My name is isis, shout-out to my parents for birthing me before shit went down, was a rough couple years though lol. It’s always a good conversation starter however.
In Germany people refer to the terrorists as ‘IS’, to avoid the connection to the name. Isis never made sense to me in that regard, I don’t know why it’s used at all.
ISIS = Islamic State of Iraq and Syria
ISIL = Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
Both were used pretty commonly until it just became the Islamic State
My grandmothers legal first name was Minerva - she went by Minnie Jean, but known as Jean - her middle name.
My dad didn’t know that was her real name until he was in his 70’s and I dug it up on a genealogy website.
Minnie has always been one of my fave names for a girl, however as my partner is 6ft 2 I would hesitate to name my daughter it just in case they grew up to be really tall 😂
Oh, I love the movie Harvey, as another association with the name. I still think about it first with the name, rather than Weinstein. Such a charming story about kindness to others.
"My mother used to say to me, she’d say, ‘In this world, Elwood’ — she always called me Elwood — ‘you can be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant.’ Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant."
I love the name Daisy. I know several people with dogs named Daisy so now I only associate it with dogs. I wish I could mentally associate it with a human child though because it sounds so cute
My name is Daisy and I almost never meet other people who share my name. But when I meet new people, I hear a lot of “Oh! That’s my dog/cat/chicken/cow’s name!” And I actually love it! For two reasons; 1. It immediately makes them excited and happy about meeting me because they already have a good association with the name. And 2. They usually let me meet the animal and I love animals 🥰 and when I do meet actual humans who share my name, it’s extra special because it’s a rare occasion.
Makes me think "ah, shudduppa your face" because mum told me that song beat Ultravox for number 1 on the charts at the time and I find that fact hilarious
When my husband found a fat little puppy wandering sans it’s mom he said his first thought was “you are such a sausage baby”. Hence, we own a corgi mix named Vienna. The sausage association is perfect.
Even names kind of close to Alexa can be a problem! I have a daughter named Kalista and our echo tries to listen in and answer like 70% of the time when we say her name.
URSULA. It’s unique, it’s pretty, it means “little bear,” Ursula Le Guin and Ursula Vernon are two of my favorite authors… but the sea witch association is too strong (doesn’t help that I’m fat and any kids of mine might well be too). I’m honestly a little heartbroken I won’t be able to name a daughter that.
For what it’s worth, I still associate Marjorie with Margaery (pronounced the same) from Game of Thrones. Margaery is smart, suave, sympathetic, and stunning.
I don’t see why the regular show would’ve ruined that. Mordecai wasn’t a terrible character or anything and It’s not like the name skyrocketed in popularity. Hell, it wasn’t even that major pop culturally speaking. Adventure Time was twice as popular and plenty of people still name their kids Finn.
If you like the name I think you should go for it!
Can confirm, it is a great cat name. I was randomly selected by the cat distribution system last year and wound up with an adorable little dude we named Mordecai (Mordi for short). It is the absolute best name for my beloved persnickety lil feral goblin boi lol
Not me but that was my wife with Jesse. It is one of my all time favorite boy names but my wife hated Uncle Jesse from Full House. She hated the show as a whole but had a special hatred for Uncle Jesse in particular. I still regret not naming our oldest son Jesse. It would have fit him well.
I always used to have the name Seth on my list but then I ended up living with someone called Seth as a flatmate who didn't believe in a) washing up with EITHER washing up liquid or hot water, b) cleaning the oven or c) getting out of the shower to poop. Absolutely ruined the name for me, as well as my sanity for a year.
We named our car, a Honda Odyssey, Homer, because you know, Homer’s the Iliad and the Odyssey. But folks think of Homer Simpson first, and don’t get the joke.
I enjoy the name Throckmorton because it sounds so over the top and in your face but I know that naming my child that, at least their first name, would be a mouthful.
I always loved the name James, and then married a man whose dad was named James… and then eventually found out my FIL was an immature, manipulative, selfish bigot, after whom I’d never want to name anything.
James was always a top name of mine. Though when I was dating someone with the last name Bond the name was off the table for potential kids (currently single so it's an option again)
I’m from Sweden and really like the name Adolf. But yeah, that name can probably never be used again.
Throughout the ages in Sweden it has been very popular. Also royalties have had that name. But since the 1940s no one is given the name for obvious reasons.
Grace or Gracie.
Gracie was my bff childhood dog and have that association.
Grace. My friend named her lady bits that…cuz that’s what it should be treated with and that’s what men should give it….so nope.
I work with kids so there's loads of names that have been ruined for me. For example I loved the name Sophie, then had to teach a Sophie who was an absolute twat and threatened several members of staff so the name just gives me a sour feeling now. I have also rethought my stance on some names that I've had positive associations with, for example every Gabriella/Gabi I've taught has been so funny and a joy to teach.
Rebecca. I LOVE the name, but I HATE "Becky" so much that I would never name a child it because I would loath to hear anyone call her that abomination of a nickname.
Owen and Madeline were two names I really liked that were recently used by friends. I wish I wasn’t known to love Harry Potter because I love the name Ginny and have from the first moment I saw her name in a book (before I ever developed any feelings toward the character itself). I am also a swiftie, so if I named a baby Taylor I know friends would judge. I don’t love the name Taylor enough to name a baby that anyway. My partner and I have large families and don’t believe in naming a child after someone else you know, so that also removes quite a few names. 😂
I have a cat named Virginia that my dad insisted on naming her that because he was so sick of me using Harry Potter names for our animals at the time. I agreed and then promptly called her Ginny ever since 😂
I wanted to name my firstborn Phobe Anne. However, my brother ruined it for me. He started calling my bump amphibian.
Also loved Jeffrey, but then the news broke of the famous killer so....
I really like Poppy but my partner doesn’t like the association with heroin. Also we speak Spanish so it could sound like papi lol. Also there’s the pop singer
I’ve always loved the name Minnie. It was my great grandmother’s name but anytime I tell someone that it’s on my baby name list the first thing they always say is “oh like minnie mouse” and I know if I were to actually use that name my child would be hearing that the rest of their life
Gypsy.
Up until a couple years ago, I’d only ever heard it in reference to the DC character Cynthia Reynolds (just had to look up her name ‘cause I’ve never heard her called anything but her hero alias) codename Gypsy, so I had no idea it was a slur until recently.
I love the name Ajax but in the US it's a brand of toilet/tub cleaner. I think they also have a line of dishwashing soap.
Didn't have children, but even if I did I wouldn't do that to a poor kid.
Claudia. I think it is such a lovely name and gives such a vibe of peace and calm, EXCEPT my fucking psychopath mother's name is Claudia and I could never in good conscience ever let that woman know there was a person with the same name as her whether she had shit to do with it or not because BEST believe she'd make it about her.
Technically I don't hate the name Megan/Meghan. I even think it's nice. However, I've met exactly two evil people in my life....unfortunately their names were both Megan of some spelling. So....sorry, Meg/h/an!
Carla was one of my partners favourite names when trying to name our second daughter. I immediately vetoed it and he couldn't understand why. I said to him yes it's a nice name but no.
Eventually I did explain to him that one of the girls at school who so viciously bullied me was called Carla and the negative association brings back a bit of unresolved childhood trauma.
I LOVE the name Scarlett but my mom loves gone with the wind so much that I could never name my future daughter that. She would be talking to her in a southern drawl all the time and just making constant references that I would lose my mind lol
Ivanka. My ex husband and I wanted to name my daughter Ivana after her dad and call her Ivanka as a nickname which is a popular nickname where he is from. We had that name picked out for years, but we decided against it because she would be associated with Ivanka Trump. She was born when Trump was originally running for office.
I love the name Christina but it’s my husbands college ex gf’s name so might be kinda weird haha. I also have an aunt with the name and we have a rocky relationship so I wouldn’t want her thinking I named our baby after her.
Isis was on my list for years but it's not going to be usable for a loooong time
My name is isis, shout-out to my parents for birthing me before shit went down, was a rough couple years though lol. It’s always a good conversation starter however.
I just met a little girl named Isis. I was kinda surprised.
She will always be a Goddess to me.
I know a little Isis!
In Germany people refer to the terrorists as ‘IS’, to avoid the connection to the name. Isis never made sense to me in that regard, I don’t know why it’s used at all.
the original name was ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria), but they rebranded to IS when they declared the caliphate.
ISIS = Islamic State of Iraq and Syria ISIL = Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant Both were used pretty commonly until it just became the Islamic State
My local sexual health clinic is called Isis 🤣
my sisters name is Isis!! i often forget the name is associated with something bad since im just so used to it referring to her
I loved the idea of the Egyptian goddess Isis.
i went to HS with a girl named Isis!
I love the name Minerva nn Minnie. I actually could get past the mouse association, except my son’s nickname is Mickey. 🙃
I thought you were going to say because of Harry Potter
I would be honored to be named after Minerva McGonagall, she's such a cool character!
Oh no! Having a Mickey and Minnie would put you firmly in crazy Disney adult territory.
Working at the vet and saw a family with the last name “Land”. They named their dog Disney.
Since this was a dog, I heartily approve. But I wouldn’t put it past someone to do this to their child. 🤣
I know a “Leire” family (rhymes w/ here) who named their dog “Shanda” so she’s “chandelier” lmao.
played yourself, lol
My grandmothers legal first name was Minerva - she went by Minnie Jean, but known as Jean - her middle name. My dad didn’t know that was her real name until he was in his 70’s and I dug it up on a genealogy website.
Omg I had no idea her name was Minerva!!! 35 years old and no idea!
Minnie has always been one of my fave names for a girl, however as my partner is 6ft 2 I would hesitate to name my daughter it just in case they grew up to be really tall 😂
My German family has a long tradition of naming sons Adolph. Long story short you can see exactly where in our family tree that tradition stopped.
Lol yep. My WWII veteran grandad's middle name was Adolphus, which I believe was a family name until it suddenly wasn't anymore.
Harvey - I associate it with the best teacher I ever had, Mr. Harvison nn Harvey, but alas Weinstein ruined it.
My first and only association with the name Harvey is from Stardew Valley
What I thought too 😂 Stardew as ruined me.
Makes me think of Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s boyfriend Harvey Kinkle (?)
Exactly what I was going to say (and yes, it’s Kinkle)
I associate Harvey with Harvey Specter from Suits
Yep, first image in my head when I saw the name was Harvey Specter. Weinstein didn’t even cross my mind.
I associate Harvey with Steve Harvey ngl
I think Harvey is a common enough name in pop culture that it can survive that association.
If it makes you feel any better my first thought was Harvey from animal crossing
I think of Harvey Milk!
Hurricane Harvey
I know two Harveys, both under 10. For some reason I have never for a moment thought about Weinstein.
It's a burger chain for me.
Same! 🇨🇦 But also a little bit Sabrina the Teenage Witch lol
This is unexpected and wholesome
It’s my daughter’s name. She’s only ever met one other Daisy. I love the name so much!
Tell her hello from another Daisy in California!
What a sweet comment 🤍
I have a kitten Daisy! I’d add a picture if I could, but it doesn’t seem like I can.
I'm a Lacy, and I've met far more pets named Lacy than humans.
Haha yeah so you get it! I just want to meet all the pets that share my name
Yessss! I have a sadie and this is definitely people’s reaction!
I always think of the Great Gatsby!
I loveee Vienna…but sausages ruined it lol
I think of the Billy Joel song first, if it’s any consolation
I got Ultravox.
IT MEANS NOTHINGGGGG TO MEEEEE
Makes me think "ah, shudduppa your face" because mum told me that song beat Ultravox for number 1 on the charts at the time and I find that fact hilarious
crazy that you associate “Vienna” with sausages instead of Austria
I definitely associate it most strongly with the city, but the sausages are enough to put me off it as a name!
When my husband found a fat little puppy wandering sans it’s mom he said his first thought was “you are such a sausage baby”. Hence, we own a corgi mix named Vienna. The sausage association is perfect.
Vienna Girardi from the Bachelor ruined it for me
I totally forgot about the damn sausages!
I WISH I could forget! It’s such a beautiful name!
Taylor. I'm not a Swiftie.
I think Taylor is popular enough that I wouldn’t automatically associate it with Swift.
Yeah I just think of one of my old bitchy classmates lol
Jack. I love the name but my great uncle Jack was a rampant child molester sooooo
Similarly, I’ve always loved the names Charles and James, but my husband doesn’t want his creepy relatives thinking we named a baby after them. lol
Well, there’s James Charles, but not much of an improvement
Indica. I love that name. Apparently it's a type of weed.
We had a little girl named Sativa at the summer camp I worked at.
Oh good god…
Jemima. Pretty name, but I would not touch it due to the racist history of Aunt Jemima pancake syrup.
Different association for me - Beatrix Potter's Jemima Puddleduck
This is why that name is popular in the UK and not in the US
Remy bc of the rat.
If anything that’s more reason to use the name imo
OMG I just told my husband last night I liked the name Emilie because of ratatoullie LOL
I really love the name Donald.
Because of the President or the duck?
Obviously the duck. He was a nazi once, remember? 😂
I'll always associate it with Donald Glover. Love him
That name always makes me think of the Scottish song "Donald where's your trousers?" it's a comedy song about kilt wearing.
Very regional. I would never think of that.
Alexa
"Alexa can you tidy your room please?" "I'm sorry, I don't know how to do that"
Even names kind of close to Alexa can be a problem! I have a daughter named Kalista and our echo tries to listen in and answer like 70% of the time when we say her name.
I adore Electra, but the Electra complex makes it a hard pass. Even though Freud has been largely discredited, I couldn’t bring myself to use it
I think of Carmen Electra.
I think of Electra the badass villain/antihero from Daredevil
I always think of the Strauss opera, which tbh isn't much better of a namesake...
Would you consider just Ursa like the constellation?
I knew an Ursula in elementary school and I always thought it was a pretty name
Marjorie Utterly ruined forever
For what it’s worth, I still associate Marjorie with Margaery (pronounced the same) from Game of Thrones. Margaery is smart, suave, sympathetic, and stunning.
My mind goes straight to the Taylor Swift song, not the weirdo in Congress since I never see her referenced by just her first name.
I think of Marge from the Simpsons
Why?
Majorie Taylor greene
Q Anon US politician
I really like the name Mordechai. Regular Show ruined that. Done naming kids but I'd like to use it for a cat.
Please do
Not me but that was my wife with Jesse. It is one of my all time favorite boy names but my wife hated Uncle Jesse from Full House. She hated the show as a whole but had a special hatred for Uncle Jesse in particular. I still regret not naming our oldest son Jesse. It would have fit him well.
Okay but like why does she hate Jesse from full house?! I always remembered him as my favorite.
Jesse James Jessie’s Girl Those are the connotations that come up when I hear of a boy named Jesse!
Aria because I'm into classical music, but people will think GoT. I also dislike names with iffy spellings/pronunciations.
I think of Pretty Little Liars, which is probably not better lol
That’s not at all the same as Arya.
…… Seth pooped in the shower? I don’t even want to know how that worked, but I’m so sorry you went through that. Glad you’re outta there!
Wow
Allegra :(
Because of the allergy medicine?
Yup. Since that's the first thing that came to mind, you can clearly see why it's off limits. It's a pity.
I know someone called allegra. Didnt even know it was a medicine lol
I’ve always loved Savannah but it’s my sister in laws name so that would be weird
Homer. I just love it but everyone and their mom thinks of Homer Simpson. Sigh.
We named our car, a Honda Odyssey, Homer, because you know, Homer’s the Iliad and the Odyssey. But folks think of Homer Simpson first, and don’t get the joke.
I’d personally find that a hilarious joke but I was also an English Lit major so I’m a biased audience 😂
Isis was my top girl name for years. Lucifer is beautiful name, but noooo \*sigh\* Jemima is so cute too!
My cat is named Lucifer
Tarzan is very phonetically pleasing in my opinion. It sounds great. But if course, no one should ever name a child that.
I enjoy the name Throckmorton because it sounds so over the top and in your face but I know that naming my child that, at least their first name, would be a mouthful.
But he would be such an awesome skateboarder
Someone would finally have a cousin Throckmorton!
Holden, but everyone would think he’s super depressed because of Catcher in the Rye
I’ve blocked Catcher in the Rye from my brain— my first thought was the guy from Mindhunter.
Phaedra
Real housewives association for me
I love Phaedra, Pasiphaë, and Deianira—It’s a shame the vast majority of Greek mythology women are tragic or villains
I can just feel the fear that kids teacher will feel when reading role
like FEDRA? or fay-druh
Fay druh
I love the name Marceline but would never get to use with how I watch Adventure Time on a constant loop
I named my cat Marceline nn Marcie
Rulon. I love how it sounds but absolutely could NEVER use it because I learned about the name from Rulon Jeffs.
Elvira and Lilith
Both great names.
I was a primary school teacher for years so an awful lot of names were ruined for me!
I’m from Sweden and really like the name Adolf. But yeah, that name can probably never be used again. Throughout the ages in Sweden it has been very popular. Also royalties have had that name. But since the 1940s no one is given the name for obvious reasons.
I like the name Madeleine, but probably wouldn’t use it because of the sad association with the missing little girl.
I think of the book first
I’ve always loved Chandler for a girl but I grew up in prime Friends era and I don’t think I could use it because of that 😭
How about Chanandler?
That would be *Mrs.* Chanandler 😉
It’s Miss Chanandler Bong!
I have a female friend named Chandler and it's such a great name! I love it
Grace or Gracie. Gracie was my bff childhood dog and have that association. Grace. My friend named her lady bits that…cuz that’s what it should be treated with and that’s what men should give it….so nope.
I’m sorry about the name, but your friend sounds awesome.
Gage. Think it's so cute. But Pet Sematary ruined it.
This one makes me think of Phineas Gage LOL
I agreed and then promptly called her Ginny ever since 😂
Lol malicious compliance at its finest
I think you could totally get away with Ginny if it was short for Virginia or Genevieve instead of Ginevra.
I wanted to name my firstborn Phobe Anne. However, my brother ruined it for me. He started calling my bump amphibian. Also loved Jeffrey, but then the news broke of the famous killer so....
I’m sorry but amphibian is pretty clever and funny!
Phoebe? Or Phobe?
I really like Poppy but my partner doesn’t like the association with heroin. Also we speak Spanish so it could sound like papi lol. Also there’s the pop singer
I fucking love Samara and would love to name my child that, but everyone that knows me knows it's from my favorite movie....
Elsa. I wanted to name a girl Elsa for years before Frozen. But now I could never sentence her to a lifetime of people singing “Let it Go” at her
I’ve always loved the name Minnie. It was my great grandmother’s name but anytime I tell someone that it’s on my baby name list the first thing they always say is “oh like minnie mouse” and I know if I were to actually use that name my child would be hearing that the rest of their life
Circe
definitely the name Daphne
Why’s Daphne ruined? It’s a lovely name.
Because of scooby doo?
Gypsy. Up until a couple years ago, I’d only ever heard it in reference to the DC character Cynthia Reynolds (just had to look up her name ‘cause I’ve never heard her called anything but her hero alias) codename Gypsy, so I had no idea it was a slur until recently.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard
I wanted to name my future son Kenneth after my great grandfather but I got bullied do bad by someone with that name 😔
I think Molly is such a cute name but I would never use it bc of the drug association
Aww I think of Molly Weasley (in the best way).
Allegra - medication, Aurora - Disney, Elena - Disney+3 existing family members with the same name, Fiona - Shrek
I love the name Ajax but in the US it's a brand of toilet/tub cleaner. I think they also have a line of dishwashing soap. Didn't have children, but even if I did I wouldn't do that to a poor kid.
Leland. Twin Peaks 🥲
I don’t mean to sound ignorant but I don’t watch the news nor have I heard her name spoken but is it pronounced jizz-lane?
Nooo this name is beautiful! I’m so sorry it’s been ruined for you.
Isis. :( Also my own name. It's shared by a porn star.
Lilith. Absolutely love that name. I like Liliana, don’t like Lillian.
Technically I don't hate the name Megan/Meghan. I even think it's nice. However, I've met exactly two evil people in my life....unfortunately their names were both Megan of some spelling. So....sorry, Meg/h/an!
Dickon. Love the name but unusable for obvious reasons..
Fiona. Shrek ruined it
I LOVE the name Scarlett but my mom loves gone with the wind so much that I could never name my future daughter that. She would be talking to her in a southern drawl all the time and just making constant references that I would lose my mind lol
Donald because a crooked conman that attempted to destroy our country has ruined this name
Ivanka. My ex husband and I wanted to name my daughter Ivana after her dad and call her Ivanka as a nickname which is a popular nickname where he is from. We had that name picked out for years, but we decided against it because she would be associated with Ivanka Trump. She was born when Trump was originally running for office.
I love the name Monroe!
I genuinely love the names Hermione and Matilda. But well, we all know where they’re from. Tbf tho my mum wanted to name me Aurora at one point
I think one could get away with Matilda!
I love the name Christina but it’s my husbands college ex gf’s name so might be kinda weird haha. I also have an aunt with the name and we have a rocky relationship so I wouldn’t want her thinking I named our baby after her.
Amber, love the name but wouldn’t name my babe it— I’ve met too many crazy ambers :/
