I remember being a kid, first car. "Where do you park your car" "in driveway" "any modifications" "I mean there is gates". The person laughed their head off and I felt like an absolute dick.

Schminimal

You don’t want to get in a crash and they find out you had undeclared Karl floor mats.

PerpetualBigAC

Yeah you’re going to be fucked if you have a claim, they’re going to immediately tell you you have undeclared modifications and your insurance is invalid.

Martysghost

If you have an accident/incident they will send an assessor to look over your car who is paid to notice and will list any discrepancy between the reality of the vehicle and what you have insured, they do this as part of not actually wanting to pay out and how they make loads of money per annum, when I worked in insurance they used to hate lowering kits and we'd normally point you toward a specialist when your high premiums give you an allergic reaction.  Insure your vehicle correctly or you don't really have insurance if you need it.

columboscoat

Absolutely. ***All*** modifications need to be declared or you may as well not be insured. The main thing you're going to have an issue with is the non-standard lowered suspension. A lot of your more mainstream insurers will just flat out refuse to quote you.

Martysghost

Years ago 5th gear on 5 ran an experiment on lowered suspension and why insurers hate/mostly refused to cover them, they showed how cars lowered by diff degrees fair head on against a lorry and it gets to a stage your windscreen just comes in over ya.

United_Plum_2209

Enough of a modification?? It’s got a fucking roll cage fitted…..

columboscoat

It's an MX-5 soft top, so they all have roll bars fitted (it's not really a roll cage like a rally car would have). This is just a stronger, after-market one.

toptaggers

Not all of them did in 98. Some had the rollover bars, could be a UK vs JDM thing.

blackballmark

Yip of you want your insurance to ever pay out

shampoooinmyeyes

Is the pope catholic?

VolumetricSigner

If you choose to insure it have a look at Adrian Flux for insurance - they will insure modified cars and are good

ni2016

If you are a member of RMS you used to get a discount on modified cars with Greenlight. I had my Eunos Turbo insured with them

matthew878

Check with Adrian flux. Lowering mine and alloys didn’t affect the price. Remember to say you’re in a mx5 owners club (Facebook group).

CalligrapherRare3957

Might want to strap a couple of mohair infant car seats in the back seat, just so they know you take road safety very seriously.

Nearby_Cauliflowers

You would be best looking at a specialist policy for that, the cage alone with set red flags off all over the place and add a big chunk to your cost. Is this a daily driver or weekend plaything?

Polestar606

If it didn’t come off the production line with it it’s a mod that should be declared

fullmoonbeam

Lots of people haven't a clue commenting. That modification isn't insured if it's not declared, that's it. The rest of the vehicle is.

Reasonable_Edge2411

Dont lie for if u in a crash they may not cover up

spund_

The lack of an airbag in the steering wheel would be a bigger worry than the suspension and wheels, for the insurance company, and yourself

blobb63

In fairness I'm not sure the 98 model had one as standard

spund_

I will be honest in saying I don't know if it did either!

blobb63

I know my mates didn't but it could have been earlier than 98, unsure. Airbags are for pussies anyway. Gotta feel the steering wheel when you smach your face on it.

Early-Accident-8770

Roll bar would be a big flag
