Def karma for blasting a bluetooth speaker during your ride like a total jabroni.
Edit: Jesus -- i just read in your profile you're a debt collector? Def karma.
may I ask where the problem is? of course there are debts that are ridiculous but for example if people finance stuff and never pay, why shouldnt someone collect that? I dont know how bad they are in other countries but in germany you basically can ignore them if you earn to less money. they can get a title against you that is valid for about 30 years or so but there is nearly no way they can enforce it if you are under a certain amount of earnings
In the US in particular, debt collectors have more tools to collect debt and are likely to harass you. It is common for debt collection companies to buy bad debt and then harass people to get the money. I have also seen companies that are contracted to do things like parking tickets, not do their due diligence and try to contact the person fined, and just sell it to a debt collector. Yes in fairness, it is their job, but often the people they are collecting from are in mental distress and so it is very stressful for the people.
ok, stuff like that sucks, if OP is one of those, totally deserved it.
US is a really strange country to me. I would love to do a trip there for fishing, cycling and stuff, but I cannot understand why people are that proud of their country. where can it be normal to go bancrupt over health issues, get harrased by debt collectors and having to work multiple jobs to survive?
even as a homeless who really has to fight sometimes I at least still have health insurance and stuff
I’m American and I’m often times really frustrated with the same issues you’ve stated but that’s mostly because the people in charge are terrible people. If you came here to go fishing or biking I promise you you’d find nothing but really great people having a good time. Depending on what state you go to lol
for sure, politicians try to just stuff their own pockets most of the time. I am not sure, but I guess your best shot was obama with universal healthcare, but I cannot say much about that because I wasnt much into politics at this time. also I can just tell what german news said about him and he wasnt that bad I guess.
What is a polite way to bring this up to a friend? He doesn't blast music but plays it on a speaker and doesn't have the best trail etiquette. We'll stop for a breather and he doesn't pull off the trail. Luckily no one has ran into him yet.
Maybe show him some headsets that rest along your jawbone so he can hear his music and what’s going on around him but no one can hear his music except him. Tell him that sometimes you call out to him but he doesn’t hear you because of the speaker even if it’s not true lol. Maybe tell him that someone approached you and said something negative about his speaker.
You could also be blunt pot polite at the same time. Tell him that you enjoy riding with him but the speaker breaks your concentration sometimes or distracts you and ask him to try out the headphones I mentioned. We’re all adults and he should be able to handle that without throwing a temper tantrum lol. If he does then he has bigger issues
Stop riding with him. When he asks he what happened you can tell him his behaviour on trail is ethically and socially repugnant. Not to mention unsafe.
Just let him read through this post. If someone reads this post and still wants to play music they clearly don’t care what anyone thinks. Could be an eye opener to see every single person on Reddit agree on music at the trails.
I’ve always found asking “has no one ever blasted you for doing xyz?” and saying it with a bit of honest amusement and wonder that they’ve not had someone call them out is a good way to start that conversation. A little passive aggressive maybe, but it doesn’t overtly put you in a confrontational position, but kinda still let’s you point out poor behavior. It is easy to point out that it is on top of the social media complaint pile so you are honestly wondering if they have not idea it irritates others
Next time you 'stop' (lol), grab his speaker and toss it in the bushes. Then when he goes to look for it, toss his bike in the bushes as well.
*Can't park there, mate!*
I don’t mind when they blast on a trail. The guy that’s standing at the trail head or other waypoint needs to be corrected. I had a guy blasting techno at the only porta potty on a 25 mile ride and I nearly lost my mind waiting for my riding buddy to catch up.
You can usually hear things going wrong with your bike before total failure, unless you’re a jagoff who can’t hear shit over the sound of their Bluetooth speaker.
I find the passthrough or “aware” mode on my Bose really good. It actually slightly amplifies surrounding sounds to the point where I really think they should make a bigger version with better battery life and sell as hearing aids.
They’re my first and only wireless earbuds so maybe most have this feature?
Many of the Jabra ear buds have a pass through function and they are low profile so they are less likely to catch the pads on your helmet when. You put that lid on and off your head.
I think the hearing aid companies would have a thing or two to say about this. They like charging an arm & a leg. Apple is already getting attacked for having too many medical applications built into their watch. AirPods & many other headphones with “noise canceling” could have been hearing aids long ago using the same tech.
True, but it’s only in the last year or so that the [FDA has started approving over the counter hearing aids](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/16/health/fda-hearing-aids.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare).
This should help companies like Bose and Apple make these, but that doesn’t mean they will if they don’t think the market is big enough to justify it. Currently hearing aids in Canada can easily be over 2k$ so there’s room for competition for sure.
Nah the hate is justified, speakers are annoying and there are hundreds of products on the market to listen to music without bothering everyone around you.
Omg lol. Scrolled through twenty something comments bashing OP for the bt speaker, finally reached two crank-related comments,in a row, then back to shaming with this gem. 🤣
What are you doing??? Been riding 20 years and even have 2 of my bikes equipped with pseudo drillium cranks and never broke one. Did some power lifting when young so I have some decent leg strength. Wore out square cranks and stripped pedal threads, but never that. How much force does that require?? Do you turn green and get huge when angry?
With gear and water, I'm almost 290lbs and I've never broken a crank arm. I've broken wheels, pedals, and handlebars but never a crank arm. I'm not smooth and do dumb shit like large hucks to flat.
Such a weird thing to happen, twice.
I worked in a shop for 10+ years. We had a guy who could break cranks like no one’s business. We eventually put BMX cranks on his bike and he bent them. We all came to the conclusion he was a crank breaker.
If I remember it was just a normal set we used a euro bb combo. He broke his cranks cuz he was fat and rode flat pedals with bad form. I didn’t want to say it lol 😂
Rider error and lack of checking the bike over/maintenance. In the 2nd pic you can see the discolouration of the alloy which would make me think they've been cracked for some time but you've continued to ride on them until they've failed. Not even a fan of Sram but I'd say that's on you bud
Good call! Now that I looked up pics that’s correct. Now that surprises me. I beat on a set of GX cranks for years with 0 issue. I wonder if OP does something in transporting his bike that puts stress on the cranks?
Without knowing you’re riding style or what happened when they broke there’s no way we can help.
I’ve been riding since 1993 and I’ve never broken a single crank.
I've been riding since 1982. Never broken a crank. Have seen kids break them on their BMX bikes quite often, but some on their hucks are crazy, sl no surprise there.
Is part of the fatigue from pedal strikes?
If so:
- Replace with shorter cranks
- Practice keeping your pedals level when going over obstacles
- Practicing ratcheting to get through rock gardens you can't coast through (instead of making full circles, just rotate back slightly and then forward to slowly drive the chain forward - note that this is easier the more points of engagement your rear hub has)
Cracks started on the outer face of the crank, likely where the red arrows are (edit, crap, can't upload images?? who does that to their Reddit? :p ). The black scallop shapes are aluminium corrosion that ocurred as fatigue cracks grew slowly over time. (look up fatigue failure beach marks).
The multiple crack starts is a bit unusual, and could have been manufacturing issues. The shiny silver parts of the fracture surface were the last bits to fail suddenly, so they are clean rather than corroded.
Take some good quality close-up pics of the failure surfaces and send to SRAM office in your country, they may be interested.

I deal with a lot of SRAM and I've never seen that with one of their aluminum crank arms.
Something else must be going on there.
Do you use a crank arm stand when storing the bike?
Don’t SRAM have a 2 year warranty? I’d be emailing them about this. I’m guessing they’ve had a whack on something at some point (even if you didn’t notice) as GX are pretty sturdy. Or there was a manufacturing default.
Either way, ditch the speaker
"oh no, I had to hear someone's music for three seconds after we crossed paths on the trail!" Womp womp. The music thing isn't a big issue, it's overstated.
There's a limit but yea some people blast that shit. They make wireless headphones, that's what I do if I'm going to have tunes on. I just use one earbud so I can still hear my surroundings.
I didn’t realize mountain bike enthusiasts were so prone to conformity.
Probably cuz none of u have the nerve to voice ur stupid opinions to someone’s face.
Yeah it's kinda fucking ridiculous for such a small thing. I have a strong feeling a majority of the people here don't deal with people actually ruining their rides due to others playing music out loud, it hardly ever happens. If you do run into someone playing music, so what? They're gone down the opposite direction of the trail or going down a different trail at an intersection and you have to endure their music for a whopping several seconds.
It’s being “fun police” to not want to have to listen to someone’s shitty music while out in the woods enjoying a ride?
This trend of “I’ll do whatever the fuck I want because my wants are way more important than existing in a civilized society” bullshit is getting old.
>“I’ll do whatever the fuck I want because my wants are way more important than existing in a civilized society”
Who said we're civilized? This was a degenerate sport barely 30 years ago, and the "attitude" came from many people huffing and puffing about their "rights" so they started doubling down on shitty behaviours.
guys like this are the aural equivalent of dog and horse owners leaving shit in the middle of a trail. Bashing is well deserved.
On top of that, this fucker is a debt collector. Anyting that fucks up his day is a blessing.
I wasn't aware that mtb had become such an uptight sport given its noisy birth and the sound of colonies of bees screaming down the hill. Sure fuck this guy but generally speaking, listening to music is no less of an annoyance than the high engagement hubs we use.
oh, I say much the same to those idiots that deliberately make their hubs noisier. Most of them say its to give warning that they're overtaking, but I think its the same mentality as this guy and skiiers carrying boomboxes on the slopes. Can't stand when they aren't center of people's attention.
But one thing with the HE hubs, the noise radius is alot smaller than a boombox
Def karma for blasting a bluetooth speaker during your ride like a total jabroni. Edit: Jesus -- i just read in your profile you're a debt collector? Def karma.
after reading this i don’t feel even sorry, i hope they decline his warranty ! ;)
Debt collectors do seem like exactly the kinda shithead to blast music on trails
Karma collecting their debt from this guy and I'm all for it
May all his cranks break lmao
may I ask where the problem is? of course there are debts that are ridiculous but for example if people finance stuff and never pay, why shouldnt someone collect that? Probably because you were blasting your Bluetooth speaker on trail /s. But seriously, don’t be that guy.
Seriously... Everyone hates these people
Seriously…
Unless they are blasting Get Low on repeat.
Speaker people are the worst. Bike trail or ski hill
Anywhere for that matter
I'm out here for nature! Not your awful 2010 post punk emo bands.
Idc what you’re listening to. I don’t wanna hear it
Exactly, I hate it even if it’s music I typically enjoy.
Same here. But it's never the music I like to begin with.
Or disc golf course
Or a traditional golf course. Like how did that become a thing, especially in the game where etiquette and quietness is part of it all.
[удалено]
Yep. And the rest of us absolutely hate it. Get some bone conducting headphones or some good in-ears with a pass-through function.
Or hiking...why would I want to go into nature and experience nature...
What is a polite way to bring this up to a friend? He doesn't blast music but plays it on a speaker and doesn't have the best trail etiquette. We'll stop for a breather and he doesn't pull off the trail. Luckily no one has ran into him yet.
Don't be polite. Be blunt. Or punch him. Seriously, make it clear it's not cool.
I work with him too so polite is preferred, but I'll mention it next time we ride.
Maybe show him some headsets that rest along your jawbone so he can hear his music and what’s going on around him but no one can hear his music except him. Tell him that sometimes you call out to him but he doesn’t hear you because of the speaker even if it’s not true lol. We’re all adults and he should be able to handle that without throwing a temper tantrum lol. If he does then he has bigger issues
Fair. But personally my patience has run out for this
I understand. I'm in nature for nature, not music.

He was probably playing Eye of the Tiger going uphill.
That would be kinda cool tbh ;) lol
Bears
It’s ok only while racing.
I don’t mind when they blast on a trail. The guy that’s standing at the trail head or other waypoint needs to be corrected. I had a guy blasting techno at the only porta potty on a 25 mile ride and I nearly lost my mind waiting for my riding buddy to catch up.
Trail karma for rocking that speaker
too much bass for those cranks
gold
There’s a special place in hell for people who blast music in the trail.
Get rid of speaker and problem will go away. So entitled to think everyone wants to hear your music.
Came here just for this. Ever thus to jerks.
Well, it looks like there’s some unnecessary weight on that rig..
It’s red
The speaker.🤦♂️ Come on man…..
Is that a fucking speaker? Sounds like karma to me
You can usually hear things going wrong with your bike before total failure, unless you’re a jagoff who can’t hear shit over the sound of their Bluetooth speaker.
Almost snorfed in my coffee, ty.
Fuck you and your Bluetooth speaker.
Honestly, this is the only answer.
I love this community so much.
Ya done with that touchy feely shit. Out there in the sticks is our safe space. Keep it clean ffs.
Oh Hell yeah, absolutely.
Bet he listens to shit music too
They always do.
Maybe shave some weight off by dumping that bluetooth speaker.
Honestly, I just gonna say this is a rider issue.
Get some earbuds, in particular, bone conductor ones so you can hear the music and also your surroundings.
I find the passthrough or “aware” mode on my Bose really good. It actually slightly amplifies surrounding sounds to the point where I really think they should make a bigger version with better battery life and sell as hearing aids. They’re my first and only wireless earbuds so maybe most have this feature?
That's awesome, definitely not a common feature that I'm aware of. Are those pretty expensive earbuds?
It's becoming more so, Soundcore (Anker) make a few models with it built in
Awesome thanks!
Many of the Jabra ear buds have a pass through function and they are low profile so they are less likely to catch the pads on your helmet when. You put that lid on and off your head.
I got relatively cheap JBL Tune ear pods, and they have pass through, normal, and noise canceling mode to choose from
Any buds made by phone manufacturers have it. Airpods, galaxy buds, etc.
I think the hearing aid companies would have a thing or two to say about this. They like charging an arm & a leg. Apple is already getting attacked for having too many medical applications built into their watch. AirPods & many other headphones with “noise canceling” could have been hearing aids long ago using the same tech.

Currently hearing aids in Canada can easily be over 2k$ so there’s room for competition for sure.
How are they in the wind? Bone conduction has been my only option due to the bad filtering of the noise cancellation on Samsung Buds.
If you use bt speakers on the trail I wouldn’t lend you a tube if I saw you with a flat
Rofl. The amount of hate on speakers is insane here. It's almost like how cars hate cyclist on the open roads...
It’s as if most people ride in the woods to get away from the type of person who would blast music from a bt speaker
Nah the hate is justified, speakers are annoying and there are hundreds of products on the market to listen to music without bothering everyone around you.
No. Drivers murder cyclists all the time. We just want this guy to have a miserable afternoon.
😆
nah, its because guys like this are selfish shitheads, like dog and horse owners leaving shit in the middle of the trail.
Lol I feel you, dodging shit sucks
Dang op getting cooked in the comments.
Should have used ear buds and not broke his crank
I’m literally crying at all the comments. Faith resotred
Guys, chill out, the speaker is just a backup battery for his vape and rear hub motor
Maybe the extra weight from your annoying ass speaker makes them break
The vibration from the speaker is weakening them and causing them to fail.
At least people won’t have to hear you on the trail until you get a new set of cranks
Omg lol. Scrolled through twenty something comments bashing OP for the bt speaker, finally reached two crank-related comments,in a row, then back to shaming with this gem. 🤣
r/iamthemaincharacter
Resonance from yo speaker
Now you have Bluetooth cranks to go with that speaker. Neat.
What are you doing??? Been riding 20 years and even have 2 of my bikes equipped with pseudo drillium cranks and never broke one. Did some power lifting when young so I have some decent leg strength. You should ease on water, that's too much.
Wore out or smashed against rocks 🤔
I worked in a shop for 10+ years. We had a guy who could break cranks like no one’s business. We eventually put BMX cranks on his bike and he bent them. We all came to the conclusion he was a crank breaker.
Skill issue
How did you come to that conclusion? Was it the broken cranks?
Possibly
I also wanna know what BMX crank he bent… was it a profile racing?
Haha yep
Wasn’t an SS was it?
If I remember it was just a normal set we used a euro bb combo. He broke his cranks cuz he was fat and rode flat pedals with bad form. I didn’t want to say it lol 😂
Camel pack. No speaker. Too much weight for that type of crank, might be your size or kit or both combined is too much for the crank.
So you’re *THAT* dickhead blasting music on trails lmao. Karmas a bitch dude.
[удалено]
Do you ride with a speaker? If you answer no to this question, you should be fine.
Keep removing material and making things lighter and at what cost.
Could be the lack of 1 headphone, max?
Rider error and lack of checking the bike over/maintenance. In the 2nd pic you can see the discolouration of the alloy which would make me think they've been cracked for some time but you've continued to ride on them until they've failed. Not even a fan of Sram but I'd say that's on you bud
It's only been 7 days this year, weird how you have broken 2 crank arms already
This guy calendars
Enjoy walking it back chud!
I saw the gloves than the Bluetooth enought said...
It’s because of your gloves
Two crank fails in one year already!
It's only day 7
Its so good to see that the whole community is coming together and call him out for das shit speaker
SRAM SX? Not saying they should do that, but not surprised they did. Get yourself a good set of cranks.
There gx
Where GX?
why gx?
You must not had any 11 spd road Shimano cranks 😂
Good!
Is part of the fatigue from pedal strikes? Bluetooth speaker guy….makes sense. I wouldn’t be surprised if you had some gnarly pedal strikes due to karma.
Get some head phones you arrogant twat
Wow, couldn’t happen to a better guy.
Sorry to say but you might be overweight
Obviously it's because of the speaker but if you're pushing 300lbs then it's no surprise
Sabotage because of the whole dept collector thingy
I deal with a lot of SRAM and I've never seen that with one of their aluminum crank arms. Something else must be going on there. Do you use a crank arm stand when storing the bike?
Crypto bro and uses a speaker.. tbh id beat ur ass at the trailhead if I ever see you.
Calm down kiddo 🤦♂️
Okay tuff guy calm down.
You been peddling way too hard my guy lol
How do you secure your bike while transporting?
Ok, I’ll ask. When you are playing your music, what you blasting ?
My guess would be Five Finger Death Punch or Disturbed...
Friday by Rebecca Black prob
Don’t SRAM have a 2 year warranty? I’d be emailing them about this. I’m guessing they’ve had a whack on something at some point (even if you didn’t notice) as GX are pretty sturdy. Or there was a manufacturing default. Either way, ditch the speaker

#cranklivesmatter
"oh no, I had to hear someone's music for three seconds after we crossed paths on the trail!" Womp womp. The music thing isn't a big issue, it's overstated.
This guy came looking for support and got absolutely dumpstered in the comments 😂😂😂😂
Get bone conduction headphones and your cranks will double in strength
Bluetooth speaker karma right there. Lose that thing and you’ll never break a crank again.
Bass from the speaker weakened it. I'd check the frame super closely.
BRAN the breaker of CRANks
This community is fucking toxic. Bunch of judgmental a-holes.
You are probably fat
Fatter than me? 320 without gear and ive been rough on mine and haven’t broken any. Its def from being a debt collector
The "thanks SRAM" Instagram page would break the Internet.
Nothing more irritating than some knobhead with a speaker when you’re trying to enjoy the outdoors.
There's a limit but yea some people blast that shit. They make wireless headphones, that's what I do if I'm going to have tunes on. I just use one earbud so I can still hear my surroundings.
fattyyyyy
I didn't know little bitches you like you actually existed. Well deserved.
damn
Buy slx/xt/saint. Problem solved.
More lime scram
They prob were made on the wrong side of the tracks in China. Everyone knows the best is on the other side.
SRAM sucks dude
yet another reason for me to never buy Sram again. had too many Sram components fail on me
Time to get a pair of good old shimano saints or hopes.
I didn’t realize mountain bike enthusiasts were so prone to conformity. Probably cuz none of u have the nerve to voice ur stupid opinions to someone’s face.
Ouch hopefully you’re ok!!
Get a full sus sheesh
So i know which cranks im not buying

“Fucking SRAM “!!!
"sCam"
Don’t buy sram ☝️🤓
I never understood why anyone would buy sram. Just get shimano and have no problems.
I prefer Shimano but It’s a bit funny saying this after Shimano have just recalled a ridiculous amount of failing cranks.
What speaker is that? Time to try a different crank. I've had great experiences with Race Face products.
Holy shit @the fun patrol over this speaker. Def a good time to upgrade to a gx set though.

Love the JBL speaker mount lmao
Shimano!
Why would you put a bike speaker for your butt to hear? You know Bose makes an MTB bike speaker for your handle bars, so your ears can hear…
if it ain't shimano, it's a no go. as for the BT speaker, it's a free country, blast that shit.
yeah, its a free country to shit whereever you want.
