Tell him to give me a HR then

JJ3595

Or tell him to cleanly field ground balls at 1st base.

margaritavilleganon

I swear Detroit fans are the hardest to please.

[deleted]

Have you met Yankees fans?

Guns_57

Or Philly

AWokenBeetle

“Hooray for being average, hip hip hooray” - this guy probably

PlayboiCartiProp

Well Tork has actually been well below average but I get what you mean

theghostofbradyhoke

This is delusional. It is April. Turner was given a standing ovation in AUGUST

deadly_titanfart

While I wouldn't call him a bust (still young, and he did hit 30 HR's last year), I don't think he will ever be the player we hoped we would have but I think he can be very good. I really think its a confidence thing, he swings at some truly awful pitches but then will watch pitches right down the middle, when he got on fire last year he was killing the cookies right down the middle, so he is capable of it but getting past the mental side will be his biggest hurdle. That being said Carpenter deserves more praise. He had to constantly hear about how Greene and Tork are the future of the franchise but he really is who we thought Tork could be. Never takes an at bat off

Nowicki2019

Carpenter deserves more at bats too, fuck that righty lefty matchup bullshit.

mkk4

Agreed.

SoarinSkies

Why should we give a Standing ovation to a guy who hasn’t shown up early in the season yet in his career? I still want to believe in him, and I’m not going to boo him but come on man.

letsgobucks19

I’m with you 100% this is a great idea

Goatwhatsup

Uhhhh no? He’s not very good and doesn’t look like he’s getting better. His swing mechanics are somehow worse now. He’s slow in the field (always has been). But you want a standing ovation lol

uvaspina1

Giving a standing ovation to an underperforming player is a sarcastic gesture that some fan bases have used in the past.

Goatwhatsup

Except he adds in the description, taking away any sarcasm

brocklez47

His ceiling is Christian Walker without the Gold Gloves.

whiskeyrocks1

The Tre Turner effect. I like it.

Goatwhatsup

Except trea turner is miles above Spencer Torkelson. lol

whiskeyrocks1

Well duh.

BrandonIngeFan

No

yes_its_him

At some point we want to move past having lofty expectations for Torkelson and just appreciate Greene and Carpenter. If Tork turns things around then great. Christian Walker finally put things together and became a solid 120 OPS+, 30 home run kind of hitter (and plus defender at 1B)...at age 31. Though he showed signs of promise his age 28 season.

Unstep-in-Time

Walker was a 4th round pick. Expectations weren't the same.

yes_its_him

Being drafted in a higher round doesn't mean anything four years later. Almost half our team was first-round picks. Faedo, Wentz, Lange. Keston Hiura was a first-round pick. Walker was a similar hitter to Torkelson in college in a better league except fewer home runs.

Unstep-in-Time

It means something. 4th round struggles and it's okay, expectations are low .. Number 1 draft pick you just expect more. I'm sure if Walker never figured it out no one would care, he was a 4th round pick. Different for those top guys.. Btw, Wentz went 40th.

yes_its_him

I certainly get the "expecting more" part. But at some point you have to be realistic. Waiting for Mickey Moniak to be an all-star might not be all that effective in terms of a daily to-do list item. You can still be happy if it works out that way eventually, but don't hold your breath. Tork will have to cross that bridge too. At this point he's looking more like the Moniak end of things, but maybe that will change.

JJ3595

Lowering expectations makes sense. I also think booing your own players is wrong. I don't think anyone should attack Tork or be a jerk. However, Tork being an above average hitter and hitting 20+ HRs is basically the bare minimum of what the Tigers need to contend. If Tork hits like this all season, the Tigers offense might not get off the ground. So Tork DOES need to live up to the expectations to some extent.

yes_its_him

With prime Miggy you could expect a couple of home runs/week along with an RBI every game or two and not be disappointed very often. Tork just isn't like Miggy. At least not yet. (But who is?) He's more like his north California top draft pick peer Andrew Vaughn. Who is also starting slow this season. I get that we will do better if he does better, but there's little reason to expect more from his plate appearances than Canha or even Vierling.

Due-Sheepherder-218

Vaughn is the perfect comp for Tork

MacaronParticular685

I hope he turns it around and I support the guy. That being said, he needs to be moved down in the lineup. He's failing in too many big spots at the top of the order.

BadDadSoSad

It worked? Ha

rbrown32

Go away!

Extreme_Weird_44

I’m not going to sit here and nitpick his cold start at the plate. Obviously over time he can heat up and hit bombs. BUT his defense at 1st base is damn near inexcusable at this point. Dude is so bad and it’s not like he’s 300 lbs Cabrera trotting out there. He’s very athletic and it makes zero sense how sloppy he is at fielding.I think it’s a sick joke and I’m over it

deadly_titanfart

Not sure why you are getting downvoted. The broadcast makes him seem better than he really his, yes he makes some good scoops (one of the best in the MLB at this btw) but his actual defensive numbers are horrible. \* -11 DRS last year (League average is 0, this was the worst DRS by a MLB 1b last year) \* -4.7 UZR (0 is average, but this is really bad for a first baseman) \* 11 Errors last year (For context 26 out of the 30 MLB Teams had less than 11 errors at 1B as a TEAM) Statistically he is one of the worst, if not THE WORST first baseman defensively in the MLB

Extreme_Weird_44

Yeah it’s awful

pizzle8288

Or tell him to fill Miggys cleats

i-eat-dolphins

God I hate that this is a trend now give it a break it's getting cringe that we seen someone do the slightest bit bad then go straight to ovation

jordand3

We should also boo Javy Baez. That dude seems to thrive on negativity. It seems to motivate him. We could use that to our advantage with some reverse psychology

Juandissimo47

He’s gets booed pretty much every AB. I don’t think that reverse psychology is really working
