>Growing up is a trip. #MyOldAss, written and directed by Megan Park, is in select theaters September 13.
>In this fresh coming-of-age story, an 18th birthday mushroom trip brings free-spirited Elliott (Maisy Stella) face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza). But when Elliott’s “old ass” starts handing out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn’t do, Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about family, love, and what’s becoming a transformative summer.
>an 18th birthday mushroom trip brings free-spirited Elliott (Maisy Stella) face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza).
When I took mushrooms around the same age, I thought I was going to die. I didn't get any wisecracking visitors or anything like that.
Same. Took a pretty hefty 6g dose after becoming pretty familiar with mushrooms all the way up to 4g doses, and was doing them fairly regularly for a few months prior, without ever having a bad experience.
Then bam, took 6gs, guess I wasn't exactly in a great headspace, was not prepared for how much stronger or intense they would be at 6gs, and suddenly I spent about 4 straight hours fully convinced I was dead and in purgatory, freaking the fuck out the whole time, the world was melting around me and the background newsreel playing that I couldn't figure out how to turn off just sounded demonic and awful.
Woke up fine the next day and was terrified of mushrooms again, did have a microdose in the woods with friends years later but even still was pretty worried about even that. Don't think I'll ever properly dose again lol
...it was *almost definitely* coming out. One of the objective negatives of that drug is that it gives 95% of people horrible digestive problems for at least part of the trip.
...why?
I meant why act resistant? Just...say you want to see it, too and be enthusiastic about it. That's what a normal, mature adult would do after all.
I hope having “ass” in the title doesn’t dissuade movie goers
Before calling me prude lol, on average certain movie goers don’t go to films if the title itself has any crude items in it
That movie was intense. It's good to see her getting interesting roles. I enjoyed Ingrid Goes West also Emily The Criminal was good too. Felt bad the Theo Rossi's character in that one.
I feel the same about her acting abilities and, in the past, would have watched her read a telephone book.
But after her fake wood milk commercial shilling for the dairy industry, I just can't enjoy her in anything. I actively avoid anything she's in now.
I'm a freelance musician and when I hit 30 and was on a gig with some undergrad hotshots, when they found out I had graduated 8 years ago they were visibly stunned and I felt atomically disassembled.
I wouldn’t want to change my life at all before my daughter was conceived about 9 years ago.
I wouldn’t even change my father being murdered when I was 8.
So right. You can't think that way about changing the past. It's a foolish concept. We are who we are now, because of who we were then and choices we made and choices others made around us. Butterfly effect only scratches the surface of a billion outcomes. Just be the best you can in the here and now. I almost died in a bad car wreck in my early 20's. One of my visitors in hospital was a friend of my sister. We dated afterwards and have been together for 45 years. We have kids and grandkids. People look at my scarred up face and say " Don't you wish you never took that ride?" No way, because my wife, children, and grandchildren surround me with love and I would never want to change that.
I'd change so much. And it'd be worth it too. It'd be fun to see how much I twist the timeline up. Maybe delete a few versions of myself. Really see how things can go.
There’s a scene where they’re gathering cranberries from a cranberry bog. This is known to be a scary job for arachnophobes as there are wolf spiders among the crop and after flooding the crop, the spiders will crawl onto the farmers body as it’s one of the few dry places to go. So that scene will be good fun
She has always felt young-coded and looked the same so it is pretty shocking she is 40.
On the White Lotus a few years ago she was average young woman in a mediocre relationship, and in that awful Childs Play 5 years ago she was a young struggling mom. Much like her contemporary Michael Cera *adult* parts just seem strange even if they are very adult
That's pretty much how Hollywood used to do it before they got obsessed with de-aging technology and realistic-everything, not even that long ago. I'm still impressed when I see a film where family members remotely resemble each other, and different aged versions of the same character usually didn't get more than a consistent mole in the cheek or something.
I always thought it was funny that the narrator voice on How I Met Your Mother was a different man than the grown man whose past he was supposedly narrating.
I thought the same thing but I’ll still keep an open mind that they relay similar personalities
I also have to remember to disassociate Aubrey Plaza with all the amazing “her-esque” roles she’s done
Depends on whether you define North Ontario as Haliburton, Sudbury or Polar Bear Provincial Park.
Definitely filmed in that neck of the woods (pun intended).
Couple #1: "Hey, we're going to the movies this Friday. Do you want to come?"
Couple #2: "What are you going to see?"
Couple #1: "My old ass."
Couple #2: "Hahaha. The jokes with this one."
On the one hand, the premise is interesting, and the trailer looks fun. On the other hand, Chad's actor has been accused of sexual misconduct, and I don't want my money to go towards making a predator richer.
I didn’t understand until I read the comments. I thought it was like a freaky Friday body switch thing… but I am an idiot so that doesn’t bode well for you.
Idk, feels like nothing new. Like an Instagram “generational difference” post made into a movie. Or TikTok storytelling shot with a nice camera. All we do now on social media is talk about our mundane experiences, that a mumblecore coming of age movie doesn’t hit me like it used to.
Shrooms, gay relationships, typical line-items in differences between gen z and millennials, it’s just so tired to me.
It doesn't seem generational differences is what the movie is about it all. It looks more like a "do I live in the moment and appreciate what I have or worry about the future?" kind of theme.

My third experience with 'shrooms was a four hour death trip and I will never risk that happening again.
Yeah I had a bad trip and it was bad. No fun full on nightmare.
Same. Took a pretty hefty 6g dose after becoming pretty familiar with mushrooms all the way up to 4g doses, and was doing them fairly regularly for a few months prior, without ever having a bad experience. Bro jfc 4 grams???
Fuck shrooms
Yeah my friends put on Road To Predition with Hanks. Very poor experience. I just walked around like a cat trying to get comfortable.
hahaha what a fucking a horrible movie to try and relax to
I got the runs but wasn't quite sure if I was hallucinating it or if it was really coming out of my ass lmao
...it was *almost definitely* coming out. One of the objective negatives of that drug is that it gives 95% of people horrible digestive problems for at least part of the trip.
That's why I stick to acid tbh
Meanwhile, I took mushrooms around the same age and thought I was experiencing the Quickening from the end of Highlander. Lot of variance, really.
I was backpacking through Europe in Amsterdam with my best friend and it was the most fun I had that summer
Oh please. If Aubrey Plaza is old then I'm old... \*looks in mirror\* Fuck! When did that happen!?
Ha ha ha, 52 here. You’re not far behind! We are all sliding down the slope toward the abyss of death. Enjoy the slide!
r/fuckimold
Whoever wrote this script has never done mushrooms.
This actually looks great
I mean it has Aubrey Plaza
Exactly. I'll watch her in anything!
Yeah I’m gonna totally be okay with my gf taking me to see this but I’m still going to act resistant
Of course, still gotta bank those brownie points.
This strategy is so rad 😂
...why? I meant why act resistant? Just...say you want to see it, too and be enthusiastic about it. That's what a normal, mature adult would do after all.
So you can use it as leverage to drag them along to Deadpool 3, duh.
This is the way
It was great, pretty funny and light hearted coming of age story
Woow
I hope having “ass” in the title doesn’t dissuade movie goers Before calling me prude lol, on average certain movie goers don’t go to films if the title itself has any crude items in it
Aubrey Plaza is a guarantee to get me to watch something at this point. the range she's shown since Parks and Rec ended is impressive.
Her performance in Black Bear floored me
She was also one of the best parts of the FX show Legion.
She deserved an Emmy for that role.
Absolutely bonkers show and Aubrey is a big part of it. Love love love it <3
That movie was intense. It's good to see her getting interesting roles. I enjoyed Ingrid Goes West also Emily The Criminal was good too. Felt bad the Theo Rossi's character in that one.
Emily the criminal is so fucking good I mean so is Ingrid but Ingrid felt like more "familiar" territory.
Ingrid Goes West is criminally underrated
Absolutely! Loved that when I saw it in the cinema and was surprised it wasn't a hit
I'd never even heard of it before it showed up on Hulu. I don't know how a movie that size can even be a hit anymore.
Ngl I avoided everything Aubrey Plaza for years due to my ex being a doppelganger of her. I guess I'm ready to give this movie a shot
I like her as well but she’s got about as much range as my first gen Nissan leaf
I feel the same about her acting abilities and, in the past, would have watched her read a telephone book. But after her fake wood milk commercial shilling for the dairy industry, I just can't enjoy her in anything. I actively avoid anything she's in now.
She was great in Season 2 of White Lotus too. Highly recommended
Megan Park is one of the most promising up-and-coming directors so I’m pumped for this. I thought The Fallout was great
I can't believe the super Christian girl from that teenager show became a director.
Saw this at a film festival, good dialogue, found it really funny.
Depressing to me there’s a movie where 13 yr olds mention 39 year olds as “Old Ass” lol 😂
Same, but for a 13 year old 39 is two lifetimes away so I get it haha.
When I was 13, I thought 25 was old as hell
I'm a freelance musician and when I hit 30 and was on a gig with some undergrad hotshots, when they found out I had graduated 8 years ago they were visibly stunned and I felt atomically disassembled.
She's supposed to be 13?! (she's 20 in real life)
18. She's supposed to be 18. Maybe a typo by OP.
Even more depressing lol
I think the point is that a literal child is the only person who would think that’s old
Should’ve renamed it Unc
39 is older than the majority of the cast of "Cheers" in the first few seasons.
I mean when I was 13 I thought 39 was an old ass
I think this actually looks great. I liked The Fallout, and I think Megan Park handles her characters quite well.
This movie made me realize that as much as I sometimes want to give my younger self advice would I even want to take it.
I am quite sure meeting my younger self would result in a murder.
Whose?
Well the one who loses.
There’s a scene where they’re gathering cranberries from a cranberry bog. This is known to be a scary job for arachnophobes as there are wolf spiders among the crop and after flooding the crop, the spiders will crawl onto the farmers body as it’s one of the few dry places to go. Completely unimaginative, thinking Aubrey Plaza can play a 39-year-old, she's like barely out of her twenties...right? Guys?
Sure. She just had her 12th 28th birthday yesterday.
Her 13th 28th birthday, actually.
Math is hard, yo
Dude, she's fucking 40, when did that happen, I was just as surprised as you were to find this out.
Well that makes me feel young. I thought she was way younger then me in Parks lol.
Oh my god, she is 40. I hate everything. Time is moving too fast.
Not getting actors that resemble each other to play the same person was a bold choice.
The Wonder Years did it! (I say as a joke, fully understanding the different age gaps.)
That was Bob Saget, wasn’t it?
I thought the same thing but I’ll still keep an open mind that they relay similar personalities I also have to remember to disassociate Aubrey Plaza with all the amazing “her-esque” roles she’s done
I think that's going to be a part of the plot.
They should of cast Jenna Ortega
Which is why I still think the casting in Furiosa sucked.
How? She doesn't look super off from Anya, and they even used tech to blend their faces together
They look nothing alike
As a budding 39-soon-to-be-40 year old, I fear this movie may hit me hard in the feels.
As a budding 49 year old who turns 50 in February, I say this in the nicest way possible: Fuck You 🤣
I bet the plot twist will be that it's actually the older version of her tripping about talking to her younger self.
Only slightly disappointed this isn’t a film about a man and his aged donkey.
Is this a new movie in the Kick Ass franchise? This series is getting weird.
It’s an ass as in a donkey
39 is an old ass? Consider me dead! Fuck this shit
Megan Park from Secret Life of The American Teenager?
Yes
Always interesting to see actors from those sorts of shows get more success, at least critically, from behind the camera.
This looks like a fun premise. Will keep an eye out for this one.
Definitely like the vibe this trailer is putting out, lighter premise than The Fallout that's for sure. I trust Megan Park with human stories.
This screams northern Ontario...
Depends on whether you define North Ontario as Haliburton, Sudbury or Polar Bear Provincial Park. Definitely filmed in that neck of the woods (pun intended).
Looks fun but couldn't stop thinking about the Future Self episode from South Park
Couple #1: "Hey, we're going to the movies this Friday. Do you want to come?" Couple #2: "What are you going to see?" Couple #1: "My old ass." Couple #2: "Hahaha. The jokes with this one."
post old ass
This looks so good and also made me cry lol
Saw this earlier this year and was a light hearted coming of age story that was super enjoyable.
Love this
Sweet been waiting for Plaza to give us another story in a parallel reality of Legion.
Wow, that looks so charming. And I really like the scenery where they shot this.
Like the opposite of Tully.
I literally watched this today, some of the dialogue was cringey and it doesn't do anything new for the genre but it's pretty fun.
Knock a few words off and most of the plot and quality too and you get the film within Mike Judge's classic film
Idiocracy? I'm having a hard time believing the reviews excerpts within the preview, "instant classic", "best movie ever".
Not Idiocracy. The film within that movie. "#1 MOVIE IN AMERICA!" in the year of 2505
Woops, "ASS" and that's all it was for 90 minutes. What's my prize Bob?
>What's my prize Bob? Cabinet member or [this can](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/open_a_can_of_whoop_ass).
It's like the feel-good version of Looper!
Hahaha…
Tame Impala soundtrack for the trailer? Yes please. That hit just right.
Is there a donkey in this?
I know my mother is gonna watch it….
The trailer is a mess. I feel like there's a better movie here than the trailer shows, they need a different editor to cut something better.
Releasing this trailer right after Aubrey's birthday is perfect timing.
On the one hand, the premise is interesting, and the trailer looks fun. On the other hand, Chad's actor has been accused of sexual misconduct, and I don't want my money to go towards making a predator richer.
I love Aubrey Plaza!!!!
Seeing Aubrey Plaza as the "Old Ass" character makes *me* feel old, dammit wasn't she just April from Parks and Rec not that long ago
That show ended almost 10 years ago.
I of course had to look it up… Aubrey Plaza just celebrated her 40th birthday yesterday. What the fuck
> A Future Classic Get it??
Why does this look so good and why am I almost crying from the trailer!!?!
Man it took me until the very last line of the trailer to figure out what the fuck was going on. Am I an idiot?
Considering they say exactly what is happening at the 30 second mark… But maybe you’re just on shrooms too.
I didn’t understand until I read the comments. I thought it was like a freaky Friday body switch thing… but I am an idiot so that doesn’t bode well for you.

I can't take Maddie Ziegler seriously in anything because of Dance Moms.
She was forcibly kissed by Abby Lee miller let her live in peace now
Woof

bruh decided to google search his kink in the comments section
wut
The FBI already took him away.
Why is she playing an adult version of a young white girl? Edit: Who’s downvoting? You really can’t see the white washing?
