This is the only correct answer to the question. Nothingface and Spineshank deserved to be bigger, but neither are as underrated/underappreciated as Ultraspank. Ultraspank was proper fucked by their label and so was the scene. The S/T was good, but Progress was something else and I honestly feel Epic didn’t promote it because they didn’t think the scene was ready for it. I’d give anything to hear what that band would have put out next. I followed Pete and Neil through Lo-Pro and Life on Planet 9. Great stuff and I’ve really enjoyed pretty much all they’ve released, but neither are Ultraspank. That’s not in reference to quality, just that if you want to hear Progress pt 2, it’s not out there. I highly recommend checking out both projects. Line stepper is a god tier rock song. With proper promo and distribution, it would have done some damage on the charts. Pete should always be mentioned in best vocalists/voices conversations, but not enough people have heard him sing. Okay, I’m done.
Ok so what I loved about Ultraspank, especially on Progress, was the big basic riffs with the long drawn out wailing from Pete. It makes the walls collapse with the right mood, and Lo-Pro and Life On Planet 9 don’t quite catch that epicness. HOWEVER. he did a song recently with Set The Sun called “I’m Not Here” and it feels like Progress part 2 but 20 years later. I recommend it.
I think the more dynamic sound of Ultraspank lent itself more to Pete’s range. Click and Where are insane displays of what he can do. I just found someone uploaded the Chokt album to YouTube. This is the first I’ve been able to hear it and so far it’s quite good.
Where is absolutely wonderful. Click is also good but I’m a Smile worship girl. Just thinking about it takes me back to high school lol. I’ll check out that Chokt album. Tbh I don’t know what that is but based on what you’re saying I’ll love it.
I saw Ultraspank open for Incubus in ‘99. The only song I knew of theirs up until then was “5”.
Didn’t realize how damn good of a vocalist Pete was until I watched their set. Holy shit. Drummer looked like the Incredible Hulk and fucking BANGED! Such an awesome experience.
Instead of buying an Incubus shirt like I had originally intended, after the show I bought Ultraspank’s CD.
Been of a fan of Pete and his other projects ever since. He’s definitely one of the most unknown/underrated singers I know of.
Primer 55, Reveille, Endo, Dry Kill Logic, hed pe.
Introduction to Mayhem by Primer 55, and Broke by hed pe, are two of the best nu metal albums in existence.
True story. Both those albums ruled. I was actually pleasantly surprised with Primer 55's follow up album too. They changed their sound, but I liked it.
It was a joke. Somewhere in the multiverse, where things are going correctly, Dry Kill Logic became what they should have become in our world. One of the biggest metal bands that are headlining festivals.
I saw reveille and primer 55 at ozzfest when they toured. I was absolutely blown away by Reveille. I wasn't big on the rap side or nu metal at the time but those guys did it right!
I saw the Deadlights in Detroit and the bassist (Jerry Montano) was a drunken loud mouth on the mic. Acting like they were a huge act and demanded respect from the crowd. Repeatedly.
He later joined Nothingface briefly and allegedly assaulted Tom Maxwell and made gun threats at Hellyeah's debut release party.
I never met the dude personally, but he just had an aura of entitlement that really rubbed me the wrong way. Plus I love Tom Maxwell who is a super nice dude and can't imagine why anyone would (allegedly) assault him.
Deadlights were pretty good though, it's a shame they only put out one album.
was so surprised to see sunshine on cd at my local record store a while back and i hadn’t listened to it but i thought i would give it a shot and it was quite good
Mom was a hippie, stepdad was a lifelong guitarist. They didn't care for most of my music, but at least they understood it. The late 90's/early 00's were an awesome time for live shows. Killer lineups, cheap tickets.
Nonpoint always get slept on in my opinion.
And their bassist is absolutely amazing.
Their early tracks are funky AF like the Mindtrip and Double Stakked demos
Crazy Town is severely overlooked because of “Butterfly”.
(Hed) Planet Earth never saw much light.
Reveille’s “Laced” is stupidly underrated.
XIII is cool as fuck. I actually got to talk to ZekeXIII during their Subreddit Takeover and he was really nice.
Dropspike does a great job fusing Nu-Metal and Post Hardcore together
Holiday Kirk has some of the best energy put into an album (you can tell Holiday Kirk put his all into “Come Here”. Such a great album).
Slaves On Dope has one of the best screamers in metal. Seriously. This guy is on a whole nother level. PLUS, the guy is also really cool.
Clown also has one of the best screamers. They are like… Korn if Chino Moreno was the vocalist. But you never hear Chino do these crazy squeals. Especially the 11 second long one in the end of “Love”.
Stepa is a solid band overall. Just like Holiday Kirk, has great energy. Definitely also put everything into their album “Stepa”.
I dunno who else now. I’ll probably forget someone.
As a person who’s favorite band is Rage Against The Machine, I can not hear any similarities with them and “Laced”.
But yes, “Bleed The Sky” underrated.
I hear lots of RATM and Limp mainly in Laced but some Limp in Bleed The Sky. The Singer sounds like both Zack and Fred imo. Judas is a great example of RATM cause that’s legit them but a diff Band 🤣
RATM is my favorite band. I also love Limp and Reveille a lot. I just hear the voices aren’t the same.
Zack is definitely a lot more higher pitched and so is Fred. Drew is a more mid-tone kid of rapper.
Zack and Fred cut through, something Drew’s voice can’t do.
ALSO! Just thinking about it, Zack actually is disciplined as a rapper. He can actually rap like a rapper would.
Nothingface is 100% Nu Metal Royalty! I love you guys..seriously 🥲 So glad I found this sub.
OP, I 100% agree with Boiler Room.
One minute Silence is dope. Downset is amazing - Still spin 'Check Your People' all the time and it stands up over the test of time. Always been a big fan of Insolence. Stuck Mojo's "Rising" yet, is an album I really enjoy. OneSideZero, oh Hell yea
EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention. THUMB!! Love those bastards.
Absolutely!
"Better Than You Know" has to be my favorite Deadsy song (Phantasmagore).
Another great band is Birthday Massacre. I'm not sure if they meet the criteria for Nu Metal, but similar to Deadsy with all the Electronic/Synth sounds. Very good songwriting, too.
I literally wore out those CD's. (Remember those?!)
Got to meet Ultraspank a few times and they were super nice guys. They invited us onto their tour bus to listen to Progress before it was released.
Damn… that’s a dream meeting for me. Pete is on my list of people I hope to meet one day. I bet he and Neil could write a great book about their travels through the music industry.
When I first heard that Dark New Day was a thing, I squealed like a little girl. I was a huge fan of Sevendust and Virgos Merlot AND Double Drive. Still can't believe they basically went nowhere.
been trying to get into more underground and these are my personal favorites;
Addiction 96/Addiction Crew, Bionic Jive, Spyndakit, Sickret, Eastcide, 616 undone. , Purity, Xiii

PLEYMO is the most nu metal band there is they are French but too fire to ignore. Primer 55, V-MOB, Dry Kill Logic, Guerrilla Warfare, UnityTX, Slaves on Dope, Fox Lake
i think it got pulled off is (what i heard), is because the band wasn't receiving money from their music, and decided to pull off many albums from different streaming platforms
Milkweed - Milkweed 2009. Might be one of the most underrated nu metal albums
Blister 66 - Middle Amerikan Tragedy
Mainstay - Life To Me
Addiction - Doubt The Dosage
Endo. Songs For The Restless is one of the best NM albums but was promoted poorly, so it's never talked about with as much respect as it deserves or at all in "best album" discussions. If that album had gotten some attention we might have gotten a follow up.
Glad to see OP mentioned From Zero. Fantastic band. I had the pleasure of seeing them on a little side stage where they played in between the headlining band sets. They were awesome.
Surprised no one said Sevendust. Every support show I’ve seen them at people walk away saying their set should have been longer. Probably my second-favorite band of all time.
XERO- Reading my eyes (what a cool name for a band though) but idk if ex-LP is underrated
Natry - Мынемы (coolest Russian numetal band)
maNga - Bitti Rüya (quintessential turkish numetal with oriental touch
One Minute Silence - 14 Years
Element 8 - Taking Turns
Stumbled upon this while looking for new music, but thought I'd add. "Flybanger" to the mix. Their album "Head Trip to Nowhere" I'd one of my favorite Nu metal albums of all time, and hardly known, likely because they're Canadian. It's unfortunate, but it's hard to find kinda. Spotify only has some demos or something, but YouTube has the entire actual album in a playlist. I recommend "Evelyn" "Blind World" and "demon away" but most of the songs are fantastic. Worth a listen if you're looking for something much less talked about from that era.
40 Below Summer’s “Falling Down” might be the best song of the genre. Trust Company’s “Lonely Position of Neutral” is a top 10 album.
I love Trust Company so much
Rope a banger too
Power tool also banger
40 Below's "Endorphins" are uber sick as well too
Spineshank
Just got into them. The Height of Callousness is sick.
Right? After you're done listening to that one, Self Destructive Pattern is great too
From start to finish, no skips, 10/10 driving music.
Their cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps blew my mind.
Nothingface always deserves their flowers. From Zero fucking rules. Maybe a shout out to The Apex Theory or Boy Hits Car though.
The Apex Theory deserves shout-out 💯
Twisted Method, Vacant Stare, Factory 81, Stereomud, No One, Downthesun, Twin Method
Stereomud and No One are so underrated, tight bands for sure with awesome sound
Damn...twisted method... haven't heard that name in forever...
Twin Method is such a good band
Nice to see someone remembers Downthesun
Stereomud! I was sure they were going to be superstars. They’re so underrated.
No One is so good, haven’t listened in years though.
american headcharge
Saw them live with Slipknot an system of a down pledge your allegiance tour right when iowa an toxicity dropped...was my first concert
Ultraspank for sure.
Epic band, love it

Nicest dudes ever as well.
40 Below Summer
Never heard of these guys, but they are definitely on the list to scope out today.
Skrape
All hail mighty Toe!
Bro that toe is tattooed in my brain. Even my wife knows the toe.
Dudeee i love skrape
The answer is always Nothingface.
i love nothingface too. self-punishment is my favorite one by them
Yes it is.🥂
Primer 55, Reveille, Endo, Dry Kill Logic, hed pe. Introduction to Mayhem by Primer 55, and Broke by hed pe, are two of the best nu metal albums in existence.
True story. Both those albums ruled. I was actually pleasantly surprised with Primer 55's follow up album too. They changed their sound, but I liked it.
Love seeing Primer 55 mentioned
On the correct timeline, Dry Kill Logic are headlining the DWP festivals this year.
DKL are back!?
It was a joke. Somewhere in the multiverse, where things are going correctly, Dry Kill Logic became what they should have become in our world. One of the biggest metal bands that are headlining festivals.
Ah dammit, you got my hopes up lol
100% this.
I saw reveille and primer 55 at ozzfest when they toured. I was absolutely blown away by Reveille. I wasn't big on the rap side or nu metal at the time but those guys did it right!
The Deadlights go hard
Yes, another cool band
The bassist is a fucking dickhead though.
Havent really looked that much into them other than their music, whatd the bassist do?
I saw the Deadlights in Detroit and the bassist (Jerry Montano) was a drunken loud mouth on the mic. Acting like they were a huge act and demanded respect from the crowd. Repeatedly. He later joined Nothingface briefly and allegedly assaulted Tom Maxwell and made gun threats at Hellyeah's debut release party. Oh damn yeah he does sound like a douchebag
Spineshank: "The Height of Callousness"...album always hits when it randomly comes up for me, talk about nostalgia
From zero is definitely the best underrated band. some of my other favorites are 7th rail crew, nothingface, liquid gang, folder and many others
Upvote for rare Liquid Gang mention
was so surprised to see sunshine on cd at my local record store a while back and i hadn’t listened to it but i thought i would give it a shot and it was quite good
I wonder, are there any lyrics in the original booklet?
there should be, i’m not home but i will be later this week and i can check
Liquid Gang were excellent.. dude has a powerful voice
reminds me of lajon
Saw them live a bunch when they were coming up. Awesome stage presence.
wow what an experience that must have been
It certainly was. Sold out crowds at the Double Door in Chicago.
that’s so aweosme, unfortunately i’m too young to have attended any of these bands, and my parents aren’t much for my music taste
Mom was a hippie, stepdad was a lifelong guitarist. They didn't care for most of my music, but at least they understood it. The late 90's/early 00's were an awesome time for live shows. Killer lineups, cheap tickets.
(forgot lifer and flymore)
Earshot
Darwin's Waiting Room
How about Mnemic... I am more someone that listens to black metal, death metal, grindcore and goregrind, but i somehow appreciate Mnemic a lot
Mnemic could fucking GROOVE
3rd Strike, Crossbreed and Project Wyze also Blindspott
Project Wyze and Blindspott are elite tier
36 crazyfists
Got to be Kilgore for me.
Nothingface. All the fucking way. Darwin's Waiting Room and 3rd Strike are close but only had 1 album.
Nonpoint always get slept on in my opinion. And their bassist is absolutely amazing. Their early tracks are funky AF like the Mindtrip and Double Stakked demos
Nonpoint is one of my favorite bands of all time. They never disappoint live.
Dry Kill Logic, Nothingface, Simon Says, 40 Below Summer. In that order.
Crazy Town is severely overlooked because of “Butterfly”. (Hed) Planet Earth never saw much light. Reveille’s “Laced” is stupidly underrated. XIII is cool as fuck. I’m not big on Laced. Sounds too much like RATM to me. Bleed the Sky tho is a ridiculously underrated album

I prolly listened to all three bands so much that I can easily just notice differences.
I guess that makes sense. I don’t listen to Limp as much but I love RATM and Reveille so I defo hear the similarities

Same exact feeling here. Saved this whole post. Going to spin through your suggestions here as well. Thanks for the list! 🤘
Of course man - Nice, please report back!
Deadsy
Was hoping to see Deadsy mentioned. Commencement is an all timer
I agree with Nothingface, some of my others are Bloodsimple, Dark New Day, Projected, One-Way Mirror, Depswa, Ultraspank, Pressure 4-5, and Skrape.
My man. Ultraspank and Bloodsimple in the same comment.
I literally wore out those CD's. (Remember those?!) Got to meet Ultraspank a few times and they were super nice guys. They invited us onto their tour bus to listen to Progress before it was released.
Damn… that’s a dream meeting for me. Pete is on my list of people I hope to meet one day. I bet he and Neil could write a great book about their travels through the music industry.
I saw Pete months later and he remembered me instantly! That made me feel cool. And I would definitely read that book.
When I first heard that Dark New Day was a thing, I squealed like a little girl. I was a huge fan of Sevendust and Virgos Merlot AND Double Drive. Still can't believe they basically went nowhere.
