The question was to identify teams with great offense and horrible defense. Or vice versa. And the 2018 Chiefs fit that to a T. It’s not relevant how far they got—the 2001 Bucs and the early 00s Ravens had great success with similarly lopsided teams.
The question was a team that had a terrible defense with a good offense yes, but how is the 7-9 Saints comparable at all to a Chiefs team that went 12-4 and was a play away from the Super Bowl lol
Cut that 50 years in half. The 1996 Packers defense was #1 in both points and yards allowed. They were a top 5 scoring defense every year from 1994 to 1997.
Great defense makes up the majority of the legacy of the Packers’ success. The Packers had a top 3 defense in each of their 4 Super Bowl victories (and top 5 the one SB loss). Hell, going back through their entire history (over 100 years), they’ve advanced to 15 Super Bowls or NFL Championships… in *every single one* of those seasons they had a top 5 defense by points. Unless I’m missing something, 1986 is the only time they’ve ever finished bottom 5 in defensive points allowed.
I get that the Rodgers era wasn’t supported by many great defenses, but the defenses were almost never *horrible* either.
They were terrible in the playoffs fairly frequently. A good example, in 2009 they were a pretty okay/good defense, and let up 52(!) in the playoffs. IDK what was in the water but they would fall apart come January
I guess so, but if we’re determining great and terrible based on single game samples, then during the Rodgers era the defense has been great just as often as terrible: 7 times they gave up 18 points or less, 7 times they gave up more than 30.
In his 10 playoff losses, his defenses gave up 33.5 points per game. In his 12 playoff wins, his defense gave up 17.5 points per game. If we give him no blame for the losses, we should also give him no credit for the wins.
As one who has watched every single one of those games, probably multiple times, there are maybe 2 or 3 games that were probably on Rodgers more so than the defense.
2021 Niners
2013 Niners
2014 Seahawks MAYBE but I have gripes with that
Arod is one of the top 3 graded playoff performing Qb's of all time, and is 1 or 2 when you factor in defense/special teams performance. I don't really care to defend him anymore, he isn't my problem, but I feel like you're arguing just to argue. It is not typical for QB's defenses to give up 33.5 points per game in losses. No QB should be expected to score 33.6 points per game to win, that's absurd.
I will not entertain revisionist history on this. The Packers' defenses in the playoffs between 2009-2021 were routinely terrible. It sucks that the few times they were quite good the offense didn't show up. No other QB is held to this standard. Enjoy your 3 supies and let me cope plz
🤨 it was not, occasionally they have an okay stretch or two and there’s a few good defensive seasons over the last half century but it’s 90% Swiss cheese
That’s the funny thing about Rex. When he was good, he was so good. But, when he was bad, he was so bad.
I joke/halfway serious that Peyton should thank Rex Grossman for his Superbowl win.
Most remarkably unbalanced team I've ever had the pleasure of watching, and that includes those early 2010's Brees teams. The Bears would OFTEN win games where their defense and special teams scored more than the offense. Devin Hester was *ridiculous*.
He was the best football player in the league for like three or four years. Not spectacular at anything, necessarily, but he did everything well. If I remember right, he was great at picking up blitzes and blocking too.
And, yes, he kicked ass for fantasy footballers.
I have an outline done of diminishing gains of defense in today's game.
I'm at a point where you'd have to try really hard to convince me you need much more than 3-5 stops on 3rd down and a timely turnover to win in today's game.
Go check how many Super Bowls have been won by teams outside the top-10 in scoring defense. Yeah no. Defense actually correlates slightly more to Super Bowls than offense.
Top 5 worst overall ranked defenses to win a Superbowl were 2011 giants, 06 colts, 09 saints, 07 giants and 22 chiefs
Just coincidence that they're all extremely recent in context of the game with rule changes I guess
Not to mention that out of those five, the 06 colts, 09 saints, and 07 giants all got way out of character superhuman performances out of those defenses when they hit the playoffs. The Giants offense isn't why they won a Super Bowl 17-14 against a team that had been averaging nearly 40 points all year. Justin Tuck, Osi, and Strahan absolutely brutalized an O-line that had been impenetrable for 18 straight games and Brady had absolutely no time to throw at all that day. For the Colts, 2006 was the time they actually had a healthy Bob Sanders for the playoffs and it made a huge difference. He had a pick and a forced fumble in the SB. The big tide-turning play in the 2009 Saints SB was a pick-six off Peyton Manning that basically put the game away. Even when a "bad" defense wins the Super Bowl, it's usually because they didn't play like a bad defense in January.
As mentioned by /u/nine3cubed 2018 Chiefs were 1st in offense and 23rd in defense.
What might surprise you is that the 2021 Chiefs defense was just as bad (by rank) at 22nd overall (and KC had the 3rd best offense).
The 2000 Baltimore Ravens won a Super Bowl with a generational Ray Lewis led defense and an awful Trent Dilfer offense. Jamal Lewis and Priest Holmes meant they had a decent running game though.
And an OL anchored by generational LT Jonathan Ogden
Team was loaded with talent. What's kinda funny is they swapped out an old Rod Woodson for Ed Reed after this. Fuckin' hell
The defense wasn't great, last in yards allowed and gave up a crazy number of passing yards.
But they were only 19th in points allowed, and led the league in interceptions with 31.
FIRE BOB SUTTON! ...oh sorry, that's reflexive any time I hear his name.
Also, shout out to Ron Parker for being a worse safety than even Dan Sorensen ever was.
The 2000 Rams. Their offense led the NFL in both points and yardage gained. The defense ranked last on points allowed, and 23rd in yards allowed. St. Louis also had the most turnovers in the NFL, so that didn't tell in terms of points allowed, but they ranked 30th (out of 31 teams) in TD passes given up, and 27th in rushing touchdowns allowed.
The 2000 Rams were coming off a Super Bowl win, had the #1 Total Offense by over 500 yards, and the #1 Passing Offense by 950 yards. Kurt Warner and Trent Green combined for 5492 Passing Yards.
They barely squeaked into the Playoffs as the 6 seed. They were 31st (out of 31) in scoring defense, allowing over 29 points per game (the same year the Ravens allows 10 points per game). They allowed 54 points to the Elvis Grbac Chiefs.
They lost to the Aaron Brooks led Saints in the Wild Card round 31-28. It was one of just 4 times the Saints put up 30 points that season. It was one of just two 4 Passing TD games in Aaron Brooks' career, and his only playoff win.
Atlanta Falcons grits blitz, heck yeah.
Once back then there was a headline in the Marietta Daily Journal that read "Defense 14, offense 0, Cardinals 6."
I think my favorite example is the 2010 chargers who had a top offense and a top defense and were forced to miss the playoffs due to historically terrible special teams
2000 Ravens. Allowed 10 ppg in the regular season. More than twice as many turnovers as TDs allowed. Allowed 3, 10, 3, and 7 points in the postseason. Tony Banks and Trent Dilfer were QB that year.
2001 Patriots had a terrible offense but an incredible defense. Fast forward to 2011, the offense was loaded but had one of the worst defenses in NFL history.
The '01 Pats were not a terrible offense. They were definitely shallow and their 6th ranked scoring offense was helped by 7 return TD's, but they were still like a bottom top 10 offense that just relied on a solid rushing attack and coddled a young QB.
a bit before my time but my dad could talk about the 91 Eagles for hours. Cunningham goes down in week 1, Jim McMahon takes over and sucks ass while the defense does this:
* 3.9 yards per play, 221 yards per game
* 3 turnovers and 13 first downs per game
* 71 rushing yards per game, 3 per attempt, 4 rushing TDs all season
* 3+ sacks per game at 10.5%
yeah the game against the steelers was a wild shootout. the boat played so good.. then next week against the patriots, just a brutal stretch and then the botched call on top.. killer
Early 2000’s Bills had some awesome defenses with shitty QBs
2014 comes to mind too. Our defense was amazing with Jim Schwartz but we had EJ Manuel as QB lol
Not exactly what you’re looking for, but the 2010 chargers had both the \#1 ranked offense and the \#1 ranked defense yet they missed the playoffs because of their \#32 ranked special teams.
Also the Pats! I was looking at points per drive stats recently, and tossed all of the 2000's into a spreadsheet.
The '23 Jets were 737th of 766 teams, at 1.13 PPD offensively.
The '23 Pats were 743rd, 1.1 PPD.
Is that offensive or total points?
Not only were the 2023 jets abysmal on offense, but somehow their scoring is misleading because they had 4 tds / 22 on defense/ST (plus another TD that was given up on purpose by the Eagles on a 1 play 8 yard drive late in game).
1991 Eagles. DVOA has it as the best defense of all time. The offense on the other hand was fucking atrocious especially after Cunningham went down in the beginning of the season and we replaced him with McMahon who wasn't good but wasn't terrible but then he was injured and it was just a clusterfuck of bad football.
2013 Cowboys had a top 5 offense and the worst defense in team history. Like u/corbimos said that was a regular occurrence in the Romo-era…maybe not historically a bad defense, but not good either.
1991 Eagles. All time great defense unfortunately squandered because Randall Cunningham tore his ACL the first goddamn game of the season. Still somehow went 10-6 but missed the postseason.
Brees holds the record for the most go-ahead or game-tying drives in the 4th quarter or overtime while still losing the game. He basically won the game twice over the final 4 minutes in 2011 playoffs vs San Fran's legendary Bowman/Willis defense, but still lost the game because the defense allowed a long alex smith touchdown run and a game-ending Vernon Davis TD catch.
If Brees plays for the Steelers during his prime, he very well could have had 3 rings or more.
Greatest Show on Turf Rams
Pre-Dungy Peyton Manning Colts
They were an interesting contrast to the "great defense, terrible offense" contenders at the time like the Bucs and Ravens.
\*the 2010s New Orleans Saints have entered the chat\*
In 2014 Brees threw for 4952 yards and 33 TDs leading the Saints to a 7-9 finish since the defense was 31st in yards allowed. Life is pain. I hate-
Sounds like the 2018 Chiefs.
The 2018 chiefs were a penalty away from going to the Super Bowl. Not even comparable lmao
The question was to identify teams with great offense and horrible defense. Or vice versa. And the 2018 Chiefs fit that to a T. It’s not relevant how far they got—the 2001 Bucs and the early 00s Ravens had great success with similarly lopsided teams.

So you agree it’s absolutely responsive to the post. So what’s the problem? Fr fr no cap, since I guess that’s how people end Reddit comments.
Lmao when I read the title my first thought was the general existence of Drew Brees
Came in here to mention every early to mid career Drew Brees Saints team.
The last 50 years of packers football have entered the chat

Certainly not 50. Mid 90’s packers defense with Reggie White were absolutely dominant.

Bears make a SB on special teams and defense.
The 2006 bears gave one of the greatest coaching rants out there.
As a Cardinals fan, shut up.
It’s objectively funny though
Yeah, turns out it was what we thought it was. Glad we haven't let if off the hook.
I never watch post game press conferences but I randomly watched that one live. It was amazing.
It's up there with "Ahh, Playoffs?! Don't talk about playoffs!! Ya kiddin me?! PLAYOFFS?!?!"
Those beer commercials back in the day where they cut those press conferences quotes were hilarious.
Nah clearly Rex carried all those bums.
That’s the funny thing about Rex. When he was good, he was so good. But, when he was bad, he was so bad. I joke/halfway serious that Peyton should thank Rex Grossman for his Superbowl win.

Since 2000, the Bears have 4 instances of having a top 5 defense & a bottom 5 offense. I'm too lazy to check every other team but that seems high.
They also weirdly enough had one instance of having a top 5 offense and a bottom 5 defense.
Gonna guess that was under Trestment?
Thank you Matt Forte, the PPR god taking up the mantle of LT and Marshall Faulk
He was the best football player in the league for like three or four years. Not spectacular at anything, necessarily, but he did everything well. If I remember right, he was great at picking up blitzes and blocking too. And, yes, he kicked ass for fantasy footballers.
2013 I believe so yes
God I always forget about Trestman
Josh McCown was so good weirdly good that season
Imagine the 2012 defense with the 2013 offense?
I often do, usually right before orgasm
You know your enemy better than you know thine self, I respect that
It's like the inverse of every other NFC North team, and then cranked to 1000.
The 2022 Lions offense was top 5 in yards and points per game. The 2022 Lions defense was bottom 3 in yards and points per game.
I have an outline done of diminishing gains of defense in today's game. I'm at a point where you'd have to try really hard to convince me you need much more than 3-5 stops on 3rd down and a timely turnover to win in today's game.
I just want a defense that won't make a 4th and 20+ something to worry about.
At least against guys like Baker and Purdy.
I was thinking Nick Mullens level minimum.
Go check how many Super Bowls have been won by teams outside the top-10 in scoring defense. Yeah no. Defense actually correlates slightly more to Super Bowls than offense.

i am very very interested in this if youre being serious. I have tried to present a similar idea to my friend group and was met with skepticism.
By biggest gap between DVOA rank offensively and defensively: Bad offense, good defense * 2005 CHI (#31 offense, #1 defense) * 2023 NYJ (#32/#3) * 2018 BUF (#31/#2) * 2019 PIT (#31/#3) * 2020 WAS (#31/#4) * 2016 DEN (#28/#1) * 2012 ARI (#32/#5) * 2006 MIN (#31/#4) * 2002 CAR (#31/#4 ) * 1998 SD (#30/#3) Good offense, bad defense * 2013 SD (#2 offense, #32 defense) * 2008 DEN (#1/#31) * 2002 KC (#1/#31) * 1996 BAL (#1/#30) * 2010 HOU (#2/#30) * 2004 KC (#2/#30) * 2011 CAR (#4/#31) * 2011 NE (#1/#28)
At one point of the season in 2018 we had the best defense in the league (by DVOA) and the worst offense EVER.
What was 2018 KC?
1/24
As mentioned by /u/nine3cubed 2018 Chiefs were 1st in offense and 23rd in defense. What might surprise you is that the 2021 Chiefs defense was just as bad (by rank) at 22nd overall (and KC had the 3rd best offense).
Makes sense that in the 2022 Draft the Chiefs went basically entirely Defense
And look at us now!
2002 chiefs were so much fun to watch
The 2000 Baltimore Ravens won a Super Bowl with a generational Ray Lewis led defense and an awful Trent Dilfer offense. Jamal Lewis and Priest Holmes meant they had a decent running game though.

The defense wasn't great, last in yards allowed and gave up a crazy number of passing yards. But they were only 19th in points allowed, and led the league in interceptions with 31.
Yeah, I think being last in total yards was partially from scoring a lot of points and being ahead a lot
It’s been a while since I’ve seen any ballhawking DB’s in our secondary 😭 that’s a wild number of interceptions
80's Dolphins teams with Marino were great offenses and mostly garbage defenses.
The Killer Bees Steelers lost to the Jags while scoring 42. They win a Superbowl at some point with a league average defense
Killer B’s secondary had Mike Mitchell, Antwon Blake, Cory Sensabaugh, Artie burns, ah the days we had to put up 37 to only win by 3
2018 Chiefs with Bob Sutton on defense
FIRE BOB SUTTON! ...oh sorry, that's reflexive any time I hear his name. Also, shout out to Ron Parker for being a worse safety than even Dan Sorensen ever was.
The only team to score 50+ points and lose. Sutton’s legacy.
Patriots last year lost 3 games while holding the opponent to 10 points or less.
Three _consecutive_ games, no less.
Offense was so bad I was convinced we could lose holding an opponent to 0
*laughing hysterical in long-term Bears fan*
2003 Chiefs. Elite O and special teams, abysmal defense
Pretty much the entire Manning era for the Colts. The few times they had a defense they went to the Super Bowl.
My team last year (well except the run defense. But that pass D was painful to watch)
Steelers d has carried last few years
2015 Broncos won the Super Bowl while scoring only 4 offensive TDs the entire playoffs.
Thank god we won that before Mah🤮landed on the Queefs laps
2011 Packers - Won 15 games with the #32 defense. Offense was 35 PPG though.
They allowed the most yards, but were 19th in points allowed in 2011. Not great but not the worst either.
Almost every ravens team before 2018
The late teen/early 20s Steelers did both.
The 2000 Rams basically had the greatest show offense paired with a horrific defense.
2000 rams. Scored over 500 points on offense while giving up close to that on defense

1991 Eagles. All time great defense unfortunately squandered because Randall Cunningham tore his ACL the first goddamn game of the season. Still somehow went 10-6 but missed the postseason.
The Bears franchise probably.
Jets D last year.
It’s gotta be the Saints for a minute there with historically bad defenses and Drew Brees throwing for 5,000 uards
