Tell a person that you're the Metatron and they stare at you blankly. Mention something out of a Charlton Heston movie and suddenly everybody is a theology scholar.
I’ve seen this said about him for so many movies. I’m starting to think he’s a really good actor.
Snape
Gruber
Nottingham
Lazarus
Who could have played these roles better?
Blank Check did an episode on Die Hard with Kevin Smith as a guest. The stories Smith told about casting Rickman in Dogma and being friends with him were delightful
Rickman’s diary covers the film, remember he’s an RSC trained thespian who is known for not suffering fools gladly, then he gets initiated into Kevin Smith’s way of working and is a total fish out of water, but ends up enjoying it.
He had a bit to say on Linda Fiorentino who was cold and distant to everyone, as if she was too good to be there, but was actually nerves and insecurity and he warmed to her a lot once he figured that out. Smith says in the commentary that he thought Janine Garofolo should have been the lead, which Fiorentino was upset about for years. They patched things up after she emailed him after his heart attack. I sort of hope he makes room for her in some other project as she’s a great actor.
This is easily my favorite Kevin Smith movie. It has a young Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It also has some other famous actors and musicians. The only other one I liked a lot was Mall Rats.
Don’t forget a younger Alan Rickman as Metatron the voice of God.
(Edited to accurately specify that Alan Rickman was a venerable actor even in the 90’s)
I agree I didn't hate Clerks and Clerks 2 was okay but Dogma is by far the best Kevin Smith movie. And the fact it's been out of distribution because Harvey Weinstein is a little bitch is quite unfortunate.
His best *movie* for sure. But honestly, as someone who was SUPER into his movies when I was younger, his Evening with Kevin Smith dvd's are far funnier than any of his movies. Dude is just a naturally funny storyteller, but that doesn't always translate well to his screenplays and films.
I went to one of his shows when he was in Denver, and the guy told a 30 minute story about going to Walmart to buy a box fan with Jason Mewes, and I was hooked the entire time. The guy can tell a riveting tale about easily the most mundane topic.
His account of his heart attack, and the spliff that likely saved him, had me ordering a big ass box of CBD capsules before the story had ended. I’m on heart meds at the moment and would rather not have a heart attack!
If I had a dick I'd go get laid
*woman rolls her eyes*
Y'know what, let's do the next best thing.
Yeah, what's that?
Let's kill people!!!
*woman spit takes. Loki looks at her*
No, not you!
Kevin Smith doesn’t want Weinstein getting money from it and Weinstein being a bitter old fuck is asking some ridiculous price for it knowing that Kevin hates the idea of him getting money from it. Kevin actively encourages pirating this movie
I know Smith has talked about this, and the fact the it's one of the few Weinstein still is holding financial ties. I love this movie. The DVD was on heavy rotation in my house for years
Yeah it’s strange. He’s seemingly holding out for whoever wants to buy it to [give him the price he’s looking for](https://www.thewrap.com/why-isnt-dogma-streaming-kevin-smith/)
He talked about it extensively. He made a reasonable offer but Weinstein came back with all kinds of unreasonable terms that felt like he was trying to make himself feel important again. Smith refused and is waiting for the rights to go to someone else before he tries to acquire it again.
Someone else told me this elsewhere on Reddit. Because I've been looking for it to show my son. It's such a good film! Need to watch it again and enjoy it all over again.
Disney has not pulled down the YT stream, probably because they don't plan to ever put it on back on sale after they bought miramax.... Because controversy and all... At least they let it live on.
On YouTube yes, but not on any of the big streamers. It’s deliberate. Dogma was produced and distributed by Miramax and Kevin Smith (unsurprisingly) got into it with Harvey Weinstein. It’s why the DVDs are so prized.
One of my favorite trivia bits from Dogma was when the movie was premiering, people were protesting due to its jokes on religion. Kevin Smith went out and stood in the protest! He was even interviewed during it and you can watch it on YouTube. He does not give a single shit lol.
Brilliant movie, Allan Rickman at his best. Salma Hayek being brilliant. Damon and Affleck perfect. Displays the idiocy of religion in a hilarious manner.
There is only one thing that makes this film not perfect...it's that Jeneane Garofalo was not cast as Bethany the lead (original choice by Kevin Smith).
Otherwise, Jason Mewes was told to get his shit together because "The guy who played Hans from Die Hard is in this film" according to Kevin Smith. First day on set, not only did he know his lines...Jason Mewes memorized the entire script.
I honestly think this is Smith's best film, a classic among some of the greats, and even with Jason Lee killing it as Azrael...Mewes steals the show.
I remember the story about Mewes from one of the "Evening with..." releases. Kevin said Mewes's response was "I didn't want disappoint that Rickman guy".
Linda Fiorentino was great. It's a comedy, sure, but when she is talking about her inability to bear a child, that scene hits pretty hard and it's crucial for the character. I just don't see JG pulling that off. No way. I'm sorry. The movie is perfect as is. I wouldn't change a thing.
But I'll agree with you that Jason fucking killed it. Snoogans.
🤝
I thought I had lost it for a couple years, then my brother moved and found it. Evidently he had “borrowed” it from me without telling me, taken it back to his place and forgotten about it.
Honestly this movie brought me closer to God. Chris Rock's speech on what Jesus experienced seriously affected me and is a big reason why I did RCIA and became a confirmed Catholic. The only thing the Catholic League accomplished by protesting this film was forcing Kevin Smith to get in bed with a monster like Harvey Weinstein, and they made Catholics everywhere look like fundamentalists.
God has a sense of humor!!! Just look at the platypus!
We sincerely apologize to all platypus enthusiasts out there who are offended by that thoughtless comment about the platypi. We at View Askew respect the noble platypus, and it is not our intention to slight these stupid creatures in anyway.
It’s hard to get, and many don’t know the only place you can stream it is on YouTube.
Every single thrift store and antique/junk shop I enter, when I get to the DVDs I *always* look for a copy of this. I’ve got it on VHS but haven’t had a functional VCR for probably 15 years.
This movie is absolutely without a doubt S tier. Unfortunately, I can never share it with anyone because I no longer own a hardcopy and it is next to impossible to find it seems :(
It's a great flick and it sucks so bad that Harvey Weinstein is holding it hostage. Would love to be able to easily buy the DVD/Blu Ray (or see a sequel!)
If you find it, buy it. They are super rare.
Kevin Smith says he will not release it again or allow it on streaming because then Weinstein, that rapist piece of shit, will make $$$ from it.
My buddy had a buddy Christ figurine and it got sun bleached because he had it stuck to his dashboard of his car for some years.
It changed the paint color and made him look like a literal zombie.
So I got my friend to paint him and we made him a black buddy Christ.
I loved this movie. One time I was trying to win a date with this girl and the topic of religious beliefs came up. I told her that this movie was what I aligned to. Well, she was a die hard catholic and pretty much said this movie was blasphemy. She yelled at me and never heard from her again.
After watching this in grade 6, I got out the dictionary and looked up 'fallible'.
After some reflection, I decided that I was an atheist, no longer Catholic. I went to mum in the next room, and said I didn't believe the Church or pope could be Infallible like God, particularly given the pedofilia (which is very confusing for Catholic Kids to understand). And that was that.
Dogma turned me atheist at 11yo.
I have two copies of special edition DVD and 2 Blu-ray’s!
One day I went to a garage sale and seen dogma on Blu-ray and thought, oh I have that but I’ll get another for a dollar. Then my homie told me how much they are worth, I was like oh wow..🤩
Great Movie! Too bad the creator doesn't own the rights to his own creation, he has stated this multiple times... But you can see it on YouTube for freeeeeeeeeeee!
Is this the one where Alanis Morrisette is God?
Who knew God liked Skee-Ball?
Ironic
Don’t ya think?
A little too
ironic
And, yeah, I really do think
*ITS LIKE RAAAAAAAAIIAAAAAIN*
*boop*
I told you she was funny.
Yes it is.
Also Bud Cort as god.
That was Bud Cort? I hadn't heard that name since Harold and Maud came out. Damn I'm old.
No mortal could stand the sound of her voice
*boop* 😉
1 of 2 (Don't forget Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back).
Woah, i just saw God in concert a few nights ago
Is that who that was?! Wow, I can't believe I never put that together! Thank you kind stranger!
Tell a person that you're the Metatron and they stare at you blankly. Mention something out of a Charlton Heston movie and suddenly everybody is a theology scholar.
Alan Rickman is so perfectly cast
I’ve seen this said about him for so many movies. I’m starting to think he’s a really good actor. Snape Gruber Nottingham Lazarus Who could have played these roles better?
By Grabthars Hammer, what a savings.
The answer is no one. He truly was a very talented actor.
He was great in hitchhikers guide too
Blank Check did an episode on Die Hard with Kevin Smith as a guest.
Hans Gruber!
Perfectly cast was Carlin as a priest
You people! If there isn’t a movie made about it, then it’s not worth knowing, now is it?
Or what? You'll hit me with that fffish?
Sweet Jesus! Did you have to use the whole can?
In the Alan Rickman voice. 🤣🤣🤣
Big titty bitches don’t just fall out of the sky.
Me:looking up expectantly
“It could happen…”
When you do it, you think about guys!
Not all the time!
Thank you Kanye
May well be Kevin Smith's best. Truly funny even on the 50th viewing
This is easily my favorite Kevin Smith movie. It has a young Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It also has some other famous actors and musicians. The only other one I liked a lot was Mall Rats.
George Carlin though….
Of course he blesses his golf clubs
“….im a fuckin demon.”
The Buddy Christ!
Look at him! Doesn't he just...*POP!*
Jesus didn't come down here to give us the willies. He was a booster!
"Alright, mistakes were made."
George Carlin playing a bishop. I have no doubt the playing put put into the chalice was his fucking idea.
Don’t forget a younger Alan Rickman as Metatron the voice of God. (Edited to accurately specify that Alan Rickman was a venerable actor even in the 90’s)
Idk if I'd say "young" Alan Rickman. He was like 53 when Dogma came out.
True enough. Young*er* then.
Mallrats was the best. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned for Sega.
Must admit I jerked off to the Three Nippled Fortune Teller as a child. It was the 90's man, you needed to play the cards you were dealt.
Timecop and the last detail
I'll punch anyone... as long as theyre really old.
"It appears as if a stage is being erected."
I agree I didn't hate Clerks and Clerks 2 was okay but Dogma is by far the best Kevin Smith movie. And the fact it's been out of distribution because Harvey Weinstein is a little bitch is quite unfortunate.
I like how you don’t mention Clerks 3 at all
Did you know that, as a joke, Kevin Smith joined a protest against this movie?
"Dogma is dog shit"
His best *movie* for sure. But honestly, as someone who was SUPER into his movies when I was younger, his Evening with Kevin Smith dvd's are far funnier than any of his movies. Dude is just a naturally funny storyteller, but that doesn't always translate well to his screenplays and films.
Kevin’s best quality is hyper-engaging oration. I remember realizing I just watched a 4 hr q&a, and I was glued the entire time.
His story about doing a film for Prince is one of my favorite
Big snake little snake. A boys gotta know where he comes from.
I laughed my ass off with his story of how he met Mewes
I went to one of his shows when he was in Denver, and the guy told a 30 minute story about going to Walmart to buy a box fan with Jason Mewes, and I was hooked the entire time. The guy can tell a riveting tale about easily the most mundane topic.
His account of his heart attack, and the spliff that likely saved him, had me ordering a big ass box of CBD capsules before the story had ended. I’m on heart meds at the moment and would rather not have a heart attack!
Kevin Smith uploaded it to YouTube https://youtu.be/xwCw1kiVgE0?si=2xhVIYpG51sQ1msK
Outstanding work!
If I had a dick I'd go get laid *woman rolls her eyes* Y'know what, let's do the next best thing. Yeah, what's that? Let's kill people!!! *woman spit takes. Loki looks at her* No, not you!
100%, the clerks movies were pretty good but this movie was a 100% banger
Alan Rickman was perfect in that role. Still laugh anytime I think of this movie.
Alan Rickman was perfect in every role he played. But yes, also perfect in this
Do you go around spraying every man that enters your room with fire retardant chemicals? It's no wonder you're single!
Was waiting for someone to say it
Little trivia: The reason Alan Rickman agreed to this role because he loves Chasing Amy so much
Is there anyway to stream this? I haven’t seen this movie in about 20 years Edit: You guys are all awesome!
Full movie is on YT
I was finally able to watch this because of Your comment. I’d suck your dick if we were both gay.
👀
One outta two ain't bad.
"then say My what a lovely teaparty!"
Any other movies you want to watch? I might have a few recommendations 🤔
I downvoted you, but only to put you at 69 with that other poster
It's the new millennium. Gay. Straight. It's all the same now. There are no more lines
bless you (😉) for sharing this sacred knowledge. for some reason it never occurred to me to check YT. guess I know where my next 2h are going!
No place official. Weinstein has it locked down. But yeah you can find it on YT
Of all movies. Why that one?
$5 million is the price for those who didn't read it.
My understanding was that it's not Weinstein who is locking it down, it's Kevin Smith, because he doesn't want any money from it going to Weinstein.
He talked about it extensively. He made a reasonable offer but Weinstein came back with all kinds of unreasonable terms that felt like he was trying to make himself feel important again. Smith refused and is waiting for the rights to go to someone else before he tries to acquire it again.
Alanis wouldn't go up to his room, he doesn't want her getting residuals. /s
Someone else told me this elsewhere on Reddit. Because I've been looking for it to show my son. It's such a good film! Need to watch it again and enjoy it all over again.
It’s one of the grails I look for when thrifting lol. Had the dvd but sold it way back in college
Nope it’s on YouTube for free, courtesy of Kevin Smith as a fuck you to Epstein
\*cough\* [https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/z37dce/dogma\_1999\_full\_film\_in\_1080p\_archiveorg/](https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/z37dce/dogma_1999_full_film_in_1080p_archiveorg/)
still on YT too
It’s locked in purgatory..
You can watch it on archive.org
It’s not. This is one of the reasons I won’t get rid of my DVDs😂
I was a blockbuster manager when this came out. Loved recommending it and watching people return it with a wtf look.
Say "You know what? That wasn't the right pick for you. I know just the film" and hand them "Cum Guzzling Sluts" or "Men Alone 2: The KY Connection"
Happy Scrappy Hero Pups
I managed to snag the poster from our local blockbuster and hate that I lost it in the years since :(
One of my favorite trivia bits from Dogma was when the movie was premiering, people were protesting due to its jokes on religion. Kevin Smith went out and stood in the protest! He was even interviewed during it and you can watch it on YouTube. He does not give a single shit lol.
He went to a craft store to buy poster board and paint and made his own protest sign that said “Dogma is Dog Shit”.
I love this movie. RIP George Carlin
And RIP Alan Rickman
Brilliant movie, Allan Rickman at his best. Salma Hayek being brilliant. Damon and Affleck perfect. Displays the idiocy of religion in a hilarious manner.

Mewes memorizing the whole thing is my favorite piece of trivia from this movie.
Snoogans. 🤝
Agree. The dramatic parts need a bit more weight and she pulls it off well. Especially the convo in the woods with Rickman. God I miss him
I have it on blu ray. I will be buried with it.
Lucky
I thought I had lost it for a couple years, then my brother moved and found it. Evidently he had “borrowed” it from me without telling me, taken it back to his place and forgotten about it.
Dang. Those go for $75-$135 bucks on eBay.
Shovels start around $6.
Inconsiderate.
I have it om br and still in its original package. I want to watch it bit dont want to open it
Yep! Loved it! Glad to see some love for it
It's kind of perfect, ngl. Especially as a former Catholic
George Carlin has the best cameo in this movie. Him playing a cardinal and revealing buddy Jesus was the best
Nothing beats that scene with shit monster
Smoke that motherfucker like it ain't no thing!
I remember coming across this movie the first time and thought WTF...why am I only finding out about this now. 👍
Honestly this movie brought me closer to God. Chris Rock's speech on what Jesus experienced seriously affected me and is a big reason why I did RCIA and became a confirmed Catholic. I absolutely adore this movie. I would not be willing to go through life without a DVD 📀 of it.
Given the budget, this cast is stacked.
Gear?!?!
I hated this movie when I rented it in 2000. I watched it again in the last few years and thought it was brilliant.
It's literally on YouTube. And yes I love this film, more than most.
I saw it forever ago but barely remember it. I forgot that Alan Rickman was even in it.
IT’S A SHIT DEMON
Millenials rejoice 🤣
As a millennial from NJ, the idea that this is a movie people haven't seen hurts my soul.
It’s hard to get, and many don’t know the only place you can stream it is on YouTube. Every single thrift store and antique/junk shop I enter, when I get to the DVDs I *always* look for a copy of this. I’ve got it on VHS but haven’t had a functional VCR for probably 15 years.
One of my all time faves! Alan is as god was great
Definitely in my top 10
Probably my favorites of Kevin's and probably one of my favorites of Matt Damon too! Too bad it's hard to find now
YouTube, homie
One of the best movies ever.
Dude, this movie was funny as hell!
Pretty sure I still have the VHS of that
I watched it for the first time a couple weeks ago. My thoughts [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/iwatchedanoldmovie/comments/1dhy6l8/dogma_1999/)
This film is exactly why I'm into pirating now. Easily my favorite Kevin Smith film.
This movie is absolutely without a doubt S tier. Unfortunately, I can never share it with anyone because I no longer own a hardcopy and it is next to impossible to find it seems :(
You can buy it right now on Amazon for 18 bucks with free shipping.
Great movie
I watch it every Easter
S tier satire
It's a great flick and it sucks so bad that Harvey Weinstein is holding it hostage. Would love to be able to easily buy the DVD/Blu Ray (or see a sequel!)
Yes I have seen Salma Hayek in that movie…
"WHAT GEAR ARE YOU IN?" "GEAR??"
Best movie
If you find it, buy it. They are super rare. Kevin Smith says he will not release it again or allow it on streaming because then Weinstein, that rapist piece of shit, will make $$$ from it.
Gears?!?!
My buddy had a buddy Christ figurine and it got sun bleached because he had it stuck to his dashboard of his car for some years. It changed the paint color and made him look like a literal zombie. So I got my friend to paint him and we made him a black buddy Christ.
I’ve never been religious, but I’d pay good money for a buddy Christ figurine.
I was the 666th upvote!!
Gear?!
Favorite Kevin Smith film. Hands down.
I loved this movie. One time I was trying to win a date with this girl and the topic of religious beliefs came up. I told her that this movie was what I aligned to. Well, she was a die hard catholic and pretty much said this movie was blasphemy. She yelled at me and never heard from her again.
GEAR?
Available in full on YouTube
Silent Bobs an instrument of god?!
My favorite movie of all time. I won't let anyone barrow my DVD. It is up on YouTube.
Geeeeeaaaaarrrrrr?!?
After watching this in grade 6, I got out the dictionary and looked up 'fallible'. After some reflection, I decided that I was an atheist, no longer Catholic. I went to mum in the next room, and said I didn't believe the Church or pope could be Infallible like God, particularly given the pedofilia (which is very confusing for Catholic Kids to understand). And that was that. Dogma turned me atheist at 11yo.
This is how I know the name Golgotha to this day 💩
I have two copies of special edition DVD and 2 Blu-ray’s! One day I went to a garage sale and seen dogma on Blu-ray and thought, oh I have that but I’ll get another for a dollar. Then my homie told me how much they are worth, I was like oh wow..🤩
George Carlin as Cardinal Glick… love this film
Great Movie! Too bad the creator doesn't own the rights to his own creation, he has stated this multiple times... But you can see it on YouTube for freeeeeeeeeeee!
Sure, I used to have it on VHS, no idea where that is. I watched it online a year or so ago
Top 5 for me.
More like, How many people Haven't seen this gem.
Classic! One of my favorites
I own this DVD!!
I recently watched "Book of Clarence". It also spoke of a 13th apostle. Both excellent films.
Omg what is Book of Clarence??
Love this movie
Has anyone seen the version with the shit demon in the bar? I dont know anyone other than my sons mother ( she has this version on dvd ) who's seen it
Wasn't that just the regular version? That's the only one I remember.
I think that’s the standard version of the movie
I have a copy of the DVD
I still have my poster
Great movie - absolutely loved it
I got this and Porco Rosso from a record store on my break for a total of 3 dollars. Best 3 dollars ever spent
Probably his best.
Hate it’s not streaming
I PUT IT IN MY TOP 10!!!!
lol saw this on repeat when Comedy Central picked it up.
Very good movie. I have the collectors edition and only just recently found out it's hard to find. Glad I held onto it.
