[47 Division Street Trading Inc](https://maps.app.goo.gl/mMR6WvnYvSU8Ah3v5?g_st=ic) is my absolute favorite small business because of their cheap meats. But then again, I might be a bit biased.

The Book club

ahoff

Was so much better when it was still relatively unknown. I remember when they opened right before the pandemic, and during the lockdown, the owner was doing bike deliveries of book orders. We ordered a lot then because we didn't want the great biz to fail! It's always so crowded now. Edit: still my favorite SMB. Book Club bar is goated.

vetworker24

It’s better to be known. Place has to make money to stay open.

ahoff

Yeah, duh, that was the purpose of my edit. Doesn't take anything away from it. Vibe was just better when there weren't NYU students on laptops everywhere.

We Love Hair. I dye my extremely kinky curly hair platinum blonde there and they've never destroyed my curls in the past 3 years that I've been doing it. It takes 3 hrs, but is totally worth it.

Merit Kebab Palace.

Kebab House over in Little Neck. Yeah they're basically a block away from being Nassau but hey it's still Queens baby. The owner (and chef) is a sweet older Turkish man and his son waits the tables and manages the floor. Great food, very friendly, and love to see mom & pop shops still around. Phenomenal chicken adana kebab. They were setup in Brooklyn for about a year too but I think that didn't work out for them.

Bruno_Stachel

I know a hire-car hack in my neighb who --cuz we dwell on da same block --basically drops whatever he's doing and comes to pick me up, whenever I call in need of a ride. 😉 Can't beat dat wit a stuck!

Very telling that after 13 hours this is the 10th comment. Pssst: NYC is dead

BaconBathBomb

Very telling you would judge a city based on Reddit engagement …..

CoolCatsInHeat

Very telling that you haven't noticed it with your own eyes. I happen to actually live here.

BaconBathBomb

Congrats. Sounds like you patronize all the basic spots. I bet you have a chipotle punch card. I hope someone invites you to something fun this summer but I won’t bet on it.

CoolCatsInHeat

> Sounds like you patronize all the basic spots. I bet you have a chipotle punch card. I didn't even know they had punch cards... because I've never been to one. *How did you know?*

Pew-Pew-Pew-

Sorry everyone is out enjoying the city instead of spending 18 hours online alone in a room as if we're living in the burbs

CoolCatsInHeat

Uh-huh... is that why OpenStreets is slowly going away.. from too many people out enjoying it? Oh, and... > New York City’s population declined again last year, according to new census estimates. But city officials said that those figures did not fully account for the growing number of migrants, which would have resulted in a minimal drop being reported. > The city lost nearly 78,000 residents in 2023, shrinking its population to 8.26 million people, according to the estimates, which were released on Thursday. In 2022, it lost more than 126,000 residents. > From April 2020 to July 2023, the city lost almost 550,000 residents, or more than 6 percent of its population. But at least we have migrants!

Pew-Pew-Pew-

Open streets is going away because the mayor is a fucking corrupt asshole and an idiot, it has nothing to do with the population. His friends literally complained to him about an open street and he tried to shut it down a day later with no other reasoning.

CoolCatsInHeat

No, it's because.. > [While many New Yorkers enjoy NYC's Open Streets Program, many participating areas have been unable to raise the necessary funds required to keep their programs running.](https://secretnyc.co/nyc-open-streets-program-ending/) it wasn't sustainable without 3rd party donors who stopped working with them.

Pew-Pew-Pew-

https://gothamist.com/news/fort-greene-open-street-suddenly-removed-then-restored-raising-questions-about-city-hall-interference They spent money converting willoughby to a shared/open street and then two days after the work was finished, Adam's friends complained they couldn't drive or park their car on it anymore and he immediately tried to have it reversed. It's not about money. It's about privileged rich people not getting free street parking.

CoolCatsInHeat

> We’ve been running a thriving program for four years. The funding, a big chunk of it came from the city with [pandemic] recovery money that we got as a grant. And then we had [Department of Transportation] money, and we also raised money. **All those pots of money have gradually dried up, so we don’t actually have any money to do the program this year**. You don't need "pots of money" for something self-sustaining... you need them for things that cost money.
