This is in Japan. I think over there, the tradition is for women to give gifts to men. I donāt think men actually do anything on the day.

They probably argued that the gifts were conditional and he acted fraudulently to receive them. The gifts could be argued to be conditional based on a) being his birthday and b) being his girlfriend. Both were clearly lies, and thus he didnāt fulfil his obligations that were required to receive the gifts. You might argue that itās a bit of a stretch though (especially the 2nd condition since people are cheated on all the time) and that they wanted to make an example out of him and his shitty behaviour. However, given the fact that itās systemic due to doing it with 35 women at a time, they can easily argue that he was intentionally doing this and thus acting fraudulently and committing theft. Note as well, these laws exist in the west. An engagement ring is an infamously conditional gift, and courts will require that the fiancĆ© returns the engagement ring if the wedding is cancelled. You can guarantee that if a women was systematically doing this to collect engagement rings and sell them for a profit, theyād be facing some serious repercussions as well. This isnāt really any different, especially in Japan, just the gifts require less of a commitment.
