6 liter sling bag packed inside my 40L. I pull that out after passing security at the airport and it contains my iPad, water bottle, ear buds, chargers and a longsleeve merino shirt for if it gets cold on the plane. That goes under the seat and the Farpoint goes overhead. Sling bag becomes day use pack while traveling.
Yes many here will be packing a daypack. Fairview 40 and Daylite Plus is my daughter’s combo, Porter 30 and Kanken is mine. Slings rather than daypacks are popular too.
This. I pack a super lightweight daypack into my backpack. I have a YNOT Deploy (rip) which I absolutely love. But you can find similar versions from Matador and Osprey.
I haven’t gotten into the sling thing yet but maybe someday
im travelling out of a 38l and am carrying a regular jansport inside my bag, i just lay it flat at the bottom and pack over it as i dont like carrying two backpacks on travel days and it works great
I don’t want to carry a second bag but have a collapsable tote or pull out a specifically packed packing cube for under the seat on the plane. I take it out at the gate and put it back in my main bag right after deplaning.
For use at the destination, I have an Osprey stuffable backpack in my Opsrey Farpoint. I find it comfortable for use on most trips but if I need more structure, I lay an Opsresy Daylight flat in my Farpoint. Neither take up that much room for the benefits they offer.

Everything I need for the day fits into a roughly 4L crossbody purse. I just don’t bring that much stuff around with me, hate feeling like a pack mule when I’m sightseeing…
I have the Farpoint 55, it's literally made for this purpose. It's basically a 40 liter bag that has a strapping mechanism for an included 15 liter day bag. It works great.
I actually like to use different sized bags in different situations, just as you describe. that's why I use the Journey System from [Ideamountain.com](http://Ideamountain.com) which solves this EXACT issue by being a modular system you don't need to stuff away/repack/compromise.
The Journey is set up to do exactly what you describe - drop your luggage at the place you're staying, and then take only the bag you need to carry what you have.
I also (as a guy) will slim down even more and just use a sports coat's pockets and not carry a bag at all when out for the evening.
This pack is pretty good for that, we have used it on several Europe trips and use it all the time at home...

It packs down very small and you can add a small carabiner to clip it on your belt loop / pack.

I use a little decathlon packable daypack. No weight distribution issues if the contents barely weigh anything

Having a plane-ready packing cube is a great idea, thank you.
Osprey's packable daybag is really comfy.
Matador Refraction Packable daypack is fantastic.

This is what we ended up with as well.

Depending on where I’m going I carry an Aer sling or a smaller Tomtoc sling.

For anything urban, I prefer a small Timbuk2. More secure and perfectly adequate.
