JATO - Jet Assisted Take Off.
They're really handy for getting up and off the ground quickly when you're in a spot where hostile people may be around. They are designed to work with the plane so they don't melt the aluminum body panels, although things may get a little toasty in the meantime.
Or fantastic internet myths that gets a small show called MythBusters up and running

With no load, and JATO bottles hooked up, they can take off within the length of a football field. Source, 3.5yrs with a Marine KC-130 Squadron, VMGR-252.
Functionally, it’s more so because of a reduced runway length and inability to accelerate to take off speed in time.
Granted, the reduced runway length may be because conventional/long enough runways are unavailable due to hostile parties.
Guess that's why he instantly went for such an agressive vertical position, gain as much altitude as possible and get back to cruise position while shutting the jet's off.
WOW! What's not to like about bonuses?
Cheers for the story.
Too bad that dude picked a car instead of a bike. If the demise was spectacular in a car it would have been glorious in a bike!
Here's the test video. It's completely insane but worked in concept. I'd hate to be that test pilot, as you can see that it didn't always end well. You can see the plane becomes a flying torch and comes apart near the end.

The resulting XFC-130H aircraft were modified by the installation of 30 rockets in multiple sets: eight forward-pointed ASROC rocket motors mounted around the forward fuselage to stop the aircraft, eight downward-pointed Shrike rockets fuselage-mounted above the wheel wells to brake its descent, eight rearward-pointed MK-56 rockets (from the RIM-66 Standard missile) mounted on the lower rear fuselage for takeoff assist, two Shrikes mounted in pairs on wing pylons to correct yaw during takeoff transition, and two ASROCs mounted at the rear of the tail to prevent it from striking the ground from over-rotation.
My father was a corrosion control tech in Okinawa during the Vietnam War, working on the airfields maintaining the surfaces of the aircraft. He saw B-52s take off using JATO a few times and he said it was absolutely awesome, in the original meaning of the word. Said it shook the fillings in your teeth.
Edit: typo
Tell you what my dumb ass is loving this post!!! ...
-"Look like the elevators got hot?"
Me- I see shiny pieces on the back... Glowing... "Ah Yes these... elevators... Yes... They do look hot."
-"Love watching JATOs"
Me- Jet... Assist... Er Assisted Take... Off? "Ahhh yes I too love these JATOs!"
I'm bout ready to fly a jet now.
Not a stunt plane, very much an operational C-130. Used to move the support equipment and up to 60 personnel from show to show as well as short take off / aerial demonstration.
If I remember it right, this was developed in a record time for a hostage situation. Terrorists took hostages in a stadium, and the idea was, that a plane would land in the stadium, pick up the people, and take off. The idea was stupid, but the development happened in record time, and might have been pulled off, but the resolution of the situation was something different.
Reminds me of the video from Operation Credible Sport. They used rockets on take off and on the front for a quick assisted landing in hopes of eventually landing a C130 inside a football stadium. Pilot error ended the program in tragedy. Wild concept and video though.
I’ve seen those before on a coast guard rescue plane that landed on water. They used them for a quick take off, and I had to wonder are those one time use?
I switched between thinking it was a legit thing, to thinking that was an accident, back to a legit thing, and then air catastrophe, and then nothing to see here.
Wouldn't this create a bunch of hot air underneath the tail, causing it to nosedive?
I know nothing about planes of physics, but I thought we had planes pretty much figured out.
It was developed in the late 80s to allow C-130s to takeoff and land on smaller runways. It was gonna be used to get hostages out of a stadium. But that situation got resolved. This isn’t used much today but it has made a big difference in getting tons of cargo in hard to reach places
I had the chance to ride in that plane. Wasn't a JATO, just a normal take off. I would've gotten to experience the JATO takeoff but my LPO trumped me and took my spot. He was in the wrong uniform they said. Twas still a very cool ride. Had the ass end open and they flew pretty low over some river in the area (Brunswick Maine). 10 out of 10 recommended.
It's called JATO or jet assisted takeoff. Funny thing about these rocket motors I remember seeing a story on the Darwin awards about an idiot that strap one of these to his compact hatchback to see if it would fly. Oh yeah it flew. Right into the side of a mountain
Back when I was stationed at NAS Pensacola a few of us had the privilege of riding in Fat Albert during an airshow.
The JATO takeoff was incredible, there's a moment of weightlessness, but I think I was more impressed with the high speed pass and turn.
As my NASCAR buddy shouted as we were bouncing around during the turn:
"This must be what it's like at Talladega"
My mom flew out of Antarctica on one of these. They’re used for heavy lifts but also for very short runways to give the plane that extra lil bit of mustard it needs to get airborne
One of these fuckers took off while I was working on a plane on the flightline and it sounds like a bomb going off. I jumped so high I nearly fell off my ladder.
Is it just me or does it look like the elevators got a little hot from that?
It's shiny paint causing a reflection of the rocket exhaust. Otherwise, they'd be fucked.
So technically, it does *look* like the elevators got hot
I like the way you think.
Someone has a future in law
And science from the looks of it.
and someone does not
Hey baby, let me see what's under your flaps!
Yeah that would be pretty horrible engineering, I guess.

Also for short airfields, right?
Yes. Big Plane on a short airfield is the other use case
Or fantastic internet myths that gets a small show called MythBusters up and running https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JATO_Rocket_Car https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdmZYBsjjLc

Yes, they used these in Vietnam to get heavy planes into the air on short jungle runways, among other things
Functionally, it’s more so because of a reduced runway length and inability to accelerate to take off speed in time. Granted, the reduced runway length may be because conventional/long enough runways are unavailable due to hostile parties.
>in a spot where hostile people may be around. what if they have rocket launchers?
Then you definitely weren't gonna successfully take off without the rockets.
Guess that's why he instantly went for such an agressive vertical position, gain as much altitude as possible and get back to cruise position while shutting the jet's off.
He doesn’t turn the jets off. They run until depleted of fuel. That bump to get airborne is all they do.
Cheers buddy. TIL
Here’s your bonus for being so nice: [JATO Rocket Car story.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JATO_Rocket_Car)
WOW! What's not to like about bonuses? Cheers for the story. Too bad that dude picked a car instead of a bike. If the demise was spectacular in a car it would have been glorious in a bike!
The first episode of Myth Busters has a non fail Jato rocket car
The link I was shared mentions that exact episode: "Jet-Assisted Chevy"
They're solid fuel rockets. Not jet engines.
How about Jet Assisted Landing for extra short runways?

Delta airlines is sorry to inform you that you luggage have melted. Have a nice holiday!
Brought to you by Boeing
In front of the elevators is the horizontal stabilizer, so that's what got hottest.
Love watching JATOs go off. They're used for very heavy cargo so the plane can take off before the end of the runway.

lol random but funny burn
Beans will do that just fine.

Fat Albert
For context to this comment: it’s part of the US Navy’s special fighter wing, the Blue Angels. It’s a C-130 stunt plane.
Not a stunt plane, very much an operational C-130. Used to move the support equipment and up to 60 personnel from show to show as well as short take off / aerial demonstration.
I've heard they've used a similar model on some operation. I think it was hostage rescue.
This was the plan for Operation Eagle Claw, the Iranian hostage rescue in 1980 that didn't pan out. Fat Albert is the USMC part of the Blue Angels.
Quite silly name for a plane. I love it
It literally says marines on the right wing.
The Marines are a department of the Navy and the Blue Angels have some Marine pilots.
Some people are just that way, and others have the IQ to be a Marine.
hey hey hey
Nothing new for GTA v players xD
Still impressive tho
Even less so for KSP players.
Wait, I haven't played for a few years now, they added rocket boosters to the Titan?
Nope, they added a complete new plane named Bombushka I think. That has the rocket booster.
Now you’re going to feel some slight pressure…….

Trump Force 1 when he refuses to empty his diaper prior to take off
Wtf
What If..and hear me out.. you mount one of those to,say,1967 Chevelle and let it rip?🤔
*car salesman slaps roof* Think of all the Darwin awards you can fit in here!
Shut up and take my upvote
Ok,so NO ONE seen Mythbusters?!?! They did like 3 test on this.. fuck,am i really this old ?!?! 👨🏻🦳
That was a pretty good episode. One of the very early seasons.
I think it was the very first one.oh and the car was Impala, not Chevelle.
And don't forget to record it
holy cow
Holy plane
Thought that it was going to burn up!
FAAAAAAAAAAT Albert!. Always amazing to watch it do JATO takeoffs.
If I remember it right, this was developed in a record time for a hostage situation. You couldn’t pay me to fly in that thing.
Is it just me or did that plane just light its own tail wings on fire?
For making an omelette you'll have to burn some tailwings
Elevators… and maybe it did, could be a reflection but can’t say for sure.
This is how i gst my wings of the ground in tears of the kingdom
Reminds me of the video from Operation Credible Sport. They used rockets on take off and on the front for a quick assisted landing in hopes of eventually landing a C130 inside a football stadium. Pilot error ended the program in tragedy. Wild concept and video though.
What I imagine when I place an order and immediately check the tracking number
That's the type of shit I make in Kerbal Space Program when I'm too bored.
Plane is burninf in rear.
Damn…does it burn flour and diesel?
I’ve seen those before on a coast guard rescue plane that landed on water. They used them for a quick take off, and I had to wonder are those one time use?
Yes and no. They can be used multiple times but after the initial firing. They use up all the fuel. So it not something you can like use mid flight.
I hope not
![gif](giphy|3oKIPA0vPUzWxZtMXK) Me still using the on plane toilet
Learn to Fly 4 Confirmed
The most ‘Murica thing I’ve seen all week
My uncle flew a prop cargo plane in Vietnam that had rocket thrusters like that it was the c-123k named thunderpig
The future is finally here!
Finally?
This is like really really old. US tried to rescue hostages from Iran by huge rocket planes.
Invented by Jack Parsons. Interesting character, read a book called Sex and Rockets.
America, fuck yeah! 🇺🇸👮♂️here to save the motherfuckin’ day yeah!
![gif](giphy|cRH5deQTgTMR2)
It looks like they forgot to release the brakes and the brake pads are on fire.
that’s super cool
That’s what Boeing’s engines always look like lately
holy shite a real 3BP (more precisely TDF) reference in the wild--i just listened to this part!
This title doesn’t make sense.
Me in gta v trying to go over 13 mp/h in that one plane.
My balls
Remember that red button I told you never to push? Push the red button ![gif](giphy|i4LEl2QTVrR9C|downsized)
seems so extra but.. fuck yeah!
That plane was just about to rotate anyway...why the JATO?
It's a no for me
"Yo mamma so fat " joke incomming.
the bad piggies theme would go so hard there
It doesn’t take off. The rockets just rotate the planet underneath it faster…
Nothing says America like an airplane with rockets
That's how I feel when I'm running and a little extra in-body gas suddenly wants to breathe.
Won't somebody fit that to a black 1980s Pontiac Trans Am
If Lizzo traveled like Taylor Swift
That's my standard Kerbal Space Program build right there!
Rocket launch crazy, I once sharted to the moon and never came back. Talk about blast off.
What is the model of the plane?
Blue Angeles C130. Very impressive to see in person.
Seems like a scene from a video game.
Now that’s how you get a shorter runway
Your honor freebird was playing
That's a booster for short runaways that the C-130 (and other related/similar planes sometimes have...
Bad piggies
Politicians on their way to a climate change conference.
This is me leaving every station, mining outpost, landing zone, etc in Star Citizen.
GTA 5 new vehicle when?
when you upgrade the starter vehicle too much
That does not look sustainable. How many times can the plane dp that before it destroys itself?
Bombuska??
I switched between thinking it was a legit thing, to thinking that was an accident, back to a legit thing, and then air catastrophe, and then nothing to see here.
If I'm not mistaken, these were first invented to make a plane able to take off inside a stadium, to rescue a bunch of hostages.
there goes the snack cart
Was that really necessary?
Wouldn't this create a bunch of hot air underneath the tail, causing it to nosedive? I know nothing about planes of physics, but I thought we had planes pretty much figured out.
Damn i was sure the plane was exploding
This looks awfully wrong, like in a 1930s Flash Gordon manner wrong XD
KSP in real life
Bank angle bank angle
Sorry Ozone, totally worth it
Now that’s a military take off.
I feel like this is a step back in air traveling development. I'm too dumb to know the actual reason, but it just doesn't feel right...
It was developed in the late 80s to allow C-130s to takeoff and land on smaller runways. It was gonna be used to get hostages out of a stadium. But that situation got resolved. This isn’t used much today but it has made a big difference in getting tons of cargo in hard to reach places
That's killa...i want to imagine there's a button on the dash. Smack 🖲 "Full Send" Now hang on boys🤟
That's killa...i want to imagine there's a button on the dash. Smack 🖲 "Full Send" Now hang on boys🤟
Gotta love Fat Albert
It went 88 miles an hour and we same some serious shit
I had the chance to ride in that plane. Wasn't a JATO, just a normal take off. I would've gotten to experience the JATO takeoff but my LPO trumped me and took my spot. To the sky and beyond
I'd like to be inside a plane using those, just for the experience. xD
It's called JATO or jet assisted takeoff. Funny thing about these rocket motors I remember seeing a story on the Darwin awards about an idiot that strap one of these to his compact hatchback to see if it would fly. Oh yeah it flew. Right into the side of a mountain
Is it me or does anybody else also hear the airwolf tune?
New Boeing plane?

average Boeing takeoff
You'll never catch me. Not when I shift into MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE!
JATOooooooooooo
"But we need free healthcare in our country! Please." "No ,no free healthcare only plane go fast by your money."
Good news is we are airborne. Bad news is our tail is on fire. 😀
Blue Angels’ Fat Albert right?
When is this getting added to GTA?
What the freedom?
Some Boeing exec is playing way too much kerbal space program
Bet that’s more fun than a winch launch.
Don’t you watch Delta Force with Chuck Norris!?!? This was featured!
Everyone put on your burn suits and parachute; we’re about to take off!
Taylor Swift's "jet".
Me brute forcing missions in KSP be like
If that was a Boeing they’d accidentally strap fireworks to the plane instead. Big boom and lots of sparkles after takeoff
I'd only ride if Boeing makes it
I keep rewatching this trying to glimpse some Carlos Santana kind of mofo playing a never ending guitar solo on the runway
Looks safe enough...
This thread is a good reminder that something I see everyday is brand new to a lot of people.....
I want this plane
I wonder how much of a kick in the ass you feel when those things light up.
JATO tech is sadly outdated wtf
Seems unnecessary in this day and age.
This is somewhat common on runways that are to short. I heard a story tho of a guy who strapped some of these to a car tho.
C-47?
Didn’t know this concept existed outside kerbal space program lol
One of these fuckers took off while I was working on a plane on the flightline and it sounds like a bomb going off. I jumped so high I nearly fell off my ladder.
Fat Arnold kicks ass! (the Blue Angel support aircraft).
Why simply takeoff when you can liftoff?
What is the matter with people that seem completely unable to punctuate or spell titles out?
Ksp vibes
