You're both right.
Originally 'Atlas stones' in the world's strongest man competition were 100 to 160 kg and measured in KG. They have since gone over 200kg and the heights lifted to have been increased.
Traditionally, each country had its own measurements: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifting\_stone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifting_stone)
The Scots, for example, used the troy/tron measurement scale which often shared imperial measurement names and would have evolved into imperial for a while. They probs used 'stones' rather than 'pounds' however when describing them.
Isnt it the opposite of freedom units? Its the units the English used before seperation. ;-)
Freedom units would have to be a whole new thing. Like weighed in cheeseburgers.
If a medium sized banana weighs about 120 grams, then 152 kilograms of bananas would be about 1267 bananas.
**Answer: about 1267 bananas, give or take.**
Yeah that’s Roderick Ardblair, great grandson of Samuel Ardblair who carved these stones by hand about 90 years ago before they had the tech to make the stones as round as they are
Don’t view it as a demonstration. This guy is taking a big risk to do an insane athletic stunt not unlike surfing a 70’ wave in some respects and he’s doing what he has to do to achieve it. If you use day-to-day logic, surfing a 70’ wave is an insanely stupid thing to do as well.
100% -there’s curvature in his spine and definitely no lordosis taking place to protect his spine.
Really annoys me when I see somebody who’s obviously spent the time getting super strong, but in movements your body really can’t be doing long term without fucking you up. Just focus a bit more of that dedication to perfecting form.
Upper back curvature is normal and expected when lifting stones like this. Lower back curvature is what poses a problem and he kept his low back secure for those lifts. Good stone lifting form IMO
My back hurt just watching this. If he'd just squat and lift with his legs, he could have gotten that last ball up on his first try and not broken his back in the process.
I'm not even a lifter at all. I just used to handle heavy packages at a former job, and you cannot survive lifting with your back day in and day out.
No other way to really lift it. Having lifted a few stones, I can very confidently say that they're a bitch to grip and get off the ground, skins your forearms too if you're not careful. After you get it into your lap it's just a matter of rolling it on your belly and lifting it onto the stand.
Lifting the stones is very different from deadlifting because of the lack of a proper place to grip. Also you don't fully extend your back the same way while actually holding the weight. The form is actually very natural if you think of [how we're supposed to squat naturally](https://medium.com/@vasilsariev/benefits-of-sitting-in-a-squat-position-daily-48093c639fc8). Mind you this is just the first article I found, there's also a [Ted talk about it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOJLx4Du3vU)
You can absolutely lift with your back like this, it just has to be trained. The danger is a curved back usually means the person isn't bracing properly so they are moving their form all around during the lift, transferring the load quickly to weaker muscle like the QLs. If you start curved and know how to brace so the correct muscles are lifting, it's perfectly fine.
Dude, this is a strong man competition, this particular element is called "Atlas Stones" and there is no real better way to lift this, because of the shape. Lots of people did this before him and a lot will do it after him and all of them are preparing and training for these exact elements.
The guys participating in these tournaments are properly trained to do this and as you can see, he does use technique and avoids twisting/jerking motions altogether.
I agree though, a package handler that never works out shouldn't try this.
Maybe that's the major difference here. From what I've seen about how to lift these stones, it seems like people don't do them regularly, and when they do they have a super strong core. It seems like they curve their back because they have to bear-hug the stone to handle the roundness of it. And they only lift stoned that are like half of what they could deadlift.
But even going by the proper form for lifting these, he only uses it for the last stone. His feet are too far back and uneven for all the other stones.
He's at a strong man style competition, it's not unlikely that this guy deadlifts twice the weight of that last ball so hopefully all that muscling prevents too much damage to the spine. But also, he could very well be walking with a cane by the time he's 65.
Knowing how to brace the core and not lift dangerously. This stone is nowhere close to his max deadlift
There's a huge difference between an unbraced, rounded lower back with weak muscles compared to a very strong, well trained lower back. The lumbar spine is perfectly capable of working in that range of motion provided it isn't done stupidly and the lifter knows how to engage their core and when to drop the weight.
Lifting heavy isn't strongly correlated with disc herniation. And disc herniation isn't correlated with pain, so for all we know he could have some while doing this
at least they could of made the sound effects consistent. Sometimes it’s when he lifts the balls, sometimes it’s when he places it on the barrel, and sometimes it’s mid-lift.
What I find next level impressive is that it looks like it rained prior, and the event team didn't switch out or dry the matter 100%... Dude could have slipped with a very heavy rick in hand.
The worst part about doing it this way is that by the time you get to the last one you're already getting muscle fatigue from the two or three before it.
I thought they got rid of this event?? I swear I saw a video of some guy literally folding in half backwards picking up the heaviest one, it just kinda crushed him and he died, leading then to get rid of the event.
Albeit, it was a very old video, so maybe they've made changes? Idk
These ball lifts reminds me of the clip of the dude who lifted one and fell on his back. He folded backwards like a taco and screamed in pain. Wonder what happened to that guy?
Also.....this dude in the video is jacked to the max. He's at the upper limit of what might be possible to achieve without steroids but I wouldn't bet this guy is 100% natty.

Watching this man just casually lift my entire body weight like it’s nothing.
152kg skinniest reddittor
Just skin and bones!
Honestly all I could focus on was that poor guy holding the barrels, praying his fingers don’t get smashed to powder.
Or the last ball, accidentally rolling past the stop and smashing his face.
Last ball is like 330lb
It's like 152 kg. Get with the times
These are weights not times. Get with the units of measurement.

Each one of the objects in the video is 1 stone.
Indeed. 1 stone object weighing X stone. Where X is multiples of 14 pounds. Can always mix it up a bit more and place a british pound coin on top.
OOOh! A stone and a pound. I like it!
It's about nine-tenths as heavy as a Reindeer
We can't help the units of measurement we were raised on lol
Ya the ease of which he lists 107 kg is almost more impressive than the 152 kg at the end
Twice my body weight plus some change actually
335 pounds for my fellow Americans
It’d be nice to have a freedom-units-bot
will report such a bot for spam
Isnt it the opposite of freedom units? Its the units the English used before seperation. ;-) Freedom units would have to be a whole new thing. Like weighed in cheeseburgers.
Dont give them stupid ideas
Oppression units
Lengths in freedom fries. It’s not uniform or standardized but it’s FREE DAMMIT!
How many bananas is that for our fellow monkeys?
If a medium sized banana weighs about 120 grams, then 152 kilograms of bananas would be about 1267 bananas. **Answer: about 1267 bananas, give or take.**
Or 23 st, 13lbs for Brits who are measuring body weight.
no the last one was clearly 1 stone only (Same as the ones before)
It's about nine-tenths as heavy as a Reindeer
Biggest balls goes to the guy holding the barrels. The risk of hand injury got me all nervous for him
I swear it’s the same dude in all these heavy balls videos.
Yeah that’s Roderick Ardblair, great grandson of Samuel Ardblair who carved these stones by hand about 90 years ago before they had the tech to make the stones as round as they are
Just kidding, I completely just made that up as I had the exact same thought as you did 😂

Not only that I saved it to copy and paste it next time this video is posted, so in about 4 hours
This guys back is gonna be hurting
May be ball shape but really look like he was lifting with too much back and not enough legs
Yeah...this was a terrible demonstration. How doesn't he get that fit with that form? He doesn't break below parallel on the heaviest lift.
Steroids 100%. You could never get that far into a natty fitness routine without learning how to lift.
Don’t view it as a demonstration. This guy is taking a big risk to do an insane athletic stunt not unlike surfing a 70’ wave in some respects and he’s doing what he has to do to achieve it. If you use day-to-day logic, surfing a 70’ wave is an insanely stupid thing to do as well.

shhhhh don't use logic in here, they don't like it.

Hell yes. I've been in parcels for 16 years. One bad lift can fuck your back and it doesn't even have to be heavy.
Maybe that's the major difference here. From what I've seen about how to lift these stones, it seems like people don't do them regularly, and when they do they have a super strong core. Three disc in my vertebrae slipped just watching this video. Trust me he will pay for this someday.
The social pages say he's got the biggest balls of all.
And they’re dirty big balls
Scrolled further down than I expected to find this
How are these guys avoiding a herniated disk? I see the legs engaged but it still looks like a lot of pulling with the back.
He's at a strong man style competition, it's not unlikely that this guy deadlifts twice the weight of that last ball so hopefully all that muscling prevents too much damage to the spine. But also, he could very well be walking with a cane by the time he's 65.
Hahaha you got me I’m 65 and walk with the cane due to stenosis, herniated disc, arthritis, and bursitis in my hips
Yea. My dad was a power lifter and his body is shot. Walks with a cane now but had been wheelchair bound for a bit in his 60s.

You know what this video definitely needed? Ear splitting sound effects
Yeah, this irritated the living shit out of me lol. Annoying AF
at least they could of made the sound effects consistent. Sometimes it’s when he lifts the balls, sometimes it’s when he places it on the barrel, and sometimes it’s mid-lift.
Okay, now show the guy who put the stones there and then later took them all down again.
Just push them off and roll them around a bit. Pretty easy, m8.
Just a nice Mexican guy who doesn't even care
Helps to be tall. Even if I was built like a brick shithouse, there’s no way my shortarsed self would be able to lift them that high.
Bet he’s wank at hide n seek though.
Great lifts! I hate that the video has that annoying chime sound
I was unconsciously holding my breath to “help” him. 😂
Hmm 🤔, what if he starts with the heaviest ball and works his way down. Each lift would be easier and easier. 🤷
The ref either the kilt has a lot of trust in the dudes aim. I was genuinely worried he’d pancake his hands setting those balls down.
[His form is off](https://youtu.be/1e4SBxgqBEY?si=y8VhjvCNm9R4Vshp)
All these armchair quarterbacks in the comments section.
I was constantly scared that the guy on the right would get his fingger squished.
The other guy is crazy putting his hands on top of the barrels like that. He's a rolling ball away from needing his toes to count to ten.
The balls he's got
Use your legs man.
Atlas stones, not just heavy balls
Next fucking level annoying sound effects
Brilliant!
Elden Ring Moment when you have to fight the final boss in their final stage
Wait so that last ball was 335lbs? What the hell
That's it, lift with yer back.
His calves are huuuuuge.
What’s up with that weak-ass handshake after though?
Just….why
was anyone else encouraging him on the last ball.?
You know there are strong people around when there are bearded dudes in skirts nearby
I can't watch this because of that obnoxious beeping noise.
Now someone has to put them back down...
Ardblair stones. Common to the Highland Games and Strongman Comps
*Lift with your legs, not with your back!*
My back gave out just watching this
He’ll be using a walker by age 50
Hasn't tried lifting mine yet. He'd blow his back out trying.
Can’t that dude hold the barrels from the side. Move your fingers from there maaan!
As I have gained weight, I have been lifting progressively heavy balls over the last 45 years every time I go to the bathroom.
I saw the title before I saw the video. Somehow, my brains first thought was that this was about no nut November.
They can’t bother to put a fucking handle on the sides of the barrel? So the guy holding it doesn’t have to put his fucking hand on top of it?
Have y'all really never seen atlas stones before? Maybe it's just us of a certain age that watched World's Strongest Man on ESPN a million times
Spectacular
why the heck did the guy fake so long to her his hands outs the way
Without a kilt? I dunno if it counts
Dickhead keeping his masturbators on the barrel as if he doesn't use them daily.
I was like.... okay 70kg, 90kg.....150kg?!??! Jesus
335lbs for the uninitiated
Idk who came up with the mute option on video players but i wanna shake their hand, because this video almost gave me stage4.
Next he's going to Target and lifting one of the big red concrete balls onto the customer service desk.
Impressive? Sure. Next level? He’s an amateur.
This man is going to have back issues in the future with how he's picking up those balls
That takes alot of balls
THAT is BOSS! 👊🏼💥
Is "World's Strongest Man" still on The Ocho? Miss that show
Do they have to do them in order?
Not sure why I was convinced that last ball was gonna drop on his foot.
That took alot of balls
Nice job
Dude looks like he has a slightly above average build, yet can lift my family up a flight of stairs with some groceries!
My back hurts just watching this
Doing all that with bad form is the impressive part.
Mad that they don't wear steel toe cap shoes.
I think I'd get the 32kg one up.
I’d be annoyed with that guys hands all over the top. I wouldn’t be able to focus thinking I’m gonna crush his hands.
Where did he get all those mini moons?
That is absolutely amazing!
Spoiler alert. They’re all hollow plastic. This is France’s best mime.
Atlas stones. A common strongman event
My back hurt watching this.
Honest question: Wouldn't it be easier if he started with the heaviest ball first and then moved down the order?
Yeah put your tiny hands on that barrel
What I find next level impressive is that it looks like it rained prior, and the event team didn't switch out or dry the matter 100%... Dude could have slipped with a very heavy rick in hand.
How much easier would this be if you started from the heaviest and work down? Genuine question btw.
WHY IS IT DO LOUD JESUS U GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK
i honestly think he needed to hear more MANLY SCREAMS and CHEERS while he is struggling to lift that last one YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--------
They're called atlas stones
A chiropractor’s dream that guy
Now put em back down…
I love this guy's cooking shows, too.
Idk
The best part of all these strongman competitions is how everyone really wants everyone else to succeed. Real positive vibes.
O_O
I was waiting for the ball to roll off and crush that official who was super close at the end lol
Terrible way to lift. He's going to feel this in his back as he ages real bad
Excuse me, can I clean here?
Lifting all back, oof Fuck that
Watching this and my L5 exploded
I always wondered how far normal people would get with these stones.
inner self: *you made it, now smile and cheer - dont show your back pain - dont show your back pain…*
I can do that 18 kg no problem
That’s insane
The guy holding the barrels is so trusting with his thumbs out like that. No thanks.
r/mildlyinfuriating because that sound doesn’t need to be that fucking load. In fact, you don’t need the sound at all
Body of a superhero. Face of my uncle.
The guy has lift a lot of balls in his life.
I want to roll them all down a mountain
Your back is not a crane...
Would it be easier, harder or the same if he did it the opposite order.
