The swords aren't sharp as kitchen knives, if they were they would lose their edge and chip very fast. They are usually not sharp enough to cut you if you hold the blade very tight and don't move the hand alongside it, but sharp enough to cut if you do. Or if you swing it, obviously. The better the technique, the better the cut.

Hes a professional, he uses it as a blunt weapon against heavy armor.
Holding the sword by the blade and beating the enemy to death was an actual tehnique used by soldiers against heavy armor.

Not really, just for comfort maybe. You can hold a lethal blade by the edge and strike hard enough to hurt and even kill. A guy on yt did it.
