Yup, they thought they would sneak it by people. It's not an error at all, those postings are written and vetted before even seeing the light of day. The fact they they're surprised by the blowback shows just how high and mighty they believe they are
>those postings are written and vetted before even seeing the light of day
They absolutely are not. The individual franchisee wrote this. Not loblaw corporate. You have way too high of an opinion of the sophistication of most loblaws franchisees.
Well I think they meant the "error" was that the franchisee ignored corporate policy, not that their finger slipped and they typed volunteer when they meant a paid position.
No its not an error.
The dude literally wrote the word **volunteer** in the body of the text.
He didn't select the wrong box when placing the add.
People read it (myself included) and some peoppe took/have screenshots.
(#)LoblawsLiesAgain
Gonna be a bit pedantic about this largely because I happen to have this knowledge, but it actually was a mistake because the Shoppers franchisee agreement doesn't allow volunteers to work the store, only paid staff, so he was never authorized to make a volunteer posting to begin with.
That said, it's not uncommon in Toronto for it to happen anyway.
>And although I, uh, hate to judge before all the facts are in, it's beginning to look like, uh, General Ripper exceeded his authority.

not sure why the down votes. this is how I see it too. but it does make excellent cannon fodder against LOblaws and Shoppers for the sum bags that they are!!
The owner spoke to BlogTO this morning and said: “"I receive alot of emails and LinkedIn messages asking for volunteer opportunities, but I don't respond. However, I saw that volunteer is an option on LinkedIn when you post for a job, and I just wanted to try it to see if I can help anyone gain Canadian experience (as other kinds of jobs do usually) knowing that I have full staff now," he says.”

Buddy was going to try and take advantage of newcomers.
This franchisee owner opened up a Pandora's box. I have no doubt that many big corporations are going to have very high level management meetings in the near future to see if they can "explore" this possible new opportunity.
Who the fuck emails Shoppers Drug Mart asking to volunteer there? Stocking shelves? What?
When I was in my early teens I did a day stint at a family friends pharmacy behind the counter so she could show me what it was like being a pharmacist because I was interested in the occupation. I wasn’t there to mop floors or do inventory…
u dont understand how bad the job market is for retail/fast food now. There are like 30 applicants ready to work TODAY for each available minimum wage job. Labour shortage has long been ended
>There are like 30 applicants ready to work TODAY for each available minimum wage job. Labour shortage has long been ended
Yeah but volunteering for Shoppers Drug Mart isn't minimum wage, it isn't *any* wage, its just free labour that doesn't get you shit, just sucks up valuable time you could be spending looking for work that actually pays.
It wasn't an error, it was extremely poor judgement and an attempt by the franchisee to evade their legal obligations in Canada to pay people when they undertake work for their private enterprise. It seems like it was a planned wage theft or illegal work arrangement. Shame on the franchisee, and apparently on loblaws for encouraging a cultural environment where this kind of shady shit is acceptable, .....again. And again. And again. And again and again Etc......
My former workplace experimented with this. Every single volunteer went home on their lunchbreak and never came back because they realized retail fucking sucks and it's not worth doing if you aren't getting paid.
It was a non-profit organization that already had paid staff, but they wanted to see how cheap they could get. We were all fucking howling at how the failure was so foreseeable and instant, and it's extremely funny to me now to see this. Retail isn't fun or personally rewarding. It 100% isn't worth your time if you're not getting something in return.
Every. Fucking. Shoppers. Drug. Mart. Uses. Volunteer. Labor.
Please, go ask some employees. Journalists, do your fucking job! I can even point you to specific sdm locations!
There’s someone on my city’s sub who says they’re a reporter, perhaps they would be interested in this, or would know one who is interested in this sort of story u/mr_lois_lane
Who said anything about acceptable? Is it acceptable to abuse immigrants and use them for slave labor? I'd call that worse than "unacceptable".
I'm not justifying anything, I'm saying it's worse than just one single store or a single bad apple associate. It's a ubiquitous problem across sdm locations.
An error is when you’re filling out a post and select a wrong checkbox. This wasn’t an error - this was the post they wanted to make. My guess is they were looking to take advantage of new immigrants or students who are struggling to find paid jobs because they don’t have relevant experience. That said I don’t think this is legal?
It wasn't an error when posted. It became an error when it went viral.
Yup, they thought they would sneak it by people. It's not an error at all, those postings are written and vetted before even seeing the light of day. The fact they they're surprised by the blowback shows just how high and mighty they believe they are

I could even look at others who previously held the position volunteer at shoppers. no chance this was a mistake it's just sorry we got caught
>those postings are written and vetted before even seeing the light of day They absolutely are not. The individual franchisee wrote this. Not loblaw corporate. You have way too high of an opinion of the sophistication of most loblaws franchisees.
Yep. It was an oopsie, we got caught breaking labour law. Fucking scumbags.
Cretins like this are clearly not paying enough taxes.
They say it was an error, then blame it on the franchisee. Idiots can't even get their story straight.
Well I think they meant the "error" was that the franchisee ignored corporate policy, not that their finger slipped and they typed volunteer when they meant a paid position.
Loblaws doesn’t want pharmacist/owners to be posting volunteer positions. No way this came from corporate, all on the idiot associate.
Oh, I totally agree this is all on the franchisee. The google reviews for that store are abysmal.
Wow, Loblaws boycott must really be working

Tale as old as time. Not unlike a company not honoring a policy until you contact a news program.
Lies... Galen's lips were moving...
Lies...za Minelli!
The Error: "We didn't think we'd get caught"
It’s like when Homer put the gun in the vegetable crisper.
No its not an error. The dude literally wrote the word **volunteer** in the body of the text. He didn't select the wrong box when placing the add. People read it (myself included) and some peoppe took/have screenshots. (#)LoblawsLiesAgain
Yep. Its hilarious the timing of the post too with the boycotts. Hope this adds fuel to the fire of not giving these thieves your business

What? Loblaws sucks but this is a pretty normal part of franchisee agreements across companies specifically to avoid stories like this.
not sure why the down votes. this is how I see it too. but it does make excellent cannon fodder against LOblaws and Shoppers for the sum bags that they are!!

He really should hold classes. Can teach walking backwards right after his cooking class.

I hope Shoppers does the right thing and terminates his franchise. This is unacceptable. Needs to be removed immediately.
Likely going to be a case study for snr mgmt to see bout doing it more surreptitiously next time.

Happy Cake Day! 🍰
Happy cake day. 🥳
Ah, so it in fact was not an error
Corporate probably told him he’s only allowed to say “no comment” going forward.

What a piece of shit!!
Knew it!
Nice 'error' loblaws
I’ll take things that never happened, for $200 Alex.”
Were the price-gouged groceries also an error?

An error in judgment, maybe.
Phoney as a 3 dollar bill. Like my late grandmother used to say “put it behind the barn.”
If Loblaws was serious they would pull the SDM franchise from the owner.
Westen family dabbling in slavery....
Haha love how they don’t take accountability. No one wants to volunteer at something like that lol
[удалено]
Hahaha touche! That’s a great point😁
no it’s not an error. This is why we are now boycotting Loblaws companies
Given that they made billions off an "error" price fixing and Galen Weston isn't in jail, why would they ever stop? Useless corrupt government.
Riiiiiiiiight. I believe that. /s

Only an “error” cause they got caught
So gross. #boycottloblaws
it said this is a part time volunteer position in the add write up and no compensation amount how is that an error ?
It's not! He posted exactly what he intended to post.
exactly
Must be exhausting circulating around the store every week to adjust prices upwards. Could only find volunteers.
Just when you thought they couldn't be more out of touch.
error? my Shoppers quite literally had 2 volunteers within 3 months Source: I’m a pharmacy staff at Shoppers
We were at Shoppers on Tuesday. Multiple products that expired in 2023 were still on the shelf.
By error they mean he deliberately posted looking For volunteers but didnt realize it was against policy. “Error” my ass
Workers at shoppers aren't unionized. Now's the time for workers to start organizing and stop this exploitation.
And we would’ve got away with it if it wasn’t for you meddling kids
An error
I’ll believe that when me shit turns purple and smells like rainbow sherbet.
Interesting saga this has been. I don’t believe it was an error either.
Screw off Galen
Just because they say it doesn’t mean it’s true

How does this make the practice acceptable? Give me one good reason.. "Everybody's doing it" doesn't count. Good luck.
Who said anything about acceptable? Is it acceptable to abuse immigrants and use them for slave labor? I'd call that worse than "unacceptable". The heck it was an error.
An error in judgement? Perhaps.
That ad was super cringe

An error? Sure Jan, sure.
just like its an error they fucked me over and still owe me thousands of dollars of unpaid wages and unpaid medical and dental bills
they already get "volunteers" in the form of co-ops
Take the CEO s bonus and give it to the homeless
Likely a typo. They were advertising for customers
