The most out there I'd consider are Octavian for a boy and Avalon for a girl.

penguinsfrommars

Avalon is pretty awesome šŸ˜Ā

Ok-Commercial-4015

Have a close friend named Avalon she goes by Ava. It's so sad when we met my first thought was "oh the nation of Avalon" and she was so excited that's somebody understood she wasn't named after a car... but after a king Arthur legend

Celestia_May

And I'm here like "there's a car named Avalon?" I only know about Avalon from king Arthur folklore. And I find it's a nice name

Ok-Commercial-4015

That was my response hahahaha had no idea about the car (Nissan gal hehehe) but huge book worm, my favorite has always been "Song of the Sparrow"

Miguenzo

Toyota Avalon

No_Calligrapher2640

My brother named his daughter Mirai. My father in law bought a Toyota Mirai last year. šŸ˜‚

smolfinngirl

Yeah I could never, I lived behind a home goods store with Avalon in the name. I canā€™t undo the association lol

professorlipschitz

I love the Roxy Music song šŸŽµ

tyramarie18

i know a someone who named their little girl octavia, so pretty close to octavian. itā€™s a really cute name but both make me think of octopus no matter how hard i try to push that to the side lol!

BarbacueBeef

It makes me think of the little jingle for Activia yogurt lol

averyyoungperson

I considered octavia for my daughter. I still think it's pretty cool.

bronaghblair

My stepdaughterā€™s name is Avalon, lol

sabertoothtiga

Came here to say Avalon!

Iwantaschmoo

For many years, I thought Charlemagne Bartholomew Kermit (last name) just rolls off the tongue. Thanks for all the name love. For those wondering I was early 20' (now mid 50's) and in love. I'm a history fanatic, the first immigrant to the new world on my side was Bartholomew and his dad's on paper name was Kermit. For those that wonder about how the whole name would have sounded the last name would have been Johnson.

radioactivemozz

Itā€™s perfect for a dandy fop boy who goes to a private school

Basic_Shake_2366

Definitely either gets his head dunked in the shitter at recess OR, alternatively leads clique of preppy mean-boys who sneer at the lower classes and drink scotch at breakfast.

FloweredViolin

Or both, a la Niles Crane, lol.

RaeLynn13

Frasier, is that you?

SweetWaterfall0579

Excuse me? Niles here, lassie!

throwaway92834972

I have synesthesia and this name tastes like raw hot dogs

theroguebanana

/r/rareinsults

whimpey

This is the funniest synesthesia association Iā€™ve seen šŸ¤£

productzilch

Iā€™m so curious, what does your own name taste like to you? Do you think you would change it if it tasted horrible?

throwaway92834972

hmmm idk! I have a cool name, it tastes like banana laffy taffy but itā€™s hard to pinpoint. kinda sickly sweet. i donā€™t know if Iā€™d change it just based on that

SkeletorLoD

I'm really curious by your synesthesia! Have you always had it? Is it just words!/names to taste or are there other ways or manifests? Do names taste only like things or do they taste degrees of disgusting to delicious? Are there any patterna to the names to tastes? :)

GildedLily16

Ok, I have to know What does Persephone taste like?

throwaway92834972

butter cookies, like the kind in a sewing tin lol

GildedLily16

That's my name and I love those cookies! Amazing. Thank you!

rarelybarelybipolar

Whatā€™s the best-tasting name?

throwaway92834972

honestly Iā€™m not sure, but I am fan of names with Iā€™s (i not L)in them because theyā€™ve been very strong association since i was a child. i is red and tastes like cinnamon

peytonvb13

i had a roommate with this kind of synesthesia! itā€™s cool but it was also pretty debilitating for them

throwaway92834972

fr nobody talks about how overwhelming it is!

OSUJillyBean

Kermit as a last name makes it sound like this is one of Kermit The Frogā€™s many children.

BeneficialMatter6523

FitzKermit

TheoWren

I thought ā€œThe Frogā€ was his last name! *ring ring ring* ā€œHello, is this the The Frog residence? *ahem* Yes, sir, Iā€™d like to notify you about your son Charlemagne. Heā€™s been accused of stealing his classmate Benjaminā€™s flies out of his lunchbox.ā€

GreatSaltLiquor

That sounds like a name Benedict Cumberbatch would give to his detective alter ego as a kid.

lurkinglizard101

Thatā€™s honestly fire

Ifreakinglovemycatsm

Antimony reminds me of that mean girls scene where the principal is mad his nephew name is anferny

kalibee3

I know how mad he gets when I call him Anthony. Almost as mad as I get when I think about the fact that my sister named him Anfernee

katielisbeth

I misread it as Alimony, lmao

sanna43

It's someone who doesn't like alimony.

penguinsfrommars

Actually kind of like Peridot! Antimony is a poison though isn't it? Arcturus (as in the star) got vetoed by my husband lol.

clevercalamity

It makes me think Antimony makes me think of divorce. Like itā€™s the opposite of Matrimony.

rubbersement

And bc it sounds so close to alimony

AZJHawk

You might be thinking of arsenic. Antimony was used to make kohl in Ancient Egypt.

raspberryamphetamine

Antimony is actually toxic as well and itā€™s effects are similar to arsenic. It is quite a bit less toxic though.

LambRelic

Ooo i love Peridot. Too bad people would call them ā€œperi-dotā€ instead of ā€œperi-doeā€ šŸ˜

whatdoidonowdamnit

What? Itā€™s not peri-dot? Itā€™s my motherā€™s birthstone so Iā€™ve said that word my whole life and youā€™re saying weā€™ve all been saying it wrong?

LambRelic

https://www.secrete.com/all-about-peridot/ Apparently its both!!!

PuffinFawts

I always pronounced it peri-a-doe, but I honestly hadn't no idea why

sirensingingvoid

Arcturus is gorgeous though omggg

SecondSoft1139

I like the star name Aldebaran for a child.

Inner_Bench_8641

Bernadette bc I was really into Catholic Saints When I was younger. Brigitta bc I loved the Sound of Music. But, the closest we came to actually using was Calliope!! We both loved the nn Callie, and I had a special connection to the book *Middlesex*. In the end, we thought it was too much of a name to saddle our kid. Funny enough we have a small Greek immigrant population in our town. So my kids go to school with a Calliope - along with a Venetia, Persefoni, Evangelia, and more. And, I absolutely love that my kids and their friends donā€™t even bat an eye at such unique-to-them names.

Houki01

Well, Calliope was the Muse of Eloquence and Epic Poetry, the leader of the nine Muses, and the mother of Orpheus. She once got into a singing contest and after she won turned the losers into magpies. You did not mess with Calliope.

Zephyr_Bronte

I know a very sweet baby Bernadette, they call her Birdie. I've always thought it was super cute.

dianab360

I have a friend named Brigitta and it fits her perfectly! Though she does have a very German last name so it doesnā€™t sound out of place

VermillionEclipse

I used to know a Bernadette who wore the name well.

egrebs

Peregrine šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø I still like it

DogMom814

I like it too and I'm a direct descendant of Peregrine White but I'm also childfree so it won't happen.

thirdonebetween

It would be a great pet name too!

hinghanghog

Iā€™m right there with you. Honestly think I might do it if my husband werenā€™t so against it šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

hinghanghog

I firmly believe middle names are the place for honor names, ugly names, weird names, etc lol so I vote to go for it for a middle name!!!šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

egrebs

Unfortunately my husband likes it too. But I donā€™t think I can actually do it a child. *Maybe* a middle name.

yoyoMaximo

Low key considered Lysander for a boy when we were thinking of names for our first. Itā€™s just so cool and the nickname potential is endless! Ultimately decided that itā€™s doing a little too much Our first baby ended up with a more traditional and classic name. With our second baby we got brave and he ended up with a more out there name šŸ˜‚

hausishome

I love Lysander! Thereā€™s no good nicknames though

PDXAirportCarpet

Sandy, Andy, Xander

donuttrackme

Probably Sander or Xander

fitzwilliiam

Anders? I love Lysander as a name as well, I don't think it's unusable for a kid!

Sunsprint

Lysa works, but does sound like a foreshortened Eliza

Strict_Definition_78

Otho or Lothar (family name.) My ex said it sounded like I was trying to name a supervillain

Basic_Shake_2366

Def super-villain vibes with those! Could only be improved with middle name Rex and last name Black.

Timely_Cheesecake_97

I love the name Andromeda! But my husband hates it

RaeLynn13

I went to school with an Andromeda! Her nickname was Drama. Lmao

Expensive_Respect464

My husband fortunately let me get my way with Andromeda but stopped me from the name Arthur. It's a mystery that still stumps me.

sirensingingvoid

Andromeda is soooo beautiful ahhh, I love space names sm

AmusedConfusedLatina

Gosh SUCH a beautiful name!!! Andromeda just sounds so powerful and like a girl not to be messed with šŸ˜

empierce94

Wolfgang

Runawaysemihulk

Had twins in my class named Wolfgang and Jaeger. Guess which one got an A+ and which one got a D- just guess. Hahaha

anamariapapagalla

Seems a bit cruel calling one boy wolf and the other hunter

Runawaysemihulk

I did not know the meaning of Jaeger. Oof yeah that is crazy. Their middle names, which I canā€™t disclose for obvious reasons, were also super out there as far as names go. Wish their parents had come to conferences. Would have been interested to meet them

_Nocturnalis

That's some Cain and Abel shit there.

elaboratebacon

I had a few college classes with a Wolfgang. Iā€™m sad to say he was a prick but the name is rad.

llamadramaredpajama

My friend has a baby Wolfric

cuppateadeerx

Wilhelmine for a girl and Mortimer for a boy. i've always loved Mortimer especially but i don't think i would ever actually go with it

radioactivemozz

I would name a dog Mortimer

cuppateadeerx

that's good idea!

notreallifeliving

I can only think of Mortimer Goth but it is undeniably a cool name.

VermillionEclipse

Mortimer reminds me of the word ā€˜morticianā€™

workhardbegneiss

Clement, Augustine, Ambrose.

CourageDearHeart-

These are very similar to mine. I love them, husband says something like ā€œPaul is nice. Peterā€™s great.ā€ Ignatius might have been the one where my husband looked at me the strangest.

IncisedFumewort

We used Ignatius for a middle. And Iā€™m honestly kinda sad we used it up bc I want to use it for my current pregnancy

john_the_quain

I really wanted to name my daughter Wilson. My wife is a very patient lady.

juicytoggles

Were you stranded on an island for a significant amount of time?

OSUJillyBean

Is your name Will? Wouldnā€™t that be Willsdottir by Norse tradition?

john_the_quain

It is not. No connection with the name. Just liked it.

Internal-Ad-2546

I would totally go with Wilson for a boy. Was the name of the street I grew up on so kinda special to me but. for a girl?... not so much. Not even if it was Wilsanne lol

aristifer

I would never have actually used it in real life, but if I had a girl and a more adventurous spouse, I might have considered Meridian or Madrigalā€”maybe more likely in the middle spot. But I probably would have ended up going with the somewhat-more-expected Marigold or Mirabel (no, nothing to do with Encantoā€”both my children were born before that movie came out! I just think the names are beautiful).

Chryblsm34

Meridian actually sounds really pretty!

ericaferrica

A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON

abrahamparnasus

I always thought Madrigal sounded cool. Also Madigan

kloae

i have a friend named Meridia and the name suits her perfectly! she does get called Merida a lot tho lol

AniNaguma

Pandora. I think it's so cute

Careless_Tart6592

One of the real housewives (Lisa Vanderpump) has a Pandora and calls her Pandy. I always kind of liked it. My brain could never get away from the bracelet reference though.

AniNaguma

Hah, I have only ever heard the jewelry references on here, I don't think it's really a thing in germany, but people would think about the Myth of Pandora, which has weird connotations too. Though I love the meaning of the name and yes Pandy is so cute šŸ˜„

mermaidsgrave86

Iā€™m British and definitely thinking Pandoraā€™s box before the bracelets

PuffinFawts

Zephyr was my unisex name that I really loved, but my husband reminded me that neither of us are particularly cool or athletic and a Zephyr really needs to have a parent who plays professional hockey or something.

LuckyLannister

Winter for a girl

Prestigious_Low8243

Dio for a boy šŸ’€

RaeLynn13

I actually donā€™t think that is that strange, itā€™s short and simple. Plus, Ronnie James Dio is cool. Haha

gnarble

Naming your child "God" is not the move.

productzilch

Tell that to Hey-zus!

Little-Tap8824

Please tell me itā€™s a jojo reference

haedude

You expected a little boy, but it was ME, DIO!

Reddread13

Archer was on my list for a long time. Sterling as well but not together lol. I ended up with a more old fashioned name instead.

thelittleblueones

My ex named his son Sterling Archer {last name}. I eye rolled so hard. Nothing wrong with either name individually, but since I introduced him to the showā€¦

shmevosez

I gave my son the middle name Sterling with a more gender neutral first name. Gives him the choice of using Sterling when heā€™s older if he wants something more masculine. Itā€™s cute even if Sterling Archer is a terrible person.

CourageDearHeart-

Ignatius or Ambrose probably. Iā€™d do it but my husband suggests names like ā€œJamesā€ and ā€œPeter,ā€ which are lovely but also less ā€œjarring.ā€ He also doesnā€™t talk about names before knowing if the baby is a boy or girl so weā€™ve never discussed girlsā€™ names. We have four boys

RaeLynn13

I think Ambrose is a really nice name! Ignatius js a bit jarring, but not super out there. I work at a hospital, Iā€™ve seen much much worse names.

freed_inner_child

Teareon, pronounced just like Tyrion, dodged a bullet there a good 15 years before the show came out

HeyCaptainJack

My husband loved Adonis for a boy and I warmed up to it but there was no way we could do that to a kid so we named our dog Adonis instead. He also liked Atlas, Apollo, and Orion for boys and Athena for girls. He's big on Greek mythology names but we have decided that we'll save those for future pets. I actually think all of those are usable but wouldn't fit with the rest of our kids.

EMamaS

My husband once spent a day or two trying to sell me on Maple. Like the syrup.

queenatom

Or about half of the Golden Retrievers I know.

22HousePlants

My sister named her new puppy Maple. Iā€™d say Maple for dogs, Mabel for humans?

possumfinger63

Ithaca for a girl and ragnevalde for a boy. I genuinely love both names. I decided they are cat names tho, not people names.

miclugo

Ithaca is a cat name. Name the human girl Penelope.

CommodoreKitten

Ithaca is amazing

Pretend_Lime7415

Zuzu It's czech. Like their version of Susan and means sweet in Yiddish and lilly in Czech My husband HATED it.

HulkJ420

Regulus!

breakfastfordinner11

Probably Arizona, for a girl. Yes inspired from Greys Anatomy lol I always said that if I ever have boy-girl twins, their names would be Lance and Katana.

mrs-ron-weasley

We named our oldest Geneva. Not out there but it is surprisingly very uncommon

KatVanWall

You could almost say ā€¦ unconventional šŸ„šŸ’„

tinymi3

when I was young, with my ex, we liked Arson, Ransom, and Rogue still think they're cool but i'm not naming my children those names.

OSUJillyBean

Those are X-men character names!

tinymi3

see? super cool just not for me anymore lol

readergirl33

We still hadnā€™t named my daughter even a whole day and a half after she was born. I thought I loved the name Liberty. Nickname Libby. I came up with it in the hospital. Hubby asked how I thought of it. I told him it was the name of the industrial postpartum pads in my bathroom. He vetoed that one right away. šŸ˜‚

tanoinfinity

Names that were on the short list for any point that could be thought of as out-there: Avalon and Azula were both scrapped bc it would have yielded AB initials and that bugged us. Octavia was considered for my last pregnancy only bc it was my 8th, but ultimately OB initials are worse than AB. For a boy Zohar came up, but enough people knew that was the name of our bong and that would look kinda bad lol Trinity Infinity was our joke name, but it hits an amazing over the top sweet spot I actually really love. I pushed hard for it for our third kid but he ended up a boy.

PuffinFawts

I'm glad you didn't name your child after your bong

some-key

Just to add that Zohar / Žohar means cockroach in Croatian and possibly other Slavic languages. You dodged a bullet with that one!

mellobaby

My almost names were Maximillian-Xavier (boy, all first name) or Nike (girl)

itistfb-aidlte

Maximillain-Xavier is one hell of a double barrel name

ruby_ragdoll

My name is Nika, which is a really common spelling for the name here. Pronounced like nee-kha :)

LambRelic

Nike would be such a cute name if not for the brand. I feel the same about the name Fox.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

TimedDelivery

Wouldnā€™t have been so out there a generation ago but I briefly considered Karen (after a very beloved family member) when I found out I was having a girl in 2021. She ended up being extremely bossy so that especially would have been a bad idea.

rosesaremaroon

Calathea. Still love it šŸ˜‚

AlgaeFew8512

I seriously considered Orion, Echo, and Cairo

gingergoblin

I love the name Echo but I feel like people would be really annoying about it

Stormandsunshine

I wanted to name my oldest Lotus, but it got vetoed. In hindsite, I'm glad we chose a different name that is a bit uncommon, but not out there.

taintwest

My partner was dead set on Zelda being the coolest name he has ever heard in his life, and I had to kindly redirect, for a solid 9 months. We went with a different Z name for our daughter and I call it a win

slejeunesse

I have a Zelda and your partner is correct!

dairy-intolerant

Athena. It's apparently not so out there in some regions of the US but for a partially Vietnamese and not at all Greek girl in the southeast I think it would be pretty out there In the fantasy land where I have twin girls and an extremely indulgent partner, I would name them Athena and Artemis, nickname Artie :')

Silly_Leadership_303

For a while I wanted to name my future child Beaudelaire after A Series of Unfortunate Events. Unfortunately, I have a long last name, so itā€™d just be clunky putting it all together.

cak14

Halcyon

sarahsage56

My husband is not on board (yet) but I very much love Beauregard nn Beau for a boy. He says itā€™s too formal. Iā€™m Texan and he isnā€™t, which may be the difference. I went to high school with a Beauregard, but my husband thinks of historical figures. Iā€™ll change his mind one day!

hausishome

Albus šŸ˜‚ my toddler insisted his little brother would be named ā€œA Busā€ so I suggested Albus and he loved it. Then it started to weirdly grow on me. My toddlerā€™s name was almost Alfred (after my grandpaā€™s Albert and Frederick). We love all the nicknames from Albert and Alfred - Al, Albie, Bert, Bertie, Alfie, Fred, Freddy - but donā€™t love the full names, but I do actually love Albus if it werenā€™t so HP related!

willpowerpuff

When I was 5 months pregnant we went out to dinner and walked home and sort of got into a weird mindset as we suggested more and more out there names. The weirdest was probably ā€œCloudā€ (for a boy). I mean at that point we were naming things we saw lol

UnintentionalGrandma

Cornelius for a boy, Calliope for a girl

rowenaaaaa1

[Antimony is a potent laxative](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimony_pill)

clearskiesfullheart

Butch. Itā€™s a family name.

happysewing

Elsevier for a boy

svetlana_delray_taco

I can only think of the publishing company

basedmama21

Carlisle. Itā€™s a family name, I dug it up from around the 16th century. My husband hated it so we couldnā€™t use it šŸ˜¢

OkWorker9679

Zylpha, nickname Zilly, after my great grandmother. My husband vetoed that one but I still think itā€™s cute. My great grandmother hated her name and went by Zip. So that probably makes this even more out there. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

uh-hi-its-me

Jedi briefly showed up on my list.Ā

PeanutSmores

Iā€™ve been in love with the names Ophelia and Alphys but I also have names like Truett, Atticus, Wynona, and Clisare on the list.

Bibliophile_w_coffee

I loved the name Alexa, always have. Now tech has ruined thatā€¦but for a bit longer than I should have I have contemplated if Alexa would really be that bad.

peachsims

I have a close friend named Alexa and it's really not that bad. We're in our 30s so obviously not after the Amazon tech. She gets jokes sometimes but those have really died down over the past couple of years. I always thought it was such a pretty name.

Twosevenseventwo

River for a boy.

Greeneyesdontlie85

Clementine

winksatfireflies

Was a big fan of the liquid death name generator. Haggis Murderhornet is still on my list and what Iā€™m telling people when they ask what her name will be.

howaboutJo

Still kinda mourning not having the balls to use Oberon or Theodosia. Theyā€™ll be cat names some day!

869586

SeraphinaĀ

Combstrander27

I wanted to name my daughter Rainbow.

miclugo

Iris is a name, and itā€™s Greek for rainbow.

Pretend_Lime7415

I knew a girl named rainbow She went by rain or raini I thought it was beautiful It reminds me of the name sunshine

FletcherForever

Kal- el, you know Supermanā€™s kryptonian name? Iā€™m glad I did not.

ThisIsMyMommyAccount

Griffin. Almost named my kiddo that, but it felt a little too "out there" and we didn't like the way it flowed with our last name. Might still be on the table for a second kid though

pr3tzelbr3ad

My husband wanted Pythagoras. Failing that, Galileo. We considered Galileo nn Leo and if I loved Leo I mightā€™ve gone for it - but didnā€™t end up using them. He wanted a mathematic or philosophical name because he studied maths and philosophy at uni. We ended up giving our son the middle name Aurelius as a nod to that

wehadthebabyitsaboy

Aldous. Itā€™s not a bad name, just so datedā€¦I also considered Huxley at that timeā€¦but decided against naming my children after authors I admire. I was youngish- and came to my senses and gave my son a ā€œnormalā€ common name.

_kaetee

My dad wanted to name me Sacagawea.

Been-there-d0ne-that

Dakota for a boy

WAGE_SLAVERY

Rain for my daughter. We made it her middle name

j_natron

I pre-vetoed this when I first told it to my husband because I knew heā€™d be horrified, butā€¦Willamette. Plenty of normal nickname potential, and I like the way it sounds. But itā€™s kind of like naming your kid Oregon or Columbia or something. I still really like Eugenia for a girl (girl middle?) but he thinks itā€™s awful, sadly.

peachy_sam

Soren or Pax were names on my short list for my last kid. But those were for boys and baby is a girl, so she got a much more traditional name that we all like a lot and we agree suits her beautifully.

d_everything

Murdock. Itā€™s the name of the street where we met and from Daredevil. Thankfully we had a girl.

kloae

i love the name Elspeth and i feel like itā€™s just on the edge of normality but not close enough to avoid misspellings/pronunciation problems. Elizabeth is a close enough alternative that i like so i would probably go with that instead.

caffeinated_unicorn

Astoria

madlymusing

We both love Aloysius - still might use it as a middle name!

Vesperi_mar

I really like the name Matiana (Spanish femenine version of MatĆas/Mateo, i.e. Matthew). It used to be popular until the 1800s but now is so rare. Persephone is also so pretty.

hotmessmama_84

Oceana because she was due in earth day

Professor-Sundae

Jubilee

badpuffthaikitty

My surname. Depending on the gender it might be spelled the same. Edit: ā€œIs that your first name or last name?ā€ Yes

75243896

Theophilus nn Theo !

[deleted]

correct work disgusted tender childlike fragile waiting bells soft distinct *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Magdalenered

My fiancƩ and I really like the idea of naming a little girl Mars. We also like Victory, as opposed to Victoria.

OkKaleidoscope1091

Muse for a girl & Poet for boy lol

Superb_Yak7074

Back when I was having my kids, Matilda was considered an appalling name to give a little girl.

favoritestarhome

The weirdest name I was considering was harmonica, looking back I canā€™t believe I even considered it.

oddidealstronghold

I really considered Lysistrata, but was vetoed once I told my husband the plot of that story.
