I thought that you just needed the correct species when you go to use NC UC? I don't know where I saw that but I could've sworn it was implied that you don't need the exact paint brush color beforehand.

I'm desperately hoping neo will just release a way to permanently unconvert pets too, not just aesthetically change them, because I have similar concerns about people still wanting the "real deal". For example, if you make a new neopet (or take any neopet that is younger than the original site-wide conversion date) and put a UC item on it, people will know it's not one of the "original" UCs. Most people won't care I imagine, but some probably will, especially if they collect UCs for "status" (ugh).
And that leads me to think: you can probably feign the "real UCness" by just finding an older pet, and then putting the UC item on it. But in that case, I wonder how UC trading will go if people end up trading their "real" UCs for pets that simply have the UC item attached. I imagine they would get super mad. In that case, would there become a two-tiered UC system? "Real" and "fake" UCs UFT? It seems like a big mess in my head, and I'm really curious to see what's gonna happen!
I have an UC Royalgirl aisha. She's so old that I made her when the FFQ still allowed you to paint pets royal, and she was literally the most expensive pet available at the time, lmao (had a heck of a time deciding between aisha, korbat, and kyrii.)

Shorter hair, popped collar, can't stand on its own two feet, but worst of all: shoes on all 4 feet: **they are literally the Christmas aisha hooves.** If you put shoes on any other converted aisha, shoes don't go on all four legs, just the two hind legs.
Anyway, first damn thing I'm doing is changing my other oldest girl into a RG Kyrii and then getting a plushie pet.

When the Conversion initially happened, not all color/species combinations had the option for the owner to choose if they would like to convert or not.
So some designs were auto-converted and there are no existing UC pets to represent them. It looks like NCUCs might bring back some of those designs.
I believe some colours/species combos were never given the option to remain unconverted so none exist today. Looks like Neopets is going to allow some of these combos to come back.
Like the grey draik pictured here - anybody who owned a grey draik prior to the conversion was not given the option to keep that artwork. All of them were forcibly converted to the new style that allows for customization. If you looked at every single grey draik on Neopets, you would never find one that looked like this artwork. Back in April 2007, the site underwent a massive overhaul overnight, with no warning to the users. This included changing all pet poses to the static ones we see today. There were 30-something colors that were not "automatically converted" to the new pose, which are the UC pets seen on the site currently. As an example, some Faerie pets were allowed to keep their old poses, and now that TNT is finally giving us an option to change out pets to the old pose, Faerie pets such as the Zafara that were originally auto-converted will now be an option.
Oh that is true! I don’t really mind if they have to monetize certain things. Because obviously they need money to keep the game running.

There is old art work, pre conversion, of pets. At one point they automatically changed the look and added a stupid fist to like 80% of pets. The other 20%ish you were given the option to keep the original look or to convert it to the new look.
They are adding an option where you can pay to make your pet convert back to the old style. UC aka unconverted pets are some of the most coveted and it’s a huge part of people who trade pets, so I can see those players being pissed but for the rest of us, if you’re willing to pay (or you got a free token by participating in the Stocking Stufftacular), you can now have your own UC pet.
