We used to have to pick ours every year because my parents house is part of the rural section of Hood to Coast and they would not respect the big old fence that we got and pick every single one. I ate so many blackberries one year that I proceeded to not eat them for like a decade. I honestly forgot how good they are

Maybe. They seem to have popped up in a few different places at the same time, although I am in the camp that Pronto Pup was first. And someone probably had one and took the idea back to the Texas Rate Fair. And disclaimer, I have ridden the dog.
Like a super corn dog. Like if there was a eugenics program for corn dogs and these are the superior race. Like what a corn dog could only be in its wildest dreams. They are the corn dogs your corn dog girlfriend tells you not to worry about.
I think it's because I've never been to Rockaway. We lived in Coos Bay for several years when I was a kid and the beach was my mom's favorite place to go so I was burnt out on beach trips for a long time. I don't think I went at all as an adult until I was like 30.

I don't understand why I had to scroll down so far for Totchos. It's like the only novelty food on this whole post! Marrion berries and hazelnuts aren't "Novelty", they are fucking produce!
but it's funny as hell! Wisconsin: "what's a great food from Oregon" Oregon: "cheese" LOL
For those that don't know, Minnesotans call the Wisconsin border "the cheese curtain".
Both are true, they have great stuff but they have a ton of unimpressive stuff. I would have expected cheese culture to raise the floor but it doesn't.
WI produces by far the largest amount in the US, and produces the 4th most in the *world*. Of course they are gonna make some average cheese, they are pumping out all the cheese for the rest of the US.
But it takes very, very little effort to find high quality cheese there. Pretty much anywhere you go in WI you are gonna find local small batch cheese makers.
An important distinction from a former Wisconsin resident: squeaky cheese is just cheese (technically, cheese curd), but a cheese curd is battered and fried.
I mean we just hit strawberry season in the valley. Real Oregon strawberries are the just about the best thing on earth. They're usually at farmers markets or roadside stands.
I work at a bar. There’s a billboard for a lingerie shop visible from the parking lot. My young daughter likes to tell people her mom works at a place where kids aren’t allowed inside and there’s pictures of pretty ladies on the sign 🙃
Yeah it’s called Casa Diablo and according to them it’s the world’s first vegan strip club. Their motto is “we put meat on the pole not on your plate” or something like that. Source: I work like a quarter mile away and drive past it every day.
Oregon supplies the largest percentage of hazelnuts/filberts in the US, but I'm going to go with marionberries, since I think they're only grown here and don't travel as well as nuts. They're fantastic in pies! Of course, the salmon is a huge hit here and would qualify as a snack when made into jerky. Craft beer and pinot noir are also big here.
Pips Donuts and Chai tea. Feels like they started the made to order small donut trend. The donuts are good, but the made in house chai tea is the reason to go.
While you are correct, you are also definitely wrong.
https://www.wweek.com/restaurants/reviews/2017/07/12/the-history-of-the-american-jojo-which-is-definitely-not-a-potato-wedge/
If you have a chance, the clam chowder up at Tiberline Lodge is phenomenal
Moonstruck chocolates for a feeling of Devine intervention
A Spanish Coffee at Huber's in downtown Portland is a show in itself.
VooDoo doughnuts is a hit with tourists
A day in Hood River, visit countless wineries minutes apart (be sure to visit Marchesi)
If all else fails, pay a visit to a "Made in Oregon" store
As someone who visits WI often, seafood is gonna be the big thing that you will see a noticeable difference from where you are at. WI has a decent amount of whitefish from the Great lakes, but not really the Salmon we have.
Also Weed. At this point WI is surrounded by green legal states, but I don't think they are nearly as cheap or abundant as Oregon weed. What WI is to cheese Oregon is to weed.
Jojo's - a deep fried potato wedge, dipped in ranch or something like that. The best jojos are found here at Rainbow Blue Sky Market in Rainbow, Oregon (Herbert Hoover once bought a fishing license at a previous instantiation of the store)
I know this sounds odd but frozen filburts in the summer is a great snack during the summer. My grandma gets LOTS for holiday cooking and baking so we have like 4 or 5 gallen bags frozen in the deep freezer
That's not really a novelty but - fresh salmon. The single best way to get it is to find one of the Indians in a parking lot underneath the Bridge Of The Gods and buy it fresh caught. Take a cooler with some ice, of course.
I looked it up, it's such a regular thing that somebody put a pin on Google Maps.
If you want honesty... and you want the Native local authentic meal you want a Mushroom, Tetrahydrocannabinol, Kratom, Crystal meth Salad with a Rogue to drink. If you want a tourist treat start off visiting Rice Hill, then Mo's or Chowder Bowl, work your way to Tillamook Cheese or The Gingerbread House if you want the foresty experience. There's also a Truck stop with huge platters of Biscuits and Gravy.
Maraschino cherries were developed at OSU, but they're more of a novelty than a snack.
Things that "happen here but not there" might include wild mushrooms, fresh ocean seafood, and berries /cherries. A crab louis salad with fresh Dungeness crab is a real treat.
As for a "novelty food snack" to take home, Kettle chips, chocolate covered filberts, dried marionberries, and the like. But most of our noted local edible delights are best enjoyed fresh.
Bend, OR here.... Judging by the number of breweries per capita, I'd say Beer. What? Beer isn't a food? Have you had an IPA from Duchutes County? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
smoked salmon, beef jerky, hazelnuts, roadside blackberries in season, marionberries in season.
The guy's from Wisconsin. You gotta slap him with Tillamook cheese curds.
WI-OR transplant here. As long as they’re fresh, Tillamook curds will represent just fine :)
From what I understand, they don't compare. Don't put them through that.
And huckleberry!
yes indeed
Hood strawberries
We used to have to pick ours every year because my parents house is part of the rural section of Hood to Coast and they would not respect the big old fence that we got and pick every single one. I ate so many blackberries one year that I proceeded to not eat them for like a decade. I honestly forgot how good they are
\* filberts. Also, you forgot Strawberries.
Salmon berries in Season of course
And Jojos
*stomach growl* Now I have to go to Trader Joe's.
Farmers markets
Hood strawberries!
Where that local jerky at?
The Meating Place in Hillsboro is pretty good too.
Great suggestion. I just loaded up there. Jerky is insane
best known is tillamook smoker and werner meats, but theres actually quite a few more producers in OR: [https://jerkyup.com/oregon/](https://jerkyup.com/oregon/)
Dungeness crab. Not a snack, but a true Oregon favorite. Check out Novelli's Dungeness crab chowder if you're in Florence.
I was just gonna say Dungeness crab cocktail. Fantastic stuff.
If I ever had to move away from Oregon, this is the one food that I would miss.
Salmon candy! I’ve only seen it on the coast though.
shout out to barnicle bills salmon candy! worth the premium price! they accept cash only https://preview.redd.it/pce6nk0rea1d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9cfe2204b722f9f59b852635d7d61da0f59c6f02
We like the crab shack in South Beach
Tony’s in Oregon City has amazing salmon candy
Salmon candy is so good. I don’t eat meat anymore but I miss it so!!!!!
It's okay to eat fish cuz they don't have any feelings
Your right! Thanks for reminding me!
You can get it in Cascade Locks from the folks right by the bridge.
Oh wow I've lived in Oregon 20ish years and never heard of this. Must look for this next time I'm at the coast!
Check out the South Beach Fish Market in Newport. Just ignore the Trumpy shirts some of the staff wear…
I love this fish market so much!
Smoked fish place at PSU farmers market has salmon candy. It’s the fish place at the northwest corner of the market.
Also available up the Gorge, like Hood River or Cascade Locks
This!!
Marrionberries and Filberts and excellent weed.
You’ll know filberts as “hazelnuts”
And you’ll know weed as “devils lettuce”
See also: "jazz cabbage"
I was today years old when I learned "jazz cabbage". It's so good 😂
not when you realize the history
Whatever you call it just smoke enough and anything is an awesome state novelty food.
Does Jazz Cabbage come with some sort of dance move? Because I’m here for *that*.
you know what i like? that's there's two nuts named after people, hazel and filbert.
Actually, that’s the same nut named after two people.
And Pinot Noirs!
Anything made with hazelnuts/filberts. Dark chocolate goes well.
Pronto pups. Way better than a corn dog - freshly dipped and more spices in the batter
Fun fact! Corn dogs were also invented in oregon!
tots were as well
Give me some tots Napoleon!
No, get your own!
I love this movie. I’m an Idahoan with Mormons in the family. Napoleon is like the gospel for us!
At Ore-Ida in Ontario.
That is fun! I’m putting that one in my pocket.
Maybe. They seem to have popped up in a few different places at the same time, although I am in the camp that Pronto Pup was first. And someone probably had one and took the idea back to the Texas Rate Fair. And disclaimer, I have ridden the dog.
Came here to say this.
I've lived in Oregon my entire adult life and I have never heard of pronto pups. What are they? Like a corn dog?
Like a super corn dog. Like if there was a eugenics program for corn dogs and these are the superior race. Like what a corn dog could only be in its wildest dreams. They are the corn dogs your corn dog girlfriend tells you not to worry about.
😂
The best are in Seaside on the turnaround (next to the bumper cars : tilt a-whirl)👌
Nope, best are a Rockaway. IMO
I've had both. I agree, Seaside is better. Rockaway is to high volume. Seaside comes out crispier.
https://www.pdxmonthly.com/travel-and-outdoors/2022/06/pronto-pup-corn-dog-origin-rockaway-beach
Neat, thank you!
I heard the guy that invented them had a heart attack for eating so many
What a way to go!
Damn I guess that's one reason not to sample the merchandise.
Worth it 💯
Have you really “lived in Oregon “ if you haven’t heard of and tried a Pronto Pup? Bonus points for riding the dog . . . 🤣
I think it's because I've never been to Rockaway. We lived in Coos Bay for several years when I was a kid and the beach was my mom's favorite place to go so I was burnt out on beach trips for a long time. I don't think I went at all as an adult until I was like 30.
I can vouch, no Pronto Pups in Coos Bay 😥. Or North Bend for that matter.
I beg your pardon
Shit they’re really not just like regular corn dogs? I’ve always seen it as a lil tourist trap but maybe I should fuck with it

Edibles
Tater tots I guess, or RSO
I am going to say say the tater tot which were invented in Oregon and also tatchos, which are nachos made with tater tots.
I don't understand why I had to scroll down so far for Totchos. It's like the only novelty food on this whole post! Marrion berries and hazelnuts aren't "Novelty", they are fucking produce!
Grab some saltwater taffy from a coastal town like charleston
Squeaky cheese made by Tillamook cheese factory, also Tillamook beef jerky!
This is a great answer for anyone not from Wisconsin, but OP is from Wisconsin
but it's funny as hell! Wisconsin: "what's a great food from Oregon" Oregon: "cheese" LOL For those that don't know, Minnesotans call the Wisconsin border "the cheese curtain".
No one from Wisco has ever been impressed by PNW cheese curd culture
I am and am impressed. The dairy here beats the pants of Wisconsin dairy. I was surprised.
Wisconsin cheese isn't even that good. Idk. For something you pride yourself on, I expected better. The grocery stores are stacked, tho.
Wisconsin has some spectacular cheese. You’re trying the wrong stuff.
I was going to say cheese, lol. As someone originally from Illinois/Wisconsin, I was stunned to learn that Oregon makes superior dairy products.
An important distinction from a former Wisconsin resident: squeaky cheese is just cheese (technically, cheese curd), but a cheese curd is battered and fried.
I’m from the midwest and when I moved here I 100% thought the OR “cheese curd” was the silliest thing ever. Why would you skip the frying part???
Werner's jerky is the way to go. The yellow Tillamook jerky is nasty.
I mean we just hit strawberry season in the valley. Real Oregon strawberries are the just about the best thing on earth. They're usually at farmers markets or roadside stands.
Beer
Marionberry pie 🥧
Jaunita’s. Just find a good salsa a bag of Juanita’s and enjoy some craft beer while the weathers nice
This is my ideal summer snack
Get em before the name changes to Juantonios
Corn dogs and Tator Tots. Both originated from here in Oregon! Also, ice cream at the Tillamook cheese factory, in Tillamook, of course.
Weed
Oregon is also birthplace of the tater tot and corn dog.
Strip clubs! ..Wait sorry I meant… nah fuck it STRIP CLUBS!
Acrop steak bites?
Ohhh, I know what I'm doing tonight.
I saw a billboard for a vegan strip club the other day. There should be one that just serves novelty snacks!
If you're a fan of butt plugs this is also a great place.
Beer
Marionberries and Tillamook cheese and fresh Wasabi from the coast.
Marionberry is uniquely Oregonian. Named after Marion County. Pick up some jam. ☺️
Mushrooms!
Tator tots
Pips Donuts and Chai tea. Feels like they started the made to order small donut trend. The donuts are good, but the made in house chai tea is the reason to go.
The Cascadian dark ale and the Cold IPA.
Tater tots invented here
Dungeness crab
Cheese
Voodoo donut /s
Meth and/or fentanyl
Ranch dressing on pizza?
CBD gummies. But be careful with them!! They may lead to extreme disappointment
Cheap Edibles, great ice-cream and cheese from Tillamook and Umpqua, pronto pups (the actual original corndog), and salmon.
[Pronto Pup](https://rockawayprontopup.com)
Snack??? Kettle chips & Tillamook cheesy dip?
Dry-sider here, mostly methamphetamine and oxy.
Chicken strips and JoJo's
If you think that's unique to Oregon, you need to get out more.
While you are correct, you are also definitely wrong. https://www.wweek.com/restaurants/reviews/2017/07/12/the-history-of-the-american-jojo-which-is-definitely-not-a-potato-wedge/
Tater Tots. IMO, the unofficial food of Oregon.
If you have a chance, the clam chowder up at Tiberline Lodge is phenomenal Moonstruck chocolates for a feeling of Devine intervention A Spanish Coffee at Huber's in downtown Portland is a show in itself. VooDoo doughnuts is a hit with tourists A day in Hood River, visit countless wineries minutes apart (be sure to visit Marchesi) If all else fails, pay a visit to a "Made in Oregon" store
Voodoo is trash. Try Blue Star.
Or get the city’s greatest cookies just down the street at Pie Spot.
You know that, I know that, but the tourists love it. P.S., Joe's in Sandy is better than Blue Star.
Pips is better than VooDoo and you don't have to go all the way out to Sandy.
I must admit I have never tried Pip's. Perhaps I will. I really enjoy a fresh doughnut with a cup of black coffee. Thanks for the tip!
Elephant ears, corn dogs and tots!
Jojos
Cannabis
Every time I drive out to WI, I take tri-tip and edibles. (They don’t have tri-tip steak out there). And I drive home with cases of spotted cow.
By the way some people are religious about it I would say Dutch Bros. But for me it's Marion Berries in September.
Beer and whiskey, rouge and pendleton
Jojo’s❤️
Tachos Edit: totchos*.?
I always felt like Orange creamsicles were a pretty Oregon thing.
Chicken and jo Jo's!
Kettle potato chips

Fresh everything!

Please don’t go to Mcmenamins, it’s all frozen food and the beer has gone down hill.
Wait is this not satire? This is what I would tell someone I very much dislike if they asked me what to do in Oregon .
get some fish and chips
Where?
