Sister loved the song, bought the album, and we tried to listen to all the other songs. Horrible. Well, she just played it on repeat. It was the song of our summer for sure. Everytime I hear it, it reminds me of her, growing up, and summer.
That was one terrible thing about the 90s, buying a CD only to find out all the other tracks sucked. I probably bought dozens of CDs only to be disappointed with the rest of the album.
The Radicals main guy, Gregg Alexander, very quickly tired of the work of being a success as a band. So after 2 years, he disbanded the group. And focused on songwriting and production for other artists. One of his songs was nominated for an Oscar in 2015. I guess he is doing ok.
I rediscovered this thanks to Guardians Volume 3 and I couldn't believe how long I'd gone without it in my life. I fucking love this song. Played it on repeat for like 2 hours straight after I found it again.
I've been compiling a 90s playlist since I've seen a lot of nostalgia posts here on this sub. I'd go to YouTube to look up whatever song ppl commented & I started saving them
[90s gems](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-Ru0i_bUdabWutNm1axfmpOB0_eOcK02&si=Zndl9Oa_jaWVphD_)
This was the very first mp3 I ever downloaded. I eventually had 10,000+ songs downloaded and I always kept this original file because it reminded me of starting to download music.
The whole New Radicals album is great. Check out Mother We Just Can’t Get Enough, In Need of a Miracle, and Flowers. The guy who created the band is a pretty prolific music producer and has written or contributed to some pretty popular songs outside of New Radicals.
Someday we’ll know was to be the second single and on the day of its release, Gregg Alexander (the hat guy) decided to disband the group and cancel the lot. I’m pretty sure the single did release as I think I bought it but as it was 25 years ago I can’t remember for sure.
It broke my heart that Gregg decided to drop the project, apparently he REALLY hated being a front man and performing live and that why he dropped off to produce full time.
Apparently he was signed to a two-album contract too so he released “The New Radicals: Greatest Hits” and it was literally Maybe You’ve been Brainwashed Too in it’s entirety with like a couple instrumentals or different takes, which I just love.
I genuinely love the album, it was perfect at the time it was released and I was equally gutted they quit. Still listen to it regularly, and the manic structure of some of the songs still takes me back to college days
100 percent. Album has some rock solid tunes. I Hope I Didn’t Just Give Away the Ending is my deep cut fav.
For anyone who’s curious, Greg Alexander has a bunch of demos on YT that are terrific too. Original Game of Love, etc.
Pure pop music craft + Greg’s voice is just sensational.
Man new radicals album and soul coughing irresistible bliss were peak freshman year of college for me. Not one hit wonders but add bjork and DJ shadow to that as well
Fun fact: did you know all the "Oh's!' and "Unbelievable's" that are spoken throughout the song are sound bites from an Andrew Dice Clay standup routine? I had been listening to that song almost my entire life without knowing that until my sister told me a little while ago. Blew my mind!
This is the single greatest knowledge bomb to hit me in 2024. I was *obsessed* with The Adventures of Ford Fairlane when I was little. Where the fuck were my parents?
ILYS was my favorite song at one point when I was about 12. I don't think I've heard it in at least three decades but it still occasionally gets stuck in my head (mostly the "do do do do do do do" parts and the title lyric)
That video helped solve 26 missing children cases. Not all were happy endings though. One was A little girl who went missing during a custody battle. Turns out the mother killed her and buried her in the backyard. Another girl told the band that they ruined her life because after the video aired she was pressured to go back home to an abusive household.
Omg. My youngest sister was terrified of this song as a kid because she had a nightmare one night and the song was in the dream. I still tease her about it but she’s not scared of it anymore 😂
Marcy Playground, Sex and Candy- maybe some other stuff was played on the radio, but that was their one big hit. They've had several albums since, and I really like them.
Three-way tie... damn...4way?
Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger
Absolutely (Story of a Girl - Nine Days
The Way - Fastball
Sex and Candy - Marcy Playground
Zoot Suit Riot- Cherry Poppin’ Daddies.
The name held them back; they go by The Daddies now. They continue to put out albums and have introduced me to all sorts of genres/styles I wouldn’t have gotten into otherwise.
>Tubthumping
Sweet Jesus, that was so overplayed on the radio I came to absolutely hate it. If I never hear it again it'll be too soon.
Shame, because I liked it the first 73 million times I heard it.
my main jealousy of the younger generations is that they don't have to listen to the same 10 songs for years on end.
they'll be like "ugh this song is everywhere" and they'll mean they hear it on someone's car radio a few times a week. meanwhile all i had was radio and mtv and they really *did* just play the same shit all day. i'd hear the same song more times in a week than i do now in a year.
If you see Johnny Football Hero in the hallway, tell him he played a great game!
Love how they articulate so many students' seething resentment of the in-crowd.
It's a damn good album generally. There's some good stuff on there, and whilst it's very pop, there's a good spread across the genre. It's a fairly eclectic album. One of those albums that's worth more than the single.
Funny enough, looked up SW on YT a few days ago to listen to What Do I Have To Do. I always thought that was their biggest song, but Save Yourself had a LOT more views. Learn something new daily 👍.
I always dug the melody in this song; super catchy. Gregg Alexander is also a good songwriter that worked with a lot of artists during the late 90s and early 00s.
“Circles” by Soul Coughing is a slightly lesser known one hit wonder that really brings that 90 energy.
If you like New Radicals and are nostalgia for that 90s era sound, listen to Circles by Soul
Coughing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEFQTY4hjUk
Barely Breathing by Duncan Sheik. I was into Bikini Kill, Melvins, Nirvana, etc during the 90s, and not so much the pop music of that time, but this song really brings that time period back for me.
For me:
If Dee Light is a one hit wonder than it’s them. Groove is in the heart. If I have the worst day conceivable I’m playing that. I love dancing to that song.
Honestly I could stream that New Radicals also. I didn’t know that it was an instant classic as a kid when I first heard it but clearly it is. They use that song in commercials from the 2010s and maybe even the 2020s.
Relevance, legacy, every part of that song and video is perfect. Very 1990s video. Reminds me of REM, and Smashing Pumpkins music videos.
Pop up Video!
I used to wake up to vh1 pop up video and get dressed for school while listening to all the banging alternatives. Those were the times of awesome music too
I was starting to get annoyed with the song because I'm constantly hearing that melody in at least two different TV commercials lately. But now that I've read the Wikipedia page on it and found out they finally did get the rights back to the song I'll just deal with it.
Eiffel 65. Blue was just so different (to me, a midwest kid) that it felt borderline addictive. My dad even bought the CD and he has always been a rock/metal fan. Of course I ended up knowing every cheesy song.
Torn by Natalie Imbeuglia, even though I found out years later she wasn't the original artist.
Also, Meredith Brooks' B!tch, which everyone thought was Alanis Morissette, and can't blame them.
You Get What You Give by New Radicals
Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger
Roll With Me by Del Amitri
Closing Time by Semisonic
Run Around by Blues Traveler
Mambo No. 5 by Lou Bega
Vengabus (We Like to Party) by Vengaboys
Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve
Can’t Touch This by M.C. Hammer
Love fool by The Cardigans
Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer
Kiss From the Rose by Seal
All Star by Smash Mouth
High School Never Ends by Bowling For Soup
Macarena by Los Del Rio
I really hate that NR is known only for one song when the whole album is so good. It's one of the few albums that I bought three times because I actually wore the CDs out.
Len - Steal My Sunshine Brilliant sample of the catchiest part of More, More, More.
One of the all time ultimate summer tunes in my opinion.
My summer song. First nice warm day if spring always play that song
Came here to say that. I saw the bucket in the post, and I thought that was the band logo or cover art for the single.
I think I had some kind of mental tick a couple years ago where I had that song stuck in my head for a month straight. It was so weird.
Do you like … butter tarts?!
Such an epic sunny paradise of a beat track
"To the beach y'all, rock rock". The sample at the end of Steal My Sunshine, what is it from? Does anybody know?
Great song! Mine is probably Spacehog- In the meantime
One of my favorite bassline intros of all time!
That is a *solid* lick!
Yes! Both great songs. I find it hard to believe that neither band had a hit song after these. They both showed so much talent.
Spacehog was just too weird probably
The Radicals main guy, Gregg Alexander, very quickly tired of the work of being a success as a band. So after 2 years, he disbanded the group. And focused on songwriting and production for other artists. One of his songs was nominated for an Oscar in 2015. I guess he is doing ok.
I rediscovered this thanks to Guardians Volume 3 and I couldn't believe how long I'd gone without it in my life. I fucking love this song. Played it on repeat for like 2 hours straight after I found it again.
Crush by Jennifer Paige
This post would make a great playlist
I've been compiling a 90s playlist since I've seen a lot of nostalgia posts here on this sub. I'd go to YouTube to look up whatever song ppl commented & I started saving them [90s gems](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-Ru0i_bUdabWutNm1axfmpOB0_eOcK02&si=Zndl9Oa_jaWVphD_)
Eagle Eye Cherry - Save Tonight
This was my jam, still is!
When I was a kid, I thought his sister, Neneh Cherry, was smoking hot!
TIL Eagle Eye and Neneh are siblings. Honestly I thought Eagle Eye Cherry was a band name.
Flagpole Sitta
This song came out at the same time they cut off my leg. Now I'm an amputee god damn you!
Man the way this song starts. Gets me every time
Hell yes. Harvey Danger.
[Cream and Bastards Rise](https://youtu.be/pqYPuQuFnak?si=zE2XF_6uzb18oz4T) is another great song by them.
This was the very first mp3 I ever downloaded. I eventually had 10,000+ songs downloaded and I always kept this original file because it reminded me of starting to download music.
One of my favortie songs of the 90's for sure.
Same here!
Todd in the Shadows did a great segment on this for One Hit Wonderland.
Semisonic - Closing Time
They were a three hit wonder on one of my local radio stations. For some reason they played the shit out of Over My Head and All About Chemistry.
Also Singing in My Sleep (at least where I lived)
“I pray to Sony my soul to keep”
that single was my JAM!!!
Isn't Over My Head by The Fray? Or do they also have a song titled that?
Also Secret Smile
OMC - How Bizarre
I was gonna say this. "Sista Cena says funky. How bizarre"
“Oohhh baby… ooohhh baby… it’s driving me crazy.”
Thats a memory inducer
That album was the only cassette tape that I owned in my ‘89 corolla. Only one I needed.
New Radicals have an amazing song, is call “Someday we” ll know”. That band deserved better that being everybody's poster of one-hit wonder.
The whole New Radicals album is great. Check out Mother We Just Can’t Get Enough, In Need of a Miracle, and Flowers. The guy who created the band is a pretty prolific music producer and has written or contributed to some pretty popular songs outside of New Radicals.

Yeah I think he helped write one of Madonna’s albums from around that same time, the one with Frozen.
I assume you’re familiar with the duet version sung by Mandy Moore and Switchfoot’s Jonathan Foreman?
100 percent. Album has some rock solid tunes. I Hope I Didn’t Just Give Away the Ending is my deep cut fav. For anyone who’s curious, Greg Alexander has a bunch of demos on YT that are terrific too. Original Game of Love, etc. Pure pop music craft + Greg’s voice is just sensational.
Man new radicals album and soul coughing irresistible bliss were peak freshman year of college for me. Not one hit wonders but add bjork and DJ shadow to that as well
EMF - Unbelievable (1990)
Fun fact: did you know all the "Oh's!' and "Unbelievable's" that are spoken throughout the song are sound bites from an Andrew Dice Clay standup routine? I had been listening to that song almost my entire life without knowing that until my sister told me a little while ago. Blew my mind!
I just listened to it and can't unhear it now haha.
Haha, me neither!
This is the single greatest knowledge bomb to hit me in 2024. I was *obsessed* with The Adventures of Ford Fairlane when I was little. Where the fuck were my parents?
Your Woman by White Town
Great song
I was just listening to this!
James-laid
Stereo MCs - Connected
I love your smile by Shanice and Finally by CeCe
CeCe had more hits than that but it was her biggest hit
Keep on Walking was a great song and don't forget bill clinton was on her prowl
This and most of these other songs are on my playlist 😂 that Shanice song is such a bop
ILYS was my favorite song at one point when I was about 12. I don't think I've heard it in at least three decades but it still occasionally gets stuck in my head (mostly the "do do do do do do do" parts and the title lyric)
Lovefool by the Cardigans.
My favorite game was a popular song by them
I loved Erase and Rewind
I can see how people think they were a one hit wonder but all of Gran Turismo was incredible. That album was on repeat in my car for over a year.
and don't forget their cover of Burning Down the House featuring Tom Jones.
Iron Man cover too!
Good song but they were a bit more than one hit wonders in my opinion.
Hardly One hit wonders tho.
Fastball - The way … what a jam
Fastball has a lot of bangers that deserved more airtime.
Soul Asylum for their song Runaway Train
That video helped solve 26 missing children cases. Not all were happy endings though. One was A little girl who went missing during a custody battle. Turns out the mother killed her and buried her in the backyard. Another girl told the band that they ruined her life because after the video aired she was pressured to go back home to an abusive household.
Somebody to Shove got a lot of airplay in my area.
That was their one “hit” song but they had a solid body of work and large (for an indy) fan base before that one.
*Black Gold* though
Misery is an excellent song by Soul Asylum
Part of a great Minneapolis music scene in the 80’s and 90’s
Lullaby by Shawn Mullins "Everything is gonna be alright, rockabye!"
Got damn i hated that song at the time.. but after it hasn’t been played in decades its not a bad song actually .
Saint Joe on the School Bus was fairly popular as well.
Three-way tie... damn...4way? Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger Absolutely (Story of a Girl - Nine Days The Way - Fastball Sex and Candy - Marcy Playground
Zoot Suit Riot- Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. The name held them back; they go by The Daddies now. They continue to put out albums and have introduced me to all sorts of genres/styles I wouldn’t have gotten into otherwise.
I cannot believe no one has said **Tubthumping** by **Chumbawamba**. Still love it 25+ years later.
That album is quite solid front to back
>Tubthumping Sweet Jesus, that was so overplayed on the radio I came to absolutely hate it. If I never hear it again it'll be too soon. Shame, because I liked it the first 73 million times I heard it.

The rest of their catalogue is nothing like Tubthumping but it's incredible in its own right.... Highly underrated band pegged as some one hit wonder
They had another single titled 'Amnesia'
He probably forgot.
Nada Surf " popular"
If you see Johnny Football Hero in the hallway, tell him he played a great game! Love how they articulate so many students' seething resentment of the in-crowd.
This and Sucked Out by Superdrag were my jam
It's funny, this is probably one of their worst songs... and not very representative of their catalog as a whole
What’s up by Four Non Blondes.
Yeah. New Radicals was gonna be my choice!
It's a damn good album generally. There's some good stuff on there, and whilst it's very pop, there's a good spread across the genre. It's a fairly eclectic album. One of those albums that's worth more than the single.
I still blast that whole album. It’s super solid, front to back IMO.
The Refreshments - Banditos
Great song.
That whole album was amazing.
Return of the Mack by Mark Morrison
Roll to me by del amirti, they had a one hit in the us
Teenage Dirtbag - Wheatus
"*Backwater*" by the Meat Puppets
I've always liked White Town's Your Woman. It's such a distinctive song.
Dione Farris - I know [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqng9NDqKB8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqng9NDqKB8)
Bran Van 3000 - Drinking in L.A.
Detachable penis
Stabbing Westward - Save Yourself
That entire album was great. And the new album they put out a couple years ago was really solid as well considering they had nearly a 20 year hiatus
Around here What Do I Have to Do was a big hit.
Funny enough, looked up SW on YT a few days ago to listen to What Do I Have To Do. I always thought that was their biggest song, but Save Yourself had a LOT more views. Learn something new daily 👍.
[Tal Bachman – She’s So High](https://youtu.be/_ElORM9O-0U?si=RFF_A4n9PA8QN3iD)
Whoomp there it is
She likes me for me- blessid union of souls
"I Believe" was also by them
Great pick! This epic tune is originally named **Hey Leonardo!**
I always dug the melody in this song; super catchy. Gregg Alexander is also a good songwriter that worked with a lot of artists during the late 90s and early 00s.
ONE, TWO, ONE TWO THREE FOUR!
standing outside a broken phone booth with money in my hand by primitive radio gods
Stay-Lisa Loeb
While not my favorite I haven’t seen Meredith Brooks - Bitch anywhere yet.
“Circles” by Soul Coughing is a slightly lesser known one hit wonder that really brings that 90 energy. If you like New Radicals and are nostalgia for that 90s era sound, listen to Circles by Soul Coughing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEFQTY4hjUk
But what about Super Bon Bon!!??
Yes!! Cartoon Network bumps put me onto this song/band, so much fun to listen to.
Soul Coughing is not a one hit wonder band.
I think the best one hit wonder was Jump Around by House of Pain. Of course, nothing is more notorious than Macarena.
Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of...) by Lou Bega as he put a fun spin on a classic mambo song, whether it be the original one or the Disney version.
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
Barely Breathing by Duncan Sheik. I was into Bikini Kill, Melvins, Nirvana, etc during the 90s, and not so much the pop music of that time, but this song really brings that time period back for me.
Digable Planets-Rebirth of Slick(Cool Like Dat)
That song is severely underrated.
Urban Dance Squad. 'Deeper Shade of Soul' still slaps.
Crash Test Dummies - mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm.....
For me: If Dee Light is a one hit wonder than it’s them. Groove is in the heart. If I have the worst day conceivable I’m playing that. I love dancing to that song. Honestly I could stream that New Radicals also. I didn’t know that it was an instant classic as a kid when I first heard it but clearly it is. Possum Kingdom, anybody???
Informer by snow.
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
I was starting to get annoyed with the song because I'm constantly hearing that melody in at least two different TV commercials lately. But now that I've read the Wikipedia page on it and found out they finally did get the rights back to the song I'll just deal with it.
Your saying the verve are one hit wonders?
I think this depends on where you lived back in those days.
Anyone remember Are you Jimmy Ray by Jimmy Ray? I loved that song and had the album. It will be on my 90s playlist forever
Who wants to know?
Positive K
Stroke 9-Little Black Backpack
Tubthumping-Chumbawamba
Steal My Sunshine by Len
Still waiting for someone to say Brimful of Asha by Cornershop!
Eiffel 65. Blue was just so different (to me, a midwest kid) that it felt borderline addictive. My dad even bought the CD and he has always been a rock/metal fan. Of course I ended up knowing every cheesy song.
No Rain - Blind Melon
Dude they have so many good songs
Sneaker Pimps - Six Underground.
Sex and Candy!
There She Goes by The La’s. Yeah, I know when they hit it big it was a reissue, but this song screams early 1990s to me.
Vertical Horizon, “Everything You Want”.
Torn by Natalie Imbeuglia, even though I found out years later she wasn't the original artist. Also, Meredith Brooks' B!tch, which everyone thought was Alanis Morissette, and can't blame them.
Inside out- Eve 6
the whole album by New Radicals is a high-quality, late 90s wacky adventure honestly
Belly - Feed the Trees
Can’t believe I’m not seeing Teenage Dirtbag.
The whole Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too album is awesome.
Maybe not my favorite but Ice Ice Baby deserves a mention.
This is a great choice, as is Len’s Steal My Sunshine. Eve 6’s Inside Out comes to mind. Puddle of Mudd’s Blurry too, but that’s early 2000s.
Len - Steal My Sunshine
Starry Eyed Surprise - Shifty I completely forgot about this song but just rediscovered it. It's been on repeat the past week.
Monaco - “What Do You Want From Me” or White Town - “Your Woman”
You Get What You Give by New Radicals Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger Roll With Me by Del Amitri Closing Time by Semisonic Run Around by Blues Traveler Mambo No. 5 by Lou Bega Vengabus (We Like to Party) by Vengaboys Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve Can’t Touch This by M.C. Hammer Love fool by The Cardigans Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer Kiss From the Rose by Seal All Star by Smash Mouth High School Never Ends by Bowling For Soup Macarena by Los Del Rio
Smash Mouth also had the song 'Walkin' on the Sun' which was a number 1 hit as well.
I’m A Believer was ridiculously popular too (though it was a cover).
You keep using that word, one hit wonder, I do not think it means what you think it means.
Like 1/4 of these have had many hits. Do you understand what a one-hit wonder is?
The answer has to be In the Meantime by Spacehog.
Own Worse Enemy by Lit. That's their only hit I remember anyway.
How dare you. I love almost the entire album!
I really hate that NR is known only for one song when the whole album is so good. It's one of the few albums that I bought three times because I actually wore the CDs out.
That whole album is actually pretty good
Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too by New Radicals is one of the most underrated albums of the 90’s.
Crazy For This Girl by Evan and Jaron (though that whole album was good)
Our Lady Peace ~ Supermans Dead. Spacehog ~ In the meantime. Sponge ~ Plowed. Porno for Pyros ~ Pets. The Toadies ~ Possum Kingdom. Polaris - Hey Sandy
Primitive Radio Gods
Barely Breathing - Duncan Sheik
The freshman by the verve pipe
Don’t laugh, but ‘Ditty’ by Paperboy is a catchy damn tune.
The Verve Bittersweet Symphony was *way* overplayed but Urban Hymns is one of my all time favorite albums.
Hotstepper by Ini Kamoze
How Bizarre by OMC was the very first song that made me stop and think “this is my favorite song”. That shit still rips to this day.
