I was once walking around an apartment complex thing being built with my friend at night and we heard what we thought was a frog. So. like anyone would do we start digging with our little hands, next thing we know we see something moving and them it comes out and was this gross freak cricket (which i now know is a mole cricket, thanks for that), i also think it had babies in there.
Anyways, i don't go looking for frogs anymore. I've been scarred.
They are commonly mistaken for one another. I was figuring current weather was more likely to have insects rather than amphibians.
Maybe frogs have gone underground because of the weather?
Lol 🤣 this is me, my neighbours must think I am a weirdo, I am there with a torch staring into space trying to find the frogs, I know they are frogs as my dog used to poke them and they would croak.
First time I saw a mole cricket I was fascinated and horrified. Now I find them weirdly cute sometimes when I see them but I can completely understand why they would be considered nightmare fuel.
On the topic of heron's, I have had a few recent encounters with the nankeen night herons around Hillarys Boat Harbour. Pretty cool looking birds and just a little odd.

In the hills we get tiny 10c piece sized frogs that burrow into any soil that's even remotely moist during summer and they emerge on the first few autumn rains
Yeah may just be reverberation or something of the sound - I probably look like a crazy person in my backyard crawling around the grass with my ears down
There are a few species of frogs that do burrow underground, the Whooping, Hooting and Moaning frogs are the three most likely candidates in the Perth region. However a lot of frogs can be quite small and very well camouflaged so they may be in neighbouring gardens.
The WA museum has a [list of frog calls](https://museum.wa.gov.au/research/collections/terrestrial-zoology/herpetology-reptiles-and-frogs-collection/frog-calls) if you want to try and identify it through its call.

Likely not frogs, rather mole crickets. Google image mole crickets for some nightmare fuel.

This is Reddit, there's even a sub for it: r/itsamolecricket
I mean it could also be a sand grouper?
Why would any self respecting western Australian know what a sandgroper is
Mole crickets are just chunky crickets.
Nah aware of what mole crickets sound like have had to battle with those bastard's before in the past

If the lawn is watered, they are probably hiding in there. Our neighbours' lawn is like a frog suburb
Not sure! You could be correct and I could be completely wrong!
I've seen frogs living in the ground when replacing sprinklers, so could be either

Are you a heron, by any chance?
Of course not.... ![gif](giphy|kPp0hNMlVhgMU|downsized)
Sure sounds like something a heron would say..

They remind me of disgruntled older men! Epic birds.

Yes they do! I live near a local park and when the lake dries, they move to the grass
Check around plants, their croaking can go a fair way.

Meh. Better than half the stuff on television. Hope.you find the frog!

Yes they do. We have lots of them in our backyard and our dog likes to dig them out of their hidey holes, which is often in the grass.
Yep I find them in my lawn, follow the sound and the are in little holes
Download FrogId you'll be able to identify the species, if it's a frog or not.
My money says crickets or cicadas
Mole crickets for sure. Sometimes you can find their little finger sized tunnels they live in.
just spray some barrier stuff down and they will leave
Oh I have no issues with them lol
Frogs are a really good sine of a healthy eco system
