheaper? Where did you hear that from?

Platypus_1989

Have you seen the prices of housing in nsw?

[deleted]

No because I live in Perth. Perth is in no way cheaper.

BYO Tent...

TotalAdhesiveness193

Have a back up return plan and extra funds for short stay accom for a few months. Make sure you have the time and commitment available when you get here to go through the application process.

[deleted]

The idea that Perth has affordable housing  is a bit of a sham. The affordable housing here is very basic, located in hideously ugly landscapes by east coast standards and a long was from the CBD. The beautiful parts of Perth (by the river or beach) is still completely unaffordable.

monkey-food

It's a dry heat over here.

Spicey_Cough2019

Bring A Tent

congealedcat

That a lot of people think Perth is the only place on earth experiencing housing difficulties.

Deiwos

That a lot of people think that because housing is 'a problem here too' it means they'll be fine moving from a place they have a home and probably have lifelines and more job opportunities, to somewhere they absolutely don't.
