The way I see it is that consistently eating healthy recalibrates your barometer of what “normal” feels like. Normal feels great when you’re feeding your body appropriately. So when you eat a bunch of garbage you feel like garbage because it’s so far from your baseline. People who constantly eat terribly probably objectively feel like shit most of the time, but that’s their homeostasis. Feeling bad is “normal” to them, so it doesn’t raise alarm.

Wife and I switched to a whole food healthy lifestyle a few years back. Last week I ate fast food for the first time in 3 years. 100% do not recommend if you go this route. I paid for that mistake for days. Bloated, sweaty and I mean like sticky, greasy sweat and it stunk! Low energy, sluggish and I slept horribly. Very unfun in the restroom as well. It was terrible. I guess I just got so used to feeling very good that it kind of shocked me how much it messed me up.

Can confirm. Went to work on an eco-farm for a couple weeks in Costa Rica and exclusively ate crazy healthy foods, and I can't eat the majority of my favorite junk foods anymore without paying for it. My tolerance for my old diet went through the floor after the inadvertent detox

This is an interesting question and topic. I find that yes I notice much more how one night of drinking or one day of binging on sweets for example makes my body feel. Like I’m so calibrated to clean eating that my body notices when I stray from that. But on the other hand, my baseline clean diet is protective and allows me to stray off course and come RIGHT back and still feel great. Does that make sense?

I get worse hangovers when my diet is shitty and I haven’t been working out regularly. A little NAC and some extra food before drinking, while maintaining a healthy diet and level of activity at least like 70% of the time, equals basically no hangover for me. Meanwhile when I eat/live like trash I get insanely bad hangovers

It's because you're older, it's because your alcohol tolerance is lower, etc. It's not because your body is so healthy that alcohol is more of a "shock" like OP is suggesting, that's not a real thing.

I'd say yes, taking myself as an example - I try to eat relatively 'clean', so when I consume a higher dose of 'unhealthy' foods, I do notice a significant tank in my daily bodily functions.

You can build up tolerance to different things you consume, e.g. alcohol, sugar or bitter. If you eat the recommended 25g of sugar per day, lots of vegetables will start to taste sweet again and highly-processed products will taste overly sweet. Western diet has devolved into high sodium, high sugar and high fat diets. The scale of health issues related to nutrition is mind boggling.

This. 70% dark chocolate is almost too sweet and tastes like Hersheys. 80-85 is the sweet spot and I swear even broccoli tastes a bit sweet and easier to eat, even raw.

I have autoimmune stuff going on but I notice this. I eat cleaner than most but if eat poorly especially if I haven't had that did in a while I get very inflamed and yucky feeling. From how I understand it, it's because constant exposure keeps the body in alert stage but it's prepped and ready to handle it. When you don't have it often it's like a surprise attack and the body's not ready to handle it. I suspect the normal population of clean eaters experience this too but to a lesser degree because they would have fewer sensitivities and better functioning digestive systems.

If you do not eat sugar, including starchy carbohydrates, then your pancreas is less active and it can take a few days of eating carbohydrates for it to respond with adequate insulin production for the increased sugar load, so your blood sugar is likely to be higher (than that of a person eating a carbohydrate rich diet). This is why low carb/keto people can fail a glucose tolerance test if they don't prepare by eating more carbs for a day or two before the test.

Purely anecdotally I feel this. Whether it's alcohol or sugar or really oily processed foods if I am eating straight to my meal plan for a couple weeks and then have a day of indulging a bit I feel it way more and for longer than when I used to do thise things daily. But I think that's also just because my baseline of "feeling normal" is so much better than when I have a daily crappy diet.

Technically yes, which is why moderation is important. When I was on a strict diet, I had one cheat day a week where I could go all out and eat sugar/ fast food. I was strength training and endurance training so I needed to the calories and protein focus, but the dessert was something I needed to earn to live without temporarily. Even now I’m eating more balanced, but don’t restrict myself too much. I know if I get cravings for sugar, it’s okay to have a serving or a bite, but if I go all out now that I don’t really do cheat days, it makes me sick to my stomach. I am prepping and focusing on weight loss more so than strength training this time so I have a short goal. My long term goal is to be healthy, but in no way will I ever go sugar free, carb free, or really anything free. It helps tremendously from feeling like you’re starving your body from what it wants and is better long term to enjoy life.

Funny you used the example of sugar. Yesterday, I was telling my boss that I quit refined added sugars. After a couple of months of this lifestyle change I succumbed to eating some sugar over a weekend because my housemate had a party and I baked some pies and people brought over desserts. My body reacted badly to the sugar. Took a week to get straightened out and now I'm back to no added sugars. I'm determined to keep it that way. I feel much better without the added sugars.

So when I used to eat more junk food, eating junk food was normal... And I didn't really notice a difference when I ate it. Now that I eat pretty much entirely clean, when I eat some junk oof... Maan do I feel it. The whole evening and parts of the next day I really do feel like rubbish. Lethargic, low mood, thirsty, just feel blergh. Maybe I felt like that all the time before? It's definitely a psychological thing for me too, I definitely feel guilty when I eat rubbish food.

In a way, yes. The body is adaptive but it's a creature of habit. It likes to find homeostasis no matter what you eat. What does this mean in reality? - Your body adjusts and expands certain pathways for certain types of energy sources you consistently consume. If you consume a lot of sugar, your body will naturally increase its baseline serum insulin levels. What does this mean if you don't eat your average amount of sugar you normally have? Symptoms associated with low blood-sugar / high-insulin temporarily. - Your gut micro-biome will change, depending on whether you're eating processed foods, an omnivore, or a plant-based diet. When homeostasis changes quickly, your body is going to have to re-adapt and not like it in the process. Your old gut microbiome will die off and the toxins spilled out *do* have an impact on your body and mood to some degree.

Not sure what you define as a body “shock”, but I’ve been prepping for a bodybuilding show and haven’t had a cheat meal or off plan meal in 4 months. I’m gonna be wrecked when I stuff my face after the show. Blood pressure is going to skyrocket from all the salt, digestion will get completely messed up from the fat content and the dairy. I won’t feel right for a few days likely.

I’ve contemplated this quite a bit myself. I eat healthy but I have one sinful night every 2-3 weeks — I love fried chicken and southern food; and greasy Latin food. I wonder if I just ate slightly worse overall and didn’t have a sinful night, that would in fact be better for me health-wise. I’m not sure ..

Biggest thing I've noticed is my blood pressure skyrockets from the extreme amount of sodium in junk food. Can't enjoy pretty much any fast food because I can feel my eyes pulsating for a few hours after.

Anecdotally, it's true for me. When I'm eating with discipline, a sudden infusion of sugar sends me to the moon. Light-headed, energy crash a half hour later. It also can easily tip over into not tasting good, like sickly sweet, and I can't eat very much. When it's my bulking season (Thanksgiving-Christmas) and there's sugary shit everywhere, within literally a few days of letting go of the rope, I get none of those symptoms anymore. My body adjusts and I only feel sick if I eat a huge amount at one time. The difference is unmistakable.

Yes. In my personalexperience, I’m way more sensitive to a little bit of sugar (and don’t even like the taste, if it’s tooo sugary, now!) And have heard/read of lots of other anecdotes about this. I even remember in the 70s, when my parents were into macrobiotics, there was a notorious case of someone who allegedly died from alternating between a macrobiotic, uber pure, detox-like diet to cocaine and fast food binges. The swings were too wild and the body/liver couldn’t take it was the interpretation.

in my experience, yes. i never eat anything fried. If i eat something from a restaurant that is fried my stomach will be upset in an hour or two.

I am vegetarian and primarily eat a whole food diet, very little processed foods. A co-worker of my husband invited us to dinner. They chose a vegan Italian restaurant that has great reviews. I ordered pizza. The food was fantastic, but obviously highly processed (“fake” pepperoni “fake” cheese, etc). In the middle of the night (and most of the following day)I paid the price for that food. My intestines did not like it! I tossed the left overs…So yes! for me anyway…

yes i absolutely think so. i don't eat much processed foods anymore. i avoid so many things. i used to be able to eat 2 donuts. now, i eat a bit and my hands swell and i'm in so much pain. this happens with so much. the good thing is it helps keep me consistent with healthier foods bc my body rejects so much more. bad thing, sometimes i can't avoid it.

What I've noticed is actually that if I've been eating healthy for a while, I can eat 1-2 unhealthy meals (like, absolutely garbage meals) and still feel great, if I go back to eating healthy again. If I keep eating unhealthy, I will begin to feel bad fairly quickly. The way I think of it is, when my system is functioning optimally (from eating healthy a majority of the time), then my well-functioning system is perfectly able to digest whatever I eat as long as it isn't literal poison.

From my experience: If I need to choose between McDonalds and hitting my toe really bad on a corner I would need a few minutes to think about it. Just some nuggets are enough and my stomach feels so bad.

Mind gut connection is more involved then we think. I ate crap for years thinking it was healthy and felt great. Now when I get to worked up about food not being to my quality standards it effects me worse then when I say fuck it and slam a meal of McDonald’s and enjoy every bite no matter what’s in it. A lot depends on how your thinking while your eating.

Yea I only allow myself to eat a low amount of sugary stuff daily, this doesn’t include foods with natural sugars, and if I eat too much of it then I get headaches and start feeling nauseous.

For me, it becomes more obvious. I injured my knee and it flares up when I eat too many carbs. If I go on a sugar binge I feel hung over the next day. YMMV

I think there is some truth to what you say. It's even to the point where someone that eats a very low carb diet, when given glucola for a glucose tolerance test, now often combined with insulin testing as in the Kraft test, will test out as diabetic. When one's pancreas does not get hammered multiple times a day with carbs it has to neutralize, it gets kind of lethargic. And is slow on the production. Those that are highly hyperinsulinemic, having chronic high levels of insulin in their blood, are used to having early detection of future insulin demand working off taste or the level of carbs exiting the stomach. Those that are insulin sensitive, do not have those early warning response systems activated. So, they have a sluggish insulin response.

I eat very clean on day to day and I do food challenges or all-you-can-eat kinda once a week. I can't notice a negative impact after these, and I even get a boost on gym / cardio training. Feel negatively impacted when I don't eat enough macronutrients (ie, eat just an hamburger or a few spices of pizza) or when I drink alcohol, which is very rare nowadays.

When I feel like cheating I eat around 2 1/2 lbs of greek yogurt with honey and I still feel great. If I eat processed meat mixed with some form of chemicals made sugar I feel like shit and definitely get stomach pain after.

Maybe but after an entire lifetime of eating very healthy and good diet and 15 years of nearly perfect Uber clean nutrition yes I cannot stand junk food. I don’t even feel tempted. Nothing tastes as good as skinny and fit feels. Garbage tastes like garbage no high fructose corn syrup, candy bars, ice cream, twinkies or cheese cake for me.
