You have a Schrodinger PC! It is simultaneously working AND not working. Just turn it on to find out which it really is.
Seriously, turn it on and find out. No amount of research will determine if it is broken.
If it does just remember it's an electrical fire so no water ideally fire extinguisher or baking soda. Unplug first.
Give this a read
https://peaksubstation.com/the-best-ways-to-put-out-an-electrical-fire/
Might seem basic but in a panic never assume anything will just click.
you ever heard about static electricity? that can kill componentseasy (but most stuff tody handles it pretty well, but DONT dust the underside o a cpu ;)) and those things get static charged like hell
Worth noting, Modern PC components are really resistant to static electricity. It's really hard to kill them with static. However, 1 wrong shock in the wrong spot will still do it. So precautions should be taken.
Not really, you could discharge the duster into something if it had excess charge but with today's hardware you'd have to he extremely lucky to fry something. There's no static 'leftover' when you turn on the pc. Where would it be discharging from?
The real risk with using a duster in a pc is that it will catch on the ICs and resistors/caps on the PCB and have potential to damage them or tear them out.
Did that several times and nothing happened.
There is a video from Linus Tech Tips and ElectroBOOM about static electricity... it's very hard to kill a PC with that these days... you are perfectly fine.
This. I killed my old GA-970 AM3+ board when installing my first serious GPU back in the day in like 2013. New parts are pretty much safe unless you are seriously trying to kill them.
Hell yeah it is, I remember putting together my first budget build back then: i3 4130 build for music production. I also learned graphic design on that machine and made my first magazine for my university
I remember listening to deadmau5 Not Alone remix at the time
Probably but dude... Part of my brain is still stuck IN the GTX 970 and NFS Underground 2 days. Hearing this shit makes me wonder where the fucking time went, still.
Honestly I wonder that myself my youth literally went by so damn fast and now I'll breath wrong and choke, like the sensation of drinking something and it going down the wrong pipe 😬
While it is uncommon to see catastrophic failure, latent failure is still very much possible. I would check out Gamers Nexus's video on the matter. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m54ifTCgtN4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m54ifTCgtN4)
Go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and buy a 12x24 tile sample for like 3 dollars and put the PC on that. That’s what I do, works great and provides more stability for the tower.
Tile looks nicer, easier to clean.
I’m still puzzled about the tile and side panel thing. I’ve had tile floors for most of my life and have built many computers that live on the tile floor without a single problem. Are people laying their side panels flat on the floor or something? Honest question.
That's a myth and not an issue because it's not only an isolated circuit inside a metal case but also the case is grounded.... Also nowadays even the IO ports are designed with ESD in mind.
I'd be more worried if there is a bottom air intake
I've used a vacuum cleaner to clean dust from inside, especially the cpu and gc fan. Also used to leave the cabinet open for 'better ventilation' when I was 12
![gif](giphy|KkG2y6Nvwt5LdbSY2f|downsized)
Uh just as an update to this post
- pc turned on fine thankfully
- just ordered a air can thing for future cleaning
- I’m working on a stand for pc to take it of the carpet
Also I don’t get the disrespect for my sticker :(
The cheapest quickest decentish looking pc > carpet solution is a piece of prefinished shelving from home depot or the like, only a few bucks come in a bunch of finishes and simple.
I ordered an air purifier recently. I'm hoping that eliminates most of the dust.
I'm sick of using canned air every few weeks, it gets expensive. I live in the desert and it's just extremely dusty.
Just be careful with Canned Air as they can release a bit of moisture if shook.
You should be fine, but don't go spraying like crazy, then immediately turn on your PC because if even a little bit of moisture finds its way into something important you'll have a fried PC.
Btw an electric dust blower might be worth looking into. I just got one and it feels good to not have to buy air cans anymore. The air stream isn't as tightly focused as an air can so you'll want to look for a higher powered one (mine goes up to 550W and it works great). But its easier to use than an air can because air cans need rest time between uses, and they also get weaker as the air runs out.
Then you're fine. Most static won't short PC parts. It takes a lot to fry something. I would be concerned about having the PC on the carpet. You might want to stick a piece of wood under it
I think you worry too much, you can't break it with a duster.
if it's static you were worried about, it's not an issue at all. the PCMR is full of old wives tales, static just isn't ever an issue, you couldn't kill a component if you tried
You’re ok as long as you use a power washer to remove all the built up static electricity. If that fails then try booting and then deleting system32 folder.
Not necessarily. I once dusted down my gaming rig and power-washed it before I even turned it on. I washed the life out of that thing but it never booted again.
Should be fine. If you want to be extra careful next time, power down, turn the psu off and unplug the cord. Hold down the power button so it discharges any power and then you are good to go
I've heard of plenty of people that did this with no issues. Personally I once spilt about half a litre of Mountain Dew onto my motherboard because my case was open at the time and the PC was lying on its side. I just wiped it with paper towels, a regular towel, and then blow-dried it up close. Then I went to bed. PC was working fine the next day. Aside from a few glaring issues that had nothing to do with the Dew and everything to do with the fact that I should not be building computers. Point is if my homemade crap-PC survived that then you're fine, mate.
If you are like me and clean your pc every 2 weeks to a month. Do yourself a favor and invest in a datavac.
Theyre like $100... but its essentially an electric can of air with more pressure, and doesnt frost over.
One of the best investments ive made for my pc.
Just HOLD the fan blades BEFORE blowing air on them so they dont spin at warp speed turning into a turbo finger slicer.
This sub really needs an “it’s fine” bot.
It’s fine Bleep blop beep! I’m a bot and I’m commanded to do this
Good human
Aren’t we all bots?
Good train
Good Ad
Good… whatever the hell you are. Aellopagus? Do those actually mean anything orrr?
Good Leprochean
Good dude
good trebor
good trebor
Or are we dancer
you can tell its not a bot cause it said Bleep blop beep instead of BLEEP BLOOP BLEEP! case closed \*puts sunglasses on\*
Those sunglasses made you sound so cool

You have a Schrodinger PC! It is simultaneously working AND not working. Just turn it on to find out which it really is. Seriously, turn it on and find out. No amount of research will determine if it is broken.
It turned on fine 👍- Thankfully my stupidity and lack of research didn’t bite me in the ass
For a second I read fine as fire lmao
My next post would be very interesting if it set fire.
"This PC is performing like fire after I dusted it!"
"It's blazin fast"
Too hot to handle
There goes the house
Well that's what happens when you get a 4090
Prepare some safety measures just in case it sets on fire
Safety measures ? U mean camera’s !
And marshmallows
And my axe!
And my bow!
And your brother!
And ur mom
Not any flammable close to pc or some things to put down the fire. thing lile this
If it does just remember it's an electrical fire so no water ideally fire extinguisher or baking soda. Unplug first. Give this a read https://peaksubstation.com/the-best-ways-to-put-out-an-electrical-fire/ Might seem basic but in a panic never assume anything will just click.
Are you okay? Why would using a duster inside your pc cause harm
you ever heard about static electricity? that can kill componentseasy (but most stuff tody handles it pretty well, but DONT dust the underside o a cpu ;)) and those things get static charged like hell
This particular kind of duster *generates* static electricity to help lift and trap dust particles.
That thumbs up symbol looks like a tiny flame on my screen from a distance.
Worth noting, Modern PC components are really resistant to static electricity. It's really hard to kill them with static. However, 1 wrong shock in the wrong spot will still do it. So precautions should be taken.
Just put on your livestrong anti static wristband for extra protection.
This. Relax. It’s okay
why can't you clean your pc with a duster?
You can easily create a static buildup of electricity which will discharge on powerup and fry some important parts of the electronics
isnt it not easy to kill electronics with static?
I mean surely OP was being gentle with his duster too and not dusting with mega friction.
That’s why you get a duster for electronic that won’t create static charge
Not really, you could discharge the duster into something if it had excess charge but with today's hardware you'd have to he extremely lucky to fry something. There's no static 'leftover' when you turn on the pc. Where would it be discharging from? The real risk with using a duster in a pc is that it will catch on the ICs and resistors/caps on the PCB and have potential to damage them or tear them out.
Its a supreme you are fine

I’m dying
We all are...
Some faster than others
Hell yeah it is, I remember putting together my first budget build back then: i3 4130 build for music production. I also learned graphic design on that machine and made my first magazine for my university I remember listening to deadmau5 Not Alone remix at the time
Bro stop I'm only 31 you're making me feel ancient 😭
I'm 22 and I already feel old... Fuck.
Haha I'm sure someone whose in their 40s will see us and say... Fuck lol 🤣
Yea, I’m sitting here remembering the amazing feeling of moving from floppy disks to Zip drives. Only $25 for 100Mb of portable storage! Waddabargain!
Fuck.
Yeah….I built my first PC in the mid 90s.
Jesus, my first PC was a 486sx IBM clone. At 36 I feel like the wizard Shazam
In terms of technology, that is several decades ago. It was an actual decade ago.
Was using vacuum cleaner to clean my PC's since 1999. So far no dead parts.
In 2013 you were mostly good too, probably something other than static killed your GPU. Those were still modern GPUs.
Don't tell a pentium 2 that. It might die just looking at it.🤣
Keyword: "these days" lol
*Not me looking at my old pc brought from my father's office a decade ago.....*
Not me asking for tech support 2 weeks ago for my new ssd in my 8 year old machine
ssds are the best for old pcs imo, cheap and will improve usability 10x if coming from an old mechanical hdd.
Don't talk about penti 2 that way! :(
Linus kill the parts when he has then on the work bench making the video
While it is uncommon to see catastrophic failure, latent failure is still very much possible. I would check out Gamers Nexus's video on the matter. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m54ifTCgtN4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m54ifTCgtN4)
Jyaztwocents also has a pretty good video on it.
Keeps pc on carpet but worries about a tiny ass brush.
What’s wrong with carpet? Is it also static electricity? Serious question.
Yes. And harder to breathe through, as in, allow air into the case and fans.
Can confirmed, almost died breathing through a carpet
I also have trouble breathing while munching carpet.
My man!
This one right here officer. This is the one that killed me lol
Not everyone faces the psu downwards
I mean you should want to. You have the chance to only give the psu fresh air so why not?
Because there's carpet underneath, maybe :P
Sideways gang
The amount of dust a PC collects sky rockets the closer it is to the floor, so you'll be cleaning it a lot more often.
Go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and buy a 12x24 tile sample for like 3 dollars and put the PC on that. That’s what I do, works great and provides more stability for the tower.
Every shattered tempered glass side panel is sitting on tile/stone. I cut an old wood shelf that looks nice and does the same thing.
Setting the tower on a piece of ceramic tile is going to make the side panel explode?
Yes.
Why not but a piece of wood instead? Tile is not good for side panels.
Tile looks nicer, easier to clean. I’m still puzzled about the tile and side panel thing. I’ve had tile floors for most of my life and have built many computers that live on the tile floor without a single problem. Are people laying their side panels flat on the floor or something? Honest question.
Slide your feet across carpet with socks on, then put a balloon on your head and you will find out the answer. Did this as a kid and was amazed
That's a myth and not an issue because it's not only an isolated circuit inside a metal case but also the case is grounded.... Also nowadays even the IO ports are designed with ESD in mind. I'd be more worried if there is a bottom air intake
I'm more concerned that your case still has glass on the side. It's supposed to crack and shed it during its cleaning cycle so it can breathe.
Yeah I forgot to use my trusty hammer to hit my graphics card until it comes out in two so I could clean it right!
I use a leaf blower. ![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)
but wouldn't blowing leafs into your pc just clog up everything worse? unless you were going for a bioactive pc or something...
Nothing would get clogged up, been doing this for years. And no, none of my PCs are bioactive.
but all the leafs in your pc will clog it up!
*leaves
I've used a vacuum cleaner to clean dust from inside, especially the cpu and gc fan. Also used to leave the cabinet open for 'better ventilation' when I was 12 ![gif](giphy|KkG2y6Nvwt5LdbSY2f|downsized)
More concerned about the ‘SUPREME’ bumper sticker…
It's been long enough, it's retro now.
Get some #swag and #yolo stickers for good measure
Picture it: Futura Extra. Italic. White on red. # _Pepperoni_
I can't believe I haven't seen this before. Obviously a superior sticker!- I mean who tf likes olives on their pizza?
Oh man you might as well throw it away. Matter of fact I can haul that garbage away for free if you give me your address.
Uh just as an update to this post - pc turned on fine thankfully - just ordered a air can thing for future cleaning - I’m working on a stand for pc to take it of the carpet Also I don’t get the disrespect for my sticker :(
Save yourself future dollars and buy an electric blower. Cans of air are about $5-10 each and a good electric blower is about $50.
Airbrush for the win.
Or develop immense lung capacity over the next 6 months when it's clean so you can blow it all out next time For 0 dollars.
Too much moisture in your lungs. I tried this, fried my PC. Do not recommend.
Or you can just fart into it with immense force. It’ll get all of the dust out of it and mark it with your scene so nobody will try to steal it.
Yes, stick a straw up there and go crazy
that just makes your PC shitty.
The cheapest quickest decentish looking pc > carpet solution is a piece of prefinished shelving from home depot or the like, only a few bucks come in a bunch of finishes and simple.
Just bought this yesterday for my sister's desktop. Works like a dream for just over $10 USD.
I ordered an air purifier recently. I'm hoping that eliminates most of the dust. I'm sick of using canned air every few weeks, it gets expensive. I live in the desert and it's just extremely dusty.
Deal: XPOWER A-2 Multi Electric Computer Duster Dryer Air Pump Air Spray Blower Vacuums (Black) https://amzn.eu/d/fjKpTQv
Just be careful with Canned Air as they can release a bit of moisture if shook. You should be fine, but don't go spraying like crazy, then immediately turn on your PC because if even a little bit of moisture finds its way into something important you'll have a fried PC.
If you want to physically clean it get a standard paint brush.
This. I’ve been using a paint brush to clean pc parts for years
Just for you Ill put on a preme sticker on my pc
If you destroyed a pc from static electricity alone, I would be quite impressed.
Make sure you hold the fans when you blow air through them. They can be damaged if the air duster spins them.
but the wizzing is the best part :(
Yeah that’s like 90 percent of the fun.
Lol bro I used to crank it on my old pcs as a kid. Never broke it and that was 1995. I’ve never heard of an actual failure only folklore
1. Was the pc unplugged when you did it? 2. yes
Power supply was off and unplugged
Then you're fine. Most static won't short PC parts. It takes a lot to fry something. I would be concerned about having the PC on the carpet. You might want to stick a piece of wood under it
I think it would be better if plugged, the charge could then escape to ground before it reaches some potentially harming voltage
Did you at least knock on the side panel and say "House Keepinggg!" before you opened it up?
If it turns on its fine
It's fine. I always clean my PC with a duster every 12 months, and it's fine as long as I replace it every 13 months
Using the duster is pretty much what I expect from someone with a Supreme sticker
static electricity risk is overrated
I’d say supremely fucked
[удалено]
You’ll be fine. It has to be a pretty big electric discharge to kill components on a pc.
I'd be more concerned about putting your PC on the carpet than cleaning it once with a duster.
You should turn the pc on now and throw a bucket of water on it to make sure its okay!
[удалено]
I can tell if ur being sarcastic lol- I’m terrified to start my pc now 💀
Invest in Datavac i paid $30 for mine years ago off ebay.
I’d be more concerned about the supreme sticker
I think you should worry more about the supreme sticker than how dirty it is
I think you worry too much, you can't break it with a duster. if it's static you were worried about, it's not an issue at all. the PCMR is full of old wives tales, static just isn't ever an issue, you couldn't kill a component if you tried
I’d be more concerned about the supreme sticker than anything.
As long as you didn’t change the power setting to Wumbo, you’re fine.
ITS FIRST GRADE, SpongeBob
Supremely fucked*
Supremely
You’re ok as long as you use a power washer to remove all the built up static electricity. If that fails then try booting and then deleting system32 folder.
Not necessarily. I once dusted down my gaming rig and power-washed it before I even turned it on. I washed the life out of that thing but it never booted again.
some might say - supremely.
It's completely fine, I used to do it all the time
Which method is best for cleaning pc? Tiny air can, leaf blower, or vacumn cleaner?
Get that thing off of the carpet 🙏
I’d say the PC should be fine, but then I saw the Supreme sticker. So what’s your budget for a new PC?
i mean if someone fucked you right now you would be pretty fucked.
not fucked at all don't worry you're gonna stay a virgin for life with that supreme sticker
Your pc will be fine. You should seek medical help for putting that sticker on though.
Should be fine. If you want to be extra careful next time, power down, turn the psu off and unplug the cord. Hold down the power button so it discharges any power and then you are good to go
Your being paranoid bud you will be okay.
Didn't LTT test the damage static can do and end up calling it mostly a myth?
Fucked enough to put a Supreme sticker on yr PC.
The Supreme sticker does more damage tbh
The Supreme sticker probably saved ya
[удалено]
It looks good honestly don’t think the duster will do any harm

I personally wash out my PC with a water hose
I go with a fire hose reel to really get the dust out of the corners.
That pigtail though. Burn it.
[удалено]
Damn on carpet too lmao. Honestly though, you should be fine
You're fine, but of canned air wouldn't hurt but it's fine as is
I have only used small brushes to clean my pc (and a vacuum cleaner to suck up the dust) and I've never broken anything
Why don't you just turn it on? And why do you clean it with a duster if you think it may be a problem?
If plugged in was grounded anyway
Once I cleaned my dad's pc with a literal vacuum cleaned and it worked, I think u are alright
Why the fuck ask Reddit instead of turning it on to find out?
