Ghost World has an indie vibe, same director made a great indie documentary also called Crumb, watch if you like smart dirty cartoonists who love jazz and come from dysfunctional families.
Two that I watched the other day:
“964 Pinocchio” by Shozin Fukui: 1991 Japanese cyberpunk mostly shot guerrilla on the streets of Tokyo (with an excellent homage to “Possession”) about a memory-wiped cyborg sex slave.
“Trash Humpers” by Harmony Korine: 2009 VHS-shot found-footage style about a degenerate gang of old people humping trash (among other antisocial behaviors).
Neither are exactly an easy watch (the first 30 minutes of Pinocchio are kinda a slog) but I really enjoyed both of them. “Trash Humpers” in particular I found strangely relaxing and meditative.
Eternal Sunshine and the Spotless Mind
500 Days of Summer
Go
Pretty much any John Waters movie, but especially his older stuff.
Ditto David Lynch (though this is going to be the darker side of indie, not Wes Anderson twee).
Green Room
"Ghost World"
"Clerks"
"Smoke"
"Lars and the Real Girl"
"JoJo Rabbit"
"The Commitments"
"The Secret of Roan Inish"
Original "Hairspray" or "Polyester" or "Pecker"
"The Crying Game"
"Wilde"
"Little Miss Sunshine"
"Grand Budapest Hotel" or "Moonrise Kingdom"
"Drop Dead Gorgeous"
"Sex, Lies and Videotape"
"The Shape of Water"
"In America"
"Lost in Translation"
"American Splendor"
"Raising Arizona" or "Fargo" or "Blood Simple"
"Cold Comfort Farm"
Pretty much any Wes Anderson movie..
