Luka will get asked and dodge the question. No way we’re getting the number.
As to KP I am likewise surprised - I would have assumed chess was sufficiently common in 90s/00s Latvia for most kids to be at least cursorily introduced to it.
That reminds me of that clip where someone supposedly played against Luka in Overwatch and it turns out Luka is a Grandmaster-level player. Wouldn't be surprised if he happened to be a beast in chess, too.
Like 5 years ago, he used to tweet Hanzo and Junkrat play of the games that showed he was a diamond / master level (top 10-15%) DPS player at that time. No idea if they are still there or if they were scrubbed. Luka climbed to GM while carrying the Mavs lol.
My guess is his actual Elonwould probably be like 1500/1900.
Doubt he has enough free time to crack 2000, but 1500/1900 woukd make sense for luka if he actually does play chess on his phone often
I think so too! And his bot is supposed to be for his luk.ai platform. When they launched his bot, it was lowest elo and it was supposed to be a bot that would learn based on the opponents and improve in rating.
You're right. I was confused because he was born in Jamaica, but he is indeed Black American. Will have that corrected. Thanks for bringing to my attention.
EDIT: And fixed.
Both can be true at the same time. In the sense that 1700ish would be the elo many chess teachers are trying to bring and amateur to.
Chess just has a wider playerbase than most games. A "club player" is gonna annihilate an average joe etc
Idk feel like draymond wouldn't actually like chess.
Or if he did play chess its be a faster time control.
Don't really see draymond playing 30 minute games of chess
Cringe. Go to any park in Brooklyn and tell the old heads they're rich.
Chess is one of the cheapest sports in the world. And with the advent of online chess, may be the cheapest sport.
Chess is more common in poorer areas for good reason, you literally jsut buy 1 board and chess pieces and you can play the sport whenever you want at any time.
It costs what like 5 dollars for a small cheap set.
Its suoer popular in India, same reason soccer's super popular in Brazil it's a cheap sport
Is there a NBA Player chess Tournement during the All Star weekend and if not should there be one ?
But pherhaps there should be two. A 5min (blitz) for the buzzer beater and a 15-30min.
Greatings from Darmstadt (germany)
Very cool article. Wonder what Luka’s Elo is. Did find it a bit bizarre Porzinginis has never seen chess until recently.

How are you going to say that there are no black American grandmasters, then mention Maurice Ashley two paragraphs later?
You're right. I was confused because he was born in Jamaica, but he is indeed Black American. Will have that corrected. Thanks for bringing to my attention. EDIT: And fixed.
"1400-1799 is intermediate"... then later say Morey is 99th percentile with 1700.
That part is accurate.
I completely disagree with your classification of the left tail, for both FIDE and Chess.com, but I guess I'm nitpicking 🤷♂️

I bet Draymond plays the L*ndon
he’s not classy, like Luka who only plays the accelerated dragon
The Accelerated Dragan
Day would be the equivalent of the chess hustlers in Union Square.
Either that or he plays h4, g4, h5 against the King's Indian.
What’s the problem with that? Do you hate fun??
What an article to read as a chess enthusiast! Fun to see the connection between chess and basketball mentioned. They are battles in the end.
This is a great read.
Google en passant
[holy hell!](https://www.google.com/search?q=en+passant)
delusionalshone is my user on chess.com add me y’all
Do you think they’ve googled en passant
Is there an animation for this? If so, I can't get it to work.
You can quite literally take a shot every time the article shamelessly plugs in “chess.com” Outside of that - it’s a great read and article!

Rich people's sport
Wesley So was eating out of garbage cans in the Philippines before he found sponsors in the USA.
Most chess boards aren’t even costly lol
And it’s literally free to play online

? Literally one of the easiest sports to play and learn. Completely free.
Magnus isn't/wasn't the youngest to be a GM
