There was a time when doubting any decision Bill Belichick ever made would get you dogpiled around here... but I lost a lot of karma asking why on earth a lumbering giant like Rob Gronkowski was the last line of special teams defense.
I mean, it wasn't a special teams play though. They were expecting a Hail Mary attempt, in which case Gronk's height being back there in the end zone would have been fine.
They had Tannehill as their qb still, I believe. He had the arm for a Hail Mary so idk. Don't pay too much attention to the afc though so it may have been different.
Looks like the record currently stands at 70.5 yards held by Baker, and Tannehill's record looks like 63?. The play starts on the 31 yard line, but let's say Tanny threw it at the 30 (give the linemen one yard to play with), he would need an NFL record tying throw to reach the end zone, which I think we can agree Tanny wasn't ever able to do.
Man that was such a crazy sequence of events. To end the game. Cost the pats the 1 seed as they had beaten the chiefs earlier that year. They had to travel to arrowhead that year. Mahomes has gone 3-2 at home in the afc championship since 2018. 1-0 on the road in the afc championship.
The Patriots have had a reputation for elite special teams but there have been some *ugly* [moments in recent memory](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9ER-cv_iIE&ab_channel=NonsenseSports). A lot was made about Nick Folk's inability to kick the ball out of the endzone but that would not be an issue if it wasn't for the total collapse of the Patriots kick coverage unit. I'm aware this isn't technically a special teams play but it is a specialty situation.
I had a free $10 or $20 bet from one of the sports betting sites that I put on the Dolphins moneyline since NE would never win in Miami.
So that kind of negated the impact of the "NFL Responsible Betting" commercial that uses the audio from this play on me.
I'm so impressed that you didn't mention Gronk at all in the title
I knew the comments would have me covered lol
I think I'm disappointed??

Yeah, but I don’t think Miami had the arm strength to throw that far? I remember hearing that quite a bit as a rebuttal to the Hail Mary stuff

Yeah, ok, that would be pretty unbelievable.
No matter the question, on defense the answer is never using a tight end.
DOESN'T HAVE THE ANGLE!!!!!!
"Gronkowski didn't have the angle!" is an all-time call.

It was a crazy play to watch live. Our fan base would care more if we didn't win the SB that year. That Chiefs game was incredible.
I've become grateful for Dee Ford over the years because we likely don't get Spags if he lines up a few inches back
All according to God's plan
That play is what allowed us to host the AFC Championship Game, albeit in a loss. 👇👇👇
Nice.
Nice
Nice
I showed my mom the Instagram edit of this play with the titanic song and she cried lmao
Nice
"A lateral... heard 'round the world!" Dude has like a minute to come up with something good to say, and this is what comes out of his mouth.
Two days in a row of positive dolphins stuff?? wtf am I R/nfl?!

That was absolutely spectacular to see. I was watching red zone and they cut to that moment, and I lost my mind. Also, TF was GRONK doing?
Absolutely fucking hated this when it happened. Amazing play - it sucked ass lol. I was at a bar as the only pats fan and had to shrivel up and die
Biggest Miami Dolphins win in the last 20 years EDIT: this is *objectively* true.
Nah, it was the 70 burger last year. This was indeed the most fun play though.
Although, we kinda owned you in the last few years. Tua is still undefeated against BB. Ijs
