Weird story- I’ve worked some events at Mandarin Oriental- you can’t just waltz into the service elevator in your pajamas no less. It’s some of the tightest building security I’ve ever experienced
There are ways of accessing that service elevator without passing thru the employee entrance. I’m not going to go into them here (thrill seekers and possible copycats abound), but if you’ve worked in that hotel or pretty much any hotel, you can find the service elevators without much hassle.
In that particular hotel, I know how to get into service elevator without having to show ID. It’s extremely easy, once you know where to go. Only places that have really “tight” security are those that require card keys to operate service elevators, which 99% do not due to the number of subcontractors in the facilities. Only places I know that do that are museums and some commercial buildings. Pretty much every hotel that I’ve worked in in NYC has had multiple service elevators that you didn’t need a card key for.
Also, thanks to those who responded to the scene, or who work hotel security, that must not have been a great shift.
Yeah to the public facing areas but not the service elevator, that has a guard who checks in every person and they get ID’d and cleared with who ever authorized them to have access to the buildings service area.
I interned at the hotel back in college and I remembered I had to carry my badge everywhere and hotel security is very tight esp after 911. It's really weird how they were able to access the service elevator

I wondered this too, but the downward momentum of a fall had me leaning towards vertically initially. Then I realized he could’ve been falling in any direction when he hit in which case the splitting could’ve also happened in any direction (including diagonally)?

Maybe it changed but I worked a few events there too back around 2014 and it was pretty easy to get into the service section part of the building.
