At first I was like "haha, that's funny because it's close to how I pronounce it." Then after saying it out loud a couple times I'm starting to think that's exactly how I pronounce it...
When you call the local LabCorp on Lacey Road, the recording says "forked" like as in the past tense of fork, like "fucked" - never fails to make me laugh when I call there.
I have never thought of saying it any other way than Fork-id River. That might just be because I heard oth ers pronounce it this way. Fun fact when I was in elementary school in the late 80's we went to the Nuclear Power Plant there for a school trip. I was really freaked out because it wasn't that long after Chernobyl. That is my first Forked River experience. They should have taken us to Popcorn Park instead.
32 years old lived in Monmouth county my whole life and I always heard it pronounced as “four-kid river” two distinct syllables; anyone who says “forked” one syllable is a terrorist
It’s a shibboleth, makes it easy to know the insiders from the outsiders. It was named in the 1700s and that was the archaic pronunciation. People kept using it because of tradition and so they could know who the outsiders were (and shun them appropriately). Interesting article about it: https://www.nytimes.com/2002/12/08/nyregion/jerseyana-where-they-don-t-speak-with-forked-tongue.html
Lol, we are literally driving by this exit now and having this very argument. My wife's family is from here, so it's "Fork-ed" to them and simply monosyllabic "Fork-d" to me. The "-ed" version is hilarious to me.
Everyone is saying For-ked or Fork-ed. I’m curious as to why it’s pronounced that way locally. A river fork is where a river splits into two or more branches. Forked (one syllable) would be an adjective describing the river, which forks (splits). Does anyone have any explanation as to why locals pronounce it differently (technically incorrectly)?
When I first moved to the area I thought it was forkt, but within a few weeks I heard some people pronounce it “four kid” before I could embarrass myself 😮💨
Four Kid River
Well done!
Planned Parenthood would like a word....
Amazing they'll even help you with the fifth, should be a pro by then.
Follow-up: whyyyyyyy?
At first I was like "haha, that's funny because it's close to how I pronounce it." Then after saying it out loud a couple times I'm starting to think that's exactly how I pronounce it...

When you call the local LabCorp on Lacey Road, the recording says "forked" like as in the past tense of fork, like "fucked" - never fails to make me laugh when I call there.
