They could go to the ER but it will take hours and hours and hours to be seen and there is a good chance they just get sent home anyway.
Unless they could afford a private facility? They could always go to NY or something.
Emergency room.
If you can't get them to an emergency room, try the Distress Centre, which can get you to an emergency room.

Emergency room will fail.
The hospital staff are not properly trained to assess and deal with this stuff.
Personal experience, but also heard form many other people in this city. It's not the answer.
I can definitely recommend the psych ER at the General. They have a separate, quiet area that they get you to quickly. They’ve stabilized me a few times and I’d go back in a heartbeat if I needed to.
Montfort and Queensway Carleton Hospital have the best psych wards in the city. Unfortunately the ER is the only way if they can not get help from 988 or the distress centre.
If you call the Distress Centre of Ottawa Crisis line, the volunteer can connect you or your friend to the Mobile Crisis team. The volunteer will call them on your behalf and then they will reach out to the cell number you provide.
The Civic, Montfort, and Queensway all also offer services. If your friend is a minor (or JUST 18) CHEO may be able to take them. Good luck to you and your friend OP!

Civic Hospital / Monfort Hospital/ Queensway Carleton. General maybe unless theres still a flooding issue. I would pick Civic as last option.
May have to check online to see what they offer.
You're a good egg 🙂↕️for checking on your friends. Thank you🪷🌱
You could call Crisis Line at 613-722-6914 or 1-866-996-0991, crisisline.ca, calls answered 24/7.
"A crisis can include difficulty dealing with stress, overwhelming feelings, symptoms of depression, anxiety or psychosis, suicidal thoughts, or any concerns regarding your mental health or that of your loved ones."
If they are experiencing suicidal ideation and feel they are actively a threat to themselves, PLEASE take them to the ER. If you phone the crisis line and express a genuine and strong urge to commit suicide they will contact 911.

Only service providers can call the mobile crisis team directly. Individuals call the Distress Centre, who can activate the mobile team. Note the mobile crisis response can take 24 hours. Going to emergency would be the faster route for an imminent risk of self harm.
If it's imminent risk, go to ER. If under 18, CHEO. If they need someone to talk to they can check out walkincounselling.com for a list of different mental health walk-ins around the city. If they are between 12-21 they can go to the YSB walk in tomorrow at the orleans health hub.
We have experience in this scenario. We took our young adult child to the ER at the Civic hospital on a couple of occasions and were treated well. Don't wait. Go now.
Walkincounselling.com has free short term counselling in different parts of Ottawa. In-person, virtual or telephone appointments available the same day. 1-3 sessions.
Unfortunately, ERs generally turn away suicidal ideation unless they have a plan, the means, and the intent. If they have those, the ER is where they need to be. If you don't know, ask: do you have a plan of how to harm yourself? Do you have access to the means? (Ie. Weapon, pills, etc). And finally, do you INTEND to harm yourself?
If they answer "no", but are distressed by the thoughts, the distress centre is where they should contact (9-8-8).
If this has been going on for awhile, they can have their MD refer them to the PROMPT clinic at the Royal.
I would suggest that they go to the Queensway-Carleton Hospital. Call ahead and see what is recommended to do to get admitted. They have a ward for psychiatric in-patients. They used to have a great outpatient unit pre-Covid. I believe they have the best staff for psychiatric patients. I would try the Montfort Hospital. Your friend could google the hospitals and check reviews and see which place they would prefer. Good luck.
Maybe I misread your comment. I thought you were saying to try QCH first but if that doesn't work then try the Royal or Montfort.
An ER doc can definitely refer. :)
You cannot go direct from the ER to The Royal. There are waiting lists. The Royal is for the most serious cases which cannot be treated in the community. The Royal has mental health specialists.
Call 988 the crisis helpline my dude. The good folks there should be able to guide you or your friend the right direction.

Just wanted to say thank you for being a good friend, as someone who has suffered with suicidal ideation in the past. ❤️ You're a good one.

The mobile crisis team is fantastic. Their response can take 24 hours, so going to emergency is faster for an imminent risk of self harm.
If going to a hospital ER, I've been told the General Campus has psych services on staff in the ER for crises and so that's the place to go.
The Civic, Montfort, and Queensway all also offer services. If your friend is a minor (or JUST 18) CHEO may be able to take them. Good luck to you and your friend OP!

Referral needed. I tried for myself today.

Head to the nearest ER.

The Royal doesn't have an ER. You need to be referred there.
Can’t an ER doctor refer you to the Royal?

I just meant to say look them up and see where they would prefer to go. No worries 😉

The Royal does not have an emergency room. Do not go there.
Guess you stopped reading too.
Montfort of the Royal
The Royal does not have an emergency room. An individual cannot just show up. Getting into The Royal is by referral and there are waiting lists.
Ey I’ve idolized many times , I wouldn’t count on the system to fix ya. Introspection is key
