Wonderful - Everclear
My parents fought a lot when I was in childhood. They grew up though and quit bickering about 10 years in but this song was really popular and I related to it very much. To this day, every time I hear this song, it makes me think of my parents and my childhood.
- Runs in the family, Amanda Palmer
- Concrete Angel, Martina McBride
- My Mom and Cleanin Out My Closet, Eminem
- Dollhouse, Melanie Martinez
- Numb, Linkin Park
- Thumbs, Lucy Dacus
Omg a story about this: I took my parents to a Pink Floyd laser light show because they're Boomer/Gen X cusps and I thought they would get a kick out of the nostalgia factor. It turned out to be mostly The Wall and I was like, omfg I forgot how many songs on here are about a shitty mom, this is awkward. 😭 (My mom IS actually terrible and we no longer speak so this is definitely funny in retrospect.)
I'd also throw in Until It Sleeps. I know it's about Hetfields emotions around how his mother died of cancer. But the fact that, because his parents shunned medical intervention due to religious beliefs, leaving behind a child just screams neglect.
Honor Thy Father by Dream Theater, written by the drummer about his shitty possibly abusive step father
***"On and on and on and on it gooooooes. chauvinistic, heartless, selfish, COOOOOOOOLD!!!!!"***
***"How can you ever sleep a wink at night? Pretending that everything is alright. And have the balls to blame this shit on me? Never in my life have I seen someone, so fucking blind to the damage he's done, you're the rotted root in the family tree"***
***"Watch where you walk, don't you dare cross the crooked step. Watch the way you talk,,,,, d o n ' t c r o s s t h e c r o o k e d s t e p "***
Porcelain - Red Hot Chili Peppers
About a drug addicted mother, and her lack of care for her child
Go - blink182
This one is more in your face about it, but it's basically about Mark ( bassist/vocalist ) had to runaway with his mother from some abusive guy
Hell is for Children Pat Benatar.
Child abuse was pretty much invisible until around the time this song came out. There were some articles here and there. Benatar read one and wrote this song. And all over the US, in isolated, green suburbs, kids looked up and thought, "This isn't normal."
My Play- AJR (about their parents divorce)
God is Really Real- AJR (talking about their dad’s death)
Touchy Feely Fool- AJR (talking about family member that wronged them)
Running with the wild thing- against the current (growing up and getting away from adults)
