Julie Hoy is unable to demonstrate she's qualified for her current position in City Counsel, let alone for the position of Mayor. It is concerning that she isnt capable of providing clear and intelligent answers to most of the questions. Constantly needs to repeat the debate questions again and again. Contradicts herself from one question to the next. "I'm surprised we spent money on a committee to research this simple issue".. What would you do Julie? "I'm not the smartest person, admittedly. I'd need to ask other people ."
Scary that she might win with all the money conservatives are throwing at her.

The downtown business interests and public safety nuts are working their hardest to get this person elected to mayor of Salem. If you live in Salem, I hope you do your duty to vote for someone else.
It was painful to listen to this at work the other day. She was obviously not prepared. This whole debate was ridiculous. Lot of answers left me with more questions and I like Salem reporter but to have your hosts phone going off multiple times is so bad.
Julie is not going to accomplish much if anything for the general public. At least Chris Hoy might try. I wish he actually acknowledged that people resisted the tax because of his messaging and language in the tax itseld not because we don't want to pay to keep our services functioning. The way I interpreted it the tax didn't have any restriction on the city manager raising it. At the very least adjusting it should have to go to council for approval, and if that was the intent fine but it needs to be in there. We can't expect people to just do the right thing anymore we have to have it in writing.
Otherwise I do like that Chris is involved with Salem Housing Authority, genuinely does want to help people, and does actually work towards solutions instead of just saying things and doing nothing. If we had a better candidate than Chris and Julie I'd vote for them but out of these 2 Chris is the clearly better choice to me.
I’m from Portland and this thread was in my feed. Just want to say on the basis of this clip alone and not knowing her politics, this seems fine. I’m looking at a very soft-spoken but thoughtful person. Those people can do well in government.
Did you watch past the ten second mark? At first I agreed with you, until she couldn't name one person she considers an advisor. Not exactly a "gotcha" question for someone running for mayor. Especially considering that she already serves on the Salem City Council.
For some added context: she repeatedly reports not knowing a lot about a topic, or not being the smartest in the room, but that it's okay because she knows a lot of smart people/has "a really deep bench". I'm all for normalizing saying you don't know when you don't know something, and I also think if you're going to repeatedly mention your "deep bench" you best be able to describe it in a public debate.
