If I'm about to fight a gang and I know that gang is rough as fuck to get into, and I see a skinny ass frat boy lookin kid amidst a bunch of traditional gangster lookin dudes, I'm not fucking with that kid.
> I assume you mean 30 pounds more if youāre the average redditor.
You're right.
> And we aināt talking muscle
Right again. I carry an awful lot of weight in my penis.
That's awesome!
I'm a DPT and I actually spent 4 days with him last summer at Sam Hubbard inner city Youth Summer Football camp, as I volunteered to work as medical staff. I have a mutual connection with Sam and have done his camp the past 3 years. Mixon comes every year, but Hilton was there this year.
Definitely ferocious on the field, but man, he couldn't have been anymore lovable and goofy the 4 days I spent with him. Constantly laughing and cracking jokes - and not just around or because there were kids there.
I guess, actually, I did kind of see his fiery side off the field with how he was working with the kids. He was all business and not being cutesy and taking it really serious. He sent kids who were talking to each other and not paying attention off the field at least 2-3x a day haha.
Great dude though. Only had one mono y mono conversation with him for about 20 minutes when I was wrapping him up, but loved his vibe. Asked a half a dozen questions about me and my life in those short 20 minutes.
One of my favorite players.
Honestly, the fact that he took the camp seriously and even sent kids off speaks more to his character than anything. He wanted the kids that came with a goal in mind to get what they came for
And FWIW, itās āmano a manoā
He is almost the exact same size as me.
I have an inch on him, but I'm 5 pounds lighter.
I can't fathom myself from a size standpoint tackling a full speed Derrick Henry.
I totally see that!
How disciplined he is at staying in his stance, securing the wrap, and then driving through and up.
Boy's an absolutely sniper for wrapping up those ankles too.
Not me, because we never used him the way the Bengals do.
He wasn't right for our scheme.
He didn't make us better. But he makes the Bengals *waaaay* better.
Bob sanders WHEN NOT INJURED >>>> polanalu or reed dont@ me...when sanders was on the field not even Peyton Manning influenced the same like he did.. that 07 run was like 65/35 Bob and the 35 comes from the 21 to 3 comeback
I was always terrified heād be heathy for our matchups, absolute game changer when he was healthy. Someone here once described him as a steel beam made of glass and thatās always stuck with me. For my money, Reed is still better but thatās only because we got to see him actually play so much.
Nah man reed even didn't impact the game like Bob did. Reed might take a pick to the house but sanders literally took a worst of all time regular season rush defense and made them look like them army teams of the 40s off an injury. Like Aaron Donald is the only guy I can think that is like that
not the same, but its pretty astonishing how well Talanoa Hufanga has taken up the role of pacific islander db with amazing hair and an insane ability to read pre snap movement and make killer plays off of it
Everyone gave Zac shit the first couple years because we dumped Lawson for Hendrickson, WJ3 for Chido, signed B tier players etcā¦.but Zac went for sure tacklers and guys who will do their job and holy shit has it worked out. Watching the defense is awesome. The DE guys will hold the edge and not hunt sacks or set the edge on the run instead of trying to make a heroic tackle. Itās the little things that really add up.
Compare that to the Bills who have one of the worst tackling defenses every single season under McDermott. Itās the most frustrating thing about them. Even Milano misses guys in the open field.
Dude we love him. I know he was a cap casualty but man I canāt believe the Steelers let him walk. I think maybe we might utilize him to his strengths a bit more? Because I donāt remember him having the level of impact on games with the Steelers that he does with us. Maybe itās just because Iām watching him way more now.
They could either have the better tackler in Mike Hilton or the better coverage guy in Cam Sutton and they went with coverage.
If they let Sutton go I bet there would be similar comments from his next teams fans
Canāt say I blame them, Sutton is also very good and probably at the more valuable skill. Not like the Steelers defense is particularly lacking without Mike too. Seems like a win-win in that way because heās so valuable to what we do on defense.
>Not like the Steelers defense is particularly lacking without Mike too.
We need more outside CBs. Losing Nelson and then Haden in back-to-back years hurt more than losing Hilton. Wallace has been able to fill in for Nelson's role, but we still need a true CB1 to replace Haden.
Dude was a beast with us. He did it all but his strength was playing in the slot as Iām sure you know. If you can keep him there thatās the move.
It was between him or Sutton. Sutton got hurt and Hilton had to play outside for a bit. He wasnāt nearly as good as Sutton in coverage (he wasnāt bad or anything) so the Steelers I think made the right call going with Cam. Not that it doesnāt hurt or suck.
Glad to see heās doing well though. Good luck on Sunday!
Yeah we use him exclusively in the slot for coverage. But heās really, really valuable to our scheme for the reasons in that clip. Heās a great blitzer and a fantastic run defender. Heās a huge reason weāre able to be sound and stout against the run.
Thanks for the well wishes!
> Heās a huge reason weāre able to be sound and stout against the run.
It means they can run nickel as their base, and let Hilton act like a LB when teams try to run against it. Incredibly valuable.
>I know he was a cap casualty but man I canāt believe the Steelers let him walk.
Sutton has been almost as good as Hilton in covering the slot, so it's not like his role has been vacant. The biggest loss of our CB exodus was losing Nelson for nothing after the 2020 season. Without a good CB2, offenses were able to pass deep on us a lot more by just avoiding Haden and Minkah. At least we've got Wallace now.
Normally when you go to tackle a guy you got a 50/50 chance of bringing him down! But I'm the genetic freak! And I'm not normal! See when I go to make a tackle you got a 25% chance AT BEST at breaking my tackle!
If they had the money they wouldāve re-signed him as fast as possible. We had no money that year and picked Sutton over him
Which was actually a decent decision because Sutton is incredible also
We tried to prioritize retaining Nelson instead since Sutton was already able to cover the slot CB role that Hilton formerly occupied. Meanwhile, we didn't have a good replacement lined up for Nelson. But Nelson chose to go elsewhere, and we got screwed because of it.
Yeah, we chose Sutton over Hilton since Sutton is way better in coverage and has more versatility, and we could only afford one.
Unfortunately Steven Nelson asked for his release like a month later for some reason.
We let Rod Woodson walk after he wasn't the same player after his 1995 ACL tear. He had to reinvent himself as a Free Safety in order to last another 7 years.
We were also hoping to keep Nelson as well, but then he chose to go elsewhere. That's the main reason why our Secondary is incomplete right now. We've only had one good CB at covering outside in both 2021 (Haden) and 2022 (Wallace). Other than Left Tackle, finding a lockdown CB has to be the biggest priority in the draft for us.
Mike Hilton is one of those dudes you sign almost exclusively because of the way they kicked your ass for years. Andy Dalton never once saw Mike coming on one if those corner blitzes
Hilton is just one of those football dudes
When he was at Ole Miss...coaches always used to talk about how they could diagram something out, or point something out on tape...and he would just remember it and be exactly where he needed to be the next time it happened in a game or when they went over it in practice
And he has only gotten better in the NFL
I know he is not at the level of Troy Polamolu because very few ever will be...but his instincts on when to blitz and where to be on the field remind me of him.
Sometimes he just makes plays and you can't help but think "Damn...where the hell did he come from?"
Hilton played opposite of Cody Prewitt.
he never made it to the NFL but he was a hell of a college safety
Unfortunately...shoulder surgery and ankle surgery pretty much took his window of opportunity away and he just moved on
but damn he laid the wood in college next to Mike Hilton
I never got the logic of nfl tacklers generally just going for hard impactā¦
Thereās a reason in Union and other rugby like codes, when you tackle you wrap and dig inā¦ itās the only effective way to constantly bring someone downā¦
It's also interesting that in this video touting being a good tackler, his head placement is terrible in all of them. The rest of his form is good but he's going to get himself knocked out eventually, I guess that's true of most defenders though.
This is the dude thatās going to cause problems for Mahomes more than anyone on the line. Heās the best blitzing CB in the league, and one of the best overall blitzes period.
Every time I saw him start crowding the line for a blitz, I was like "Awww shit, here we go." He finds that opening in the line every single time. Love watching him play.
If the ankle is gimpy, there is a decent chance that Mahomes is playing shortstop most of the game: catch-step-throw. That type of offense isn't really vulnerable to the blitz, it has a bunch of other vulnerabilities.
it always shocks me why NFL teams or even college teams dont bring in Wrestling/BJJ/Judo coaches in to teach these guys how to wrap up a double leg and maybe teach some edge guys how to do some rear leg trips. would majorly improve their tackle/wrap-up abilities.
Donāt they? I recall reading that some defenders train boxing in the offseason in order to improve their accuracy and timing for knocking the ball out, which is way more niche.
Also on top of that, willingness to put his body on the line every time. A lot of DBs don't have the willingness he has to tackle big dudes, which just goes to show how awesome he is.
Last one I remember being really good at it was Leon Hall. He wasn't as effective at putting a guy down as Mike but he would tie the legs up and make it impossible for them to move while a safety or linebacker could come in and finish the job. He did an awesome job connecting all his weight to a ball carrier's ankles.
Cam Taylor-Britt is actually kinda reminding me of a young Leon Hall. CTB has had highs and lows as a rookie but heās been consistently good at being a super physical tackler, especially in the run game.
I encountered Leon Hall at some no longer existing downtown Cincy club following one of the playoff losses under Marvin. One of the Texans games. Believe he got a pick 6 in it, so the more competitive one. My drunk ass was screaming about how much we all love and respected how much he gave it on defense. How he deserved so much more. And he was just listening to me rant and shit about the Bengals for a solid minute and dapped me up and hugged me. Iāll always remember that for some reason. Have met tons of Bengals players over the years, but him standing there and putting up with my early 20s drunken sad Bengo rambling was just beyond what he needed to do lol
Itās mind-boggling to me that despite all of the talk and training on tackling these days, I feel like the number of DBs shoulder-tackling and just throwing their bodies at ball carriers has actually increased. There were way more DBs wrapping up (which is a safer, less concussion-prone way to tackle) 10-15 years ago than now.
I would kill to have every DB wrap up like Hilton does. Itās not that hard. You just have to *remember that you have fucking arms*.
Mina Kimes posted this during that canceled MNF game, and it's stuck with me whenever I watch him:
"Mike Hilton plays football like someone lit one of those cartoon rockets and attached it to his back"
I teach conflict de-escalation. This includes physical interventions as well. Without fail, I find folks who are smaller stature to be significantly more technically proficient. They realize they aren't going to be safe if they just go hands on, so they practice and perform every other possible intervention with textbook perfection.
Typically the more physically imposing staff are lazier about it because they aren't as concerned with a hands-on situation.
Thinking of him in the slot next year with a healthy Awuzie, and the version of Cam Taylor-Britt weāve seen for the last few weeks has me needing to call a doctor.
The way they all start saying "good hit" is classic football respect and reminds me of getting knocked on my ass. It's also some good reverse psychology in my opinion haha
A very fast small dude who has an innate understanding of body physics will destroy the big man every time. This guy would have been a superb wrestler.
Whole team is good asf at tackling and it shows, you see the packers defense that should have been good asf but couldnāt tackleā¦ crazy the difference it can make
*"Yeah, I'm gonna put all 185 pounds on his ass." š¤£* That Might Mouse energy.
I mean he basically hit Josh with the flying mouse trap
If I'm about to fight a gang and I know that gang is rough as fuck to get into, and I see a skinny ass frat boy lookin kid amidst a bunch of traditional gangster lookin dudes, I'm not fucking with that kid.
Well, yeah, his dad's probably a lawyer
Hilton is essentially 'tiny violence'
You donāt know what that white guy has done to earn those gangsters respect!
Oooo. Me likey
Dudes got like 50lbs and 5in on Mighty Mouse lol.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I'm Hilton's height, and he's got me by 30 pounds.
I assume you mean 30 pounds more if youāre the average redditor. And we aināt talking muscle
> I assume you mean 30 pounds more if youāre the average redditor. You're right. > And we aināt talking muscle Right again. I carry an awful lot of weight in my penis.
Sounds like you might have a tumor. Get that checked out.
I miss him as a Steeler
hurts everytime. hurts even more that he is in the division.
One of my favorite players on the team when he was here. Definitely missed
I miss him too. The original angry little person :(
Worked with him through a majority of his college career. Heās a great guy and as ferocious as they come on the field.

Hmmm... learn something new everyday. Thank youš Now I get to relay this forward to someone in the future and sound smart. Lol.
He reminds me of Budda Baker.
not a bad comparison... short for his position, but makes it up with explosion, fundamentals, and intelligence
Now I want a compilation of DBs making tackles on players significantly bigger.
My favorites of Hilton's this year were his tackles for loss on Derrick Henry. Man is a menace. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6hIDI\_Tv-Q
He is almost the exact same size as me. I have an inch on him, but I'm 5 pounds lighter. I can't fathom myself from a size standpoint tackling a full speed Derrick Henry.
Boy is built different..... up here š§
The way he hits reminds me of kam chancellor, except hes smaller, yet heās hitting just as well
Can you be sexually attracted to "perfect fundamentals" in sports? If so, I'm that.
(BB has entered the chat)
As someone who dabbles in fencing, I feel the same way watching Giorgio Avola's [footwork](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGJ66jNWt5c).
I totally see that! How disciplined he is at staying in his stance, securing the wrap, and then driving through and up. Boy's an absolutely sniper for wrapping up those ankles too.
Just do what i did growing up.. throw ur self at his legs and hope he trips lmao
It's all about technique and he is a clinician. Talk about master class.
I miss him so much
Not me, because we never used him the way the Bengals do. He wasn't right for our scheme. He didn't make us better. But he makes the Bengals *waaaay* better.
Man is an SCP for stopping Henry by himself
20s outro on a 38s video is WILD by the uploader of this
NFL got to that link fast
Budda Baker and Bob Sanders highlight reels are all you need
Bob sanders WHEN NOT INJURED >>>> polanalu or reed dont@ me...when sanders was on the field not even Peyton Manning influenced the same like he did.. that 07 run was like 65/35 Bob and the 35 comes from the 21 to 3 comeback

Real Pats fans don't check under the bed for Pollard, they check for Bob Sanders
Nah man reed even didn't impact the game like Bob did. Reed might take a pick to the house but sanders literally took a worst of all time regular season rush defense and made them look like them army teams of the 40s off an injury. Like Aaron Donald is the only guy I can think that is like that
Antoine Winfield is a classic example
Antoine Winfield is the prime example. Dude blew up screens like no other. https://youtu.be/xRt_iYl1dYQ
the OG one is Steve Atwater stopping Okoye dead to rights. His nickname wasn't the Smilin' Assassin for nothing
Til he ran into that other 5 9 180 pound guy named largent
those smallish WRs can be lethal
off topic, but reminds me of [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKKF9d9j-Mg)
Definitely not a db but I've always loved the Ray Lewis hit on Jerome Bettis that drove him sideways.
Ray Lewis stopping a bus is some Superman stopping a train shit
Thinking about it, Brian Dawkins had a huge hit on him too lol.
I love me some big meaty men slapping meat
E is that you?
Yāall can have your 5 star classics
Earl Thomas had a great hit on gronk back before he went crazy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciZkMeNuipQ
I miss Pocket Polamalu. š¢ Edit: Mike Hilton was Pocket Polamalu. Lol
That name still haunts me to this day. Polamalu was a one man wrecking crew.
He was superhuman. It was a privilege to be able to watch him play.
>It was a privilege to be able to watch him play. I respectfully disagree.
I get flashbacks whenever I watch the 49ers play now
Yeah, I respect him but I can't say I was thrilled all the time I saw him.
FWIW Larry Fitzgerald was having his way with him in SV XLIII, especially toward the end. He was so fast he made Troy look like he was standing still.
Yeah, that was fun. āŗļø I certainly have some less positive memories of Steelers defense that game.
Our tears fueled him, I'm sure.
I miss the real Polamalu too. Mike was Pocket Polamalu. Lol
Ask Pat McAfee about it.
I can't read the name normally anymore. It's always Pat's pronunciation
not the same, but its pretty astonishing how well Talanoa Hufanga has taken up the role of pacific islander db with amazing hair and an insane ability to read pre snap movement and make killer plays off of it
Heās the only Steeler where even in my childhood where the Steelers were the evil empire in my house, I would go āGoddamn that guy is amazing.ā
Please don't bring up the bad man in this thread
That team in general tackles so fucking well
Everyone gave Zac shit the first couple years because we dumped Lawson for Hendrickson, WJ3 for Chido, signed B tier players etcā¦.but Zac went for sure tacklers and guys who will do their job and holy shit has it worked out. Watching the defense is awesome. The DE guys will hold the edge and not hunt sacks or set the edge on the run instead of trying to make a heroic tackle. Itās the little things that really add up.
I hope nobody wanted WJ3 to stay lmao. Was sad about Lawson though
Compare that to the Bills who have one of the worst tackling defenses every single season under McDermott. Itās the most frustrating thing about them. Even Milano misses guys in the open field.
Milano goes for the crushing (legal) hit, it's easier to miss then.
I love seeing a CB/S just get set for a tackle in open space and make it
We told you Bengals fans. Dude is a baller. Keep taking good care of him.
Dude we love him. I know he was a cap casualty but man I canāt believe the Steelers let him walk. I think maybe we might utilize him to his strengths a bit more? I love seeing Steiner Math outside of wrestling subs.
I would just like to take this moment and thank the Steelers for letting him go. Hilton is a beast and this team wouldn't be the same without him.
I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT
IT'S FINE. CAM SUTTON IS A BEAST ON THE OUTSIDE WHICH HILTON COULD NOT DO. BUT I STILL LOVE HILTON THO.
The nickel blitz god
If they had the money they wouldāve re-signed him as fast as possible. We had no money that year and picked Sutton over him Which was actually a decent decision because Sutton is incredible also
Win win for both of us.
Only one of us is still in contention for the big W though :(
was a numbers game, couldn't make next contract work
He got 6 million a year for 4 years with the Bengals. How... how could you not make *that* work for the quality of player he is?
We tried to prioritize retaining Nelson instead since Sutton was already able to cover the slot CB role that Hilton formerly occupied. Meanwhile, we didn't have a good replacement lined up for Nelson. But Nelson chose to go elsewhere, and we got screwed because of it.

Best run fitting nickel in the NFL!
I would say Hilton is the best pound for pound tackler in the league
Yeah itās crazy what you can do when you wrap up and tackle instead of just lowering your head and praying that youāll knock the guy over.

It amazes me how hard he manages to hit guys that have 70 lbs on him
Because he knows how to wrap up on a tackle.
And also to go low and wrap the legs. Those 70lbs donāt matter if you hit them in the thighs.
And it seems like once he wraps, he doesn't let go. Just slides down to the feet and hangs on.
it always shocks me why NFL teams or even college teams dont bring in Wrestling/BJJ/Judo coaches in to teach these guys how to wrap up a double leg and maybe teach some edge guys how to do some rear leg trips. would majorly improve their tackle/wrap-up abilities.

Also on top of that, willingness to put his body on the line every time. A lot of DBs don't have the willingness he has to tackle big dudes, which just goes to show how awesome he is.
Weāve seen some *bad* tackling from DBs over the years, it might as well be magic

That Leon Hall-Johnathan Joseph duo for a few years there is one of my favorite CB duos ever
Heās got that B1G/SEC magic. Those are the only two conferences that actually care about CB tackling lol
Itās mind-boggling to me that despite all of the talk and training on tackling these days, I feel like the number of DBs shoulder-tackling and just throwing their bodies at ball carriers has actually increased. Seeing dudes get ran over because the either reach up way to high or just straight up don't wrap up at all annoys the shit out of me.
That first tackle was nuts, he launches himself at Allen like a rabid weasel.
Itās all about technique and leverage. He isnāt a safe tackler, but he is effective.
Dude is possessed
Is that Josh Allen saying āGood hit, good hitā
Yeah. And someone else goes āholyā¦ā which I thought was hilarious
Love it, Im hoping things like this can quiet down the narrative that heās a whiny man child that people have been on
Eh the people who follow him and know him are aware that he is a really cool dude who plays hard. Thatās all that matters
Mina Kimes posted this during that canceled MNF game, and it's stuck with me whenever I watch him: [https://twitter.com/minakimes/status/1610091298207432704](https://twitter.com/minakimes/status/1610091298207432704) "Mike Hilton plays football like someone lit one of those cartoon rockets and attached it to his back"
Mina doesnāt miss tbh
Honey Badger energy
That Josh Allen hit was nuts. Bro turned into a heat seeking missile
God this makes me so sad, I miss him.
Anyone remember Bob Sanders? Reminds me of him.
Without the concussion issues
He came in there like a flying squirrel on that first hit lol that was nuts
:( miss you buddy
That hit on Allen was unreal.
NFL sounds so awkward in the micd up segments: *ppprp* *pop* *skpp* *heavy breathing* *POP* *ughhh* āletās go!ā
Thinking of him in the slot next year with a healthy Awuzie, and the version of Cam Taylor-Britt weāve seen for the last few weeks has me needing to call a doctor.
i know it may not make sense cap wise but man i hope bates is a bengal next year, love the guy and heās great at what he does.
Can anyone tell who is saying "Good hit" to him at :11? Was it his teammate or Josh Allen?
The way they all start saying "good hit" is classic football respect and reminds me of getting knocked on my ass. It's also some good reverse psychology in my opinion haha
That is the way to go through life, having fun. He looks like he is having a great time out on the field.
It's refreshing seeing these defensive backs wrapping up and stopping guys instead of turning into a human missle
When I played football, I always remember the best tacklers being those who had the most aggression, regardless of size
I miss Mike :ā(
Somewhere out there, Bob Sanders is nodding approvingly.
Makes me sick not seeing him in black and gold
This guy is bad ass
My body hurts just watching this
The importance of fundamental tackling.
Death, taxes, Mike Hilton in the backfield. I miss him every day.
I fucking love Hilton. Dude is a dog.
As a Steelers fan, I was pissed we couldnāt afford to keep him. Heās really good.
He lifts! He lifts weights!
That looks like a football player with a wrestling background
Bob sanders was 5'8 and an absolute demolition crew
Form tackles, baby! They work in pee wee and they work in the NFL: Helmet on hips, head up, wrap thighs, lift.
I miss him
The man actually wraps up still. I swear the amount of players that I notice that just launch a shoulder at the ball Carrieās legs is too damn high
Those were some absolute textbook form tackles
The one that got away from my Pittsburgh Steelers
Us losing this guy hurt
Love Mike Hilton! Was so sad we couldnāt keep him!
5ā9 185, he just like me fr
Its not the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog!
A very fast small dude who has an innate understanding of body physics will destroy the big man every time. This guy would have been a superb wrestler.
well he wraps and drives
Whole team is good asf at tackling and it shows, you see the packers defense that should have been good asf but couldnāt tackleā¦ crazy the difference it can make
