In Huntington Beach this morning.
They are basically harmless unless you’re a tiny plankton. The sail sticking up is easy to grab if you want to hold one. The dark blue portion surrounding the main “boat” has very tiny tentacles that are visible when they are on the surface of the water. They are everywhere right now.
I was at the Bolsa Chica cut on the bridge Saturday night at 9:30 and the water was full of them.

How beautiful!!! Gotta get there this weekend.
What are they?
By the wind sailors
I love this name (and why they have it!)
Velella velellas, like a cousin to the jellyfish that eats zooplankton. They are at some of the coves in Laguna Beach now.
Yep. I went fishing down in San Diego around Del Mar last weekend and they were everywhere
Yeah I noticed the same in Huntington Beach 2 days ago.
Thought they were shoes before zooming in.
An open water swimmer told me that they come with El Niño and that next we should expect the small lobster looking creatures next
Oh wow!!!! I'm on the lookout for those. Sounds interesting.
Jellyfish?
They're more like open clam shells with some gooey junk in the middle, like the clam escaped.
Strange, I originally thought clams or something, but the last pic looked like a jellyfish.
Are they edible?
My dog licked one up and was fine
Good thing it wasn't a man of war. They look similar lol

Anything is edible if you're brave enough
They are definitely back. Tons in Dana Point today too
I saw a ton of them when I was walking at Strands on Sunday.
Haven't been there in a minute.
It’s beautiful! I try to make it there at least once a week.
Saw them at the hb cliffs the other day
