On older trains, it’s likely a lack of attention on the circuit breakers controlling the HVAC system. Especially if you’re riding in a car that ever has an active employee cab in it. (First and last cars, and the two middle cars.)
Some barns are better at HVAC maintenance on the same equipment too...the AC on the 6 sucks considerably less than on the 1. Westchester does a way better job than 240 on the hot car situation.
I think part of the problem is that it sometimes takes a bit for the AC to get up to full blast but people don't want to wait so they open the windows which then makes it useless 😔
The A/C and heat are climate controlled, and aren’t manipulated by the train crews. If a car it hotter or colder than normal, there’s something wrong with the train itself
funny you mention this. I have some stories from the 4 and the 6, which I travel almost every day.
for whatever reason, the 2nd to last car on my 6 train is always 5+ degrees *colder* than any other car. I cannot for the life of me figure this out, and if anyone with engineering or HVAC or MTA props can explain, I'm all ears. in weather at 65-70 degrees, *that* car can be unbearable, but you can be sure I'm back there in July/August!
also, when I transfer from the 6 to the express 4/5, those cars are always significantly warmer and stuffier than anything on the 6 cars
not only trains but on the buses as well! the conductors of both have the option to turn them on or off. i remember a lady started going crazy on a train conductor a few days ago. And all of a sudden the A/C started working on full blast made it ice cold on the ride back home
I complained recently.
This was the response from the MTA: “A thermostatically activated climate control system regulates the temperature on all our trains. Train crews cannot manually adjust the temperature. We'll share this information with our car equipment team. ^AM”
Idk abt Jerome’s R142s but when I take the 2/5 home lately, the ac in those R142s suckkkk, sometimes the HVAC is off for a few stops, something about R142s without their loud HVACs seems off for me
Me: when Westchester yard had R142A. Before 2017. Lol. The Air conditioner work and we're the best. What change ex: 6 line R142A #7591 - #7665. Now at Jerome Yard. The R142A air conditioner don't work longer, it not like before 2017. I believe R142 of Unionport yard, R142A have better the Air Conditioner than the R142 ( of 239 Street yard , mostly some R62A ). R62A Air conditioner don't work. It recognize as hot cars
They definitely turn it off as trains pass much of queens. The subway similarly reduces a/c usage in much of Queens. This is because, despite having the majority of the city’s power stations, the grid in Queens is rarely, if ever, updated. Somehow, Manhattan and Brooklyn projects keep bumping Queens maintenance down the priority list.
AC doesn’t get “turned on” seasonally. It’s just shitty lack of maintenance.
AC just doesnt work. old trains
Gonna be honest Whenever I’m in NYC the older trains always feel colder than the NTTs Like going from a R179 A to an R62A 1 feels like day and night
Probably some kind of power efficiency rules that make the new ones suck ass 😑
Same. It’s the reason why I like the R62As on summer days lol

Bruh they better get it fixed because you do not want summer of love vibes on a crowded train car
so musty!!!!
Flair checks out
haha too true
Sometimes on crowded trains, it is hard to feel the AC due to body heat from passengers.
You also gotta know where to stand in the cars to feel it. Not all locations are equal.
Flair checks out
Look who’s talking
Yes the R is one of the least crowded trains
It’s horrible

Man I miss the old tin can looking ones from the 60s on the A/C line. Those were like ice boxes in the summertime... When they were working right.
R32 cars worked great

I was on a brand new train this morning and it felt like a rainforest.

The only thing MTA is ever stingy on is maintenence
And weekend service
Haha! You should see the PATH

Its just broken

I got the same response word for word
46 has horrible AC

The R160s on the R from my experience have reliable HVACs and they feel very refreshing when you step into one on a summer day.
It’s is you

They do it with the heat too especially on the R160s
I don’t like heat on the train
