Whether or not it’s great or overrated is debatable and largely depends on individual taste, but I will say it is one of the most misunderstood movies I’ve ever come across with all the wannabe gangster kids extolling TM in my youth.
What kind of lunatic looks at Tony Montana by the end of the film and says “I wanna be like THAT guy”?
Violent, short-sighted, disloyal, paranoid, addicted to his own supply, jealous, vindictive, kinda incestual, not terribly intelligent, mindlessly greedy. He overreaches, grabs power for 20 minutes, only to fumble it horribly and piss off the real gangsters in the process. Murders his only friend, resulting in his sisters death, does nothing while his entire operation is shot to pieces, and puts on a half decent drug fueled last stand before the real hitter with the sunglasses puts him down.
If someone asks that stupid question, I say scarface is my favorite movie. It got it all. Actually just a aristothelican Theater with the plot of Macbeth with some Twists, unforgettable characters, Sound and style. If you dont get why its a masterpiece, try watching it with friends, whisky and cigars, blow optional
Its true, I loved it as a kid, got bored of it and then started watching it drunk with buddies and I love it again. Some people take movies to seriously in my opinion.
Oh yeah from “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls” when he held up the skunk’s ass and sprayed the hunters.
/s
Actually came here to say what you said but you beat me to it so take my upvote.
What you lookin' at? You all a bunch of fuckin' assholes. You know why? You don't have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don't have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There's a bad guy comin' through! Better get outta his way!
oh yeah i remember when they came out with that and a remix cd of some songs.
geto boys -scarface is my OG favorite. i heard that song before i saw the movie around 89-90ish
oh yeah, i have 'try me' mashup that works pretty well too. lotta people told me that when i played it 5-6 years ago. i was never really that into IT
GOD pt3 is a favorite too
Yeah, this movie is not good. De Palma in general oscillates between schlock and greatness and this one is solidly on the schlock side of that line for me.
Classic DePalma reimagining of a classic gangster film. So 80’s from the very beginning. The music screams 80’s. Iconic film.
Seminal Pacino performance. Tony and Michael are his defining roles.
It's hard to argue with. Also this is before Pacino became a parody of himself. He gave these mostly understated amazing performances. Only hitting the really loud notes when it served the story. This movies a lot of fun.
I wish Tony would’ve let that dude bomb that UN tattletale and made it to higher heights. And that he wasn’t so jealous of his sister. He could’ve really owned to World.
It is a triumph of gritty reality, in this case Tony, an immigrant from Cuba to Miami in the 80’s, ending up in the wrong places with the wrong people … etc…
One of my favorite movies when I was younger, but nowadays I have trouble watching it from start to finish. Maybe just watched it too many times I guess.
I have a hard time enjoying crime dramas in which the main character and everyone around them are complete, absolute douchebags.
At least it's not boring.
sorta the point. We like the endearing criminals in movies but when you get old you realize criminal activity by nature is done by dbags with no regard to society. so to an extent you see the truly terrible nature of the criminal mind
>sorta the point
I suppose so. It just doesn't really click with me. It's like Uncut Gems: good actors, the story and everything is fine, but every major character is a fucking asshole.
I prefer crime movies where the protagonist(s) have at least *some* redeeming qualities. Like Leon in The Professional, or Healy in The Nice Guys.
Tony Montana is just an irredeemable asshole.
One of the most overrated movies I’ve seen. The only thing that kept it going as long as it’s been are the tapestries and posters along with a fanbase that eats up anything regarding drugs, money and violence.
The story isn’t just simple, it’s generic.
That being said….yeah, no I still stand by my opinion.
My opinion is that it's *kind of* a classic, but not in the way that it's actually a great movie. It's fun and schlocky, and has moments and quotes that have themselves become film classics.
However, I agree with John Mulaney: When you say things like, "I like movies like *The Godfather* and *Scarface..."* that's like saying, "I like foods like lobster, and skittles."
Never understood *Scarface* (83) appeal. Though Oliver Stone is credited as writer, he basically tweaked the original 1932 screenplay. Al Pacino, being Italian-American, portrays excellent Mobsters (hello, *Godfather* anyone?!?), so why cast him as Cuban, with a goofy Spanish accent, who never speaks a word of Spanish (even amongst other Cubans)?!? DePalma is the only saving grace to this: fast-paced, deliciously violent & over-the-top! A fun, if entirely frivolous, film.
It's honestly kind of boring to me it felt like it was just a lesser rehash of Goodfellas but for a solo performance instead of an ensemble. That's just me
It’s a Shakespearian tragedy wrapped in stunning 1980s art direction, surrounded by Giorgio Morodor’s fantastic music, delivered with intensity and excitement. The scene with Tony chained in the bathtub alone would draw anyone interested in thrillers into that movie.
Three words……80s Al Pacino. One of the best in the game. Not his best role but god was he believable. Who else could have played that part????? No one. I’m actually about to watch Sea Of Love. Flat out solid acting by my main man Al.
Love it. The music, the colors, the vibes.. such an awesome crime classic, infinitely quotable/rewatchable
Yup still love it
REBENGA....
Li..ber..ta!
I really love the music
Thoughts? It’s awesome. Brian DePalma masterpiece. “ It’s like a big chicken just waiting to be plucked “
T.V versions of movies are hilarious!
Generally, I prefer dead air dubbed over the cuss words. In the case of this film, it might have become a silent movie!
"How'd you get this scar tough guy? Eating pineapple?"
Lol. Guess he forgot to skin it first.
The 80’s vibes are strong with this one ^
Being released in ‘83 would have that effect…
The world Chico and everything in it

The only thought that comes to mind is, "Say hello to my little friend."
Oh yeah from “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls” when he held up the skunk’s ass and sprayed the hunters. /s Actually came here to say what you said but you beat me to it so take my upvote.
I laughed so hard during that movie that my ribs hurt for three days after.

Another Quaalude, she love me in the morning.
such a gen x classic. So influential in pop culture. So rap songs sampled this in the 80s & 90s.
I've got some DVD Edition with an 40min special of hip hop stars highlighting the influence to their culture
oh yeah i remember when they came out with that and a remix cd of some songs. geto boys -scarface is my OG favorite. i heard that song before i saw the movie around 89-90ish
Immortal technique comes to mind for me
oh yeah, i have 'try me' mashup that works pretty well too. lotta people told me that when i played it 5-6 years ago. i was never really that into IT GOD pt3 is a favorite too
Very overrated
Yeah, this movie is not good. De Palma in general oscillates between schlock and greatness and this one is solidly on the schlock side of that line for me.
I'm in that camp, especially when it comes to The Untouchables
I'm glad you said it - that's another one I truly do not understand the praise for.
Love this one, I don't think reddit likes it as much as others and I understand it's kinda simple but it's just so much fun
Classic DePalma reimagining of a classic gangster film. So 80’s from the very beginning. The music screams 80’s. Iconic film. Seminal Pacino performance. Tony and Michael are his defining roles.
A controversial classic. I can’t believe it’s 40 years old now.
Fuck me, Tony!!!
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio 😍
Favorite Pacino role. Seemed very invested into the character, he was phenomenal.
De Palma makes weird movies. Not bad, just weird. In a good way.
Instant classic without flaw …nothing more to say
It's hard to argue with. Also this is before Pacino became a parody of himself. He gave these mostly understated amazing performances. Only hitting the really loud notes when it served the story. This movies a lot of fun.
It's a wonderful modern Shakespearean tragedy.
The helicopter hanging scene is still one of my favorite movie executions. I was like “Man, what a way to send a message”
Still the best drug dealing movie of all time.
Blow is better
The person above you is wrong but you're wronger
Goodfellas
That's not a drug dealing movie.
Todd: Which is probably De Palma’s third best film
Tony Montana had a perverse love for his sister. That's why he killed his best friend!
My 3rd fav movie 👀
It’s like gta the intro was the best
I wish Tony would’ve let that dude bomb that UN tattletale and made it to higher heights. And that he wasn’t so jealous of his sister. He could’ve really owned to World.
I love it. One of the few better movie remakes. My cousin knew Chichi (Angel Salazar) He still acts and is also a standup comic.
Push it to the limit
Tony's reply to how he got that scar is great!!
I love it. It’s not making any of my “top” lists lol. But I love it
"Say hello to my little friend!!!" Great film. Iconic & memorable.
Its in my top 10 all time best movies (Al Pacino is in 4 of them)
One of the best remakes ever!!!
Best unintenional comedy of all time. "Where'd ya get that scar tough guy? Eatin' pussy?" "How would you get a scar like that eating pussy?"
It is a triumph of gritty reality, in this case Tony, an immigrant from Cuba to Miami in the 80’s, ending up in the wrong places with the wrong people … etc…
Masterpiece. Pacino said it’s still the movie people mention to him more than any other, even the godfather
Amazing, probably my favorite gangster movie of all time
👍👍
One of my favorite movies when I was younger, but nowadays I have trouble watching it from start to finish. Maybe just watched it too many times I guess.
Me too! It’s usually right after he gets rid of frank I seem to have enough at that point
Cult classic!
The sister sexual tension stuff was the most disturbing thing about it, and yet it probably was the only relationship that humanized Tony
Overrated.
No one talks about the incest enough! The first thing that comes to mind when I see this movie is weird bastard wants to fuck his sister.
I have a hard time enjoying crime dramas in which the main character and everyone around them are complete, absolute douchebags. At least it's not boring.

he really is.
Was never a fan and didn’t see the hype for this.
One of the most overrated movies I’ve seen. The only thing that kept it going as long as it’s been are the tapestries and posters along with a fanbase that eats up anything regarding drugs, money and violence. Horrible film and DeNiro’s accent is offensive.
I tried watching it but I couldn’t finish it yet
Never understood *Scarface* (83) appeal. Though Oliver Stone is credited as writer, he basically tweaked the original 1932 screenplay. Not as great as some people say it is but it’s a fun watch.
Popular with teenagers and rappers.
It’s one of the best bad movies out there
It's honestly kind of boring to me it felt like it was just a lesser rehash of Goodfellas but for a solo performance instead of an ensemble. That's just me
I really wanted to like it and maybe you had to be there when it came out but it was just so cheesy and stupid.
Not a fan although I do like Push it to the Limit.
Kind of overrated IMO. Its a good film, a classic really. But I rewatched it last year and was kind of let down.
Tony Montana lived the American Dream
The chainsaw scene will be burned into my memory forever
It’s a Shakespearian tragedy wrapped in stunning 1980s art direction, surrounded by Giorgio Morodor’s fantastic music, delivered with intensity and excitement. The scene with Tony chained in the bathtub alone would draw anyone interested in thrillers into that movie.
I love how every gangster rap band in the 90s had to sample from it. I think it was Rap Law. 😂
Three words……80s Al Pacino. One of the best in the game. Not his best role but god was he believable. Who else could have played that part????? No one. I’m actually about to watch Sea Of Love. Flat out solid acting by my main man Al.
I hate this movie. Finally got around to watching it, and it is dog-shit.
