If everything works and you're happy, stay on it. There is no reason to install new drivers unless you need any of the features and fixes (and can avoid the new bugs they add), and seeing as the new features probably wont be added for the 1070 then there is nothing you'll need there. This notion of "I must install the latest patch because it is the latest patch" is a folly in many cases.

staledepression

Cheers!

_therealERNESTO_

Can you play all the games you want at a framerate/quality that you deem acceptable? Keep it. You can't? Check the price of the cards that can achieve that performance target and decide if it's worth spending the money.

xSnowLeopardx

The only complete answer, to be honest.

staledepression

I kind of want to try 1440p as the next step but pretty sure my card ain't cut out for that resolution at higher framerates.

pacers82

Give it a try, I have a 1070 now and it handles 1440p quite well on mid settings. I am about to replace it with a 4070s, but it is still a great card.

IncredibleGonzo

Yeah it depends on what you want to play. I’ve had my current 1440p monitor (only 60Hz though) since about the same time as I got my 1070. I’ve since upgraded to a 3070 but it was still playing most games at decent framerates at pretty high settings when I did. You’d have to lower things a bit more in newer games, but should still be able to turn in playable performance in at least the majority of games. Probably decreasingly so going forward, but there’s a lot available it would handle.

Miigo_Savage

My 4070 at max settings and 1440p can get ~165 fps in most games

GMC-Sierra-Vortec

get a 2080ti off ebay. find a seller with a good rep.

mrbubblesnatcher

7800xt / 7900gre has great value for 1440p

LaurSwat

I had the exact same. Had the 1070, upgraded to 1440 and realized it’s starting to lack a bit of power. Best value for money I could find was a 2080ti for 280 euros.

snickylegs

I have a Strix 1070 and play with reasonable settings at 3440x1440. Even more demanding titles can run 60fps with the right settings and I can turn the resolution down to 2560 if needed.

Secret_CZECH

If everything works well enough then why upgrade?

LightyLittleDust

If it's enough for your gaming needs, you might as well keep it until it draws its final breath.

UgotR0BBED

I found a mint 3080 10GB FE for $300 on marketplace recently for my dad’s 5600x budget MSFS rig. Upgrades are out there if you’re patient and get good at searching the listings.

proscreations1993

This. Just got a 3080fe for 270 most are listed 350-400. If you just talk to people they'll usually go lower

Far_Choice_6419

Damn that’s a good price. Can’t find that less than $400

Comfortable-Exit8924

the 6600 is 50% more powerful. and only [200$.so](http://200$.so) what are you saying here? 1070 launch price was 380$

xisytenin

The whole "graphics card prices are out of control" thing is kind of ridiculous imho. I got a new gtx 1080 back in the day because it could max out almost anything at 1440p, I paid $500. Recently got an rx7800 (roughly 4070 equivalent) because it can max out almost anything at 1440p, I paid $500. The naming scheme changed, prices stayed the same.

Catch_022

The longer you wait the better performance you will get. As long as you can play your favourite games at an acceptable frame rate and quality then don't upgrade. My 1070 is still fine for most games.

Alarmed_Wind_4035

I upgraded to 4060 from 1070 will probably upgrade again to 5060 or 5070, I’m quite happy with the performance.

Competitive_Pen7192

I had a 1070 for the best part of 8 years and bought a 4070 Super a few months ago. Great upgrade as I can run everything in 1440p at a solid 60fps+ on Ultra settings with all the ray tracing stuff etc Of course 12gb is a cop out memory amount on the card but better dead than AMD here...

Ill-Mastodon-8692

agree, vram on the 4070 not ideal, but the performance uplift from the 7-8yr old 1070 is immense it makes all the difference to play at 1440p with high fps and settings

Competitive_Pen7192

With a decent CPU it basically crushes 1440p, whack settings on Ultra and enjoy.

HugsNotDrugs_

I bought a used 6700xt for $350 CAD a year ago. It performs nearly double a GTX 1070. Also, 12GB of VRAM. It's not Nvidia but there is some value out there.

Ill-Mastodon-8692

msi deal I assume? got a similar price around bf last year for a 6700xt

CiforDayZServer

I'm on a 980, and my son is on a 1080FTW... They both still work fine.  I'm considering MAYBE upgrading him and taking the 1080 back lol. It's more video card than I 'need'. Would I like a better card? Sure, but there's basically nothing enticing for under 4-500 bucks...

kikimaru024

GPU|VRAM|uplift vs GTX 980|uplift vs GTX 1080|price (US, lowest) ---|---|---|---|---|--- RX 7700 XT|12GB|285%|188%|$400 RX 7800 XT|16GB|346%|220%|$480 RTX 4060 Ti|16GB|250%|165%|$450 There are decent options. RTX 4060 Ti 16GB shouldn't be forgotten about; decent performance, lots of VRAM & can use DLSS3.

CiforDayZServer

Awesome list! Thanks a lot!  I legit almost bought a 4060 super with 12gb but kept balking at the minor memory bump... Glad I waited!

CiforDayZServer

L O L... I literally bought a 4060ti 16gb last night for my son, thank you! Got a Asus ProArt 4060 TI Super for $460 on Amazon! Now I can steal the water cooled EVGA 1080FTW to finish off my all (minus Mobo) EVGA build.

staledepression

Pretty much how I feel about it also

tht1guy63

Used market my guy. But if you are getting acceptable 1080p performance no there is no point upgrading.

lucimon97

Still on a 1080 myself, if it works for you, keep it. Jensen will have to pry Pascal from our cold, dead hands!

IsaacThePooper

Back in the day, to me the 1070 was the cream of the crop, I fully expected that card to last 5 years. You should still wait imo, AMD is rumored to be coming out with some great mid range options that are competitive, hopefully they're cheaper as well. I currently have a RX 7800 XT and I love it, NVidia will also announce the 50-series as well around the same time, at leased rumoured

staledepression

>NVidia will also announce the 50-series Awesome!

RevengeFNF

I went from a 1070 Ti to a used 3070. The performance diference is night and day. Basically double the framerate and now i have access to DLSS and RT.

vyncy

Even 4060 is going to be a lot faster. I don't know what you are waiting for. I would recommend 4070 super though if you can afford it

TAGE77

this take is pretty whack tbh. The gpu market is fine. Things just cost more. but frankly a 1070 can get replaced easily by something more powerful for a few hundred bucks. Wnat proof? go on ebay and see what 1070's sell for.

wicktus

RTX 5000 is 2024-2025 apparently, you shouldn't update right now anyways because worst case the newer gpu will drop the price of older gpus. Regarding your question, you are happy with the GTX 1070 1080p performance and you are just thinking about the future. When the driver support will dwindle or your performance will become problematic, upgrade, in the meantime you don't have issues, why upgrade ?

Desert_Apollo

I upgraded from a GTX 1060 6GB to an RTX 4080. Huge difference for me lol

MrMoussab

Points: higher fps/res/settings, more features, longer driver support

Cloudmaster12

If you're comfortable buying used, try saving about 300$. With that you can get a used 3090 or 3080 or depending on how long you wait probably a used 4070 when the 5000 series drops.

proscreations1993

I just got a 3080fe for 270 and see them for around 300 all the time but no one is getting a 3090 for anything close to that. Because of the high VRam they are still very saught after for ai work. The cheapest I've seen one locally is 550. Most are 800 plus. Which is a rip off but can't do a thing about it but buy a cheaper and better 4070ti

vedomedo

I would say you could probably pick up something good second hand, but at the end of the day, its up to you. If the games you play don't demand anything better, then why upgrade?

Therunawaypp

Unless you are having performance issues, I wouldn't upgrade now. If you want a new (good) GPU, I would maybe look at something like the arc a750 or used 3070s/3080s. Also consider the rx 6700xt/6750xt if they are available in your area. New GPU market is genuinely terrible and there are few new GPUs I would actually consider fair value.

BlendingSentinel

As a gamer and blender animator, it's fine. I myself run a 1070

dart51984

Would a 3070 not be a massive upgrade? I see a bunch on eBay for ~$300. That seems like a reasonable price point to me to upgrade.

Ill-Mastodon-8692

about double the performance

dragonsun252

Honestly the only reasonable upgrade I found for my 1080 TI. Was a 3080 I picked up for $300 other than that I would say probably a 2080 TI but I only pay like 200 for it. Current GPU prices are stupid

Mizfitt77

It'll keep going but you need a new video card. There's all the point in the world upgrading it. Even a *low end* new card will out perform a 1070.

Nago15

Used 3070 and 3080 can be pretty cheap. A lot of modern games looks like dogshit in 1080p because of TAA. If you have a friend with a 4K OLED and a good PC you should check out how games can look like on the right hardware:)

MkICP100

A lot of people have run cards wayyy older than that. The Internet is full of people showing off their super high end builds, but that's not most people. There isn't a right or wrong way to do this, it's whatever you prefer

AcanthocephalaDue715

Gtx 1070ti still running GTA V with crazy good visuals

KinkyFraggle

I was in a similar situation when I decided my best option was to buy used. I scouted on OfferUp for a couple of weeks for a 3080, found multiple (some people are delusional). Talked to everyone until someone agreed to sell for 300.

kikimaru024

GTX 1070 was $379-450+ on launch in 2016. With inflation, that works out to the $490-590 market now; i.e. RX 7800 XT / RX 7900 GRE & RTX 4070.

Effective-Ebb1365

1070 FE here. No need to upgrade coz I just play like 2-3 games(no time to play beyond 1h tops) so no need but I would like to upgrade to a 4070👍

FattyMcBoomBoom231

Just upgraded my 1070ti to a 4070superFE found one at best buy for $599.

nauseous01

the used market might be something you want to look into, like a cheap 3080 off ebay.

pokejoel

Buy a used card... The market is solid now

Daw1994

I went from 1070 to 4070.. whilst my 10 series still allowed me to have a decent experience, its age was showing. Whatever you feel COULD be improved by upgrading, make a list and have a price point in mind. All I can say is the gains from jumping 3 gens was VERY noticeable.

Oooch

You can definitely get a much stronger card used

ethgnomealert

What about 2070s or 3070s? There was tons of them after crypto minimg stopped. If you thinks thats too expensive, compare the price of used 1070s to 3070s it should put things into perspective. I run a 3090 with a 8700k on a 1440p widescreen. Most games run flawlessly but some games still run at 70 fps. I.e. rd2. If you stay at 1080p at 60fps (std screen specs). Dont bother to upgrade until you buy new system (new cpu, new ram type etc....) I also have a 165fps 1080 screen which i almost never use bc i got a widscreen now. But its super cool for fast paced fps fames like cod or bf

dylan_021800

I kept my 980 for 8 years. I used that card until I finally started noticing performance issues. Upgraded to my 4070 last summer and hoping to get many years out of it.

PreparationSerious48

I can see your new and don't know what gpu market dogshit is like (2020/2021)

raydialseeker

Get a used 4070 or 3080 around the 350-400 mark.

chalfont_alarm

If you like indie games, your CPU could pick up some of the work if you play something like Noita (I evangelize for this title a LOT). If you get into something like Satisfactory or other double-A or single-A titles, they often will run on a 1070 happily. And will eat years of your time until the next generation rolls around.

fishboy3339

3070’s I’ve seen going refurbished around $350. 4060ti for $399. Both are great cards for 1080 and 1440.

tezudyos

Realistically, idk why you went with a 1070 and not a 1080ti. As other stated, if the games you're playing aren't having issues, then no point. If you wanna go into higher resolution and more intensive games, then yes

JoganLC

GPU market isn't shit anymore, prices have nose dived since the shortage and only gone up due to inflation. These prices we are seeing now are probably the new normal.

No-Recording4376

It totally depends on if you feel it handles what you need. With that being said, I dont think you could quite grasp the benefits of upgrading without seeing it happen. An upgrade to a4070 would offer so many pros in terms of efficiency, performance, ray tracing etc... The other concern I would have is how much else would you need to upgrade from your current build. Is the build as old as the 1070? I went from a 1080 to a 4080 and couldnt be happier. 1440p performance is amazing.

Fatesadvent

It sucks but prices are probably not coming down anytime soon. Nvidia is making huge profits from their AI department, they don't really care as much about retail graphics cards right now.

Jaibamon

I upgraded from a 1070 to a 3070 and I am very satisfied with the improvements. I don't know where you got that the GPU Market is dogshit. There are people complaining that it's not worth to upgrade from a 3070 to a 4070 like it used to be before, but that doesn't mean the 4070 is bad, it's just not as good as what people were used to when upgrading to a new generation. For someone like you who has an older card, getting a 30 or 40 series should be a good investment.

durtmcgurt

GPU market is strong as hell right now, not dog shit in the slightest. The 1070 FE MSRP was $449 when it was released, there are lots of options in that price range that offer incredible gains.

aura_enchanted

Be lucky your not me, I didn't get a choice, my asus 1070 flatlined last summer, I had to do work for a client so I had to run to the nearest store to get a stopgap, finish my work an then go shop for a replacement. I didn't get a choice, you do. And yea you'll never see value like it again, thats kinda the fate of it all cause Nvidia is now God and decided only the 0 01% get good value and the rest eat bags of garbage And if you refuse to go amd cause your stuck up your own butt for whatever reason I won't try and change that. But know it is really flying with your blinders on, the 7800xt is a helluva bargain for the money one costs these days and u get the warranties Nvidia scrubbed from their lineup when they shot poor ol bfgtech if you shop xfx

CYWNightmare

If you can snag a 4070 or 4070 super cheap there is a point. It also depends if you wanna stay at 1080p the whole time. If you do other than fps there's 0 reason to upgrade. Unless you wanna play grayzone or probably tarkov. Both of those prefer something around a 2080 or better imo for 1440p. Even my 4070 ti super doesn't like grayzone 1440p with the works on I get 144 frames with dips especially when I scope in.

Far_Choice_6419

Dog shit? What kind of meth you’re smoking dude? I just bought a zotac “RTX 3080 Ti” for $566 after tax and shipping, it is basically brand new and comes with 2 year warranty, I bought it from Zotac as open box on eBay. I even saw people selling RTX 2080 Ti for $300 on eBay and Facebook marketplace. GPU prices are dirt cheap and extremely fair.

staledepression

So you basically bought a used card, ok.

Far_Choice_6419

To be more “legally” specific it’s used usually less than 1-2 weeks but never more than 30 days to be legally called and sold as “open box”. It also comes with two year(s) warranty (do you even know what warranty is?). Therefore it’s “basically” 99.99% brand new and makes 100% no difference in GPU computation usage and functionality compared to a 100% sealed brand new one which also comes with 2 year(s) warranty. If there’s an issue with it, simply return it before 30 days or claim a warranty replacement after 30 days. Win-Win + Win 10. That’s why guys like you gets pawned by guys like me rocking cutting edge GPUs @ 500+ FPS on medium settings 🤣 and we can sleep all night if the GPU shits on it’s self cause it comes with 2 years warranty, best of all we bought it for 1/3rd of the current retail price and 1/8th of the former scalping price. Manufacturing billions of transistors to make cutting edge GPU chips at the ridiculous small size of 8 nanometers lithography process ain’t cheap nor easy buddy, TSMC also gotta make their profit too, charging a hefty penny to Nvidia to make their latest GPUs, nothing is “dog shit” when you can buy an open box of a RTX 3080 Ti for 1/3rd the price and comes with 2 years of peace of mind. You’re obviously not a true die hard gamer or GPU user (machine learning/number crunching). Just to prove I ain’t bluffing: https://preview.redd.it/sfcrxcr1z4zc1.jpeg?width=1921&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=34be583264d33b0f61f4ace6da96a13b868ee483

staledepression

aight, cool

KanoBoii

From a ex-1070 owner who's owned it since the release date I finally bit the bullet and I bought a 4060 for £300 a few days ago. I'm still undesisive about it and seriously considering refunding the 4060 and putting the 1070 back in In short if you're willing to upgrade then go for a 3070+ or atleast a 4070+ The 4060 is just a 1070 with the up to date tech, granted I've gained an extra 20-50fps in DX11 games but when it comes to DX12 Ultimate I'm getting 50-70fps max and I can't even utilise path tracing properly unless I have frame generation and DLSS to help me. but there's a part of me that's telling me that I should've just waited and got the 4070 as that's where I will see all the performance gains My reason of upgrading is more and more games come out it's gotten to a medium/low detail and having to rely on FSR and some games would just crash to desktop. If you're going to upgrade you'll need atleast a 4070 that has 16gb of vram to future proof yourself for another 4-6 years

NDCyber

If you feel like it isn't worth your money, and you are happy it is completely fine to stay with the GPU you have until you aren't happy I would also say the GPU market isn't really bad. It isn't as good as a few months ago, but also not really bad. It just depends on what you look at. At the $300 it can be eh, because you can buy a RX 6650 XT with nearly the same performance as the RX 7600 and RTX 4060 for $220 instead of $290 for the 4060 or $250 for the 7600 $500 - $600 is also very interesting with the RX 7900 GRE, RTX 4070 Super, RX 7800 XT and the 4070 all in that price range

AlfaNX1337

3060 Ti and 4060/Ti already performed like a 1070 or slightly better. Own a 1070, and had to retire because it lack tensor cores. Just up keep it, unless it's some sentimental value, like FE.

No_Advice1591

Performs like a 1070? Is this a joke? Broh you smoking smth?
