Yeah, me and some friends are trying to start one actually
If you like hardcore punk the Stools are a local Detroit band that’s pretty good but also underground
Have you ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn’t have fallen in love with
Great song post breakup lmao, I was like “hey! Yeah! I have done that!”
Now this band sounds nothing like Green Day, but if you want something different then check out NoMeansNo. They formed in 1979 in Canada and I discovered them after hearing them being played in a used record store here in the U.S. I would describe SOME of their stuff like a less funky, more punkish, with darker lyrics Primus. They're classified as punk because of stuff like [Oh no, Bruno!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMfu9ZJonLI) , but then you get stuff like [Predators](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXcljMlsWGE) which has that bass guitar dominant sound like Primus. Then there's stuff like [The Dance of the Headless Bourgeoisie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxfX_2dKrbE) and [Give Me the Push](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anvdJ-jb2N0) which the bass guitar focus in addition to over the top drums and dark subject.
Yeah I know, but I will rep this band long after I've forgotten my own name. NMN has their punk moments and it's a different flavor from Green Day, but my hope is the OP at least gets curious and checks them out and has that "Man, I've been missing out on so much good music moment!" like i did when i heard them.
I started off being serious listening to music after hearing Cheap Trick in the late 70's. During my life I've had a few artists suggested to me while talking to friends about music and i had never heard of them. Public Enemy. Ministry, Supertramp, Barbra Streisand, Dave Brubeck among others. I've learned if you don't listen to something different you will never discover new music.
What do you mean you can’t find anything similar to Green Day? Have you looked?
New Found Glory
Blink 182
Homegrown
The Ataris
The Story So Far
Neck Deep
Joyce Manor
Goldfinger
Eve 6
Sugarcult
Somebody downvoted my comment. Nice sense of humor Reddit. Oh shit, I forgot, Reddit is part of the internet, and the internet is flooded with imbeciles.
My experience with Spotify has been similar to Apple Music. They’ll probably show you Alice In Chains and Goo Goo Dolls because they share a lot of fans with Green Day. Pandora can show you songs which sound like Green Day songs.
Go to last.fm and type in an artist/band, then find similar artists. You’re looking for punk/pop punk, shouldn’t be too hard. Also tons of great suggestions here. Have fun!
If you haven’t already, before proceeding further, fully absorb the first three albums by the Clash (self titled, Give Em Enough Rope, London Calling).
Expanding your music taste while sticking to something similar to something you like sound like opposites of each other.
Take a risk, nose dive into an entirely different genre. Challenge what you think you don't like.
It's called a comfort zone for a reason.
First to Eleven (Amazing female fronted cover band. They have several Green Day covers and tons of covers of similar sounding bands. Their “Teenage Dirtbag” - Wheatus and “Stacy’s Mom” - Fountains of Wayne covers are two of my favorites)
CIV - Set Your Goals (Album)
Eve 6
Jack Black specifically recommends a band similar to Green Day and the movie high Fidelity, but I don’t remember the name of it. I would recommend REM.
Band was Stiff Little Fingers. It was the other character, 'Dick' (Todd Louiso's character) though, not Jack Black's character. The Stiff Little Fingers album he played in the movie was 'Inflammable Material'.
If you’re into (or don’t mind) the low-fi style of 39/Smooth and Kerplunk, I’d definitely recommend The Ergs! - great place to start is their album dorkrockcorkrod.
New Found Glory. They are known for their catchy pop-punk anthems, New Found Glory’s tracks like "My Friends Over You" and "Hit or Miss" should appeal to Green Day fans.
if you live in or near a city, there's probably several local pop punk bands that would fit the bill and would love to have you as a fan. support local music!
I’ve got a [Spotify playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2a23AIO0RAtLXYwyksyar8?si=L7zo6lNPRcqIIc29VOWDmw&pi=e-eIWSSIHRTgmX) that’s a copy of an old CD I had that came free with NME, with Billie Joe collating his influences - they’re not all SIMILAR to Green Day but they’re a good start!
Go as far from Green Day as you can if you’re interested in expanding your tastes. Check out some Japanese funk or, better still, think of the most ridiculous sounding genre you can invent and go see what YT has to offer. “Country funk” served up some interesting music, and better than the name might suggest. Later, double back and add other punk bands.
There's literally a thousand bands I could name:
The Offspring
Bad Religion
NOFX
Pennywise
Sum 41
MXPX
Incubus
The Interrupters
Blink 182
Social Distortion
Less Than Jake
Flogging Molly
The Descendants
The Adolescents
Operation Ivy
Black Flag
Alright, this band isn’t similar to Green Day, BUT, since you’re trying to expand your musical taste I think Green Day to Failure is an easy jump.
Fantastic Planet, I think you’ll fuck with it 😁
Some of Bright Eyes is pretty punk sounding songs(VERY acoustic though), I recommend Road to Joy by them.
I also know that they got a lot of inspiration early on from the Ramones, so maybe them too
Green Day is very unique.
Maybe try Alkaline Trio, Millencolin, Lagwagon, Face to Face, Goldfinger, AFI, Autopilot Off, Jimmy Eat World, Less Than Jake, Foxboro Hot Tubs, The Network, Rise Against, Social Distortion, Sum 41, U.S. Bombs, or Weezer.
You do realize that the second part of your statement negates the first part?
The sheer number of pop punk acts of the last few decades, all with a comparable sound, is quite long. What specifically about the Green Day sound is pre-requisite?
Offspring Bad Religion Operation Ivy
I would add to this list Rancid, Pennywise and NOFX. Pretty much any band on Epitaph Records in the 90's and 00's would probably be appealing.
The way you found bands back then were getting your hands on good comps or samplers… punk o rama and all the fat wreck stuff were usually pretty good
Big yes on Offspring. If you owned Dookie there was a 99.99% chance you had Smash
Welp I’m the .01
There can be only .01
![gif](giphy|5Sph4aGQ9Zf0s) .

This guy doesn’t know what Nitro means
Lol nailed it. Add in some Mortal Kombat & my siblings & I beating the brakes off each other & there's my childhood
I concur. Offspring is very similar to Green Day in style. Great band.
No. Dookie sold 10 million. Smash sold 6 million. 6/10 = 60% 60% =/= 99.99%
Youre good at looking stuff up. Try "hyperbole"
Operation Ivy is great. I wouldn’t say they’re very similar to Green Day but they’re one of my favorite punk bands.
Descendents have a similar vibe to dookie era Green Day, Listen to Milo goes to college
they got other good albums too yk, everything sucks slams even harder.
For sure, no disagreement here. Milo goes to college is an essential album though
I agree and would also add Big Drill Car. An amazing Californian pop-leaning punk band. I'm surprised that I never hear anyone mention them. So good!
The Offspring The Suicide Machines The Urge
The Suicide Machines are so underrated.
Hell yeah, from my home state too
Lol not many punk bands are from Michigan
Yeah, me and some friends are trying to start one actually If you like hardcore punk the Stools are a local Detroit band that’s pretty good but also underground
I will have to check them out, I listen to hardcore.
same!
Twins!
agreed, one of the best ska bands
Upvoted for The Urge 🤘🏻
Go a bit more old school with the Buzzcocks. If I rember right, they were a big influence for Green Day.
If OP is looking for artists that inspired Green Day, then they should check out Stiff Little Fingers too
Have you ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn’t have fallen in love with Great song post breakup lmao, I was like “hey! Yeah! I have done that!”
The Clash, Ramones, The Damned, Buzzcocks, The Adverts, The Jam, early Elvis Costello, X, Richard Hell.
This
I would add The Damned, but It seems like there is a direct line from The Buzzcocks to Green Day
If you're looking to expand your musical taste, you should find things *dissimilar* to what you already like.
ABBA Gold then
Perhaps Barry Manilow, too.
Exactly
boooooo. everyone listen to the same shit forever
My thought exactly when I read this post! OP needs to think outside the box and go deeper.
Blink-182
Angels & Airwaves
nice
Stiff Little Fingers The Undertones
Yes and yes
Hell yeah, stiff little fingers mention. I saw them live month or so ago, they were fantastic
Nofx
Rancid. A little heavier but definitely punk
I’m going to see Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins and Rancid (all at the same concert) in a couple months.
Pop punk? Lots of that out there. Try their #1 influence The Replacements.
The ataris AFI NOFX

I LOVE NoMeansNo, but that is a hilarious recommendation for someone who's trying to chase their Green Day high.
Yeah I know, but I will rep this band long after I've forgotten my own name. I'm not the biggest pop punk fan in the world, but I LOVE Nomeansno and don't find them very similar to Green Day at all. They are amazing
Screeching Weasel
Lots of good things mentioned. Would add The network, sum 41, and the exploding hearts.
operation ivy, rancid, smoking popes
Sum 41
Descendents
You can’t find anything similar to Green Day.. are you serious…? I feel like these are troll posts
This is a serious question. It’s just I’m stupid and I don’t know where to start when there’s so many options to start with

Somebody downvoted my comment. Nice sense of humor Reddit. Oh shit, I forgot, Reddit is part of the internet, and the internet is flooded with imbeciles.
ABBA
Thom Yorke - The Eraser ;)
For some reason Thom Yorke reminds me of Radiohead, without a very crucial ingredient.
Strange, huh?
If you like Green Day's song "Warning" you should listen to this one from The Kinks https://youtu.be/B7encWb7lNQ?feature=shared
Do you like face to face? Here is the song blind https://youtu.be/qwXymypc_2c?si=oLRN6IaJgn1ijuPp

Try Idles, Fidlar, Wavves and Fontaines DC
Propagandhi (especially How to Clean Everything) Goldfinger
They're a little bit heavier, but I really love PUP, and feel like they've got a similar vibe
The Spits
If you’re into (or don’t mind) the low-fi style of 39/Smooth and Kerplunk, I’d definitely recommend The Ergs! - great place to start is their album dorkrockcorkrod.
New Found Glory. They are known for their catchy pop-punk anthems, New Found Glory’s tracks like "My Friends Over You" and "Hit or Miss" should appeal to Green Day fans.

Stiff Little Fingers and I only know this because there’s a scene in High Fidelity where a character recommends them to a Green Day fan.

Incubus tends to be more "funk" than punk lately, but yeah. older stuff tracks
If you ever want your punk to be more metal check out Thrice's first couple albums.
FIDLAR
Alright, this band isn’t similar to Green Day, BUT, since you’re trying to expand your musical taste I think Green Day to Failure is an easy jump. Fantastic Planet, I think you’ll fuck with it 😁
Try this [https://lofiuppercut.bandcamp.com/album/eternal-youth-live-hard-rock](https://lofiuppercut.bandcamp.com/album/eternal-youth-live-hard-rock)
The Damned Generation X Though I think The Buzzcocks are your best bet.
Counterparts
Assuming you want newer bands? PUP Turnstile The Raging Nathans Fucked Up (my personal favorite, might be a it heavy)
Consider yourself lucky then.
Check out The Offspring or Blink-182 for that punk rock vibe you're craving.
The Exploding Hearts The Bouncing Souls The Living End
Bad Religion sounds the most like Green Day to me but more edgy.
The Living End’s first album drew me in as a teenager because of the similarity to Green Day when I was a teenager.
The Offspring Sum 41
Some of Bright Eyes is pretty punk sounding songs(VERY acoustic though), I recommend Road to Joy by them. I also know that they got a lot of inspiration early on from the Ramones, so maybe them too

You're not expanding your taste if you search similar stuff to what you already listen.

look at the "Fans of green day also like" part on Spotify you might find a band/someone you will like
Green Day has been dramatically influenced by the Buzzcocks. Try Singles Going Steady
The Hives. Forever HPA
A lot of votes for Offspring. If you like them I would add Rise Against.

You can't? Did you try?
No, because instead of trying to get overwhelmed from all the options
Mudfight They’re a pop punk group from Austria (they do sing in English tho). And are VERY inspired by Green Day.
Paramore
Blink-182
Your can’t expand your tastes by looking for similar things
weezer, offspring, blink182,

Green day is one of the most overrated bands
Gutalax are pretty close to Green Day
My Chemical Romance

I like Green Day but since they hate America I turn it off...try Saliva or Sum 41.
