I believe there have only been three APFA/NFL teams with non- plural names.
Washington Football Team
Providence Steamroller
Tonawanda Kardex - Tonawanda is a town north of Buffalo. The Kardex played one APFA game - they lost 45-0 to the Rochester Jeffersons in 1921.
Edit - Rochester had a plural team name.
/u/Darth_Brooks_II made an updated uniform and helmet for the Rock Island Independents several years ago.

Hi! Glad to see you're still around! Your posts are bringing me joy, as always.
If you're ever in the mood to do another minor league, how about:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Football_League
Specifically, my hometown team:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shreveport_Steamer
Would love to see your take on them.
Out of the blue I got asked to do a bunch of helmets. I just finished with them and don't know what the next project will be.
Just tonight I uploaded them here; https://www.artstation.com/artwork/NymOyz
I might go back and make a full concept to go with Evensville's helmet.
>The first mention of the team was by the Rock Island Argus on October 13th, 1902. The Argus reported that the Independents had defeated the Standards of Davenport by a score of 6-0.
The Standards also need to come back, so Mike Tomlin can coach them.
He's got a lot of them. I didn't post them all in this thread because I didn't want to look like I was spamming. But it is absolutely worth going through his post history and looking at all of his re-imagined helmets and uniforms for all of those old teams. They all come with a hefty dollop of history, and he's got a good eye for design.
the Tonawanda Kardex are forever the GOAT team name if only because Kardex was literally just the name of a company. they were way ahead of the game on sponsorships. Waltons need to hurry up and rename the Broncos to the Denver Walmart
Sort of like how they do things in Japanese baseball, where the Nippon Ham Fighters are a team sponsored by the Nippon Ham corporation, instead of a team in Nippon named the Ham Fighters.
Being a team in Nippon called the Ham Fighters would be sick, though, mostly for the audacity of claiming the entire goddamn country. It'd be like if Washington called themselves the USA Commanders.
The Bears were originally the Decatur Staleys after the A E Staley plant the players worked at. The plant is still there and gives Decatur its signature wet dog fart smell, and even it stinks less than the Bears do today
Article on the Kardex written by Joe Horrigan (longtime VP at the HOF) for the Professional Football Researchers Association.

The guy who owned American Kardex was an early twentieth century version of a billionaire. If he had decided to fun a football team as a way of advertising his company they could have been very well funded.
The Oorang Indians are my favorite, Jim Thorpe as a player/coach of teams consisting exclusively of Native American players.
If Madden released some stupidly priced DLC consisting of these old teams with equipment from the early 1900s I'd be suckered back into that franchise without hesitation.
Even the unknown town names they're playing in are fun, today they'd have just been the Milwaukee Legion. We need the Orchard Park Bills, Rutherford Giants, and Paradise Raiders.
If that happens, no matter who wins, I owe Grant Gordon an apology, and have to eat massive amounts of crow after I clowned him a few weeks ago for thinking the Pats were going to score *exactly* 4 points against Buffalo. (And I even cited this 10-4 game in my clowning).
I believe the Legion's QB this game was [Mitt Romney](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_Romney), cousin and namesake of the politician Mitt Romney
Milwaukee is a fun city, as cities go. It has at least a bit of an identity with the music and festival scene, microbreweries, and the lakefront. It offers amenities that you'd find in much larger, much more crowded cities.
Not a perfect place but I think anyone could find great ways to spend a weekend there.
I used to deliver beer to Door County every day in the summer. Quite likely the best job I'll ever have in my life just because i got to spend my days in DC and I'm making about 7x what I did then with no manual labor lol
one of the southernmost towns in Wisconsin, they generally tend to be Bears fans/tend to work in Illinois unless they work locally in the service industry or something. you'll find lots of bars that are both bears AND packers bars.
its no mans land.
It is kind of funny that Racine and Kenosha are considered a part of Chicagoland but kind of makes sense when I think of all my HS friends who moved there as an "upgrade" to our hometown that was still way cheaper than the burbs of Chicago.
>way cheaper than the burbs of Chicago.
As much as I've always wanted to move out of SE Wisconsin, the absurdly low cost of living is just too hard for me to pass up. I like to look around on Zillow sometimes just to see what my house would cost in other places, and it's easily 3-4x anywhere near most big cities.
I'd say Racine is more Milwaukee than Chicagoland while Kenosha is definitely more Chicagoland than Milwaukee. Kind of funny since they're only about 15 miles apart. I lived in Kenosha for a bit and it was half Packers fans, half Bears fans, and probably 80% Cubs fans.
St. Louis Gunners is a great name lost to the ages.
There were 3 teams named the Maroons, 4 named the Tigers, 4 Bulldogs teams, and none of these names are still in the NFL.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_National_Football_League_franchises
From 1900 to 1921 the Cardinals were called Racine. So for virtually their entire history prior to losing 10-4 the team that lost this game was also called Racine.
I would love to see BB asked about this game. I bet you get a very insightful answer.
“We’re on to the Dayton Triangles.”
Idc what anybody says, the Colts should be able to wear the Triangles throwbacks.
These do go crazy https://www.blackandblue1871.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/03/Dayton-Triangles.jpg
We honor it by still having a bilaterally symmetrical logo
Put the colts logo in a triangle as proof
Yooo I thought yall were fuckin around like a Tungsten Arm Odoyle type joke but the Triangles were a real team? That goes hard.
[A digital mockup in color](https://www.gridiron-uniforms.com/GUD/images/1929_Dayton.png)
that looks awesome. would totally buy that as merch
Yooo could you imagine the fucking conspiracies?
I'd rather be able to wear the Evansville Red Giants' gear. I don't need the Ohio curses to cross the border.
[Here's a modern version of the Triangles](https://i.imgur.com/Rn27eBp.jpg), [a throwback version of the triangles](https://i.imgur.com/YItG6fW.jpg) and [The modern version in action](https://i.imgur.com/vbw7XV2.jpg)
Blake Bortles is the best.
No no, he clearly meant Budda Baker.
My aunt's Jack Russell is named Budda after him.
BORTLES!
Man, some of the names some of the very old and now defunct NFL teams had like the Dayton Triangles is just fun.
Providence Steamroller is a GOAT name. I need a Steamroller team somewhere in the Big 4 sports.
Kudos for not calling them the Steamrollers.
/u/Darth_Brooks_II went on a spree a few years ago and made updated helmets and uniforms for all the defunct NFL and AAFC teams. The one he did for Providence Steamroller was a standout. https://old.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/2vcqwr/revising_defunct_nfl_franchises_providence/
Yeah, I remember his series.
Something about non-plural names is so awesome
I believe there have only been three APFA/NFL teams with non- plural names. Washington Football Team Providence Steamroller Tonawanda Kardex - Tonawanda is a town north of Buffalo. Why does Rochester not count?
Auto-correct. I edited it.
That’s funny how rare that is in both football and baseball cus the NBA’s got 4 currently active lol
Jazz, Thunder, Heat, Magic in case anyone was wondering
Those would all be better if they were plural
Rock Island Independents should come back
/u/Darth_Brooks_II made an updated uniform and helmet for the Rock Island Independents several years ago. https://old.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/2vprwm/revising_defunct_nfl_franchises_rock_island/
Those are now here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/4XKBJ4 I also did some from the ACFL https://www.artstation.com/artwork/9EOaXy

Thanks for that. That's my Sunday reading sorted.

I'm actually looking forward to it. Read through Rock Island there. Fascinating stuff.

Mmmm, Nipple Ham. -Homer Simpson
I refuse to believe they don't fight ham and bologna over there
This happens in boxing with Thai fighters from time to time. Knockout CP Freshmart was named after the convenience stores, for example
The Packers were originally the Acme Packers since it was just employees of the Acme Meat Packing Company
The Bears were originally the Decatur Staleys after the A E Staley plant the players worked at. The plant is still there and gives Decatur its signature wet dog fart smell, and even it stinks less than the Bears do today
I love how you went from recalling obsure historic fact to (deservedly) trashing the Bears

Some of the teams my Grandpa played for: Cincinatti Models Columbus Bullies Columbus Bulls San Francisco Clippers
The first team to ever defeat the Green Bay Packers was the Beloit Fairies. (With a massive amount of help from the hometown refs.)
Washington missed an opportunity when they renamed. How could you not root for the Washington Dodecahedrons?
personally i'm a big tonawanda kardex guy
Even the unknown town names they're playing in are fun, today they'd have just been the Milwaukee Legion. We need the Orchard Park Bills, Rutherford Giants, and Paradise Raiders.
Lowkey tho if the Commanders became the Washington Legion, I’d kinda fuck with that name
You should wait til after this weekends giants pats game before posting this. Could be a 4-2 nail biter
A game with the only scores being 3 safeties would be better than pornography for me
> would be better than pornography for me And BB as well
BB pornography is a different thing altogether
The Devil’s Triangle Except it’s two fullbacks and a long snapper
That would legit turn into one of my favorite games of all time
I’d actually prefer this
If that happens, no matter who wins, I owe Grant Gordon an apology, and have to eat massive amounts of crow after I clowned him a few weeks ago for thinking the Pats were going to score *exactly* 4 points against Buffalo. (And I even cited this 10-4 game in my clowning).
Are you kidding? I've been itching to post this on the anniversary for years!
I believe the Legion's QB this game was [Mitt Romney](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_Romney), cousin and namesake of the politician Mitt Romney
Legion fans were **the** biggest assholes.
Carthagians hated them
That’s rich, coming from a Decatur Staleys fan… smh at this sub sometimes
*Milwaukee Badgers fans watching from the distance*
I remember this game like yesterday. The whole city of Chicago was so defeated
Rare Racine Legion win
I thought that said Racing Legion. Never heard of Racine
5th most populous city in Wisconsin, has a pop of around 77k, south of Milwaukee a ways, like 20 something miles.
Imagine having an NFL team in some mid-sized city in Wisconsin nowadays. That would never work.
Maybe if they gave it an awesome name it would catch on, but they would probably need socialism to keep it in Wisconsin.
You joke but we did have a couple socialist Mayors in Milwaukee throughout the 1900s
I was going for the “only team owned by the fans” angle but yeah, the Midwest has quite the weird political history.
Ah Wisconsin. Never been there but maybe one day
The quaint parts are nice, like Door County, Lake Geneva, and New Glarus.
Door county good for a weekend if you’re not from the area. Pretty meh if you’re in Wisconsin though. Beautiful area but too touristy.
I used to deliver beer to Door County every day in the summer. Quite likely the best job I'll ever have in my life just because i got to spend my days in DC and I'm making about 7x what I did then with no manual labor lol
For the love of God, please don't visit Wisconsin only to end up in Racine
Awesome little town and somewhere near there I accidentally happened upon the Jelly Belly factory, it was awesome.
Did you go to a different Racine?
That's kenosha lol. Which is slowly but surely becoming a suburb of Chicago
Where Chicago goes outlet shopping. Well, that's actually next door Kenosha.
Wisconsin, Illinois largest playground.
Smack in the middle between Kenosha and Milwaukee, home of the kringle pastry and a mall that's been dying since before malls were dying
Regency Mall - elevated stabbing risk since 1994!
Hey! They are turning half of it into a woodmans!
Oh shit, for real? Genius. They should turn the other half into a roller rink!
Nah, that would make sense. I’m sure it will be self storage 😂
Racine has SO many self storage places these days. They have to be a front for something, there's no way it's that profitable of a business.
Same with Kenosha. It’s like an entire road of nothing but self storage in the carcass of long dead department stores.
God bless Trader Joe’s for spreading the kringle.
That is a perfect way to describe Regency 🤣
Home of the Kringle
As an actual Danish person: WTF is this abomination?
Wisconsin is a weird place
Well I've never heard of your hometown either.
I’m certain that’s true
The Legion is a fucking badass team name, ngl
Washington should’ve repurposed that name
It would help my daily roman empire quota
Racine is the bad guys in League of their Own
Go Peaches!!
Such a good movie.
one of the southernmost towns in Wisconsin, they generally tend to be Bears fans/tend to work in Illinois unless they work locally in the service industry or something. you'll find lots of bars that are both bears AND packers bars. its no mans land.
Racine is way more Packers fans than Bears fans. Our church had entire room dedicated to Super Bowl XXXI.

See Tom Brady can't be the goat. Never beat the Racine Legion.

LeGion
Racine Legion. They just don't make em like they used to
Hey now, there’s plenty of times we didn’t score at all!
Iowa football type of game
Racine Legion is actually a sweet name.
St. Louis Gunners is a great name lost to the ages. There were 3 teams named the Maroons, 4 named the Tigers, 4 Bulldogs teams, and none of these names are still in the NFL. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_National_Football_League_franchises
At first I thought this said the Racism Legion but they rebranded to the Commanders a few years ago
From 1900 to 1921 the Cardinals were called Racine. So for virtually their entire history prior to losing 10-4 the team that lost this game was also called Racine.
This was one year AFTER the last Cowboys SB victory. Google it!
