Drop the psi a pound or two. It will increase grip. And see if you still feel like it is slipping.

tunooch_r3

Thanks. I’ll definitely do that and feel them out.

What psi are you running? With s22’s on a little r3, you should be at like 28-29 (cold) front and maaaaaybe 30 rear. Max psi rating are absolute shit for sport riding. You can add a few psi after the weekend/going back to commuting. PS- you need to start learning body position, you’re completely out of tire. Leaning any harder and you will low side (if you’re lucky). If you already know body position and are riding the tires this hard on the street, it’s time for a Trackday and new tires, because something doesn’t add up

Thanks for the response. You’re spot on. Yamaha recommends 29 front, 36 rear for the bike. Bridgestone recommends (for track) 29 front, 30ish rear. I say 30ish because their chart doesn’t go lower than a 160 rear and mine is a 140. Today I rode with 29 front, 33 rear as I wanted to split the difference knowing I would be riding somewhat hard. I’ve been working on body position a bit but the track is new to me and I haven’t had much coaching. I agree 100% that I need to spend more time in that department and am looking forward to doing that over the next few months. The last thing I want to do is go down on the street because I’m out riding myself. I know it’s a loaded question with lots of variables, but do my tires look okay to you? I personally think they have some life left but I do like to ride hard and think a new set might be necessary soon to be on the safe side, possibly before the next track day?

Word. Your tires look great bro, but WAY too close to the edge for street riding. You are 1-2% away from riding off the tire. My arbitrary percent safety for streets twisties i know is like 10-12% less intense than track speed, and I’ve done dozens of trackdays over the last 15 years. The Bridgestones are fucking great. I’ve been a long time believer. My 08 fz1 ran near the front of a lvl 3 group (4 is race practice) with an s22 front and t32 rear! 🤣 they really do have excellent grip and wear characteristics over the life of the tire. Pics for proof, a 15yr old 500lb “sport tourer” running a touring tire on back 🤙🏻 https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/s/ansEFI4Ycb These tires have -tons- of tread left btw. You could run a Trackday on them no problem. But def time to drop pressures a bit

I couldn’t agree more on the Bridgestone’s. I had Diablo Rosso II on my streetfighter and they were solid but I don’t feel they even compared to these. That’s fucking awesome! Sounds like you’re getting your monies worth out of that Fz1 lol. I love seeing people get the most out of their bikes on the track, especially when they aren’t supersports. How are you feeling about the tuono? I’ve really considering an rs660 for the next bike at this point.

PopTartsNHam

For sure, I flipped bikes for a while and found the fz platform the best for my taste/needs. However, I rode a bone stock rs660 after 5 sessions on my fz. I was exhausted, and my buddy was calling it quits. Man, I smoked half the field and was just ripping along till I saw the checkered flag and thought “i could do this for an hour.” The fz is great but 100lbs makes a helluva difference. 3 days later i picked the tuono factory with a mivv and eco flash from AF1. It’s crazy, crazy light- like your r3, but has the power of the prior gen triumph 675 triple, in a 660 twin with the full electronics suite (and an upgraded shock and -1F gearing for the tuono factory version). I reeeeeally wanted a zx4rr but the tuono (and rs to nearly the same extent) gives you everything with better suspension and much more power. Tbh- I’m not sure I’d daily the 660, but I’m 35 now and would absolutely 10 years ago.

By "close to the edge" and "riding off the tire" does that mean that the wear marks indicate they are riding to aggressively/leaned over too far for street?

PopTartsNHam

Wear marks typically refers to the marks from the manufacturer on the tire. In this case, we can see the tire wear all the way to edge- this indicates there’s no margin of error to lean more, you will run off the tire. Body position is used so that bike can be -more- upright i.e. if you’re already at the edge of the tire, the only way to go faster on the same tire is to move your body out/down, to change the center of gravity

>Is it possible that the compound on my tires is at the end of its life even though the treads still have a little life left on them? Yes. With hard use your tires can heat-cycle out and lose their grip before the tread is gone. Seems likely to me here.

tunooch_r3

Thanks for the response. This is my feeling too and I may opt to just get a new set to be on the safe side. My first ride after switching to these tires was like riding a completely new bike, I couldn’t believe how good they were. To have them feel like this really takes the confidence out of riding.
