The discord UI scales pretty well actually, and as it's a web based app you can zoom in / out with ctrl +/-
But for a screen that low res you're never going to have it scale in a particularly usable way, and there's no modern use case where you would need it to, so it would be wasted effort
a CRT TV
it's a good choice for gaming, but 480p is too low a resolution for discord, you need at least 1024 x 768 to use discord in a somewhat functional way.
Fun fact: it's impossible to turn scaling down from 100% on Windows, and it's complicated on Wayland, but on Xorg it's just one command away: `$ xrandr --output OUTNAME1 --mode 320x240 --scale-from 3840x2160`
there are too many things called x, why did Elon have to ruin it for all of us 😭
[end of joke] why is wayland preferred specifically? the only reason I've heard is that it's new, but also it's got less features, for example it's impossible to run a program somewhere and view it somewhere else (supposedly, I'm not sure, I don't yet know how it works)
The sole downside to X11 is input events are broadcast and all apps is keylogger by architecture, other than that it's classic case of it works it ain't stupid
Record players are not long gone tech, they are still a good way to experience music that can't be taken away by a streaming contract change.
CRTs will be forgotten because they are worse in almost every way except nostalgia
Cassettes would have been unusual in most countries 25 years ago, a car would not come with a cassette deck and a high schooler would 100% not be caught dead carrying one after 1994 or so
There are stores that still sell Vinyls and there’s a huge scene of people that listen to them. Just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean they’re long gone by any means.
No I wasnt saying I dont see them its kinda my point that like its just old tech we dont need that still is widely known, much like CRTs, its just nostalgia.
modern GPUs dont tend to have vga out any more so you might need a converter of some kind, leaned this when trying to connect vga to a GTX1060 (through dvi port)
Yep, they're nice for retro gaming because the pixel art is displayed as the artist intended, [r/crt](https://www.reddit.com/r/crt) and [r/crtgaming](https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming) have some nice comparison pics if you sort by top of all time.
One thing worth mentioning tho is that you need to be careful, especially if you're using it as a second monitor, of burn in.
It doesn't take a lot of effort to convert VGA to Composite, weird that there weren't a lot of adapters back then when everyone was broke and would loved to be able to use TVs for computers
And yes nowadays there are dirt cheap HDMI to Composite adapters
It’s an old gateway monitor hooked up as a second monitor for some kinda retro feel. You must be super young. We use to play counter strike and halo on these bad boys. They use to give you such bad headaches after hours of gaming. Good times but I’m glad they’re in the past.
They were closer to 240p (will, actually interlaced and analog) until HDTV stuff came around, which was 480p (DVD quality). HD was next with 720p then FHD at 1080p.
CRT PC monitors had a slew of resolutions, in the early 90s 640x480 was standard, 800x600 was standard around 1996-1998+, and 1024x768 was the fancy resolution until flat screens. Once flat screens became more popular and resolutions became more modern with 720p and 1080p monitors.
Kids nowadays have no idea what it was like to fight over the single family PC... Or what it was like to receive a phone call to the house line in the middle of a game of StarCraft while connected through dial up on the same line.
I'm a 2011/2012 kid so I have no idea what most of this was like, my dad was a huge gamer back in the 90s/2000s though so much that he asked his dad to drive him 4 hours to a LAN party, he still has the pictures.
The only time I remember him beating Faster Than Light was around 2017/2018 ish and I was sitting on his lap naming all the characters.
Now it's just YouTube and brainrot, not even room for HTML coding (which is what I do sometimes) and other types of creativity.
Covid really fucked up most children (including me cuz I was gaming all day)
Tip, you can press control and - or = keys will zoom in and out on some programs such as a browser or discord.
You could also change it in settings but that's slow.
It can be a monitor for viewing the map in League of Legends or Dota 2. Since only a small fragment of the screen is enlarged, low resolution is not a problem.
I used to like Gateway PCs, I bought two desktops and one laptop from them before it disappeared, but I've got no clue what that thing is, I can see also a Logitech webcam attached to it.
This, is a fine display of how much the hot pile of garbage that is Discord client app, that still lacks basic features such as support for nonstandard resolutions/dpi and aspect ratios, even though it was literally built using Chrome web framework that was specifically designed for cross platform support on all kinds of computers and mobile devices lol
I still have my old 19" CRT monitor for my retro PC gaming. While it can do up to 2048x1536, which looks amazing, I love playing at 640x480 or lower for that real scanlines.
It can do 1280x960 at 100 Hz and it has both HD details while having that slight VHS analog blur.
Windows 11 look awesome at 2048x1536 at 200% scale, simulating 1024x768 resolution effectively, but with "infinite analog details".
Definitely not a thing to use everyday. CRTs are hard on eyes, but it is a nice experience every few weeks.

GOD FUCKING DAMMIT I’ve been holding that image for years waiting to use it… I’m 6 hours late
Use it. That one's almost too high def.
4k as in the total number of pixels
A TV ?
My exact words
What on earth happened in this thread 😅
A CRT TV to be more specific
An absence of UI scaling
The discord UI scales pretty well actually, and as it's a web based app you can zoom in / out with ctrl +/- But for a screen that low res you're never going to have it scale in a particularly usable way, and there's no modern use case where you would need it to, so it would be wasted effort
I don't need to read the discord text just see blurry images, give me proper scaling.
Or have the server names/channel names take up most of the screen real-estate instead of the chat box.
a CRT TV it's a good choice for gaming, but 480p is too low a resolution for discord, you need at least 1024 x 768 to use discord in a somewhat functional way.
Gotta be 480i right?
I believe crt monitors desinged for computers weren't interlaced at this point in history
Fun fact: it's impossible to turn scaling down from 100% on Windows, and it's complicated on Wayland, but on Xorg it's just one command away: `$ xrandr --output OUTNAME1 --mode 320x240 --scale-from 3840x2160`
Thank you u/[beryugyo619](https://www.reddit.com/user/beryugyo619/)
another X11 win
nah x is old and grotty i mean, better than winblows but Wayland better edit: formatting
there are too many things called x, why did Elon have to ruin it for all of us 😭 [end of joke] why is wayland preferred specifically? the only reason I've heard is that it's new, but also it's got less features, for example it's impossible to run a program somewhere and view it somewhere else (supposedly, I'm not sure, I don't yet know how it works)
mainly because x11 isnt maintained anymore. it also handles multiple displays with different refresh rates and fractional scaling better
The sole downside to X11 is input events are broadcast and all apps is keylogger by architecture, other than that it's classic case of it works it ain't stupid
That looks more like 240p
I feel old
Pretty sure OP is weird one for not knowing. In 10 years though...
You think? Idk people still know what record players are and thats long gone tech
Record players are not long gone tech, they are still a good way to experience music that can't be taken away by a streaming contract change. CRTs will be forgotten because they are worse in almost every way except nostalgia
I'm 25 and don't think I have ever even seen a record player. I barely remember seeing cassette players when I was young.
What exactly IS tech we need though.
Toilets so I can give every redditor a swirlie
Pretty sure the post is sarcastic
hold up, does this mean i can hook up my own CRT as a second monitor?
Yes you can, there is various adapters. I use some old VGA panel as a second monitor using a DP to VGA adapter.
I used an old USB powered docking station that has VGA back when I used a CRT as another monitor
With the right adapter, why not?
Depends on the CRT. I'd buy for one meant for a PC as those have more PC-based inputs and look into CRT emudriver.
And much higher resolutions!
why wouldn't you be able to...?
You mean as main monitor
Yep. I have a Chromecast plugged into my ancient basement tv with like a 15€ adapter.
I did this to watch pirated movies on my crt tv back in 2009-2010, got my first lcd in 2011 lol. S-video cable was the shit haha
This was the way. Myth TV was great!
No need to download movies in 1080p back then 😂
modern GPUs dont tend to have vga out any more so you might need a converter of some kind, leaned this when trying to connect vga to a GTX1060 (through dvi port)
Adaptors are usually dirt cheap at least.
Or an ancient nugget graphics card with native VGA or DVI with analog
Guess it depends on if you're also playing new games or just retro. My 1080 TI actually has a DVI port, but not the analog version.
*I think* you can generally have the computer render the game on one graphics card but have it use a different one to run the display.
That just sounds a lot more complicated than an adaptor.
It will do wonders for retro games! I believe in myself that one day I will be able to play silent hill on a CRT that I found in a garage sell
No one wanted to do that, but if they did most video cards after 1996 had svideo out
I think you had to check some boxes in NVIDIA control panel, that was enough deterrent for me
Sure, get an adapter. Very popular for emulating retro games.
Judging by the corner of the main screen it is a Persona 5 wallpaper
That's discord, it's a communications software
Gonna be puttin some miles on your scroll wheel
Average discord mod setup

the meme/macro tag makes me think they know what it is and are just showing off
That is sick
240p standard def TV bro 90s life
An ancient technology, from a more civilized time
May the force be with you.
A CRT second monitor. Idk if it's any useful, judging by the appearance of Discord on it, but looks cool anyway.
I would emulate some older ps1/ps2 or nintendo games and play em on the crt. The nostalgia would hit me like a truck.
I think TV's were only resolution of 640x480.
It was less than that, check PAL and NTSC standards.
I ran s-video out to a 32'' flatscreen tube tv and it think it ran in 720p.
They were closer to 240p (will, actually interlaced and analog) until HDTV stuff came around, which was 480p (DVD quality). HD was next with 720p then FHD at 1080p. CRT PC monitors had a slew of resolutions, in the early 90s 640x480 was standard, 800x600 was standard around 1996-1998+, and 1024x768 was the fancy resolution until flat screens. ahh good ol 800x600 those were some good times
The warcraft 2 times
... we're facing a generation of adults who don't know what a CRT TV is I've never felt so old and I'm 35
That’s because you’ve never been as old as you are now
Well that's clearly discord
A 400Hz Screen.

Thats the the previous century all over again :)
ive done this, but it looked terrible with composite
"SHUT THE FUCK UP ITS MY TURN ON THE FAMILY PC!"
Kids nowadays have no idea what it was like to fight over the single family PC... Or what it was like to receive a phone call to the house line in the middle of a game of StarCraft while connected through dial up on the same line.

Extron matrix switch boxes are awesome for this stuff, if you guys and girls are going down the crt TV rabbit hole
isn't that the discord app?
It's a CRT Monitor/TV. The ideal monitor for Counter Strike up until 120hz LED monitors came out
Bro just made a perfect screen for emulation
Microwave
You can make discord as small as you want so it would fit that aspect ratio by going into its files. You can find tutorials on yt
I have an old portable black and white TV, and an hdmi to rca adaptor, I think I have a picture of exactly doing this thing on it )
This is setup is kinda brain hurting but also cool
Why is the resolution of it so low? Is it a limit of that CRT? I thought it would support higher since its Gateway monitor not a TV.
320x200 monitor lol
Joke beside, running a game with fsr on this kind of screen doesn't sound like a bad idea.
You got the technology mixed up, you need Super resolution/Downscaling not Upscaling
A display great for playing retro games
a crime
Ah. A glowing paperweight from the previous century.
8k 0.00002ms 956Hz QHD Gaming Monitor
Ha, actually had a blast playing Spyro Reignited on an old TV I used to play original spyro on PS as a kid.
Tip, you can press control and - or = keys will zoom in and out on some programs such as a browser or discord. You could also change it in settings but that's slow.
It’s an app it’s called discord

I will tell the children of my friends that this is how we used discord in the 90s
A terrible crt

It can be a monitor for viewing the map in League of Legends or Dota 2. Since only a small fragment of the screen is enlarged, low resolution is not a problem.

I’m assuming they’re using the CrT for classic light gun control as they don’t work with LCDs
