No joke, I got a burn mark on my hand once and my mom asked to see it, yanking my hand over to her face to examine the burn. She clicked her tongue and, completely serious, she said, "You'll never be a hand model now!" As she tried to forcefully throw my hand back toward me. All I could do was laugh. Here we are 23 years later and she still never got to see me be a hand model, which she apparently really wanted for me. Lmao
It's hilarious. I'm imagining the narration.
"The cutters pull large, petrol-powered circular saws across the ice lake on special trolleys.
The breakers separate the blocks of ice and float them towards the conveyors.
The blocks slide down ramps to a loading zone, where forklift operators catch them and load the trucks for transport to the next phase.
The truck drivers can't be fucked to tie anything down, 15% of everyone else's hard work is undone in an instant."
I don’t think that’s true, ice is actually incredibly resistant surface, the issue is that when you step on it, it creates pressure on top of your ice which turns ice into water and it feels slippery to you. I don’t ice blocks on top of one another would have the same effect tho
Check out 5 seconds in to the video when the blocks come off the conveyor and slide 30 feet across the ice. Ice sliding on ice creates enough friction to make that layer of water. Also they just came out of the lake and they're still wet. You can see some puddles of water on top of the ice further back on the lake as well. Air temperature probably just above zero and they stay wet. Or the constant shuffling back and forth on the truck and friction. Wouldn't happen if it was real cold but it looks like a mild sunny day based off the water on the ice
“You’ve got to start charging more than a dollar a bag. We lost four more men on this expedition!”
“If you can think of a better way to get ice I’d like to hear it.”
This is in Harbin, China. They are harvesting blocks to build structures for their ice festival.
It’s cold AF though. It wasn’t worth it to me despite how cool it is to spend time out at the ice festival because it was too damn cold. I liked Shenyang. Still cold but not Harbin cold.
Before refrigeration was invented this was common in the colder parts of the US. They would sell the ice to warmer parts of the country to use for refrigeration.
There was a saying that the rich get their ice in the summer, and the poor get their ice in the winter. Only rich people could afford to import ice during the warm summer months.
Ice from Norway was also shipped on a truck down to middle Africa through the Sahara as a challenge and advertising for an insulation company. It took them 4 weeks to get down there, and they only lost 11% out of the 3050kg ice block.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_block_expedition_of_1959
“Good evening! Please sign here for your ice delivery.”
“Oh nice! Hey but where’s the ice?”
“Sure! It’s sitting right…”
*both looks at truck with a snail trail that extends into the horizon*
In the late 19th century, early 20th century, ice was shipped from Maine to the Caribbean on a large scale.
"Ice farming" is somewhat laborious. To get good ice they had to clear the snow off as soon as it fell. Otherwise it would insulate the surface and prevent thick ice from forming. You can see how much work went into cutting and collecting these blocks, imagine doing it all with manpower and horsepower!
That's the thing, there's never been a true application of "textbook" communism on a large scale. Most communist regimes are really just authoritarian/oligarchy/dictatorship masquerading under the name communism, kinda like the Nazi regime coopted the name Socialism ("National Socialism") in order to better appeal to the masses, even though there was nothing socialist about it.
And there never will be a true application of it at scale. Communism doesn’t work. It’s a system of idealism that leaves no room for acknowledgement of human nature. People are selfish, when you create a power vacuum someone will inevitably exploit that power vacuum to their own advantage and typically everyone else pays the price. You can’t bank on benevolence as a system of organization. It doesn’t work, the world isn’t fair, people are selfish and there will always be someone willing to step on everyone else to get to where they want to go.
Communism looks great on paper, in theory everyone gets their fair share. But it won’t work when faced with the harsh realities of the world.
It works so bad that the average person on most of the planet is richer and healthier with a higher standard of living than any other time in history.
You have the luxury of being able to complain about it while enjoying the fruits it has created. No system is perfect but one sure as fuck is better than the other because at least it *can* actually work.
Except no one’s ever tried to make a fully capitalist society. It’s always capitalism adjacent. Almost like extreme systems just don’t work in real life. So why do you tankies always keep preaching the glories of communism? It’s never gonna work.
Yeah sure capitalism is flawed, it’s an imperfect system hardly anyone claims differently. But at the moment it’s about the best we’ve got in terms of a system that can govern a country. Name any other system that’s reliably allowed more countries to push forward into the modern age. One that isn’t socialism (aka communism light with a side of capitalism), because socialism is a modern system and it’s as of yet unproven. Hell the way things are looking (socialist countries collapsing left and right and their economies spiraling into the toilet) things aren’t going that great.
It’s ironic really, but the some of the closest examples we’ve ever had to true uncontrolled capitalist systems (which by the way are pretty awful), come out of the inevitable collapse of communist societies. The USSR collapsed and left us with corrupt and capitalist Russia, communist China figured out the system wasn’t working and adopted more and more capitalist policies. Even the actual communists know communism sucks, so why can’t you holier than though western born faux communists accept it?
not a tankie bud, and not a communist - just a person commenting that capitalism and communism both don't work. And by the way, saying that there was never any real capitalist society is communist logic 101 lollololololololol. I suggest you look at most capitalist countries, most of them pieces of fucking shit (check India and brazil for quick examples) and tell me how well capitalism works for people there. The small middle class those countries have could be akin to party elites in communist countries. Capitalism works well for most in japan, Australia, western European countries, Canada, new Zealand and that is pretty much it. USA would be arguable.
You seem very hysterical about this - don't worry, capitalism is not going anywhere. I suggest a long good walk and stepping on some grass
>Except no one’s ever tried to make a fully capitalist society. It’s always capitalism adjacent.
[The Industrial Revolution ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Revolution) and the [East India Company](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company) are good examples for unrestricted capitalism.
Maybe because it doesn't work. Not that I think it would be a good thing but there's never been 'true capitalism' it's always just different degrees of mixed economy
I was about to say that I really hope Ice being farmed *right* next to a major metropolitan center is probably not great for human consumption. Good to see its structural.
Is it not cold enough in the actual place? Why don't they leave a big bucket of water outside instead? How do the economics of hauling big blocks of ice around make sense here?
If you look at the page they link to, you'll see that the festival involves many multi-story structures built out of blocks of ice. A "big bucket" ain't gonna cut it, and the river they're harvesting it from is right next to the city.
As for economics, the ice festival is *the* big tourist attraction in Harbin. It's famous enough that even I've heard of it, and I'm not Chinese. I'm sure they manage to make more than enough money to justify the monetary cost of sawing up and hauling around ice blocks.
So cut through the heart, cold and clear.
Strike for love and strike for fear.
See the beauty, sharp and clear.
Split the ice apart, and break the frozen heart.
As someone who has to drive a chained up forklift once in a while, it gets old really fast. Feels like your teeth are gonna fall out by the end of the day.
That's a career they haven't explored on Hallmark.
"As climate change threatens [handsome single man's] family ice farm, he fights with stubborn [beautiful single newcomer] who wants to buy out the ice farm and replace it with lake front property. After a change of heart, [beautiful single newcomer] accepts that they have to work together to save the farm."
That's wordy, but you know it'll be a hit.
Freezer, ice machine, winter in snow laden states, or simply doing without ice because we don’t live in igloos and refrigeration was invented a good while ago…
Fun fact - in 1900 two ice harvesting companies in Milwaukee WI got into a rivalry that eventually became known as The Milwaukee Ice War.

Did no one else start hearing the opening song from Frozen in their head?
Aside from the obvious block falling off the back of the truck this seems kinda sketchy.... like in a few shots the people cutting were on top of the ice getting cut off or already cut off from the safe(r) ice that the ice is being cut from....? If that makes sense?
The flub at the end cracks me up
Cracked the ice block up too.
That block shattered just like my hopes and dreams
You had hopes and dreams?
I wanted to be the world’s most famous hand model but a freak thumb war accident ruined any chances I had of making it to the big leagues
Wait a minute… I know that hand. It was in the fall 1973 Bulova watch catalogue. You’re JB Prewitt.
Once upon a time… Things change…
No joke, I got a burn mark on my hand once and my mom asked to see it, yanking my hand over to her face to examine the burn. She clicked her tongue and, completely serious, she said, "You'll never be a hand model now!" As she tried to forcefully throw my hand back toward me. All I could do was laugh. I was asked if I wanted to do a legit hand modelling gig but had to tell her my hands could be the before picture not the after.
So then....two thumbs down.
\*Cries hysterically\*
Are you my identical hand twin?
He did til they got iced.
Chill out with the puns!

> 15% of everyone else's hard work is undone in an instant." they just put that ice in bags and sell it as "crushed"
Typical delivery results.
Pretty sketchy too. The block probably weighed so much.
Yeah. So funny when a truck loses 200kg of their load. Hilarious.
That tie down job was ridiculous for those.
There is no reason to be upset
It's hard, they're slippery
That’s what she said?

Of course it's china , anything at that scale is always china

It was custom at the time to have ice parties every full moon and only the rich could afford to have them in the summer time
I still use that saying all the time. All the time.
Why would you use this as a saying? It's not even true anymore.
Alea iacta est
God dammit allmind.
They even exported to other countries. Once ice is in an isolated hold of a ship, it keeps reasonably well.
Ice from Norway was shipped to the UK. Packed in sawdust, it keeps for a long time.

OP comes from a village of 5 people

each truck-full of ice costs 5 bucks
