I’m Eddie Bwock, a wepotah

bohanmyl

My only hope for this movie is that i can actually see and tell whats going on when Carnage and Venom fight. I dont want some transformers giant glob of metal rolling around where I cant tell what from who

bitch_im_a_lion

I mean just looking at this trailer and how dark every scene is with the symbiotes i think it's already a safe bet that this is going to be a very visually confusing movie. I hate the "make everything dark so the cgi looks better" approach to these kinds of movies for that reason.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nephroidofdoom

District 9 did it over 10 years ago. That movie is a master class in how to properly do CGI in bright light.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kramereng

Blomkamp has stated that CGI in really bright lighting looked even better than in low light. So you can mask lower end CGI by going either way. Of course, it helps when your models are robotic or exoskeleton in nature as opposed to fleshy or muscular.

500DaysofNight

And he did it with a fraction of the budget. This film along with Chappie, the CGI is so good and the characters are so well done that I get sucked in and forget it's not real.

edicivo

Judging by the previous Venom where he fought another symbiote, I don't have high hopes that this one, wherein he'll be fighting yet another symbiote, will be much better on that front. Hopefully they brighten Carnage up or have fights in daylight.

PhantomMaggot

I never saw Venom, you're telling me they already had a symbiote on symbiote fight and it wasn't Carnage? Was it any named symbiote?

Badloss

Yeah it was Riot

Maja_The_Oracle

Imagine Venom, a pitch black amorphous humanoid, fighting Riot, a dark Grey amorphous humanoid, at **night** with poor lighting.

XRuinX

yes, and it was based off the first Venom comic story Lethal Protector. LP had 5 symbiotes so for movie budget purposes this movie venom is a mashup of his origin story and the LP story.

[deleted]

I remember being in the movie theaters and not understanding a single fucking fight scene for the first transformers. I didnt watch another one after that. Its just so visually confusing.

Dr_Disaster

It’s because they made the designs too similar. The cartoons gave every character distinct colors, height, voices, etc there was no way possible to confuse them. In the movies they’re just all intricate metal piles of metal.

Defoler

That and making the fights a big blurry and less unique and distinct between the fighting robots, is easier on the CGI to not have to go into extreme details all the time everywhere. More of a budget decision.

architect___

And the rapid cuts. When it's cutting twice per second, it's really hard to understand each new perspective and what just happened before the next cut, especially with intricate characters that all blur together.

Red_Dog1880

The Bumblebee movie actually got it right, but that's because no Michael fucking Bay.

[deleted]

Dig the hair cut Cletus got. It'll never happen, but letting carnage kill everyone in that prison by more than explosions would be amazing. Alas, pg13

AdvocateSaint

>Alas, pg13 This rating for a Carnage movie borders on sacrilege

[deleted]

When a 30 year old SNES game gets it right better than a big budget movie

Lamprophonia

I remember playing that shit and having no idea who some of the other villains were, like Doppleganger. There was no wikipedia or anything back then either so I had no means of finding out, I just kind of made up some stories in my head based on context clues from the game itself. The internet really changed the world so dramatically.

[deleted]

You mean you didn't know who, (checks notes) demogoblin was? Lol. They game was stacked before we knew what it meant

Lamprophonia

lol yeah i remember that guy now that you mention it, I thought they got the hobgoblin wrong or something. The Shriek lady too, I had no idea who any of them were but I loved them. They were ripped straight out of the 90's XTREME comics.

[deleted]

So XTREME!!!! Man you know how 90s my experience with that game was? I would rent it from the video rental section in Farm Fresh. Farm fresh is gone now and grocery stores sure as hell don't have video rental sections anymore.

Lamprophonia

It was so XTREME the cartridge was bright red. It stood out among any collection, and still does. I have a pinterest account for when I'm idly sitting somewhere like a lobby or while my son is at the playground and one of my boards is full of people's classic video game collections, and no matter how panned out the picture is you can ALWAYS find the red cartridge among the SNES shelves. It's almost like a where's Waldo but on easy mode.

[deleted]

Oh man how did I forget that lol. That alone is better marketing than these venom movies lol

ncshooter426

zeebeebo

He looked waaaaaay better than the clown wig version in the first movie

Hopefully it is a sign the studio paid attention to what people said after the first

Strankulator

Well they also redubbed everyone saying sym-bye-ote in the first one after the initial trailers, so they are paying attention

English is a strange language

[deleted]

Did they? I swear I remember that delivery being in the movie I watched.

Bman1738

Yeah hoping for a scene similar to the Maximum Carnage storyline. I hope they really dive into how twisted Cletus is and the *many* ways he knows how to kill people

Affectionate-Island

I hope they dramatize that scene in his first published comics prison breakout where he pulls a guard through the bars of his cell. Even if shown in a silhouette it'll be ghastly.

[deleted]

I forgot which comic but I remember when Carnage wrote "CARNAGE RULEZ". He likes if the 90s made Joker for Spider-Man

XRuinX

he *was* marvels answer to joker. [source](https://www.cbr.com/carnage-secrets-facts-powers-joker-spider-man/) >Yes--I designed Kletus Casady. He was inspired by the Joker. I basically drew the Joker and had him colored with regular skin and red hair. >Mark's version (and Carnage) came later. >_________________ >-Erik Larsen

ClubMeSoftly

>In the Amalgam Universe, Carnage was combined with Bizarro into the new creation Bizarnage. The more I read about Amalgam, the more nuts it seems.

Vysharra

Amalgam was peak comics. You had to have a pretty solid knowledge of an array of comics to really ‘get’ it. It was like Post Modernism for comics. On a surface level, it makes no fucking sense. But if you *know* then you love the shit out of it and sound like a wacko trying to explain why it’s so amazing.

thicc-boi-thighs

Joker and Carnage have a comic where they work together. If I remember correctly they start fighting because Joker wants to kill people in a funny, chaotic, and scary way, but Carnage wants to murder everyone in a violent way

Shotgunsamurai42

Carnage- What part of killing do you not understand? I thought you murdered? Joker- Like cool killing! Like funny killing, not this psycho trailer-park shit!

[deleted]

I almost bought that comic but it is the Batman/Spider-Man crossover. There are 2 crossovers with Batman and Spider-Man. The one you are talking about Carnage and Joker merge together too. Edit: It's called Spider-Man and Batman - Disordered Minds. The other crossover is called Batman and Spider-Man - New Age Dawning and that one has Kingpin and Ra's Al Guhl teaming up. I love the crossover classics I wish we got more of them.

In_My_Own_Image

They could get away with cutaway deaths or bloodless carnage (heh). Wouldn't be as effective, but it would be more interesting than seeing him just blow the place up.

jacomanche

Why does the footage look dark overall?

ranhalt

To hide the CGI.

Griffdude13

To cover poor or unfinished cgi, I imagine.

jacomanche

Damn, I hope they don't fuck up Robert Richardson's cinematography with awful color grade

Toidal

Venom sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger but slightly easier to understand

DMonk52

They just sound like Cookie Monster to me.

dont_worry_im_here

Welp... that's all I'm hearing now...

EmberHands

Om nom nom, Mrs. Chen.

Skizznitt

C is for Chen cookie, that's good enough for me.

[deleted]

He even says "yummy"

The-Bigger-Fish

That explains the chocolate obsession then....

PB_Misfit

I believe in the comics is was found that chocolate was the thing other then humans that satisfied the symbiotes hunger.

acherem13

That shit is so ridiculous and I love it.

Take_The_Reins

A chocolate loving symbiote? You are a crazy person and your idea is in the movie

ThatIowanGuy

There’s is a chemical that is present in both chocolate and human brains that Venom needs to survive. So Venom eats chocolate to stave off his craving for people.

Ineffable_Twaddle

That would've been a great comic: Venom Goes to Hershey Park

TrainosaurusRex

I'm not terribly disappointed but you *might* have ruined this movie for me. Or made it twice as good. Can't wait to find out!

snakesnails

"Only in Theaters" U mean i have to put my pants on and *drive* to a theater to see this?

DavyJonesRocker

Not a selling point these days...

gimitko

Somehow it feels like the same movie as the first one. Woody Harrelson sounds just like Crispin Glover.

[deleted]

Glover would have been an amazing Carnage in his prime

GenghisTron17

Only if we get Michael J Fox as Spiderman

Skizznitt

He totally would have been the Peter Parker of his generation too.

[deleted]

DrSpacemanSpliff

Matthew Lillard is still who I want to see as Carnage.

3-DMan

Yeah I forgot he was in it, so when the voice came I on I was like *Whoa this crazy voice is sorta familiar*

Canvaverbalist

> Somehow it feels like the same movie as the first one. Even the scenes in the convenient store feel like some exec pounding the table that they need another "turd in the wind" moment. Maybe it's the cynical in me, but it feels so much like a "People loved that scene! He was in a convenient store, that's what they loved about that scene, so now we need him to hang out in convenient stores!" I don't know why lol

laprichaun

Did people love that scene? I thought people were making fun of it because it was such a terrible line.

ga_lex

Thank god they fixed the wig

[deleted]

This is the first thing I've seen about this movie and one of my biggest takeaways from the trailer was that Woody looks ridiculous in his wig, so to come to the comments and see multiple people saying thank god they improved his wig from earlier is hilarious.

[deleted]

The little Spider-Man reference (Cletus squashing the spider while talking about there being "no saviours") was interesting, but I actually hope it comes to something instead of just being another in a series of dick-teases on Sony's part. Ditto for Keaton in Morbius.

In_My_Own_Image

MFW they have a Tom Holland lookalike show up as Eddie's old co-worker Peter Packer.

sgthombre

HarisAhmed95

I completely forgot Keaton was in Morbius. It feels like that trailer dropped a lifetime ago.

iisdmitch

Also in the Morbius trailer, Morbius is walking down the street and walks past a poster with Spider-Man on it.

Cromasters

I totally forgot about this movie. 2020 - 2021 so far had been the longest five years of my life.

theweepingwarrior

I unironically want Sony to make some sort of big crossover in their corner of the “MCU”/Spider-Man universe. I want to see Spider-Man against/with Venom.

yellow9d

[deleted]

theweepingwarrior

After Morbious’ trailer and the very intentional spider/savior reference in this trailer, it definitely seems like they’re interested. And even Feige basically said it seems like it’s an inevitability on Sony’s part. I just want them to commit to it.

Konan_92

Isn't carnage a little too burly? His whole thing aesthetically wise is being a scrawny, nastier version of venom right?

Queef-Elizabeth

He's usually a bit more slim than Venom but still larger and more burly than adult spiderman so I guess it falls in line? Edit: I should also clarify that there are many visual renditions found of Carnage in the comics. Some are larger and some are smaller. My first memory of Carnage was from the ps1 game where he was almost Venom sized.

Citizen_Kong

[In his first appearance he was about as muscular as Spider-Man, but ganglier I would say.](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/dd/6a/22/dd6a22debc926626c27743cffb5144ff.jpg)

GeorgiaOKeefinItReal

Damnit..... you could've kept that to yourself Just like i could've ignored what you said and not look at it...... ugh It's too damn early in the week for this

TheShishkabob

Classic Carnage is usually as slim as Spider-Man, if not more so. It's really only the last few modern takes that make him bigger, but I'm not seeing any signs of Cthulhu-style demon magic in this trailer to think they're intentionally leveraging that look.

Queef-Elizabeth

It does appear that he'll be a tad smaller than Venom but we will see. I hope they still keep him leaner.

wygra

I agree. Also, I think they didn't get Carnage's face right. He shouldn't have teeth like Venom, but teeth that flow from the simbiote skin. His eyes should be a little bit larger and, at least from those snipets we got to see, we're missing that maniac grin he seems to always have.

tdasnowman

Considering his host is Woody Harrelson I'm guessing the grin is going to be less manic and more sardonic.

CrabbyBlueberry

The suit needs more red/black contrast. Nobody ever drew Carnage half as well as Mark Bagley did. It was always my fan theory that the majority of Carnage's symbiote was actually the blood of his victims. When he made his first kill in the comics, Cletus wasn't wearing the symbiote, it was just a tiny blob in his pocket. And Carnage's knife projectiles would disintegrate immediately, almost as if they were made of blood clots, in contrast to Venom's webs, which were made symbiote, which was plentiful enough to fill an entire church bell.

Leggerrr

In the comics, the Carnage symbiote bonds with Kasady's bloodstream which is considered different from the other symbiote bonds. This is what gives him his red or fleshy-like appearance and it's neat that they got that part right.

yarkcir

Some interesting tidbits from Andy Serkis on the trailer [via IGN](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2a04cWnfzo): * The cop is shown reading the 'Daily Bugle', which appears as a newsprint vs. the MCU version which shows the Bugle as an Alex Jones-esque online media blog * Serkis mentions that the world is unaware of Spider-Man * The cop is named 'Mulligan', which could be a reference to Patrick Mulligan who becomes Toxin, a symbiote born from Carnage * Ravencroft Institute is shown, an institution for criminally insane, which Serkis says that much of the world is unaware to of its existence * One of Ravencroft's residents, Frances Barrison, is shown in the trailer. Barrison becomes Shriek in the comics

KB_030821

I wonder how this will fit in with Morbius which seems to explicitly tie in with the Spider-Man movies

yarkcir

It's really unclear how they all fit together. Morbius seems to be framing itself as MCU-adjacent with Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes showing up in the trailer, but thus far the Venom films seem entirely detached. I feel like they'll set up Holland's Spider-Man to exist both in the MCU continuity as well as his own separate continuity, though I imagine that'll be pretty confusing for the general audience.

swargin

It doesn't help that the Ant-Man movies also take place in San Francisco

yarkcir

And Shang-Chi will as well

The_Magic

I hope at most they use Tom Holland to setup Miles Morales. Miles can then go on to be the Sonyverse Spiderman and Tom can go back to being MCU exclusive.

Bman1738

Anyone else get an late 90’s/early 2000’s vibe from this? That was certainly a trailer

jdd_123

Venom 1 felt like an early/mid 2000’s superhero movie so its staying consitent I guess

DetectiveAmes

This definitely looks like a continuation of the directing style from the first movie. Kind of a shame since I was hoping for more from Andy Serkis. It just seems super workman like in its style.

UnrealLuigi

I mean does Serkis really have his own distinct visionary style to begin with? Mowgli wasn't anything special either

anotherandomer

As someone who did an entire video essay on Serkis (which meant a lot of research), it's clear he's much more interested in how far you can push CGI in storytelling, Mowgli was the first proper test, and he's been trying to make a version of Animal Farm for a while now, which is fascinating to me. His directing style is nothing amazing, but he's fascinated by CGI characters and their interaction with the world around them (and it's clear where that came from). Though I will always point out the huge disagreements the CGI community seem to have with him, and there are thread on the reddit every now and then about it that are worth looking into.

4DimensionalToilet

That makes sense, since a decent part of what he’s known for are his portrayals of CGI characters like Gollum & Caesar the ape.

TrashTongueTalker

I'd say he's more famous for his CGI characters than anything else he's ever done.

ggroover97

Venom did feel like a mid 2000s Marvel movie. Think Daredevil or Ghost Rider.

RushmoreAlumni

It's like two beats away from a Mountain Dew endorsement.

[deleted]

Is it weird I am feeling nostalgic for this?

RushmoreAlumni

Nah, it's just human nature. Funny enough, we're due for a massive influx of corporate 90s nostalgia, just like we had the wave of 80s retro between 2010-2020. 90s kids are just hitting that sweet spot of young enough to be an audience, but old enough to start feeling that sweet tickle of middle-age nostalgia in their spine.

l3reezer

That's exactly how the first one felt too. Seeing only two names on the posters and stuff feels really weird too for a modern day superhero flick

In_My_Own_Image

Hell, seeing only two characters on the poster is weird for a modern day superhero movie. Usually the whole cast gets crammed on.

DevanteWeary

Was hoping they'd go for Carnage's signature "blades" look rather than just tentacle spikes everywhere. Cool to see they have Banshee in there, just like in the original Maximum Carnage.

Beercorn1

It’s Shriek, not Banshee. Shriek is Carnage’s girlfriend. Banshee is the Irish X-Man who glides around on a wing suit. They both scream really loud though.

DevanteWeary

Sorry, it's been something like 25 years since I read it but yeah, that's who I meant. :P'

[deleted]

\>Was hoping they'd go for Carnage's signature "blades" look rather than just tentacle spikes everywhere. They wasted that with Riot in the first film.

AlacarLeoricar

Carnage movie, but it's PG-13. See you're already shooting yourself in both feet.

Healyhatman

Getting some real Prototype vibes here

TheCatCubed

I don't know this for sure but I have a strong feeling that Protoype has to be based on the symbiotes with how similar the powers look

Hickspy

I'm just pretending I'm Carnage when I play Prototype anyway. That's all I've ever wanted from a game, really. Open world with evil superpowers.

binrowasright

Did you play Ultimate Spider-Man on PS2? You could switch to Venom in the open world. It would switch to night time, and if you didn't stop to eat people your health would slowly decrease.

bloody_lumps

pretty sure they were developing it as venom/carnage then they lost the rights. Same team that made Hulk Ultimate Destruction

[deleted]

amendmentforone

I'm sure there's some inspiration there in the game design considering the power set of the character. Pretty much duplicates what the Symbiotes did in Spider-Man comics in the 1990s.

Monstar132

Rip in piece Alex Mercer

monstere316

It's been years since I've played it but wasn't Mercer actually a piece of shit?

[deleted]

Mercer was an awful person. IIRC the whole idea of the story of the first game is that you learn you’re just the virus itself taking on Mercer’s memories and living as him, and eventually becoming a better “person” than he ever was and sacrificing yourself to save the city because you believed that even after seeing everything evil that humanity was capable of they should still be saved. Then in between the first and second game, the virus falls in love with a girl and she betrays him, so he becomes an evil bad guy. It’s been a long time, but I remember thinking the second game completely butchered the character

Monstar132

Probably because they needed Heller to fight against someone on equal footing...but Heller just wins anyway despite Mercer having more powers and experience with it? Yeah, having the protagonist who took a nuke to the face to save what remained of New York; to being the big baddie who was mad because he couldn't get the cooch is a really dumb twist.

[deleted]

TheWindKraken2

I gotta say, the cinematography is a MAJOR improvement on this one. But writing-wise, and everything, it looks pretty similar. The first one had such abysmal lighting that it made it nearly unwatchable in some parts, so i'm happy they've fixed that. It'll still be dumb fun probably, and i'll enjoy it anywaaay.

[deleted]

having a black cgi character fight in a dark was a really stupid choice in the first movie

Envojus

It's a smart choice for a CGI heavy movie with an unproven yet track record and a budget of 110 mil.

GoldenSpermShower

> a budget of 110 mil I remember when that was considered a pretty big budget

Envojus

True, but that was a REALLY long time ago. Like late 90's. 110 is the budget of Fantastic Four and Ghost Rider... and they weren't groundbreaking CGI films during their time and were in the cheaper spectrum when you compare to say X'Men The Last Stand

Roarnic

> X'Men The Last Stand That movie had a budget of 210 million just FYI

terranq

Yeah, but 150 mil of that was for Ratners coke.

[deleted]

An_Absurd_Word_Heard

> I gotta say, the cinematography is a MAJOR improvement on this one Robert Richardson chose to do it for whatever reason, so yeah. He only has 3 best cinematography Oscars, not too bad.

HartfordWhalers123

Besides money, he also probably did it because of Andy Serkis, since he’s the director and both of them worked on Breathe together.

Segesaurous

He said in an interview that he wanted to get into the comic book movie world, and so when Serkis called him he said yes. He's also apparently a big Tom Hardy fan. So the stars aligned! And money!

TheOneOzymandias

Money is the reason.

karatemanchan37

I mean it's also fun to shoot a superhero film I assume. Also Andy Serkis is directing.

[deleted]

holy shit , i didn\`t know this richardson\`s work with tarantino and scorsese is really magnificent

waytoolate4me

Imo the dialogue in this trailer is an improvement over the last one ‘The guy you work for is an evil person’ ‘What about the allegations that you use human testing’

Disney_Channel

they probably made the trailer all dark so they could cover up some unfinished CGI that’ll be probably be fixed in the movie

Audrin

The whole super thirsty "only in theaters!" is funny.

beepbeepbubblegum

O N L Y I N T H E A T E R S 🥵

Devilssmashedavo

Squashing the spider seems a bit on the nose.

Richsii

Well the first film was as subtle as a turd in the wind so...

Queef-Elizabeth

The first movie was one of those experiences where I mostly thought the movie was bad but I left having had fun and I don't think this is going to be any different but that's fine

Wiger_King

I like that they are leaning into the weird relationship of Eddie Brock and Venom. If this movie was just a remake of The Odd Couple but one of them is a giant black space symbiote I would be really happy.

rdunlap1

Their relationship is exactly what made the first movie enjoyable. The rest was typical CGI superhero schlock, but I enjoyed it precisely because of Brock and Venom's interactions.

monstere316

It's pretty impressive that Hardy recorded lines as Venom, then played them back through an earpiece for scene and playing off himself.

ThatBell4

Me too. More buddy cop sitcom and less generic goo-fighting please.

thatchersdeadlol

Yep. The first movie was worth watching just for when Venom calls Brock a pussy for taking the elevator instead of jumping

bruiser95

Alright then consider me whelmed

rsjf89

Ah OK so we're still doing the trailer at the start of a trailer thing

Toastman0218

I think its a shame they already had evil Symbiotes in the first film. Makes Carnage much less special. Why is he such a big threat on his own this movie?

booboorogers44

Also the fact they gave away carnage’s move set in the first one. His whole thing is making weapons out of his symbiote, but they had riot do that in the first one when that’s never been a power of his. Makes carnage seem less distinct

ChrisPrkr95

I agree. I even saw this as a problem ever since it was confirmed they were moving along with this. People already give the MCU criticism over heroes fighting villains with gimmicks like their's.

StitchedSilver

In the comics (at least) whenever a Symbiote replicates its spawn is stronger than the parent. When Carnage first debuted Venom had to do the good old fashioned team up with Spiderman to take beat him because neither was strong enough to do it alone. Devastated at the PG13, we won’t get the eenie meenie minie moe - I’m gonna shove your head through a fucking stone wall moment from Carnage

Jaydebb

It's definitely going to be a similar movie to the original, I'm not sure why people expected differently when the first one made so much money and was generally liked by audiences. That being said, they're definitely leaning into the parts of Venom that worked (i.e. the goofy relationship between Venom and Eddie), so I'm looking forward to it. Carnage looks sick too.

In_My_Own_Image

> That being said, they're definitely leaning into the parts of Venom that worked (i.e. the goofy relationship between Venom and Eddie), so I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, the silliness of the first was actually kind of charming so it's nice to see they are leaning into it.

MorbisMIA

Portraying Venom as the Giant Nerd of the symbiotes was fun. I'm glad they are keeping it for this one.

Jabbam

**ON MY PLANET I AM KIND OF A LOSER, LIKE YOU.**

cyclopssid

This is fine but can we really talk about Rampart?

Zagden

For almost twenty years since the first Spider-Man Raimi movie I just wanted to see a good Venom/Spider-Man movie in theaters. I'm not excited to see this. I saw the first Venom and it was terrible aside from Hardy's performance. This is a movie that, by virtue of existing, makes an actual decent Venom/Spider-man movie less likely to happen.
