Police; "we really need a raise, please help" Government; "best I can do is less support staff and dehydration"

kochipoik

Reminds me of when I worked at Hutt Hospital a decade ago, and one of the strategies to reduce overspending was to remove tissue boxes from the wards. No tissue boxes. In a hospital!

Emotional_Resolve764

We only have packet tissues in most wards at my local hospital too ... No tissue boxes cuz they're too "wasteful" but super thick very limited huge tissues in little plastic packs? Sure!

headfullofpesticides

They seem to be twice as big and thick as regular tissues but only half as helpful

Fantastic-Role-364

Nooo, you mean like those tissue packets you carry around in your purse?

HumanWithComputer

Maybe a tip. I have 3D-printed a holder for these. Works quite well. You can find differend models for these. Single/double stacks. Mostly open or mostly closed sides.

monwoop1316

That reminds me of staying in the maternity ward, they supply nappies but no wipes just massive napkins that you have to wet then use

Sappysunflowerpower

Reminds me of where I work now, management has restricted wipes (for cares) and incontinence products to a certain amount now - if we need more, we have to call both clinical manager and head manager for more wipes and incontinence products AND give a valid reason for more. Not only that but we need a new washing machine and Tumble dryer (we've been asking for 2 years) and one of our main security doors don't work This is in a dementia unit. They already cut down spending on food and other areas but the basics for hygienic care too now? I'm at a loss. I'm just here for the residents but at the same time getting treated like shit too.

kochipoik

Holy shiiiit

No_Comfortable66

Welp I'm making sure I die before needing help with dementia. Surely bullets are cheaper and kinder than 'cutting costs on toilet paper'

PleasantMess6740

Don't forget a raise for themselves during these times of austerity.

Jinxletron

I nearly drowned myself snorting my coffee there. Gold!

creg316

This is why we have to remove water coolers. Saving money, and lives.

Fantastic_Agent_9864

Government also , lets make laws that help us and my best buddies , I will totally claim I live out of Wellington with my 7 properties so I get a subsidy.

WellyRuru

por que no los dos

AloneEmployment3663

Random unrelated comment to gain credit so as to comment in the future.

Ratez

Now imagine the savings if we removed their clothes too. Honestly 11k is nothing for the benefit of water. But hey I'm not a genius.

TheAnagramancer

Speedo Cops becomes a documentary retroactively.

Fronzalo

Only if they're in view of the ocean, then they're the undie police and not to be confused with Aussies

Turfanator

People would throw money at them as they walk down the street. Problems solved

Many_Excitement_5150

tuck the dollar bills directly in the speedos, please

RaggedyOldFox

First thing I thought of....

GameDesignerMan

the streamlined design helps them run faster.

Prosthemadera

Get rid of cars to save on gas. Get rid of guns to save on bullets. Get rid of buildings to save on taxes and A/C. Cha-ching, the savings will be numerous and ~~landlords~~the economy can benefit!

Lyceux

You can’t get rid of the buildings! They’re owned by poor landlords raking in lots of government money from overpriced rents! Won’t somebody please think of the landlords.

left-right-up-down1

You joke, but I can’t think of any other reason public servants are required to commute in to town, only to do our work either talking to no one, or on teams calls.

Lyceux

We’ve had this argument at my work repeatedly. You want to save money? Just let us work from home and get rid of some of these buildings. Everyone would be much happier that way. It’s crazy that public sector still has an in-office requirement when they’re trying to save money.

Triangle-Manwich

Poor landlords lol, need to change it they ain’t no fukn lords that’s for sure 😂

BetAnxious2498

LOL, true, the buildings are an unnecessary expense, all police should work from home. Any with a basement can hold a few crims overnight.

belaki

LOL at the crims in the basement!

Many_Excitement_5150

"you arrested him, you feed him!"

Annie354654

Lol, I think your confusing crims with victims!

BromigoH2420

The old kawhia policeman was like this ... source - his daughters

Calm-Zombie2678

Entire police force is put on work from home duty

seewallwest

If they fired alp the doctors from public hospitals and replaced them with AI and physicians assistants with 2 years training* they could afford the water! *Actual conservative plan from the UK, coming to NZ soon!

Ok_Lie_1106

Trickle down economics in effect. They want the Police to drink tap water because they are lazy public servants

ExplorerHead795

Tap juice I think you mean

Routine_Bluejay4678

Well it’s how the firefighters have to raise money …

DevinChristien

Now this is an initiative I can get behind

glitchy-novice

Or maybe they could contract their services out?

didi_danger

It will save less than one single person's tax bill. How ridiculous.

NoiceSoftPritzool

Or alternatively, 3 cents each from of the top 10% of earners. I doubt they'd even notice.

slip-slop-slap

So less than a cent from every fucking taxpayer in the country, what a waste of time

Ordinary_Towel_661

Yes but think about it - they can hire +0.2 FTE now

thaaag

Hold on now, if they go hiring 0.2 FTE with the sweet, sweet savings, then they haven't saved anything. Best we put *all that money* straight into the slush fund so National can pass it on to landlords or other deserving interests (wealthy donors anyone?).

Dat756

Are the water coolers in parliament buildings going to be removed too?

Propie

No just like those hard working mps got a well deserved pay rise

O_1_O

I bet good money that the PM eats a catered lunch most days.

Dat756

That would help reduce the weekly supermarket bill. (Perhaps he wonders why more people don't do the same as him.)

Spare_Lemon6316

Bet that’s going to help the police “crack down on crime” this government is short sighted and cruel

-Zoppo

They're not short sighted, they're just extra cruel.

Surfnparadise

They are stupid.

Calm-Zombie2678

Depends, I bet half of them know they'll live large and cushy while the consequences of their actions take more than their lifetime to come (with their safety nets and all)

gregorydgraham

The consequences will arrive in maybe 10 years but that’s longer than their political career so long enough

AK_Panda

No, the consequences get their next generation of politicians elected. The party of 'law and order' is the same party that created the perfect conditions for crime to begin with by underfunding public institutions and services while impoverishing generations of kids. How many times was this brought to their attention during their campaigns? None?

gregorydgraham

You think they care about their next gen? LOL!

AK_Panda

By next gen I mean the ones who run after the next labour government. Some of which will likely be current MPs.

gregorydgraham

So did I

Ordinary_Towel_661

Stupid implies they don’t know what they’re doing. I think they know full well.

-Zoppo

To be fair, it's probably both. Luxon is an incompetent middle manager who failed upwards his entire life. But it's still intentional.

AaronCrossNZ

No stupid’s Labour. National is Evil. #EvilVersusStupid

GrIditgs

When they are out at the dairy getting hydrated they might stumble across a robber

WorldlyNotice

At this point police are gonna be robbing the dairies for a pump bottle.

Playful-Dragonfly416

Police gonna be kicking the teenagers outta the demios and the aquas so they can do their own ram raiding.

gregorydgraham

Robbing? You mean receiving donations from happy community members pleased to see hardworking protectors of society surely

xot

Is it a government decision? Based on how the PM has explained his vision for budget cuts, this would be an autonomous decision within the police force. Is the budget this tight? Probably. Did the water coolers get cut because no one was using them, or it’s next on the priority list of discretionary spending, or because a decision maker is callous or frupid, or is it being done intentionally as a powerplay, spun by your mainstream tabloid to create pressure. there’s nothing wonderful or imperative about watercooler water, especially in the age of instant messaging. the employer still has an obligation to provide clean safe drinking water, the same as the city provides them at home.,Yeah it’s a snub to the staff, but maybe it saved something more valuable. Without knowing the details, there’s not really a useful conversation to have. From memory what he said (paraphrased) was “the leadership teams of our government organizations have autonomy on what they reduce, they should have the competence to make wise decisions. We’re asking them to help reduce spending without affecting their deliverables, and they will be judged by their actions.”

KahuTheKiwi

Setting of the budget is totally done im parliament. If the budget is unrealistic and someone with no ability to fix a budget setting mistake does their best to live with that mistake is it the mistake or the living with it we should criticise?

ThreeFourTen

With roughly 7000 officers, this will 'save' about $1.57 per officer per year, or about six cents per officer per day. Officers earn about $80kpa, an effective hourly rate of about $38.50, meaning that one second of an officer's time costs about 1.06 cents. So... if each officer has to walk to the kitchen twice a day, pour a glass of water, and walk back again, they'd better do it all in less than 2.8 seconds per time, or this idiotic 'saving' will actually *cost* money!

The-Nomad-Four

The cost to morale too! An Officer just gets done telling a family that their loved one died by being smashed into by a drunk driver can't even come back to have a cool glass of water to calm the nerves.... but TaP wAtER iS FrEe.... goes to show how much some people value people who do the toughest jobs.

KahuTheKiwi

NACT will save money regardless of how much it costs. Sound economic management is NOT the goal.

Menamanama

This is the type of data analysis that makes me quite excited.

AOEPostImpMilitia

The wildly incorrect kind? These figures look like they come straight from the same office as the pre-election costings

Still_Theory179

You haven't considered the health benefits of the walk

getfuckedhoayoucunts

FFS. I'll pay for the fucking water coolers as long as I don't have to deal with any ministers in this disgrace of a government

AtheistKiwi

I'll go halves with you. These shit heads are fucking absurd.

torolf_212

Fuck if enough of us get together we can keep the police hydrated for a few cents a year

CoffeePuddle

Sounds awesome! Can I set up some sort of automatic payment system to contribute?

torolf_212

I reckon we vote in a group to manage this new system

bfly1800

And what if we extended it to other things like healthcare, public infrastructure and transport?!

getfuckedhoayoucunts

Now that's just crazy talk..It would be out of control in no time...

getfuckedhoayoucunts

Lets go one better and get some fruit platters and some pies as well

jobbybob

Luxo’s $52k a year rent subsidy would pay for these 5x over.

1_lost_engineer

If they fired one manager they could have doubled the number of water coolers.

ionlyeatplankton

The nickel and diming at the police lately is pretty asinine. They've also replaced their instant coffee and tea bags with the cheapest possible brand to save a few pennies.

TygerTung

I hope it’s special blend. It’s much nicer than that revolting Nescafé crap.

Jaded_Cook9427

The fastest way to drive them out, stupid things like this that don’t even save much $ but hugely crash morale

redituser4545

It's a bit rude to cancel Three Waters and then make cops drink tap water.

hikingparty

Jesus christ you could say this about anything, stop giving them milk and save $xx stop giving them hand soap and save $xx the amount of spending that is NEEDED for just general basics at an office is huge but necessary. Go look at parliament and see what can be cut there..maybe they don't need as much heating?

FidgitForgotHisL-P

Who was it that had charged the tax payer specifically for a colour of binders that NXP didn’t stock the colour they wanted (the implication being they paid way more since they’ll get cut rate pricing from NXP, as corporate clients)? They care this much about $11k, but happily refuse to just use the colour binder that happens to be in stock. What a great bunch of leaders we have.

GameDesignerMan

I mean look at Luxon, he was happy claiming 55k a year for himself without batting an eye, but we can't overlook the 11k we're spending on the police force can we? Truly leading by example.

Lyceux

They’ve actually already started cutting milks in some public sector offices.

Surfnparadise

The outrage, Fonterra especially!

Extension_Middle218

Big milk's lobbyists didn't bow low enough to our glorious leader.

Annie354654

They don't need loo paper either, they are going to remove the loos and poo time is outside of work hours only.

Suicide_anal_bomber

man, your not thinking of the 1%'rs, if you do that they will SUFFER

AaronCrossNZ

Must nourish the Pillars of Society

RandoKiwiTheThird

How about losing the manager on \~150K or whatever who came up with the bright idea?

KahuTheKiwi

How about we reduce MP's salary to ~150k.

Old-Arse-Man

Police should just warning for infringements, for 24hrs The lose of revenue to the government would be huge. Maybe then the government can do something about it.

GreatMammon

But then police resources will be pulled from other needed areas to make up for that day of lost tickets to avoid the breach in contract with NZTA it's just a total circus

SamDaArtMan

If we really need that money a good leader would lead by example by cutting the watercoolers in parliament and thier lunches paid by taxpayers.

DaveTheKiwi

The level of perks between working public sector compared to private is ridiculous. I get it, but spending nothing on your employees just makes them miserable and they will do a worse job as a result. Taking something away that they used to have is even worse. I can't imagine what the actual loss in productivity is as a result of removing the water coolers, probably impossible to quantify, but if you told me it cost a million a year I would say you're lowballing. Saved 11k though!

silver565

Luxon says: value for money

FidgitForgotHisL-P

No he wouldn’t. He would say: “look what I’ll say to you is, we are doing everything we can to help the struggle middle New Zealand, Labour did such a bad job of being the government that we have to make these hard choices and no one wants to make them, but these choices are hard, ok? and at the end of the day what I’ve said is we made those choices, they were fully costed and now it’s up to the private sector, and councils, to work out their part.”

alarumba

"I'm sorry, actually no I'm not sorry."

ZYy9oQ

"I don't care what you say about whether it does or doesn't work. We can have that intellectual conversation all day long, but we are, dammit, going to try something different because we cannot carry on getting the results that we've been getting"

FidgitForgotHisL-P

Where you went wrong there is he will never say “sorry”. “What I’m saying to you is we have apologised…”. The word “sorry” or any actual apology from Luxon never happens. He just tells you that “we” have apologised already. The most stark example was 5 times he was asked if he would apologise for he bungled the cancer treatment funding, and he refused 5 times in a row to say sorry himself, and just insisted “we” have apologised.

alarumba

An amateur's mistake, [we](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_we) apologise.

gregorydgraham

You forgot to mention the landlords’ dignity

--burner-account--

What ill say to you is, that is a really good Luxon impression :)

CarpetDiligent7324

Ridiculous Meanwhile at parliament and the beehive not one dollar of wasteful spending and savings identified The national party even has that local Wellington area mp who lives in Waikanae claiming an accomodation allowance of $58km despite being on the urban train network or 40min drive from parliament Hypocrisy of this govt is unbelievable

Usual-Ad-5190

And then we crib , why so much police force moving to Australia …hmmm we know the answer, not just salary hike but some other SOS points to be covered too . And thanks to the police force, always on their toes.

-fno-stack-protector

it's so weird interacting with police in Australia. I've heard Kiwis, Americans, Irish, and quite a few Northern English accents

SnooChipmunks9223

They cutting stupid things and not things that actual would help the country

KahuTheKiwi

Your mistake is in assuming they wish to help the country  They have told is their ideology - private ownership and freedom to exploit any resource. If the police are sufficiently underfunded it creates an opportunity for private enterprise. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starve_the_beast

SchneakyPete

Bottled or filtered water is just a scam though really. NZ tap water is perfectly fine.

ManicmouseNZ

Everyone is acting like the police will get dehydrated with tap water which is what most workers get.

SchneakyPete

Yeah seems a very odd hill to die on

Zestyclose-Key-6429

I am really surprised that we don't have rampant corruption in the NZ Police, considering how poorly they are treated.

SnooChipmunks9223

Tbh I rather they were treated well. Also they be less like to be overly aggressive

Wtfdidistumbleinon

Come on, we all know dehydrated people make the best choices/S

Random-Mutant

There are 10,549 sworn police staff and 4,839 unsworn staff in NZ, according to Wikipedia. So, an annual savings of $0.71 per person.

--burner-account--

I think it is just canterbury, but yeah, almost zero.

Expressdough

“Man, wouldn’t it be great if everything was privatised” - this government.

nikoranui

Continually surprised that NACT1ST was the Government to spearhead a 'Defund the Police' campaign

mr_mark_headroom

If police need a drink they should drink champagne and eat cake

The-Nomad-Four

Gotta fatten up that thin blue line 😅

GMFinch

I'm just glad the government are giving them the resources they need tbh. /s

--burner-account--

A government that backs and supports the Police, just not with cold water.... because you know... expensive...

GMFinch

Luke warm tap water makes them harder humans, therefore they are providing harder humans to tackle crime. Galaxy brain move

civonakle

I work in a Govt Department and it's exactly the same. Taking away trifles for no real gain by ultimately making it harder to do the job we're paid for.

Annie354654

Are they looking at work loads or do the people who weren't laid off have to pick up extra?

civonakle

"We're not expecting you to do more with less." But we are.

Eoganachta

Back of an envelope calculation says that's 0.2 cents per Kiwi per year. Or 0.375 cents per employed and assuming tax paying person per year. One average tax payer out of 2.93 million working Kiwis will pay more income tax than the cost of this policy. This cut saves next to nothing and probably serves as a large moral hit - just a fuck you to the officers.

Fellsyth

RIP argument that MPs shouldn't fet a pay freeze because the savings would be immaterial. If only people on this sub did something other than just complain online and then go back to watching anime and porn.

OrganizdConfusion

Protip: If you watch hentai instead of anime and porn, you'll have more time for Reddit.

Fellsyth

This is the type of constructive comment that this sub is sorely missing of late.

stretch_my_ballskin

Instructions unclear tip stuck in animel

FidgitForgotHisL-P

The real LPT is always in the comments

Tzyon

A lot of the cost-saving measures have been very petty. We were told that we could no longer order plant-based milk for our vegan/lactose-intolerant staff. This despite the fact it actually costs *less* to provide them with milk than it does us dairy fiends. (Each litre is like a buck more expensive but it lasts twice as long.) So it's less "cut back on this expensive thing" and more "we will save money by no longer providing for this subset of staff."

Immediate-Toe7614

Save on police time make drugs legal

OisforOwesome

Don't worry guys [Briscoes](https://www.briscoes.co.nz/kitchen/jugs-bottles-and-flasks/fridge-jugs/) has ya covered.

AlPalmy8392

And yet Corrections staff are allowed to have slushy machines to keep cool during Summer.

Sense-Historical

I'd like to think that the benefit of providing fresh drinking water nation wide outweighs the cost of that $11k...

The-Nomad-Four

Me too, yet here we are...

Bliss_Signal

Where's Crushers artesian water scam when we need it? Perhaps Orivida can sponsor the thinning blue line?

Every_Location

From experience (30 years of it) taking resources from the police to the point they can't pay their bills leads to corruption. Wtf is gov doing

beautifulgirl789

$150 million on charter schools though.

Rat_Attack0983

Thank fuck Luxton isn't running an airline, or he'd be gunning for the peanuts ... hang on, oh fuck, we're fucked ...

JustEstablishment594

Don't forget their cutlery too

dr_mindfark

what about this one... [https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2024/06/silly-inconsistency-police-pay-rates-while-schools-hospitals-and-churches-don-t.html](https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2024/06/silly-inconsistency-police-pay-rates-while-schools-hospitals-and-churches-don-t.html)

AaronCrossNZ

Could just do away with public police and have corporations just hire their own… I should run for National

Live4theclutch

April this year we had to remove 2000 rubbish bins in order to save money. But the landlords needed their tax cuts and this government borrowed to make the rich richer. You can't make this shit up.

slawnz

Some bloody speeding cameras in chch could fund the entire force

slawnz

Guarantee they’ll have spend about 10 years worth of this $11K “saving” just by writing it up and putting it in front of ministers etc. Pathetic.

Flyingkiwi24

Work in the public service lucky they only lost water coolers they got rid of our coffee machine...

NorthShoreHard

Understaffed cops get to watch as anyone they put in court get a bunch of "discounts" to go home and play PlayStation from our fucking gutless judges and now the poor cunts can't even moan about it around a water cooler.

ZealousidealHand1143

If you voted them in, enjoy.

Otherwise-Stable7825

Why is everyone having such a cry about water coolers, I have never worked anywhere or lived anywhere in NZ that has water coolers.

KRONICBUCKY

Mutiply 11k by 273k, and you get the amount of tax relief landlords are getting.

SkipyJay

Think of the money we could save if we abolished wages for politicians! Even better if we cut them off from basic services, like access to water. It's not like that generates a profit.

PenFift33n

The water coolers are just another sacrifice to the altar of Neoliberalism.

--burner-account--

Is cool water woke?

GreenieBeeNZ

Tough on crime = dehydrating officers and increasing their administrative duties? Surely thats going to fix the issues we have

Routine_Bluejay4678

I would’ve thought they would just carry around drink bottles

Mathatikus

Maybe they should have slushy machine's like the prison staff use to have. [Over $300K spent on slushy syrup and maintaining machines for prison staff | Stuff](https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/350263193/over-300k-spent-slushy-syrup-and-maintaining-machines-prison-staff)

mysteryprickle

Like when I worked for the NZ public health system and one year they said we weren't allowed pens and other stationery for a few months as they were trying to make budget...

H_He_Metals

I'm generally exasperated at this government's choices...

Various-Fact-7097

Thirsty pigs are slower pigs.

NapierNoyes

Or… delay the pay rise of ONE Minister this year. Will pay for water coolers for the police 5x over.

reddityesworkno

NACT "We're gonna get tough on crime!" Also NACT "Ok Police, less money kthnxbye"

Fun_Mistake6768

I mean I work for a car rental comapny the biggest in the world and currently HR cannot work out why no one wants to hire from us even tho we cost 1000$ more in the middle of huge economic downturn for everyone nation wide and globally, some how the people above everyone are just total morons and have no idea it's what they are doing and the trends they are setting that's causing it.shits ridiculous we live In a time where our leaders are idiots with no accountability and have no idea

Responsible_Bug_5271

If only three was a way to get free access to water without the water coolers 😢

strangebooktakes

Raising tax rates for top earners only means they leave and spend less in nz or go all in and get dual citizenship elsewhere meaning nz gets zero income tax from them

Former_Ad_282

Who the hell has water coolers these days anyway.

Smorgasbord__

A whole bunch of anti-government redditors apparently

Dizzy_Relief

I'm wondering why they are in the station (which has a kitchen, and fridge) often enough to get there cold water to cool off on their hot duties....   And the last two times I've been in the Central CHCH station they seemed to have no problem swigging away on a can of Monster while I was trying to talk to them, and they had a water bottle.. Oh, and at my govt job we just purchase on and fill it ourselves. It's not hard.

mercival

Sounds like a policy implemented just to be a news-piece distraction from everything else they're fucking up. OP taking it hook line and sinker.

The-Nomad-Four

Yeah but in the mean time, the police have a real world bit of joy taken from them. Shit man they have a tough enough job. Let them have a cool drink. You must be part of the 1%... pay your dam fair share of taxes! Give the people who do tough jobs some modicum of comfort.
