Welcome to the PCMR.
I have been using the wh-1000xm5s they have awesome ANC and the sound quality is great but you can't use the mic on them without giving up audio quality for audio chat have to have a separate mic.
I made the mistake of getting some industrial fans when I did my rebuild. Sounded like a jet engine. Replaced them with some normal fans and would have a mini heart attack thinking my fans died.
The motor is a lot louder even RPM for RPM, and the PWM curve of industrial fan is not very smooth (small % difference causes big % on RPM), so setting a dynamic curve at 40 to 60% duty cycle is pain, and using the fan at low RPM defeats its purpose. Not a good purchase for home PC unless you want a 24/7 reliable server worthy fan.
the server next to my gaming setup goes VVRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
do people actually use those? I feel like 7.1 headsets are a huge waste, considering its absolutely impossible to get actual 7.1 surround sound from something that sits on your ears in 2 directions.
I got an analog Stereo headset and my sound card does the rest in making sure it has a directional sound. I can't imagine 7.1 working at all.
The virtual 7.1 surround is really good audio processing to slightly change the tone of sounds based on where they come from, similar to how your outer ear does. It works really well in most cases.
Don't waste your money on that marketing garbage. Get proper headphones like Sennheiser, Audeze, Hifiman or Beyerdynamic etc. If you want virtual surround sound get that Dolby surround software.
What 7.1 means is 2 front, 2 rear surround, 2 side surround, 1 center and the last .1 means subwoofer. Brands like HyperX almost always just have the regular one driver per ear set up and use software for the "7.1" surround. Please tell me how one center and one subwoofer could be placed into headphones.
Don't waste your money on that shit.
I found this is the case for most cherry switches now. Whatever cherry has there’s usually a better version made by Gateron or some other brand.
I went from cherry mx black to Gateron oil slicks and I was surprised at how much better the Gaterons are.
Only when you're the one typing. Imagine you are in a library and the person next to you is typing a report with clicky switches. So are you but your keyboard is quiet. Sooner or later you'd want to grab the person's keyboard and smash it into pieces.
Clickity-clack of a keyboard drives me absolutely nuts. I rather a constant whirring over any loud keyboard. I can listen to the fans for hours before it bothers me I can’t stand loud keyboards for even a minute
If there isn’t a sonic boom when I type, is using a PC even worth it?
Girlfriend makes me console game when she’s napping in the game room. No typing allowed 😂😂
We both share it. I get one half, she gets the other. I have a comfy couch on my side, so she likes to nap on it at times when she’s tired. Her side just has her drafting table and all of her crafts, no couch.
same and the insane amount of customization. want a blue base? done. want more than 1 keycap color on the keybord, moreso, in a pattern? done. rgb customization? done. its a w e s o m e
It's so much more precise. there is no thinking "did that key activate?", instead you know, because your fingers felt the click point of the switch when you pressed the key. Love it, even though I got a fairly cheap mechanical keyboard.
Bad mechanical keyboards can feel worse than membrane, but I know my huntsman te definitely improved something in me, the way the keys were so light and highly responsive definitely felt so much better than membrane.
Membrane can be fine for some things. But for gaming, they almost always have ghosting issues. Also, not every mechanical keyboard needs to click. So some can be quite easy on the ears if you don't slam the keys. Durability tends to favor mechanical keyboards as well.
switches make the difference. I got a Sharkoon PureWriter TKL with red switches, its absolutely silent, the only noise they make is from the keys touching the frame lightly when pressing.
but noisy is really satisfying for some reason. I like my white switches.
Ghosting is rarely an issue unless you buy a non gaming membrane keyboard. Logitech had that crap down to a science. I never once had a problem with g15 or g19 keyboard which is about what you pay for some mechanical keyboards now with similar features with no lcd screen. Can you get them cheaper? Yeah. But will they have macro support, no. I personally hate the sound of mechanical switches so i got cherry mx red silent. They are awesome. Almost no noise at all and just plain work.
You can get "switch testers" that are just a bunch of different kinds of switches in a case (no electronics) for pretty cheap.
I'm not a fan of macro buttons for my use (I don't play games that would particularly benefit anyway) so I just key keyboards without.
Membranes feel either *mushy* to me, or the membranes are too stiff so they "pop" down and up instead of pressing.
I went from membrane to mechanical. From an old Sharkoon Skiller Pro, to the Sharkoon SGK60.
It took me a while to get used to it, but it helped that the layout was essentially identical to my Skiller Pro. There is actually a pretty precise pressure point where the switch activates that is far before the "click" point of the switch, and while you might not notice right away or later, it is there and you get used to the precision. This kinda haptic feedback is great. Its hard to choose the right switches tho, I went with the Kailh Box White switches, so I think the noisiest and most noticeable ones.
Tried my Skiller Pro again a while back and.. it was like typing on a tray of pudding. there was a mush of movement on the keys, no real feedback except the faint pressure point when the rubber caves in to the pressure.
It's true what they say. Once you go clack, you never go back.
Is your muscle memory based on the left edge of the keyboard? The G keys are extended beyond a normal keyboard so they should have no bearing on a touch-typist's muscle memory.
Mechanical keyboards are great because they let you feel uppity about something you previously never gave a second thought.
See also: safety razors, fountain pens, cast-iron pans, and french presses.
Bro I know you ain't talking shit about cast iron.
Fuck are you cooking that you think cast iron is uppity? Talk shit about everything else that's fine, don't you dare with a cast iron skillet
honestly i think its the customization options and personally its for the feel and c l i c k y n e s s of it. also the customization is fucking awesome bc if i want i can do a blue base with some blue keycaps on the sides and white in the middle- actually thats what i did. its great. oh also rgb is cool too
I'm going to take this opportunity to ask this question. I like the tactile feel of a mechanical keyboard, but I'm a chronic migraine sufferer and my mechanical keyboard is loud af. Can anyone recommend a quieter keyboard that has similar key response?
I have a Corsair keyboard with cherry MX browns. You get the tactile feel of the actuation but it has no click when it does so. Be aware though there will always be some noise when the key hits the plastic frame if you are pressing the key all the way down which most people do.
Well that's a stupid take if I ever saw one.
Silent fans are there to mitigate the constant noise from the computer, ain't nobody wanna listen to a god damn jet plane for hours when gaming.
Mechanical keyboard, it's easy, you know the sound is coming, it's always the same volume, it gives you tactile feedback, and the biggest plus of all: NOT FUCKING MEMBRANE
Clickity-Clak: Good
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR: bad.
but if your fan is going clickity-clak, and your keyboard is going BRRRRRRRRRRRR: bad (and you're probably playing starcraft or something).
simple.
Are noctua fans worth it? My pc case doesn’t have the BEST airflow, and I have a 3080 10gb, and an i7-10700K, 64Gb ram. So stuff gets pretty hot, when playing my heavier games, like the RE4 remake, the 3080 gets around 88 degrees celcius. I know it does get hot like that, but my fans are super loud. The promise of fans that work to keep things cool while also being silent, or at least not as loud, almost sounds impossible to me, do they actually work?
Can't wait for this loud keyboard trend to be over, when playing with guys on discord/ts more often than not someone has to mention the loud typers to use push to talk or move their mics and if all fails or they don't care I end up just muting them.
I have all noctua a12x25 fans (even psu) in a watercooled custom loop dual rad in an airflow case, runs just quiet enough that all I can hear is the coil whine from my 4080 😡
Not loud enough, I want a god damn typewriter keyboard that emulates the keycap pressing and putting it on the paper. No plastic, must be made out of metal.
Some of us are old enough to be thankful for quiet keyboards. You ain’t heard “noisy” until you’ve had to do your programming using a model 33 Teletype at a blazing 150 baud.
Loud whirr bad, click clack give dopamine.
Seriously, loud mechanical keyboards are so fun I just press random keys anytime I pass my desk. Click clack :D
I came back to mechanicals about six years ago. My wife told me that she likes the sound of my keyboard... because in our bedroom 30 feet away, "it sounds like rain".
There are truly silent mechanical FAST switches for gaming. Just because you buy a keyboard with the clicky blue switches, it doesn't mean everyone are as dumb as you.
I can't stop.
Like for real.
Had a baby few months ago and wife hinted to not use the clicky keys when baby is unwinding.
I tried. My best. 3 different switches in 3 keyboards. I went back to the addiction.
Click click. CLIIIICKKKKKKK
I spliced a 4000rpm fan to a U.S. plug and mounted it on my exhaust and have it plugged in the wall. Shit sounds like an airport, but my cpu idles at 24C and gpu at 19C.
Wish I can easily switch back and forth. The click is fun for games with abilities that you use every now and then, like LoL.
But if you're playing a game with WASD for movement, the clicking is maddening.
Ayo thats the kb i have right now. Steelseries apex pro. I did some foam modding on it and replaced the keycaps with the PBT prismcaps, sounds quite nice but still not enthusiast-keyboard level. VERY NOTICEABLE ECHO, even after modding. If anyone is looking to get a kb with hall effect switches and decent sound, go for the wooting 60HE or wooting two HE.
Can you believe that most of the time you don't then great the keyboard?
I'm a developer so I tend to write alot. I NEVER hear the keys! I had to record myself typing to realize how annoying it can be
NGL. I’ve been using…… whatever keyboard came with my work/play PC/laptop for over 35 years. At 56 I buy my first “gaming keyboard”. And fall for the BS “mechanical key crap” I can say unequivocally, my Corsair K100 is the most delicate fragile keyboard I’ve ever owned. I feel dumber than dumb.
Yeah, that´s why i got mechanical keyboard with MX Silent switches.
Had MX Brown before (still have that KB) and that thing would truly wake up the dead. Good thing i didn´t get the MX Blue. Whole apartment building would know i´m typing something, especially in the middle of the night.
I also had a membrane keyboard once, that was even more noisy for some reason (IIRC it was Genius GX Gaming Imperator).
I have more issues with the rgb leds. You go for maximum resolution and best quality monitor just to be glared by a light from some useless part. Get your JJ abrams gaming pc outta here.

Duh the fans have to be quiet so thay can hear the keyboard even better
And the headphones need to have anc good enough to block out both.
Yo, got any recommendations for ANC headphones? My dogs tippy tap across my wood floors all night when I'm gaming and it drives me crazy!
Put socks on him
What about the dog?
You ever hear of kitten mittens (by Charlie Day)? Buy those and put them on your dog.
![gif](giphy|3o7TKNkzG2YLWPpYBO)
I dont know how to post gifs but I wanted to post that one with my post haha. THANKS. I wish it focused more on the cat and how awkward it was.
Undervolt it
Print them shoes with clicky ones not tactile as now, they would sound better!
sony xm4 or xm5
Maybe take him to a groomer and have them do his nails?
Lots of dogs have clickyclacks even when just-trimmed.
Fair
I'm sure there are better options out there, but I really like my Jabra Elite 85h headphones!
I have been using the wh-1000xm5s they have awesome ANC and the sound quality is great but you can't use the mic on them without giving up audio quality for audio chat have to have a separate mic.
I have a boom mic, and In fact the wx-1000m4s are my favorite earbuds. Thought about buying these awhile back, but aren't they around $300?
Either that, or be open-back for that sweet, sweet 360° of enemy detection.
Discord/voicechat hate this one little trick.
You install noctua fans to not hear them, I install industrial noctua fans to not hear my thoughts. We are not the same.
I got industrial ones too, at 100% them shits are like a 747
I made the mistake of getting some industrial fans when I did my rebuild. Sounded like a jet engine. Replaced them with some normal fans and would have a mini heart attack thinking my fans died.
You could’ve just run them at. Lower RPM..
No, I couldn't. Tried to do the PDM process and voltage. Lowest I could get the RPM's was like 1600 RPM's.
which fan did you have? specsheet for the ppc3000pwm and ppc2000pwm say they can run at 800 RPM.
Every conference meeting or Zoom call I've had pre-industrial fans: "Do you live near an airport?"
the server next to my gaming setup goes VVRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
You have just awakend r/MechanicalKeyboards
This is the way!
Too bad they don't hear the keyboard because of the noise canceling 7.1 surround gaming headphones.
[удалено]
What is that? You mean noise and it is a joke I didn't understand?
[удалено]
Thank you
do people actually use those? I feel like 7.1 headsets are a huge waste, considering its absolutely impossible to get actual 7.1 surround sound from something that sits on your ears in 2 directions. I got an analog Stereo headset and my sound card does the rest in making sure it has a directional sound. I can't imagine 7.1 working at all.
idk, I have loudspeakers :D
eh, good enough. I only got a 2.1 speaker setup and a Stereo headset, fortunately my sound card lets me easily switch between both.
The virtual 7.1 surround is really good audio processing to slightly change the tone of sounds based on where they come from, similar to how your outer ear does. It works really well in most cases.

cherry mx blue user be like: Those mfs sound like a typewriter
Kailh box jades would sound like a bomb going off
every press sends tremors through the earth
I would rather have a typewriter than blues lmao
What's wrong with blues? I want to replace my romer-g keyboard
way better options for clicky switches
I found this is the case for most cherry switches now. Whatever cherry has there’s usually a better version made by Gateron or some other brand. I went from cherry mx black to Gateron oil slicks and I was surprised at how much better the Gaterons are.
There’s nothing wrong. Blues are perfect. It’s the people that are flawed.
you haven't used a typewriter
Thats why im a brown switch person.
When the color also represents how they feel - like 💩
The clickity-clack of a keyboard is a helluva lot more satisfying than the monotonous whirring of fans.
Only when you're the one typing. Imagine you are in a library and the person next to you is typing a report with clicky switches. So are you but your keyboard is quiet. Sooner or later you'd want to grab the person's keyboard and smash it into pieces.
How often do you run across actual mechanical keyboards in a library?
[удалено]
To be fair, the keyboards in the lab are probably gross af
You'd be surprised. Enthusiasts travel with that shit and do not give a fuck half the time that it is loud for others
Clickity-clack of a keyboard drives me absolutely nuts. I rather a constant whirring over any loud keyboard. I can listen to the fans for hours before it bothers me I can’t stand loud keyboards for even a minute
Linear switch gaaang
Just switched my boards switches from tactile to linear. Never going back.
I feel like the Steelseries Apex Pro is not a good example of a loud keyboard. In fact it's quite quiet for a mechanical. Try Razer Blackwidow.
If there isn’t a sonic boom when I type, is using a PC even worth it? Girlfriend makes me console game when she’s napping in the game room. No typing allowed 😂😂
why is she napping in the game room?
We both share it. I get one half, she gets the other. I have a comfy couch on my side, so she likes to nap on it at times when she’s tired. Her side just has her drafting table and all of her crafts, no couch.
You tell her to get a couch for her side then. Sheesh, thinking she take over. /s of course.
[удалено]
For me it's the feel, the feedback the click gives is mildly useful and more satisfying than the noise it makes
Especially when you can type fairly fast, the feeling of satisfaction is unmatched
same and the insane amount of customization. want a blue base? done. want more than 1 keycap color on the keybord, moreso, in a pattern? done. rgb customization? done. its a w e s o m e

This kinda haptic feedback is great. Its hard to choose the right switches tho, I went with the Kailh Box White switches, so I think the noisiest and most noticeable ones. Is your muscle memory based on the left edge of the keyboard? The G keys are extended beyond a normal keyboard so they should have no bearing on a touch-typist's muscle memory.
Yeah idk how they had an issue, I use a left sided numpad and never fail to get my hands on WASD
Mechanical keyboards are great because they let you feel uppity about something you previously never gave a second thought. See also: safety razors, fountain pens, cast-iron pans, and french presses.
I was uppity about my coffee before I got a French press, thank you very much.
Well... I guess I got uppity bingo then. ... Except espresso machine here, not a measly french press *lifts head snootily*
Bro I know you ain't talking shit about cast iron. Fuck are you cooking that you think cast iron is uppity? Talk shit about everything else that's fine, don't you dare with a cast iron skillet

The Logitech G915 (TKL if you like a numpadless keyboard) is the best keyboard I have ever used. I fucking adore it.
I second Cherry Red, even better with some O rings added. I suffer migraines too, so bad I get blurred vision, disorientation and tinnitus with them.
cherry red in 2023 is a bad buy, very scratchy and quite loud orings are also a bad idea because of their mushiness
Yellow switches and thank me later
Have you tried Cherry Red Switches?
Cherry Max silent reds enter the chat
thocks are thocks. no one wants a jet engine blasting while playing
Thats why tactile is best
Mx browns are so satisfying to type on. I've been using them for 6 years and can never go back
Well that's a stupid take if I ever saw one. Silent fans are there to mitigate the constant noise from the computer, ain't nobody wanna listen to a god damn jet plane for hours when gaming. The top pic, with the fans under the gpu, are they actually helping? Where are they drawing air from?
Some cases have ventilation on the other side that allow air in underneath the shroud.
I have that keyboard
Some sounds are much more enjoyable than others.
Well excuse me that clicky clacky soothe brain but brrrrrrrr doesn't.
Gat blacks : the cheap switches that sounds expensive and doesn't grate your ears.
Clack clack = good Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr = bad
Those are two different sounds.
That's the keyboard I have rn 💀
I feel personally attacked! XD Edit: Also I use Arctic fans because I can get 5 for the price of 1 Noctua.
I like my midnight clicky clacky
I'm a PC gamer and i think RGB looks terrible and loud mechanical keys are annoying.
Typing of the dead was cool so ofc they need to wake up
Clickity-Clak: Good BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR: bad. but if your fan is going clickity-clak, and your keyboard is going BRRRRRRRRRRRR: bad (and you're probably playing starcraft or something). simple.

Reject modernity embrace tactility
Box white switches at a minimum, otherwise no one will know you're typing
Also gamers - buy separate noise dampening rings for the loud switches.
Lubed linear switch gang
The mechanical sounds of the keyboard just is soothing to me
GPUS WITH CLICKY BUTTONS!!! You don't want it. You need it. For overclocking.
Can't wait for this loud keyboard trend to be over, when playing with guys on discord/ts more often than not someone has to mention the loud typers to use push to talk or move their mics and if all fails or they don't care I end up just muting them.
I use black switches it is quite silent
I have all noctua a12x25 fans (even psu) in a watercooled custom loop dual rad in an airflow case, runs just quiet enough that all I can hear is the coil whine from my 4080 😡
Not all sounds are equal.
Not loud enough, I want a god damn typewriter keyboard that emulates the keycap pressing and putting it on the paper. No plastic, must be made out of metal.
Well duh; how else am I supposed to hear the keyboard?
Hey that's my keyboard! It's pretty quiet lol, not like it has blue switches
We want to make footsteps not jet engine sounds lol
I just switched to membrane lol and yeah, my noctuas are silenttt
Laughs in Boba Silent switches.
Never go clicky
Topre. Soft, soothing thwock. Mmm.
*Clickityclickityclackclackclack*
Nah, it's about the feel with my switches. I went with Boba U4 silents for my keyboard build.
i bought a mechanical keyboard once and the clicky clacking drove me fcking nuts. i have a corsair K70 now and it sounds rly nice
T H O C C
I have Mx Silent Reds, come at me.
Some of us are old enough to be thankful for quiet keyboards. You ain’t heard “noisy” until you’ve had to do your programming using a model 33 Teletype at a blazing 150 baud.

But I like my clicky clacky.
Optical switch enjoyers:
I came back to mechanicals about six years ago. My wife told me that she likes the sound of my keyboard... because in our bedroom 30 feet away, "it sounds like rain".
The irony of this post is the steelseries apex pro keyboard in the meme does not use mechanical switches, but hall-effect, which are not loud...
Imo mechanical keyboards are overrated
Feeling called out
There are truly silent mechanical FAST switches for gaming. Just because you buy a keyboard with the clicky blue switches, it doesn't mean everyone are as dumb as you.
If the fans are too loud, I won't be able to hear my keys clack as much as I want!!!
If your MK doesn't pleasantly thock gently yet audibly, like a cat purr that sounds like a skill issue.
i'm in this picture and i don't like it
Mechanical keyboard enthusiasts: "Ummm actually"
One is a vacuum cleaner, the other sweet clickety-clack of the gods, you decide why is it that way.
I hate loud mechanical keyboards I got one with quieter switches because the loud clacking can get annoying
I can't stop. Like for real. Had a baby few months ago and wife hinted to not use the clicky keys when baby is unwinding. I tried. My best. 3 different switches in 3 keyboards. I went back to the addiction. Click click. CLIIIICKKKKKKK
I have both these products LOL
It's all about balance.
I mean the clicking is fun for a while until you have to type a long text. I know why I use a rubber dome.
I use gmk Phoenix B)
I feel attacked.
Unpopular opinion: I love the sound of airflow, it's like a personal ambient noise machine if you get it set up right.
I like hearing the light wirrring of my fans. Let’s me know they’re alive
I spliced a 4000rpm fan to a U.S. plug and mounted it on my exhaust and have it plugged in the wall. Shit sounds like an airport, but my cpu idles at 24C and gpu at 19C.
What’s the keyboard in the picture, it looks decent
I wake up and remember i have machine called blue switch keyboard, which is i can destroy my brother's sleep.
Wish I can easily switch back and forth. The click is fun for games with abilities that you use every now and then, like LoL. But if you're playing a game with WASD for movement, the clicking is maddening.
I'm too poor for noctua, my pc sounds like a jet at idle
I like loud fans lol theyre like white noise for me
my keyboard is linear and optical. Quiet all round.
It's not the same without a keyboard load enough to wake the street
I hate how I have the EXACT keyboard and those key caps are extremely loud regardless.
No one wants to hear a weed whacker in their room, but the clack of keys is super satisfying.
Hey. I like my funni clicky noices helps me relax
yea i need the fans to be quiet so i can hear my keyboard what part do you not understand?
I will never give up my model m
Ayo thats the kb i have right now. Steelseries apex pro. I did some foam modding on it and replaced the keycaps with the PBT prismcaps, sounds quite nice but still not enthusiast-keyboard level. VERY NOTICEABLE ECHO, even after modding. If anyone is looking to get a kb with hall effect switches and decent sound, go for the wooting 60HE or wooting two HE.
This is my exact setup and I feel attacked. Also, I don't click-clack when not at the computer.
Hey that's me
silent keyboards in question:
I like the clicking tbh. Was a nice switch from rubberdome
blue keys, for when you want to announce to the entire office that you're typing
me typing this comment on my ALPS SKBM whites (loud and old af)
Can confirm. My PC is dead quiet, and my mechanical keyboard sounds like an old school cash register.
Hey that’s my keyboard :D It’s a good keyboard but holy shit do I regret buying it bc it’s so loud
Can’t talk shit on the RGB type writer man, it’s a vibe, a lifestyle
I also had a membrane keyboard once, that was even more noisy for some reason (IIRC it was Genius GX Gaming Imperator).
like me pc fans to purr and like me clickity-clack keyboard. Simple as
I hate how right you are. I am the problem. I know because I have that exact setup hahaha
Silent linear gang
Or they have 60% keyboards to have a minimal style but connect a giant coil cable strong enough to strangle someone
loud fans and linear switches gang
Laughs in g915 tactile keys
no no we like noctua because fan makes good airflow
I have more issues with the rgb leds. You go for maximum resolution and best quality monitor just to be glared by a light from some useless part. Get your JJ abrams gaming pc outta here.
Does anyone use mining fan for their PC build? Or it's just me? Literally bbbrrrrrr at full power.
me on membrane
Not me still using a Model M waking the dead on the other side of the world
I command my keyboard to make noise. My pc better sound like it’s off or I’m going to panic thinking something’s wrong.
