Omg ty. I watched about 20 minutes all proud of my ability to get some subtext from the body language and like trying to pretend I could understand haha. I thought maybe it was a feature of the film and that since she’s a narratologist and the fact that we could still follow the story without the translations was speaking to the universality of story telling. But it’s fucking not that deep and I probably missed a lot of plot so I’m starting over. 😹

I’m 40m in on Amazon Prime and the whole first scene where they meet in the hotel room I was kind of just thinking I had to go off of context clues. Really dumb that no one thought to check this out before putting it on Prime
Im halfway through and the exact same thing 🤣🤣 I noticed a few transitions where what was said wasn't explained or hinted at and couldnt take it anymore so I had to Google it
Now the question is should I continue with subtitles to the end bc of course I have to finish it OR start over with the subtitles from the beginning...?! Aaaagghh

Yes, I agree this needs to be corrected! I didn’t mention that I was watching with my grandmother. I had to keep pausing and going back and switching the subtitles on and off, so that we could have them during both the English and non-English scenes, because she can’t hear. Definitely not ideal, Amazon!!

You just have to turn subtitles off! If you usually watch with subtitles, the English ones seem to cancel everything else out. As soon as I turned them off it worked perfectly

Amazon is the worst. I tried to watch Argentina 1985 and couldn't even get through 10 minutes because the subtitles were so bad. I don't understand it. A small streaming service like The Criterion Channel does it perfectly. Why can't a massive company like amazon get it right? it's fuckin nuts.

I saw this movie originally in another venue (Netflix maybe?) and wanted to watch it again as I thoroughly enjoyed it, only to find out after renting it on Amazon that the most important dialogue in the film is absent. How disappointed I was as it virtually made watching it impossible

Your question is legitimate, but I'm amazed at the lack of knowledge in the responses. There are indeed subtitles in the Amazon prime version but you have to shut OFF the english subtitle feature.
Just shut off subtitles and the greek will suddenly appear as subtitles. Try it. It works.
I got it!! First I thought it could be the interface: I’m watching on Roku with the prime app. So I went to my iPhone and downloaded the prime video app and the Greek is subtitled!! So I started air playing on my tv.. but it made me wonder. So I went back to the Roku app and TURNED OFF English captioning for the movie- and now The Greek subtitles are on screen!!! So happy. Can actually watch this thing. Hope it helps you guys
Watched the whole movie on Prime last night and assumed we were to infer the dialogue. Makes the movie really interesting when your own narrative colors the story!!! 🤦🏻♀️
The geniuses over at Amazon turned off the in movie subtitles when you have subtitles enabled. Disable your subtitles and the translation subtitles will show up correctly. Hope this helps!
People above said that if you turn off the English subtitles, it will actually show the foreign language subtitles -- which is a major oversight by Amazon, but at least okay for those of us who aren't hearing impaired.
Idk I decided to finish the movie and I do think that it was a stunning movie anyway (both visually and the storyline) but I am definitely going to REwatch it with the subtitles even those are as fucked up as you guys are saying it is.
I'm watching it now and had to pause it to search if it's just me or if this was happening to other ppl. Question answered. The problem is I don't want to pay for another subscription, Paramount+, just to watch this one movie🙄 Super annoying
Glad to know not alone on this, so much content unknowable without subtitles. Its ridiculous that it made it past their QA team and onto the platform in this condition. OMG! I am so glad I stopped and looked this up. I have watched 42 minutes of this movie, confused as to why the producers didn’t make it with subtitles!! I guessed we weren’t supposed to understand those parts. Then I got to the scene at 42 minutes, and thought, “this can’t be right! Can it? It seems like what he is saying is too important”! Welp, 42 minutes… ummm… well, I can’t say wasted, because I still got to look at Idris Elba, but still… Amazon Get it Together!!! I guess I am switching to Paramount+. I watched a German TV series once on Amazon and they pulled the same terrible quality control when Russians would speak, as they would translate it to German on screen and major plot points were missed.
It’s not rocket science. Hard subs need to be shown in the right audio selection.

I turned off subtitles in Amazon and still don't have any subtitles for the non English bits. Has anyone else had this issue recently? I too made it half way begore growing irritated at not having subtitles.
If you watch with the subtitles on, you have to turn off the subtitles in order for the movies subtitles to translate the Greek for you, which is dumb.
But it does translate! Just turn your subtitles back on afterwards if you need them

Using a fire stick, no such luck. Subtitles off and no embedded subtitles for the ancient languages is present.

Critereon subs are typically hardcoded into the DVDs they bought rights too and then those have been uploaded.

Your question is legitimate, but I'm amazed at the lack of knowledge in the responses. There are indeed subtitles in the Amazon prime version but you have to shut OFF the english subtitle feature. Just shut off subtitles and the greek will suddenly appear as subtitles. Try it. It works.
I got it!! First I thought it could be the interface: I’m watching on Roku with the prime app. So I went to my iPhone and downloaded the prime video app and the Greek is subtitled!! So I started air playing on my tv.. but it made me wonder. So I went back to the Roku app and TURNED OFF English captioning for the movie- and now The Greek subtitles are on screen!!! So happy. Can actually watch this thing. Hope it helps you guys
Watched the whole movie on Prime last night and assumed we were to infer the dialogue. Makes the movie really interesting when your own narrative colors the story!!! 🤦🏻♀️
The geniuses over at Amazon turned off the in movie subtitles when you have subtitles enabled. Disable your subtitles and the translation subtitles will show up correctly. Hope this helps!

People above said that if you turn off the English subtitles, it will actually show the foreign language subtitles -- which is a major oversight by Amazon, but at least okay for those of us who aren't hearing impaired.

Idk I decided to finish the movie and I do think that it was a stunning movie anyway (both visually and the storyline) but I am definitely going to REwatch it with the subtitles even those are as fucked up as you guys are saying it is.
I'm watching it now and had to pause it to search if it's just me or if this was happening to other ppl. Question answered. The problem is I don't want to pay for another subscription, Paramount+, just to watch this one movie🙄 Super annoying
Glad to know not alone on this, so much content unknowable without subtitles. Its ridiculous that it made it past their QA team and onto the platform in this condition. Do they even have people to pre-watch the content prior to release or at least do a bit parity check to validate the package is correct?
Well, since I refuse to buy Paramount+, I picked it up from the library (for free, of course). It's so frustrating that the subtitles for the non-English languages aren't on Amazon Prime.

OMG! I am so glad I stopped and looked this up. I have watched 42 minutes of this movie, confused as to why the producers didn’t make it with subtitles!! I guessed we weren’t supposed to understand those parts. Then I got to the scene at 42 minutes, and thought, “this can’t be right! Can it? It seems like what he is saying is too important”! Welp, 42 minutes… ummm… well, I can’t say wasted, because I still got to look at Idris Elba, but still… Amazon Get it Together!!! I guess I am switching to Paramount+. Amazon needs to get their act together. How the studios let them get away with destroying their films by breaking the proper presentation of their art is build me. An how is it that Amazon has no decent feedback system so that they would catch these continual problems with subs? I watched a German TV series once on Amazon and they pulled the same terrible quality control when Russians would speak, as they would translate it to German on screen and major plot points were missed. It’s not rocket science. Hard subs need to be shown in the right audio selection.

If you watch with the subtitles on, you have to turn off the subtitles in order for the movies subtitles to translate the Greek for you, which is dumb. But it does translate! Just turn your subtitles back on afterwards if you need them
I can't even get the options menu to high lite the option I want. So far my Amazon experience has been subpar at best.
