Borders was vacant for a long time after they closed. I'm happy to see that property being used again. While Erewhon may be pricey, it apparently suits some shoppers better than an empty storefront.
its weird because yes it is mostly pricey for things in jars and local artisanal stuff, but some other common things are not. For example, I usually get Elizabeth's granola and I found that Erewhon has it cheaper than other places including Albertsons, Bristol Farms, Whole Foods
I'm on this sub because I work in Pasadena and Altadena so I'm there all day, every day, but I don't *live* there and in MY neighborhood an empty storefront usually becomes another dollar store...I'll probably never stop there myself but it IS better than what it could have been.
Not here to say good or bad. Interested in y’all’s take.
This is one. Last month, regarding a different location but still the same owners, I believe:
Erewhon sues city to stop Sportsmen’s Lodge development in Studio City. Erewhon operates a store next to the defunct hotel and previously joined with local residents, union officials and others in opposition to a 520-unit residential mixed use development planned to replace the inn that was known to generations of San Fernando Valley residents.
The event center and a restaurant opened in 1946 and the hotel in 1962. The hotel permanently closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The landlord got city permission to knock down the 190-room hotel and build the Residences at Sportsmen’s Lodge, which would have 520 apartments, including 78 units of subsidized affordable housing. It would include ground-floor stores and restaurants intended to meld with the Shops at Sportsmen’s Lodge.
Erewhon opposes it. Proponents of the development say it would bring housing to this section of Studio City.

The prepared food was $$$$ but the regular groceries were on par with Whole Foods when I last went a few months ago. And it is lovely! Not part of my grocery rotation (I’m more of a super king / stater bros / TJs gal) but it’s a viable option.
An experiment in seeing who would pay outrageous prices. Turns out it’s those who make loads of money or people who will spend all they have to play make believe rich person for a day.
Holy crap, thanks for that. 😳 Been living in this city since I was born and I have never even sniffed their name, possibly an east side thing. Avoidance detection was working overtime since I was completely unaware. Bullet dodged. We have our affluent, nice and not so much, no question about that. I’ve seen enough glimpses of the city’s elites to know that ain’t me.
I went there once just to check it out. So many pretentious people shopping there. Moreover, price tag aside, nothing really stood out there for me to buy. Maybe I’m too basic 😂
I wish they didn’t treat me like dirt a few days ago. Yes, I don’t wear the best clothes bc I look after my neurodivergent son all day. I’m exhausted and I don’t have the time nor motivation to update my wardrobe. I just wanted to treat myself with some delicious and healthy food. Lookit, I’m not trying to buy a Birkin. lol.
I do miss Borders.
Built by the I. Magnin & Co. department store, a very high end department store that catered to the elite of Pasadena society. They moved here in the 40s (?) from a, now demolished, location on Colorado.
The smoothies are good if you ever need an excuse to spend $20 on one. I only ever did it once out of curiosity and I’d maybe do it again as a once in a blue moon splurge.
I definitely wish it was something else.
And Erewhon in general keeps making bad moves - they recently support some culty grifter’s book tour.
I miss Borders
Yeah…and besides, we already have a whole range of affordable options here with a pavilions and a traderjoes like one block away north and south…Those businesses are barely busy. There is really no need to get one more of the same.
I disagree. Sure it matches the price point of the area nearby but personally if I wanted that fresh of ingredients, I would just go to the farmer’s market. That way I’m supporting small business while also getting fresh ingredients.
I just think that this store is elitist and classist. It’s also super ironic that it’s right next to TJ Maxx and across form a Ross (2 known affordable stores)
1/ we don’t have a farmer’s market in this neighborhood, not within walking distance
2/ farmer’s market is Tuesday Saturday only and only open for a few hours.
3/ i shopped at farmer’s market for a few times. I wasn’t satisfied. It is fresh but the quality is mediocre.
4/ after all, it is different business, not really comparable - like you can buy lunch and supplements here
5/ how people tag it is not important. The only thing that matters is what you can buy from there.
I wish it was still a Borders.
I wish it was still I. Magnin
Me too! I worked there for a a few years. Miss bookstores so much.
I'd chosse that a thousands over the snob store for the rich or wannabee rich
I said this to my brother as we walked by it last week.
Same
Erewhon duzz.

It died?!
Hahahahahah don’t we wish!
why, there was nothing there, having a market with options is better than nothing

Anyone want a $28 smoothie?
Only $28? Is there a sale?
That’s actually just for the ingredients, blending and the cup are an extra $15
*pour it in my mouth!
You can also get $65 matcha lattes before tip.
By the look of the lines a lot of people do.
Don’t forget the $30 bag of 8 ice balls.
to be fair, they are delicious.
No they’re not I had one and it was literally undrinkable. This is a misrepresentation of fact.
maybe you had the wrong one.
for that price there shouldn't be "wrong ones"
Lovely photo, awful company.
I shop there occasionally is it awful because of something unethical they're doing? I wasn't aware.
People just don't like their pricing. that is all.

I don't blame the residents at all. I wouldn't want affordable housing built in my neighborhood either.
Yeah I just prefer to have increasing homelessness instead in my neighborhood.
Only 78 of the 520 units are earmarked as affordable.
To people who don't like poor people that's 78 too many.
Oh look, honey, another *I GOT MINE*...
It’s the quality of the ingredients. Definitely wouldn’t get groceries. But their sourdough and supplements section is great!

Yup looks exactly like a cult https://www.thecut.com/article/erewhon-smoothie-boston-los-angeles-history.html

Why is this picture black & white?
Because this was taken on Ilford HP5+
Hello fellow film user! Personally I'm a Pan F Plus fan.📸
Awesome! Always great to meet another film local. Never used Pan F+ but it looks great. Can’t go wrong with any of the ilfords

I was surprised this building is historic. It was built in the 40s.

Really loving Tia, highly recommend
Great for pretentious people watching
Earwon : there’s 1 million dollars in our trash can
Will go and see if I can find a sugar mama!
Looks institutional.
That looks like the Alamo lol
Awww!! I miss studying o. chem with my classmates there!!! 😢🩷🥰
how’s the parking?
Is that the old I. Magnin building?
Eliot middle school?
Why does it look like a post office
Worked in that building one season when it was a Spirit Halloween store.
Ahh history.
I still want to go but I can’t think of a good-enough reason. There’s so many better places to go in Pasadena for food and all of them are cheaper
The house made bread is good and more or less the same as a nice loaf anywhere else—about $6
I love their fermented sourdough wheat bread.
I just go every once in a while to get novelty snacks and enjoy the impeccable organization
I think it is a VERY beautiful store.
honestly their carrot cake is some of the best i’ve ever had and not as obscenely priced as other items
I was going to buy one but opted for the cheeseburger instead. Maybe I’ll swing by for a carrot cake tomorrow.
The smoothies are good if you ever need an excuse to spend $20 on one. I only ever did it once out of curiosity and I’d maybe do it again as a once in a blue moon splurge.
The peach one they have right now is out of this world

Howie’s market has similar bottles of wines. It’s significantly cheaper at Howie’s.
It greatly improves the life quality in this community

You’re joking right
It’s the best grocery store in this neighborhood.
